''Live with Regis and Kelly'' is a syndicated American television morning talk show, hosted by Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa. The show, known as ''Live with Regis and Kathie Lee'' when Kathie Lee Gifford was co-hosting, has aired since 1983 in New York City and 1988 nationwide. Tony Pigg has been the show's announcer since its conception. The show began broadcasting in high definition in its 2008–09 season.

On January 18, 2011, Regis Philbin announced that he will be leaving the show at the expiration of his current contract, sometime in late November 2011. Producers say that ''Live'' will continue with Kelly Ripa, but a new co-host has not yet been announced.

History

''The Morning Show'' (1983-1988)

The show's original title was "The Morning Show", a local show, that was broadcast only in the New York City area. It premiered on April 4, 1983, and the original hosts were Regis Philbin and Cyndy Garvey. In 1984, Garvey left the show, and was replaced by Ann Abernathy. When Ann Abernathy became pregnant in 1985, she also decided to leave the show. She was replaced by Kathie Lee Gifford. Gifford would remain Philbin's co-host from June 24, 1985 - July 28, 2000.

''Live with Regis and Kathie Lee'' (1988–2000)

In the weeks leading up to the show's national debut, the title was changed to ''Live with Regis and Kathie Lee'' to prepare for the expansion. On September 5, 1988, Buena Vista Television (BVTV) began syndicating the show nationally.

In 1996, The Walt Disney Company, BVTV's parent company, acquired ABC (and WABC).

On February 29, 2000, Gifford announced her decision to leave the show to pursue her singing career, and spend more time with her family. Her last show was on July 28, 2000.

''Live with Regis'' (2000–2001)

After Gifford's departure, the show, renamed ''Live with Regis'', continued with guest co-hosts including Philbin's wife Joy, among others. During this time, Philbin won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host, and was also hosting ABC's popular ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire''. During "auditions" for co-hosts, Kelly Ripa became a favorite and front-runner, especially after a segment on the first episode on which she was a guest host on November 1, 2000.

''Live with Regis and Kelly'' (2001–2011)

Ripa was named the permanent co-host on February 5, 2001, and the show was retitled ''Live with Regis and Kelly''. Since Ripa took over, the show's ratings have increased according to E!. Kathie Lee Gifford returned as special co-host alongside Regis and Kelly on September 14, 2007, to celebrate ''Live'' 20 years in national syndication, and as a guest on April 14, 2009.

Philbin announced on March 12, 2007 that he would undergo heart bypass surgery on March 21, 2007 after experiencing symptoms of heart disease. Guest co-hosts hosted alongside Ripa during Philbin's absence. He returned to his hosting duties on April 26, 2007. Philbin later announced on November 23, 2009 that he would undergo hip replacement on December 1, 2009. Guest co-hosts again hosted alongside Ripa during Philbin's absence. He returned to his hosting duties on January 4, 2010.

On January 18, 2011, Regis announced that he would leave the show at the end of this season. On February 7, 2011, it was confirmed that Regis will officially leave at the end of November 2011.

On June 19, 2011 both Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host.

Production

''Live'', as implied in its name, is broadcast live weekdays at 9 a.m. ET, and on tape delay at 9 a.m. local time on stations west of the Eastern Time Zone, with few exceptions; as such, it is one of the few first-run syndicated programs to broadcast in a common timeslot on most stations carrying it. The show airs on all of ABC's owned-and-operated stations with the exception of WLS-TV in Chicago, where ''The Oprah Winfrey Show'' airs in that time slot (similar to ''Live'', ''Oprah'' evolved from the former ''AM Chicago'', a morning talk show on WLS hosted by Oprah Winfrey in the 1980s). Instead, ''Live'' airs on the local feed of WGN-TV. (Because of syndex laws, it does not air on WGN's superstation feed.)

The show features bantering between Regis and Kelly, phone-in contests, celebrity and non-celebrity guests. It is produced by Michael Gelman. The first 22 minutes, known as "host chat", is improvised and also the most popular segment. During the segment, the hosts often react to stories in the local newspapers or other media. The host chat segment typically plays on the contrast between Philbin's cantankerous on screen persona and Ripa's, and previously Gifford's, more cheerful and sunny disposition. Following the host chat, a home viewer is called to participate in a LIVE's Travel Trivia, with the chance to win a vacation prize package and a prize for the audience. Following the contest, the rest of the show features special segments and interviews with both celebrities and regular people with a story to tell. The final 3 minutes is the "Regis and Kelly's Inbox" segment, when viewer mail is read.

