Don Heck (January 2, 1929 – February 23, 1995) was an American comic book artist best known for co-creating the Marvel Comics character Iron Man, and for his long run penciling the Marvel superhero-team series ''The Avengers'' during the 1960s Silver Age of comic books.

Early life and career[link]

Born in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York City, New York, Don Heck learned art through correspondence courses as well as at Woodrow Wilson Vocational High School in Jamaica and at Brooklyn Community College. He continued with an impromptu education in 1949 when a college friend recommended him for a job at Harvey Comics, repurposing newspaper comic strip Photostats into comic-book form — including the work of Heck's idol, famed cartoonist Milton Caniff, whose art Heck's would later resemble. One co-worker in the Harvey production department was future comics-art notable Pete Morisi.

Heck left Harvey after a year, and after taking his art samples to comic book companies chosen at random, he landed freelance assignments for Quality Comics, Hillman Comics, and Toby Press. Heck's first known credited work is on the horror comics ''Weird Terror'', ''Horrific'', ''Terrific'', and ''Danger'', and the violent Western series ''Death Valley'', for publisher Comic Media beginning in 1952. Publisher Allen Hardy was a former co-worker at Harvey Comics. For publisher U.S. Pictorial, circa 1955, he drew the one-shot ''Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion'', a TV tie-in comic, possibly a Heinz giveaway, based on the 1955-57 syndicated, live-action kids' show of that name.

Atlas Comics[link]

Through his colleague Pete Morisi, Heck met Stan Lee, editor-in-chief and art director of Timely Comics, and subsequently Atlas Comics, the two forerunners of Marvel Comics. Heck became an Atlas staff artist on September 1, 1954; his first known work for the company was the six-page Korean War story "The Commies Attack!" in ''Battlefront'' #29 (March 1955). He also drew Westerns, crime fiction, horror, and jungle stories. During a 1957 business retrenchment, when Atlas let go of most of its staff and freelancers, Heck worked for 18 months designing model airplanes. Atlas began revamping in late 1958 with the arrival of artist Jack Kirby, a comics legend whose career was also in need of revamping, and who threw himself into the anthological science fiction, supernatural mystery, and giant-monster stories of what would become known as "pre-superhero Marvel." Heck returned alongside other soon-to-be-famous names of Marvel Comics' 1960s emergence as a pop culture phenomenon, making his first splash with the cover of ''Tales of Suspense #1'' (Jan. 1959). one of the very few of that time not drawn by Kirby.

In the years immediately preceding the arrival of the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and the other popular heroes of Marvel's ascendancy, Heck gave atmospheric rendering to numerous science fictopm jungle/prison-escape stories and other genres, ''Strange Tales'' and ''Tales to Astonish'', to name two of the many pre-superhero comics for which he drew; others included ''Strange Worlds'', ''World of Fantasy'', and ''Journey into Mystery''. Many of these stories were reprinted during the 1960s and 1970s. Heck, who was known for drawing beautiful women, also contributed to such Atlas/Marvel romance comics as ''Love Romances'' and ''My Own Romance''.

Comics artist Jerry Ordway, describing this era of Heck's work, called the artist "truly under-appreciated ... His Atlas work (pre-Marvel) was terrific, with a clean sharp style, and an ink line that wouldn't quit."

Silver Age[link]

Iron Man premiered in ''Tales of Suspense'' #39 (March 1963) as a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Heck, and Kirby, who provided the cover pencils and designed the first Iron Man armor. Kirby "designed the costume," Heck recalled, "because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts." Comics historian and former Kirby assistant Mark Evanier, investigating claims of Kirby's involvement in the creation of both Iron Man and Daredevil, interviewed Kirby and Heck on the subject, years before their deaths, and concluded that Kirby }} Heck presided over the first appearance of Hawkeye, Marvel's archer supreme, in ''Tales of Suspense'' #57 (Sept. 1964), and ''femme fatale'' Communist spy and future superheroine and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent the Black Widow in #52 (April 1964).

Heck drew the feature through issue #46 (Oct. 1963), after which Spider-Man artist Steve Ditko introduced the familiar red-and-gold Iron Man armor and drew the feature for three issues. Heck returned with #50 — which introduced Iron Man's arch-foe, the Mandarin — and continued through #72 (Dec. 1965).

