Bombora by The Atlantics, surf rock history part two
The Atlantics are an Australian surf rock band formed in the early 1960s and arguably Australia's most successful of the genre. Most well-known for their classic hit, "Bombora", their later recordings such as "Come On" are examples of 1960s garage rock. They were the first Australian rock band to write their own hits. In 2000 the group reformed with three of the original members, and they are still actively releasing new material and performing live. The surf rock era was rather short lived and with the arrival of the Beatles in the US it was followed by what was termed garage punk rock, influenced more by the Rolling Stones, with Seattle's Wailers and Sonics being probably the most important bands in that line, and some diversity added by the 13th Floor Elevators, Love and The Monks who brought in new elements such as a psychedelic touch, but that was a few years later. By the early 1960s instrumental rock and roll had been pioneered successfully by performers such as Duane Eddy, Link Wray, and The Ventures. This trend was developed by Dick Dale who added the distinctive reverb, the rapid alternate picking characteristic of the genre, as well as Middle Eastern and Mexican influences, producing the regional hit "Let's Go Trippin'" in 1961 and launching the surf music craze, following up with songs like "Misirlou" (1962). Like Dale and his Del-Tones, most early surf bands were formed in Southern California area, with Orange County in particular having a strong surf culture ...

New 2010 Optigan Disc - SURF ROCK!
Now available for pre-order at www.optigan.com is our brand new Optigan disc: SURF ROCK! When we've reached 15 pre-orders, we'll go to press with the limited run of 25 discs. Surf's up! It's time to wax the board and catch a wave! Optigan.com is proud to present Surf Rock , featuring the vintage sounds of the 1960's surf scene. For this music program disc, we've gone into the recording studio with a couple of SoCal's best surf rockers. Reverb enthusiast Matt Quilter is one-half of the guitar assault from the award-winning Reventlos www.reventlos.com whose quirky instro albums alternately intrigue and horrify surf music purists. In addition to his duties on guitar, he co-produced the documentary feature Pounding Surf! www.surfdrums.com an insider's look at the SoCal surf music scene from 1961 to the present day. For the Optigan session, he chose from his arsenal a Fender Stratocaster played through a blond Fender Tremolux and Reverb unit, both from 1963. Lee "Kix" rarely strays from playing Death-Surf / Afro-Billy music with the Reventlos. However in days past he has recorded with world famous instrumental guitar gods, The Ventures. As a veteran of many Linn Drum sessions, Kix is no stranger to having his drums sampled for posterity. The Optigan session was recorded with vintage 1960's Oaklawn Camco drums, 20x14 bass drum and 14x5.5 metal snare. T he 12x8 and 14x10 toms used in the session were obtained when Kix was a Los Angeles Camco endorsee in the mid-70's. Guitar and ...

Royalty Free Music collection: Pulp & Surf Rock Vol. 1
This video demonstrates the stock music collection "Pulp & Surf Rock, Vol. 1" from the stock music / production music site www.Shockwave-Sound.com. This collection contains 10 tracks, all available in various lengths, edits, cuts and loops, to give you great options in editing. Please note thatbecause of the 10-minute limit on YouTube videos, the video contains only the 60-secs version of each track. To hear the full length version of each track, as well as the other lengths, edits and loops, please visit www.shockwave-sound.com The music on these collections are slightly Retro sounding, using elements of rock, latin, and other styles to create a certain Retro chic. Often inspired by 1960's or 1970's rock, this music is recently made a strong revival, thanks in no small part to Quentin Tarantino, whose films have often featured music of this kind. You'll hear a lot of twangy guitars, often with lightning fast picking or a lot of tremolo, sometimes with a certain amount of hellish 'doom', and sometimes also with a Latin/Mexican twang. Carlos Santana is also an influence here. The term "Surf Rock" goes back to the music of the Beach Boys and Southern Californian rock music favored by the surfers at the time. The price of the music collection includes a license to use the music commercially and in public, as per our Royalty-Free License. All orders can be downloaded instantly from our server and/or shipped out to you on CD. It is also possible to license individual tracks ...

Dick Dale and the Del-Tones - Misirlou, surf rock history
Dick Dale and the Del-Tones and Misrilou made the History of Surf Rock with a massive dose of reverb, although Misrilou (Μισιρλού in greek girl from Misri, where Misri is meaning Egypt coming from Arab via Turkey) was originally a Greek traditional rebetiko (a style that originated with the Greek refugees from Turkey) song composed around 1920, it can be considered one of the mile stones of surf rock together with Wipeout, Pipeline Surfin Bird and some proto-surf by Link Wray, partly also cuz of the revival lounched by Quentin Trantino's movie Pulp Fiction. Southern California ca. 1960 was a melting-pot of many strains of musical thought. Rock and Roll music was popular, with instrumental rockers such as Duane Eddy, Link Wray, and Santo and Johnny proving that strong vocal ability was unnecessary to achieve a level of stardom. Los Angeles was a hub of Jazz activity, and the biggest acts typically played there. Unlike much of the US at the time, large numbers of Mexicans lived in this part of California, and their music was no doubt heard by many aspiring musicians of the era. Rock instrumentation, with an aggressive jazz-influenced drummer and some Latin influences equals Surf music. It merely required a few local talents to achieve a level of popularity before a trend was born. Most Early surf bands were formed in Southern California area, with groups such as Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, the Challengers, Eddie & the Showmen and the Surfaris. Orange County in particular ...