Its latest theme song, composed by Gabriel Saientz after an on-air, $100,000 contest, made its debut on January 5, 2009, the day "Live" started broadcasting in high definition. Slight changes such as new furniture and flooring were made to the set.

''Live'' has consistently been rated among the top daytime talk shows in the US, behind ''The Oprah Winfrey Show''.

The ''Live'' series has inspired similarly formatted talk shows. Some have been successful (''The View''), while others have had limited or no success (''The Tony Danza Show'', ''Living It Up! With Ali & Jack''). The now canceled British television series, ''Today with Des and Mel'', was based on ''Live''.

Real Person (2000)

In October 2000, before Kelly Ripa was confirmed as the permanent replacement for Kathie Lee Gifford, non-celebrities were chosen as guest co-hosts in the "Real Person Co-host for a Day Search."

Co-Ed (2001)

In June 2001, five college students were picked to co-host the show with Regis while Kelly Ripa was on maternity leave in the "Co-Ed Co-host for a Day Search." Among those chosen were Stacie Watts, Maria Sansone, and Monica Palumbo.

LIVE! goes on location twice per season to various locations. Among those previously visited are New Orleans, Chicago, Las Vegas, Prince Edward Island, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Monaco, Hawaii, Aspen, Colorado, San Francisco, Detroit, Branson, Missouri, Walt Disney World, Arizona, Niagara Falls, San Antonio, Mount Rushmore, and Bahamas. While on their resorts, Regis and Kelly transplant LIVE's own brand of entertainment-oriented talk with the beauty of the particular location providing a colorful backdrop to the show's celebrity guests and musical performances.

Every season, Regis and Kelly also host a Halloween special where the co-hosts portray some of the best moments and characters of the past year. The days guests also dress up in costumes that follow in the theme of the show (e.g. reality television). Additionally, prizes are awarded to the audience members with the best costumes. For Valentine's Day, Regis and Kelly get into the spirit by allowing male viewers to propose on their show. They also play matchmaker to friends, and marry couples live on the air. LIVE's 20th Anniversary

Regis, Kelly and former co-host Kathie Lee Gifford celebrated LIVE's 20th season on September 14, 2007. They received anniversary wishes from Oprah Winfrey, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O'Brien, Howie Mandel, Ryan Seacrest, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, Frank Gifford, and Mark Consuelos. Regis and Kelly received a Proclamation from Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City, declaring September 3 "LIVE! Day."

September 11, 2001

On September 18, the first show back after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, ''Live'' was on the air for an extended time with Philbin and Ripa discussing the attacks. The opening credits featured a still image of an American flag and the World Trade Center.

Shia Saide LaBeouf (, ; born June 11, 1986) is an American actor who became known among younger audiences for his part in the Disney Channel series ''Even Stevens'' and made his film debut in ''Holes'' (2003). In 2007, he starred as the leads in ''Disturbia'' and ''Transformers''. His other films include ''Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'', ''Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'', ''Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps'' (2010), and ''Transformers: Dark of the Moon'' (2011). In 2004, he made his directorial debut with "Let's Love Hate" and later shot a music video for "I Never Knew You" by rapper ''Cage''.

Early life

LaBeouf was born in Los Angeles, the only child of Shayna (née Saide) and Jeffrey Craig LaBeouf. His mother is a dancer and ballerina turned visual artist and clothing jewelry designer. His father is a Vietnam War veteran who had numerous jobs. LaBeouf's mother is Jewish and his father is a Cajun. LaBeouf was raised in his mother's Jewish religion and had a Bar Mitzvah; He was also baptized in the Angelus church.