Concurrent with drawing Iron Man, Heck succeeded Jack Kirby as penciler on ''The Avengers'' with issue #9 (Oct. 1964), the introduction of Wonder Man.

Later career[link]

Heck inked his own pencils for many years. However, when struggling to adjust to the "Marvel method" of doing comics — in which the penciler plotted and paced the details of a story based on a synopsis or plot outline from the writer, who would afterward add dialog — and Marvel's explosion of superhero titles, he was assigned the help of an inker for the first time. He successfully made this adjustment, and went on to be one of the most remembered artists of Marvel's ''The Avengers'' in the mid-1960s. Eventually, he returned to inking his own work in ''The Avengers'' #32-37.

At DC Comics, Heck drew ''Wonder Woman'' #204 (Jan.–Feb. 1973) in which the character's powers and traditional costume were restored after several years. With writer Gerry Conway, Heck co-created, Steel, the Indestructible Man in the premiere issue (March 1978) of the titular comic. After the cancellation of ''Steel'', Heck drew ''The Flash''. In 1982, Heck would reunite with Conway on the ''Justice League of America'' including that year's crossover with the ''All-Star Squadron''. After leaving the ''JLA'', Heck returned to ''Wonder Woman'' and drew the title until its cancellation in 1986.

He also penciled three issues of ''H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu'' for Millennium Publications.

Jacob Taio Cruz (born 23 April 1983) known professionally as Taio Cruz () is a British singer-songwriter, record producer, occasional rapper, and entrepreneur. In 2008, he released his debut album ''Departure'', which Cruz wrote, arranged and produced himself. It achieved initial success in the United Kingdom and earned him a MOBO Award nomination. In June 2010, Cruz released his follow-up album ''Rokstarr'', which includes the number one singles "Break Your Heart" and "Dynamite". Early life and career beginnings[link]

Cruz was born in London, to a Nigerian father and a Brazilian mother from Rio de Janeiro. He attended Bilton Grange, a private prep school in Rugby, Warwickshire.

Cruz began writing songs when he was 12. His songwriting career began at age 19 as part of Tricky Stewart's writing collective, RedZone Entertainment. Cruz achieved notability in 2005 when he was awarded a BRIT Award for co-writing Will Young's 2004 single, "Your Game". Cruz is the founder and chief executive of Rokstarr Music London, which in 2006 released his debut single "I Just Wanna Know". The single attracted significant attention from radio, and also from music industry insiders, who were already well aware of the artist's potential; manager Jamie Binns, who began representing Cruz at this time, later told HitQuarters: "He was a guy that everyone had earmarked to do damage in the future." Although the single received a reasonable amount of radio airplay, it did not perform as well as expected in either territory. However, rather than lose faith in Cruz, the labels were eager to negotiate an album deal, as by this time they had listened to his other songs and were ever more convinced by his capability.

Cruz's admirers included Island Records's Darcus Beese and Universal Republic's Monte Lipman, who, according to Binns, "both believed 'I Just Wanna Know' fitted the format on both sides of the Atlantic." In 2006, Cruz signed a split single deal with Universal Music Group companies, Republic Records and the UK branch of Island Records.

2006–2008: ''Departure''[link]

Taio Cruz released his second single "Moving On" in September 2007 which made the top 30 in the UK. In March 2008 his next single, "Come On Girl," featuring Luciana, peaked at No. 5 on the UK charts. The related album ''Departure'' appeared on 17 March and peaked at No. 17. This was followed by the single "I Can Be," which reached No. 18 in May. On 18 August, "She's Like a Star" was released, which was a remix of the previous single and featured American rapper Busta Rhymes and girl-group Sugababes. The remix later appeared on the Sugababes studio album ''Catfights & Spotlights'', which peaked at No. 20. It was later revealed that Cruz narrowly missed out on the chance to record the song "Umbrella" which was eventually recorded by Rihanna and ended up topping charts around the world.

