Fairport Convention Maidstone 1970
This film, directed and restored by renowned British film director Tony Palmer, captures the band at the Maidstone Fiesta during the summer of 1970 as they run through their set of the time which included various jigs and reels and the songs Sir Patrick Spens and Now Be Thankful. This line up was, and still is, considered one of the key line ups of Fairport Convention: Richard Thompson (Vocals, Guitar), Dave Swarbrick (Vocals,Fiddle, Mandolin), Dave Pegg (Vocals, Bass Guitar, Mandolin), Dave Mattacks (Drums, Percussion), and Simon Nicol (Vocals,Guitar,Electric Dulcimer). Apart from the footage contained on this DVD, the Full House line up were never filmed commercially until reunions at the bands regular Cropredy Festival years later. This film also features two songs from Matthews Southern Comfort, the band led by former Fairport Convention member Ian Matthews. Matthews Southern Comfort would also go on to have a massive hit single with a cover of the Joni Mitchell song Woodstock in late 1970. The DVD also includes bonus footage of an exclusive interview filmed in spring 2007 with director Tony Palmer where he explains how he first met Fairport Convention and his thoughts on the band and the film over thirty five years later. This interview is a rare insight into the workings of one of the most unique and treasured of Britains bands.

Rip Torn vs Norman Mailer - the infamous "Maidstone" brawl - UNCUT!
This is the final scene from Norman Mailer's MAIDSTONE, in which he played the part of a famous movie director running for President of the United States, who is supposed to be assassinated in the finale. Mailer concluded principal photography without resolving the final scene, and Rip Torn (playing his brother-in-law and assassin) allegedly decided to take it upon himself to "improvise" an attack by hitting Mailer on the head with a small hammer, drawing blood. Mailer retaliated by tackling and then nearly chewing Torn's ear off as they grappled viciously, and it rapidly escalated into an unhinged on-camera brawl as Mailer's horrified kids screamed in terror. This is the completely uncut sequence. I have to wonder how "unplanned" it was, as the camera is obviously following Rip closely in the moments before the attack, and if principal photography had finished the day before, why was the camera crew still hanging around filming Rip and the Mailer family? Its more like Mailer knew Rip would pull something for the camera, but didnt know what, and overreacted because he wasnt expecting him to use a real hammer and actually start hitting him with it. Mailer's verbal reaction is oddly artificial (although the ear chewing is very real and painful to watch) and his wife seems to be lurking just off camera, and then she suddenly starts screaming like a banshee, which is what sets the kids off. Rip seems to be truly apologetic and convincing in the moments after the fight, but ...

FAIRPORT CONVENTION - NOW BE THANKFUL
2007 sees Fairport Convention celebrating their fortieth anniversary. This uniquely British Band which started out as an English answer to Jefferson Airplane soon broke free of the conventional rock bounds by mixing traditional English folk music with rock instrumentation. In doing so the band became groundbreaking musical pioneers inventing a whole new genre called "Folk Rock". By 1970 Fairport Convention had been together as a band for some three years. During this period the band had recorded and released five studio albums with one of the albums Liege and Lief being hailed as genre defining. Some feat when you consider that most of the band were still in their early twenties! By the time of the filming of this performance the band had recorded their most recent album Full House with the line up featuring founder members Richard Thompson and Simon Nicol alongside Dave Pegg, Dave Swarbrick and drummer Dave Mattacks. This line up was, and still is considered one of the key line ups of Fairport Convention, although the band only managed one studio album and a posthumous live album before Richard Thompson departed. Apart from the footage contained on this DVD the Full House line up were never filmed commercially until reunions at the band's regular Cropredy Festival years later. The film directed by renowned British film director Tony Palmer captures the band at the Maidstone Fiesta during the summer of 1970 as they run through their set of the time which included various ...

207 Stedman Caters, Collegiate Church of St Mary Ashford; Trinity Sunday 2010
The bells of St Mary the Virgin, Ashford, Kent being rung to a touch of 207 Stedman Caters prior to Sung Evensong on 30th May Trinity Sunday 2010. The bells were augmented to 10 by the addition of two trebles in 1970 and are arguably the second finest ring of ten bells in Kent after the fine Taylor Ten of the Collegiate Church of All Saints, Maidstone which all date from the mid 1950's. The oldest bells in the Ashford peal date back to the early 17th century however and have rung out over a town which has seen some of the most sweeping changes over the centuries of any English Town.