LaBeouf has described his parents as "hippies", his father as "tough as nails and a different breed of man", and his upbringing as similar to a "hippy lifestyle", stating that his parents were "pretty weird people, but they loved me and I loved them." The actor also accompanied his father to meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous . LaBeouf has also said he was subjected to verbal and mental abuse by his father, who once pointed a gun at his son during a Vietnam War flashback. LaBeouf says his father was "on drugs" during his childhood and was placed in drug rehabilitation for heroin addiction while LaBeouf's mother was "trying to hold down the fort." His parents eventually divorced, mainly due to financial problems, and LaBeouf had what he has described as a "good childhood", growing up poor in Echo Park with his mother, who worked selling fabrics and brooches. LaBeouf's uncle was going to adopt him at one stage because his parents could not afford to have him anymore and "they had too much pride to go on welfare or food stamps." As a way of dealing with his parents' divorce, he would perform for his family, mimicking his father. LaBeouf remains close to and financially supports both of his parents.

He attended 32nd Street Visual and Performing Arts Magnet in Los Angeles (LAUSD) and Alexander Hamilton High School, although he received most of his education from tutors. In an interview, LaBeouf said that, looking back on his childhood, he feels grateful and considers some of those memories scars.

When LaBeouf was 19, after a neighbor in his Studio City apartment complex had allegedly insulted his mother and rear-ended her car, LaBeouf brought a knife, and a friend for backup, to the neighbor's apartment, which resulted in LaBeouf being assaulted by the neighbor and six of the neighbor's friends.

Career

1996–2006: Disney career

Prior to acting, LaBeouf practiced comedy around his neighborhood as an "escape" from a hostile environment At age 10, he began performing stand-up at comedy clubs, describing his appeal as having "disgustingly dirty" material and a "50-year-old mouth on the 10-year-old kid." He subsequently found an agent through the Yellow Pages and was taken on after pretending to be his own manager. LaBeouf has said that he initially became an actor because his family was broke, not because he wanted to pursue an acting career, having originally gotten the idea from a child actor he met who had things he wanted. In the early 2000s, LaBeouf became known among young audiences after playing Louis Stevens on the Disney Channel weekly program ''Even Stevens'', a role that later earned him a Daytime Emmy Award. He has said that "[he] grew up on that show" and being cast was the "best thing" that happened to him. In the next several years, he appeared in the well-received film adaption ''Holes'' (2003). In 2005 he co-starred in ''Constantine'', playing the role of Chas Kramer, with Keanu Reeves in the starring role. LaBeouf made his directorial debut with the short film ''Let's Love Hate'' with Lorenzo Eduardo. He has played real-life people, including golfer Francis Ouimet and the younger version of Dito Montiel in ''A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints'' (2006).

2007–08: Career breakthrough

LaBeouf starred in ''Disturbia'', a thriller released on April 13, as a teenager under house arrest who suspects that his neighbor is a serial killer, which he considered a "character-driven" role. He received positive reviews for the role, with ''The Buffalo News'' saying, he "is able to simultaneously pull off [the character's] anger, remorse and intelligence". He hosted ''Saturday Night Live'' on April 14, and on May 10, 2008. He next played Sam Witwicky, who becomes involved in the Autobot-Decepticon war on Earth, in ''Transformers''.

In ''Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'' (2008) he was Indiana Jones' greaser son Mutt Williams. His performance was met with mixed reviews with Todd Gilchrist of IGN commenting "one can't quite help but wonder what Spielberg saw in the young actor that inspired him to cast LaBeouf". His next film was ''Eagle Eye'', released on September 26. His performance received mixed reviews, with Josh Bell of ''Las Vegas Weekly'' saying he "makes a credible bid for action-hero status, although his occasional stabs at emotional depth don’t really go anywhere."

2009–present: ''Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'' and beyond

In February, he directed the music video for "I Never Knew You", a single off rapper Cage's third album, ''Depart From Me''. It was shot in LA and features cameos by other Definitive Jux artists. The two will also team up to make a biopic about the rapper's life, starring LaBeouf. Of making the video, LaBeouf said, "I'm 22 and I'm directing my favorite rapper's music video. This shit is better than riding unicorns."