2009–2011: ''Rokstarr'', international breakthrough and ''The Rokstarr Collection''[link]

Cruz was featured on Tinchy Stryder's breakout single "Take Me Back" which peaked at No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart. According to Cruz's official Myspace blog, as of 1 January 2009, Rokstarr Music London officially changed its name to Rokstarr Entertainment Division and abbreviated to R.E.D Inc. During 2009, he worked on his follow-up album entitled ''Rokstarr''. It was released on 12 October through R.E.D Inc/Island Records and is entirely written and produced by Cruz, with co-writes and co-productions predominantly with UK producer Fraser T. Smith. The album's lead single "Break Your Heart" was released on 14 September and reached number one in the UK, where it stayed for three weeks. The success of the song attracted the attention of David Massey and Daniel Werner from Mercury/Island Def Jam who were excited and aggressive about releasing "Break Your Heart" in the US on their label. According to Cruz's manager Jamie Binns, the relationship with Monte Lipman at Universal Republic had "gone a bit quiet" by this point and as Taio wanted to be with the label that was most enthusiastic about his music, a move from Universal Republic to Mercury/Island Def Jam was engineered.

The single reached the top spot in the U.S. for one week on the ''Billboard'' charts. In an interview with ''The Guardian'', it was stated that "Cruz was clever to have hooked up with a US rapper Ludacris on his breakthrough hit". In order to introduce Cruz into the US market, David Massey had suggested that the single feature an American rapper with chart credibility. The album spawned two other UK singles, "No Other One", and the top-ten hit "Dirty Picture" featuring American electropop singer Kesha. The album's fourth single (second in the US) titled "Dynamite" debuted at 26 and despite peaking at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, "Dynamite" peaked at number 1 on U.S. top 40 earning Cruz his second US number 1 record.

''Rokstarr'' was followed by the compilation album ''The Rokstarr Collection'' which includes songs both from ''Departure'' and the international version of ''Rokstarr''. Cruz later released four versions of his single "Higher" - one featuring Kylie Minogue, one featuring Travie McCoy, one featuring both, and one with just himself. Cruz has also been featured on the soundtrack of American reality TV series ''Jersey Shore''.

Writing and production[link]

Cruz has written songs on albums by Cheryl Cole, JLS, The Saturdays, The Wanted and David Guetta. Cruz wrote and featured on Tinchy Stryder's hit single "Take Me Back". Pop rock band McFly recorded "Shine a Light" which not only features, but was also penned and produced by Cruz for their fifth studio album. 2011 will see him writing for Justin Bieber's next album. Jennifer Lopez's 2011 single "I'm Into You", featuring Lil Wayne, is also penned by Cruz. He also contributed significantly to David Guetta's fifth album ''Nothing but the Beat'', penning two of his hit singles "Without You", featuring Usher and "Little Bad Girl", featuring Cruz himself and Ludacris.

Rokstarr brand[link]

On 1 September 2009, Cruz launched the brand Rokstarr; the fashion and accessories brand has a focus on sunglasses. Musicians & Artists such as Kanye West, Shontelle, Keri Hilson, Steves Peeps and Kelly Rowland have been seen wearing them. Speaking in October to R&B; writer Pete Lewis, Cruz stated: "There's a load of US celebrities that are all rocking the sunglasses already – Kid Cudi, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West... Then in the UK we have The Saturdays, JLS, Daniel Merriweather – who've all been twittering and writing on their blogs how much they love them. So yeah, it's definitely my new album 'Rokstarr' and the fashion brand that are my two main focuses at the moment."

Meanwhile, speaking again to Lewis in April 2010, Cruz revealed: "We're currently looking to expand the brand and possibly go into things like watches. I've also got a new subsidiary of Rokstarr called 'Rok By Rokstarr'. And we've just started doing things like jeans and T-shirts, and stuff that more of the fans of Taio Cruz can buy. Because with Rokstarr in itself being so expensive, a lot of the kids out there who want to buy Rokstarr things can't. So we're bringing in stuff that's a little bit more High Street and more affordable."

Mandel Bruce "Mandy" Patinkin (; born November 30, 1952) is an award-winning American actor of stage and screen and a tenor vocalist. He is a noted interpreter of the musical works of Stephen Sondheim, and is best known for his work in musical theatre, originating iconic roles such as Georges Seurat in ''Sunday in the Park with George'', Archibald Craven in ''The Secret Garden'', Burrs in ''The Wild Party'' and Che in the original Broadway production of ''Evita''.

