Last Friday a demonstration, led by the leader of the opposition Desi Bouterse, was staged downtown. There were about 4500 people in attendance and they were protesting the high prices in Suriname - mostly a spin off of the high oil and gas prices. The weather is hot and humid but no body ever knows the temperature. It is like Kay said about India - why talk about it because it is always hot. I did however see a temperature sign on Sunday that said 37 degrees and I think that it has been slightly less than that since. New York City - Nieuw Amsterdam
New York City - Nieuw Amsterdam
The settlement, outside of Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island in the New Netherland territory (1614--1664), was situated between 38 and 42 degrees latitude and was as a provincial extension of the Dutch Republic as of 1624. Situated on the strategic, fortifiable southern tip of the island of Manhattan, the fort was meant to defend the Dutch East India Company's fur trade operations in the North River (Hudson River). Fort Amsterdam was designated the capital of the province in 1625. To legally safeguard the settlers' investments, possessions and farms on Manhattan island, the Dutch negotiated the "purchase" of Manhattan from the Manahatta band of Lenape for 60 guilders worth of trade goods. After the signing of the Treaty of Westminster in November 1674, the city was relinquished to the English and the name reverted to "New York". Suriname became an official Dutch possession in return.

Bandaneira episode #2: A Story Behind History
Bandaneira episode #2: A Story Behind History
Article taken from en.wikipedia.org In 1667 the Treaty of Breda ended the conflict. The Dutch did not press their claims on New Netherland. In return, they were granted the tiny Island of Run in North Maluku, rich in nutmegs and the guarantee for the factual possession of Suriname, that year captured by them. New Amsterdam (Dutch: Nieuw-Amsterdam) was a 17th-century Dutch colonial settlement that served as the capital of New Netherland. It later became New York City. The 1625 date of the founding of New Amsterdam is now commemorated in the official Seal of New York City (formerly, the year on the seal was 1664, the year of the provisional Articles of Transfer, ensuring New Netherlanders that they "shall keep and enjoy the liberty of their consciences in religion", negotiated with the English by Petrus Stuyvesant and his council). On August 27, 1664, while England and the Dutch Republic were at peace, four English frigates sailed into New Amsterdam's harbor and demanded New Netherland's ...

Defence line of Amsterdam - Fort Spijkerboor - World Heritage
Defence line of Amsterdam - Fort Spijkerboor - World Heritage
Fort Spijkerboor, part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, is located in another World Heratage site named Beemster Polder. The "Stelling" or 'Defence Line' of Amsterdam is a system of military defences, constructed between 1880 and 1920. It is a ring of forts, dams, sluices, dikes and banking around the city of Amsterdam. The Stelling was actually never used. Fairly soon after its completion, the first bomber aircraft took to the sky and the character of war changed completely. The Stelling lost its purpose. What remained were beautiful imprints in the landscape where increasingly nature did its own thing. Fort Spijkerboor borders the Dutch polder de Beemster, another name on the world heritage list. Spijkerboor is the only fort where you can see a turret. The fort is now in hands of nature protection interests, groups that have here raised the marriage of history and nature to an art form. Open to visitors, complete with a tour to bring the local history of olden days back to life. From the turret, a total of five shells were said to have been fired in all its history, and these just for test purposes. The most modern techniques of the time were applied. A salient detail - it was all German technology. Each fort consisted of a system of connected halls, crew and officer accommodation, sick bays, storage depots, washing areas and kitchens. In fact it was a mini-society which was pretty much self-supporting. During the second world war Spijkerboor actually served as a POW ...

This clip features the star fort as well as a little historical perspective on it. And NO the height of the railing isn't too small. Apperantly, it was really that low. And yeah, I know that should be a Union Jack up there, but I chose the Dutch flag because it was easier to do in 3D.