LaBeouf reprised the role of Sam Witwicky in the 2009 sequel to ''Transformers'', ''Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen''. Filming for the movie began in May 2008 and ended in late 2008. Due to LaBeouf's injury from his car accident, Bay and screen writer Roberto Orci had to rewrite the script to protect his hand throughout filming. LaBeouf said production was only delayed two days after his accident because Bay made up for it by filming second unit scenes, and LaBeouf recovered a few weeks earlier than expected, allowing him to return to the set. Near the end of filming, LaBeouf injured his eye when he hit a prop; the injury required seven stitches. He resumed filming two hours later. The movie grossed $800 million, but received mostly negative review by critics, with LaBeouf sharing a nomination for the "Worst Screen Couple of 2009" Razzie Award with "either Megan Fox or any Transformer."

His only 2010 movie was the Oliver Stone-directed film ''Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps'', the sequel to ''Wall Street'' (1987), playing an ambitious Wall Street trader. It became another mixed critical success for him. He reprised his role in the third ''Transformers'' film, ''Transformers: Dark of the Moon'', which was released on June 28, 2011. He will play a bootlegger in John Hillcoat's ''The Wettest County in the World''.

Personal life

At 18, he bought his own home. He is a cigarette smoker. He has said that religion "never made sense" to him, and also that he has a "personal relationship with God that happens to work within the confines of Judaism".

LaBeouf has three tattoos, which are: 1986–2004 on his inner right wrist, a dog paw tattoo on his upper left arm, and a hand with a shackle on it on his left upper side torso. He got the tattoo on his wrist as a "precautionary" to not forget his childhood. LaBeouf described the upper side torso tattoo as "an artist drawing his own prison. Just life. That’s where I’m at". He completed the 2010 LA Marathon on March 21, 2010 with a time of 4 hours, 35 minutes and 31 seconds.

Relationships

From 2004 to 2007, LaBeouf dated China Brezner, whom he met on the set of ''The Greatest Game Ever Played''. They broke up because he became too busy with his work to put any time into the relationship, and he described the break-up as being like "rebuilding after a tornado." He dated British actress and ''Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps'' co-star Carey Mulligan from August 2009 to October 2010; they were introduced by the film's director, Oliver Stone, prior to filming and began dating shortly after. Of that relationship he said: "I still love her. I think she's a fucking awesome person and an incredible actress. We're still pals. I wouldn't take any of it back, and I don't think she would either. It just ran its course."

In the August 2011 issue of ''Details'' magazine, he also admitted to having been in a relationship with Isabel Lucas while she was still dating Adrian Grenier and Megan Fox while she was still seeing her now husband Brian Austin Green.

Legal troubles

Early in the morning of November 4, 2007, a security guard asked LaBeouf to leave a Chicago Walgreens; after refusing to do so, LaBeouf was arrested for misdemeanor criminal trespassing. The criminal charges were dropped on December 12, 2007.

In March 2008, an arrest warrant was issued for LaBeouf, after he failed to make a court appearance. The hearing was in relation to a ticket he had received for unlawful smoking in Burbank, California, in February 2008. When neither LaBeouf nor a lawyer appeared at the court, at 8:30 a.m., a $1000 bench warrant was issued for his arrest. However, the court commissioner in California recalled this warrant on March 19, 2008, after the actor’s attorney arrived a day late to plead not guilty on LaBeouf's behalf, and a pre-trial hearing was set for April 24, 2008. The charge was dismissed, after the actor paid a $500 fine.

At approximately 3 A.M. on July 27, 2008, LaBeouf was involved in a car crash, at the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Fountain Avenue in Los Angeles. His Ford F-150 was hit from the side by a vehicle running a red light. LaBeouf had been gripping the top of the windowsill as he drove and, upon impact, the truck rolled onto his exposed left hand, crushing it. While responding to the accident, police officers smelled alcohol on LaBeouf's breath. Because he refused a breathalyzer examination, authorities arrested LaBeouf at the scene for misdemeanor drunk driving, and his driver's license was suspended for one year. Michael Bay stated that LaBeouf had been drinking hours before the car accident and he had felt that, by the time the accident had occurred, the alcohol had worn off. LaBeouf had to undergo one of many hand surgeries immediately after the accident. His passenger, Isabel Lucas, and the driver and passenger in the other car suffered only minor injuries. Due to severe damages from the accident, LaBeouf's truck was totaled; his father keeps the vehicle at his home as a memento. Two days later, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman announced that LaBeouf was not at fault in the accident as the other driver had run a red light. LaBeouf returned to the set of the ''Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'', at this time, and shooting resumed. In September of that year, LaBeouf described the car accident as being "eye-opening and terrifying." He said that, as a result of the injuries, he had screws and plates put in his left hand; there is also scarring. A screw was placed in one of his knuckles, and he had a shaved piece of bone from his hip made into a bone for his finger. In April 2009, he stated he had undergone three hand surgeries. He said that he would regain "probably about 80-something percent" use of his hand and, while he would be able to make a fist again, "there’s a knuckle [I will] never be able to move again." In May 2010, he said that he has "completely" regained movement in his fingers. In June 2011, in an interview in ''Details'' magazine, he claimed that he and Isabel Lucas were "philandering around" before the accident occurred.