He has appeared in television series such as ''Chicago Hope'', ''Dead Like Me'' and the first two seasons of ''Criminal Minds''. He currently plays Saul Berenson in the Showtime series ''Homeland''. His best-known film role was as Inigo Montoya in ''The Princess Bride'' in 1987. Other film roles include ''Alien Nation'' (1988), ''Yentl'' (1983), ''Dick Tracy'', and ''The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland'' (1999).

Early years[link]

Patinkin was born in Chicago, Illinois, of Russian and Polish Jewish descent, the son of Doris "Doralee" Sinton, a homemaker, and Lester Patinkin, who worked for the People's Iron & Metal Company and the Scrap Corporation of America. Patinkin grew up in a middle class Jewish family and was raised in Conservative Judaism, attending religious school daily "from the age of seven to 13 or 14" and singing in synagogue choirs, as well as attending the Camp Surah in Michigan.

He attended South Shore High School, Kenwood Academy (1970 graduate), the University of Kansas, and Juilliard School. At Juilliard, he was a classmate of Kelsey Grammer. When the producers of the popular American sitcom ''Cheers'' were auditioning for the role of Dr. Frasier Crane, Patinkin put Grammer's name forward.

Career[link]

After some TV commercial and radio appearances, including the CBS Radio Mystery Theater in 1974, Patinkin had his first success in musical theater, where he played the part of Che in ''Evita'' on Broadway in 1979. Patinkin went on to win that year's Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical. He then moved to film, playing parts in movies such as ''Yentl'' and ''Ragtime''. He returned to Broadway in 1984 to star in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical ''Sunday in the Park with George'', which saw him earn another Tony Award nomination for Best Actor (Musical).

Patinkin played Inigo Montoya in Rob Reiner's 1987 ''The Princess Bride'' (which Patinkin considers his favorite role), in which he delivers the iconic line, "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." Patinkin found his studies a huge asset in ''The Princess Bride'', playing the role of the best swordsman in the country, short of the main character, and part of his role included proficiency in fencing at a professional level. Over the next decade he continued to appear in movies, such as ''Dick Tracy'' and ''Alien Nation''.

On Broadway, over the next decade, he appeared in the musical ''The Secret Garden''. He also released two solo albums, titled ''Mandy Patinkin'' (1989) and ''Dress Casual'' (1990).

In 1994, he took the role of Dr. Jeffrey Geiger on CBS' ''Chicago Hope'' for which he won an Emmy Award. However, despite the award and the ratings success of the show, Patinkin left the show during the second season, as he was unhappy spending so much time away from his wife. He returned to the show in 1999 at the beginning of the sixth season, but it was later cancelled in 2000. Since ''Chicago Hope'', Patinkin has appeared in a number of films. However, he has mostly performed as a singer, releasing three more albums. In 1995 he guest starred in ''The Simpsons'' in the episode "Lisa's Wedding" as Hugh Parkfield, Lisa's future English groom.

In 1998, he debuted his most personal project, ''Mamaloshen'', a collection of traditional, classic, and contemporary songs sung entirely in Yiddish ("Mamaloshen" is Yiddish for "mother tongue"). The stage production of ''Mamaloshen'' was performed on and off–Broadway, and has toured throughout the country. The recording of ''Mamaloshen'' won the ''Deutschen Schallplattenpreis'' (Germany’s equivalent of the Grammy Award).

In 1999 he co-starred in ''The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland'' as the villainous Huxley, who tries to steal Elmo's blanket. He returned to Broadway in 2000 in the New York Shakespeare Festival's ''The Wild Party'', earning another Tony Award nomination for Best Actor (Musical). Recently, he has also been seen in the Showtime comedy-drama ''Dead Like Me'' as Rube Sofer. In 2004, he played a six–week engagement of his one–man concert at the Off Broadway complex Dodger Stages.

In September 2005, he debuted in the role of Jason Gideon, an experienced profiler just coming back to work after a series of nervous breakdowns, in the CBS crime drama ''Criminal Minds.''

Patinkin was absent from a table read for ''Criminal Minds'' and did not return for a third season. The departure from the show was not due to contractual or salary matters, but over creative differences. He left letters for his fellow cast member apologising explaining his reasons and wishing them luck. Many weeks before his departure, in a videotaped interview carried in the online magazine ''Monaco Revue'', Patinkin told journalists at the Festival de Télévision de Monte-Carlo that he loathed violence on television and was uncomfortable with certain scenes in ''Criminal Minds''.