In the early morning of February 5, 2011, he was involved in an altercation with another patron at the Mad Bull's Tavern bar in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, which resulted in the actor getting punched in the face. Both LaBeouf and the unnamed patron were placed in handcuffs and questioned by a Los Angeles Police Department officer but later released with no arrest being made.

Robert Douglas Thomas Pattinson (born 13 May 1986) is an English actor, model, musician, and producer. Born and raised in London, Pattinson started out his career by playing the role of Cedric Diggory in ''Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire''. Later, he landed the leading role of Edward Cullen in the film adaptations of the ''Twilight'' novels by Stephenie Meyer, and came to worldwide fame. Pattinson was ranked as one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood based on 2009 earnings. In 2010, Pattinson was named one of ''TIME'' magazine's 100 Most Influential People in The World, and also in the same year ''Forbes'' ranked him as one of the most powerful celebrities in the world in the Forbes Celebrity 100.

Early life

Pattinson was born in London. His mother, Clare, worked for a modelling agency, and his father, Richard, imported vintage cars from the U.S. Pattinson has two elder sisters, singer Lizzy Pattinson, and Victoria Pattinson. Growing up in the Barnes suburb of London, he attended Tower House School until he was 12, and then The Harrodian School. He became involved in amateur theatre at the Barnes Theatre Company. He auditioned and was cast in a small role in ''Guys and Dolls''. He next auditioned for Thornton Wilder's ''Our Town'' and was cast as George Gibbs. He also played in ''Anything Goes'' and ''Macbeth''. He caught the attention of an acting agent in a production of ''Tess of the d'Urbervilles'' and began looking for professional roles.

Career

Modelling

Pattinson began modelling when he was twelve years old, but the number of jobs began to decrease only four years later. In December 2008 he blamed the lack of work as a model on his masculine appearance: "When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs, because it was during that period where the androgynous look was cool. Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs. I had the most unsuccessful modelling career." Pattinson appeared in the advertising campaign for Hackett's autumn 2007 collection.

Acting

Pattinson had supporting roles in the made for television film ''Ring of the Nibelungs'' in 2004 and in director Mira Nair’s ''Vanity Fair'', although his scenes in the latter were deleted and only appear on the DVD version. In May 2005, he was slated to appear in the UK premiere of ''The Woman Before'' at the Royal Court Theatre, but was fired shortly before the opening night and was replaced by Tom Riley. Later that year he played Cedric Diggory in ''Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire''. For this role he was named that year's ''British Star of Tomorrow'' by ''The Times''. He has more than once been touted as the next Jude Law.

Pattinson played Edward Cullen in the film ''Twilight'', based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling novel of the same name, which was released on 21 November 2008 in North America. According to ''TV Guide'', Pattinson was initially apprehensive about auditioning for the role of Edward Cullen, fearful that he would not be able to live up to the "perfection" expected from the character. He reprised his role as Edward Cullen in the ''Twilight'' sequels ''The Twilight Saga: New Moon'' and ''The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'', which was released 30 June 2010.

Pattinson had lead roles in the feature films ''Little Ashes'' (in which he plays Salvador Dalí), ''How to Be'' (a British comedy), and the short film ''The Summer House''.

In 2009, Pattinson presented at the 81st Academy Awards. On 10 November, Revolver Entertainment released the DVD ''Robsessed'', a documentary which details Pattinson's life and popularity.

In 2010, Pattinson executively produced and starred in the film ''Remember Me'', which was released on 12 March 2010. On 13 May 2010, Pattinson appeared on ''The Oprah Winfrey Show'' for ''The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'' and also made an appearance on ''The Ellen DeGeneres Show'' on 18 May, which aired the following day. Pattinson attended the official worldwide red carpet premiere for ''The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'' on 24 June 2010 at the Los Angeles Nokia Theatre.

In 2011, he starred in ''Water for Elephants'', a film adaptation of the Sara Gruen novel of the same name, with Christoph Waltz and Reese Witherspoon.

He will play Georges Duroy in a film adaptation of the 1885 novel ''Bel Ami'', with Uma Thurman, which will be released in 2011. He will also appear in a theatre production for producer David Pugh.

Music

Pattinson plays guitar and piano, and composes his own music. He also appears as the singer of two songs on the ''Twilight'' soundtrack: "Never Think", which he co-wrote with Sam Bradley, and "Let Me Sign", which was written by Marcus Foster and Bobby Long. The songs were included in the film after director Catherine Hardwicke added Pattinson's recordings into an early cut without his knowledge, and he agreed that "one of them specifically, it really made the scene better. It was like it was supposed to be there." The soundtrack for the film ''How to Be'' features three original songs performed by Pattinson and written by composer Joe Hastings.

Aside from recording for the soundtracks, Pattinson has said, "I've never really recorded anything – I just played in pubs and stuff", and when asked about a professional music career, he said, "Music is my back-up plan if acting fails." In 2010, Pattinson was awarded the 'Hollywood's Most Influential Top Unexpected Musicians' award.

Taylor Daniel Lautner (pronounced , ; born February 11, 1992) is an American actor, voice actor, model, and martial artist. As a child, Lautner took up martial arts and was ranked number one in his category by the American Sports Karate Association. Lautner soon thereafter began his acting career, appearing in bit roles in comedy series such as ''The Bernie Mac Show'' (2003) and ''My Wife and Kids'' (2004), before having voice roles in television series like ''What's New, Scooby-Doo?'' (2005) and ''Danny Phantom'' (2005). In 2005, he appeared in the film ''Cheaper by the Dozen 2'' and starred in ''The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D''.

Lautner got his big break when he was cast as Jacob Black in ''The Twilight Saga'' film series, beginning with the first film, ''Twilight'' (2008). Early life

Lautner was born on February 11, 1992 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Deborah and Daniel Lautner. His mother works for a software development company, while his father is a Midwest Airlines pilot. He has one younger sister named Makena. Raised as a Roman Catholic, Lautner is of mixed German, French, and Dutch heritage, and has "distant" Native American ancestry (specifically Ottawa and Potawatomi) through his mother. Lautner grew up in Hudsonville, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids. Lautner stated that when he was younger he was bullied in school because he was an actor. He commented, "I just had to tell myself I can't let this get to me. This is what I love to do. And I'm going to continue doing it."

He took his first karate class at the age of six. A year later, he attended the national karate tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, where he met Michael Chaturantabut, the founder of Xtreme Martial Arts. Chaturantabut invited Lautner to a camp he held at University of California, Los Angeles. Lautner trained with Chaturantabut for several years, earning his black belt by the age of eight, and winning several junior world championships. He appeared in an ISKA karate event televised on ESPN in 2003 that was later lampooned on the sports-comedy show Cheap Seats that first aired in 2006.

In junior high, Lautner—who was involved in karate, baseball and hip-hop dance—won the award for "Best Smile" and played in the school's Turkey Bowl American Football game. He went to public school in Valencia until his sophomore year of high school.

Chaturantabut, who once portrayed the Blue Ranger in ''Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue'', suggested to Lautner that he take up acting. For a few years, the Lautners flew from Michigan to Los Angeles for auditions when his talent agency called, and returned to Grand Rapids for school sometimes the same day. Lautner balanced karate and acting with being on the football and baseball teams at his school, and taking up jazz and hip-hop dance. After that became tiring, Lautner and his family decided to move to California for a month, to try it out, before moving to Santa Clarita, California, permanently in 2002.