He spoke of having planned to tour the world with a musical and wanting to inject more comedy into the entertainment business. The dark and violent nature of the show got to be too much for Patinkin, and in later episodes during the 2007-08 season, Jason Gideon was written out of the series, and replaced by Special Agent David Rossi (played by Joe Mantegna).

On October 14, 2009, it was announced that Patinkin would be a guest-star on an episode of ''Three Rivers'', which aired on November 15, 2009. He played a patient with Lou Gehrig's Disease injured in a car accident who asks the doctors at Three Rivers hospital to pull him off life support so his organs can be donated. He filmed an appearance on ''The Whole Truth'' that had been scheduled to air December 15, 2010, but ABC pulled the series from its schedule two weeks prior.

He starred in the new musical ''Paradise Found'', co-directed by Harold Prince and Susan Stroman, at the Menier Chocolate Factory, London. The musical played a limited engagement from May 2010 through June 26, 2010.

Patinkin and Patti Lupone performed their concert ''An Evening with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin'' on Broadway for a limited 63-performance run starting November 21, 2011, at the Barrymore Theatre, and which ended on January 13, 2012. This concert marks the first time the pair has performed together on Broadway since they appeared together in ''Evita''.

Personal life[link]

Patinkin married actress and writer Kathryn Grody in 1980. They have two sons, Isaac and Gideon. Gideon joined his father onstage in ''Dress Casual'' in 2011.

Patinkin suffered from keratoconus, a degenerative eye disease, in the mid-1990s. This led to two corneal transplants, his right cornea in 1997 and his left in 1998. He also was diagnosed with and treated for prostate cancer in 2004. He celebrated his first year of recovery in 2005 by doing a 280-mile charity bike ride with his son Isaac — the Arava Institute Hazon Israel Ride: Cycling for Peace, Partnership & Environmental Protection.

Patinkin has been involved in a variety of Jewish causes and cultural activities. He sings in Yiddish, often in concert, and on his album ''Mamaloshen''. He also wrote introductions for two books on Jewish culture, ''The Jewish American Family Album'', by Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler, and ''Grandma Doralee Patinkin's Holiday Cookbook: A Jewish Family's Celebrations,'' by his mother, Doralee Patinkin Rubin.

Patinkin contributed to the children's book ''Dewey Doo-it Helps Owlie Fly Again: A Musical Storybook'' inspired by Christopher Reeve prior to Christopher and Dana Reeve's deaths. The award winning book, published in 2005, benefits the Christopher Reeve Foundation and includes an audio CD with Patinkin singing and reading the story as well as Dana Reeve and Bernadette Peters singing.

Don Blackman (born September 1, 1953) is an American jazz-funk pianist, singer, songwriter, producer born in Queens, New York.

Blackman's neighbor as a child was Charles McPherson, and while still a teenager he played in McPherson's ensemble with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. At the beginning of the 1970s, he played with Parliament/Funkadelic, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Roy Ayers, before becoming a member of Lenny White's group Twennynine, for whom he penned songs such as "Peanut Butter" and "Morning Sunrise". He released his self-titled debut solo album in 1982 on Arista Records, including the songs "Holding You, Loving You", "Heart's Desire" and "Since You've Been Away So Long" that became minor hits in Europe.

Blackman has also worked as a session musician, appearing on albums by Kurtis Blow (''Kingdom Blow''), Bernard Wright, Najee, David Sanborn, Lenny White Roy Ayers, Sting (''Brand New Day''), World Saxophone Quartet, Janet Jackson's "That's the Way Love Goes" (Remix) and Wayman Tisdale. He wrote the composition "Live to Kick It", which appeared on Tupac Shakur's album ''R U Still Down? (Remember Me)'', "Dear Summer" which appeared on Memphis Bleek's album "534" featuring artist Jay-Z, and "Holding You, Loving You" which appeared on Master P.'s album "I Got The Hook Up".

On television, Blackman has scored and written music for commercials, TV shows, and movies, appearing on Fox Network's New York Undercover, producing and writing the theme song for Nickelodeon's show "Gullah Gullah Island" as well as producing songs for the MTV Network movie "Joe's Apartment"