Career

2001–07: Early career

In his first months after moving to Los Angeles, Lautner appeared in small television roles, small film roles, and ads and commercials. In 2001, Lautner first appeared in the made-for-television film, ''Shadow Fury''. He then got a voice-over job in a commercial for ''Rugrats Go Wild''. He then appeared in small television parts on ''The Bernie Mac Show'', ''My Wife and Kids'', and ''Summerland''. Lautner then earned voice-over roles in animated series such as ''Danny Phantom'', ''Duck Dodgers'', and ''What's New, Scooby-Doo?''. In 2005, he had a role as Elliot Murtaugh in the comedy film ''Cheaper by the Dozen 2''. The same year, he earned his first breakout role, starring in the film, ''The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D''. Lautner spent three months on location in Austin, Texas, to film the movie, which was received with negative reviews from critics, and was a minor international success. However, Lautner was nominated at the 2006 Young Artist Awards for Best Performance in a Feature Film by a Leading Actor. For the film, Lautner choreographed all of his fight scenes after director Robert Rodríguez learned of his extensive martial arts training. Months later, he was cast as Eliot Murtaugh in ''Cheaper by the Dozen 2'', which was panned by critics, being named one of the "Worst Films of the 2000s" by Rotten Tomatoes. After returning from Canada filming the latter movie, Lautner said he realized his newfound fame, from ''Sharkboy and Lavagirl''. In 2008 he appeared in the show ''Love Inc.'' and the TV special ''He's a Bully, Charlie Brown''. Two years later, Lautner appeared in a lead role in the short-lived NBC drama, ''My Own Worst Enemy'', portraying Christian Slater's son, Jack Spivey. ''Rolling Stone'' coined his early roles as either "the popular kid, jock, or bully."

2008–09: Breakthrough and ''The Twilight Series''

In 2007, filmmakers began a search for actors to portray Jacob Black, a Native American friend of lead character Bella Swan in ''Twilight'', the first film in the The ''Twilight'' Saga film series. In January 2008, an open casting call was held in Portland, Oregon. Lautner had not heard of the ''Twilight'' series before, but was urged by his agent to audition. At his audition, he read lines with Kristen Stewart, who had already been cast as Bella, and they acted out scenes from ''The Twilight Saga: New Moon'' and ''The Twilight Saga: Eclipse''. The film was a commercial success, earning $69 million its opening weekend, and has grossed $392 million worldwide. It received mixed reviews from critics, having a "Rotten" rating with a weighted average of 5.5/10. In describing the critical consensus, it stated: "Having lost much of its bite transitioning to the big screen, ''Twilight'' will please its devoted fans, but do little for the uninitiated." On Metacritic, which assigns a weighted mean rating out of 100 reviews from film critics, it has an average score of 56 from the 37 reviews. At the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, Lautner was nominated for Male Breakthrough Performance, which was won by co-star Robert Pattinson.

Initially, director Chris Weitz wanted to recast the role of Jacob Black for ''Twilight'''s sequel, ''The Twilight Saga: New Moon'', due to the major physical changes that occur in Black between the two novels, and have an actor that would accurately portray "the new, larger Jacob Black." Black's role in the novel also increases significantly, with him falling in love with Bella and becoming a werewolf, putting the actor in a starring role. Representatives for Weitz had stated that they were make a full effort to recast the "high-profile gig," and MTV News confirmed that Weitz was looking at Michael Copon to take on the role; however, Summit Entertainment said a decision had not been made. In an attempt to keep the role, Lautner weight-trained extensively and gained approximately 30 pounds of muscle. In January 2009, Weitz and Summit Entertainment announced that Lautner would continue to play the role of Jacob in the sequel. In an interview, fellow cast member Kristen Stewart talked about Lautner's transformation saying, "He's an entirely different person physically." Stewart later said, "He gets a lot of attention because he's buff, but I think as soon as the movie comes out, people are going to realize that's not why he got the job." Co-star Robert Pattinson said after seeing Lautner's body, "I saw him and thought 'Jesus, I'm going to get fired." In an interview with ''The Wrap'', Weitz said Lautner deserved a lot of credit for the movie's box office, stating, "If you look at the movie, it should have been the weakest in the franchise, because Robert Pattinson doesn't play as big a role." Weitz said Lautner had to "pick up that slack, and if his character hadn't been emotionally, not just physically, appealing, the movie wouldn't have been as big a hit." The commercial performance of the film outpaced the first film, setting several box office records including the biggest midnight opening in the United States and Canada and the biggest single-day opening. The opening weekend of ''New Moon'' is the third highest opening weekend in domestic history with $142,839,137. ''The Twilight Saga: New Moon'' also has the sixth highest worldwide opening weekend with $274.9 million total. Critical reception was less favorable, with the movie getting a 4.6/10 average from Rotten Tomatoes, and a 44 on Metacritic. Lautner won Favorite Breakout Movie Actor at the 35th People's Choice Awards.

Although it began after the release of the first film, upon release of ''New Moon'', Lautner and his co-stars Stewart and Pattinson transitioned to teen idol status, with Lautner particularly admired by teens for his new physical characteristics, becoming a sex symbol. The trio appeared on many covers and televised appearances together. In between the second and third films in the ''Twilight'' series, Lautner was a part of the ensemble cast in the movie ''Valentine's Day'' as Willy Harrington, acting alongside his rumored girlfriend at the time, American country pop singer Taylor Swift. The duo was nominated at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards for Best Kiss. Although it received generally negative reviews, the film grossed $213 million and had the second biggest opening in the United States for a romantic comedy film. Lautner presented at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and the 82nd Academy Awards. Lautner hosted ''Saturday Night Live'' on December 12, 2009, making him one of the youngest celebrity hosts in the show's history.

2010 to present: Continuing ''Twilight'' and other projects

Lautner returned for the third ''Twilight'' film, ''The Twilight Saga: Eclipse'', in 2010. Receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film surpassed its predecessor to become the highest-grossing film of the franchise and the highest-grossing romantic fantasy, werewolf and vampire movie of all time at the American and Canadian box office. It ranks as the 36th highest grossing film of all-time in the U.S. and Canada. The popularity of Lautner and his cast members continued to summit, especially via the "Team Edward vs. Team Jacob" campaign that promoted the film. Lautner's fanbase also began to expand to older audiences. Lautner won "Best Fantasy Actor" at the 2010 Scream Awards, and he is nominated for "Favorite Movie Actor" for his role in ''Eclipse'' at the 37th People's Choice Awards. On November 2010 ''The Hollywood Reporter'' named Lautner as one of the young male actors who are “pushing – or being pushed” into taking over Hollywood as the new “A-List”.

Lautner was initially supposed to be in two films, ''Northern Lights'' and a movie based on Max Steel, but pulled out of both films due to scheduling conflicts and better offers. Other planned projects were the lead in a movie about Stretch Armstrong and a hostage thriller, ''Cancun''. Lautner filmed a ''Bourne Identity''-esque spy film with Lily Collins, entitled ''Abduction'', which was released in September 2011. He will appear in the remaining parts of the ''Twilight'' series, the ''The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn'' films, which are anticipated to be released over a two-year period from 2011–2012.

Publications such as ''GQ'', ''Rolling Stone'', and ''People'' have referred to Lautner as a sex symbol, with the latter publication calling the actor a future epitome of pop culture. He has been called the new young adult star that can "both woo the girls with his intensity and impress the boys with his rugged agility." According to Mickey Rapkin of ''GQ'', the use of Lautner's physique in films has been compared to Megan Fox in her work. After his massive physical change following ''Twilight'', Lautner became a tabloid teen idol with his co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Lautner, determined to stay in the series, worked out every day and gained over 30 pounds of muscle in order to bulk up for the role of Jacob Black in the remaining films in the ''The Twilight Saga''. Michelle Lanz of MSN Wonderwall said that Lautner's change may have saved his career. Several critics credit Lautner's physical characteristics for much of the success of the ''Twilight'' series, with critic Sharon Waxman stating, "as a tabloid teen idol, he certainly deserves some credit for ''New Moon's'' $700 million worldwide gross." Lautner's abs in particular have been subject to media attention, with ''The Wrap'' stating that companies bidding for the actor in movies in 2011 would "shell out for the young actor's much-on-display though mostly untried abs." Mickey Rapkin of ''GQ'' said, "the film's marketing issues were solved when Lautner's "abdominal muscles became ''New Moon'''s main talking point, not to mention his calling card." He was named number one on Access Hollywood's "Top 5 Hollywood Abs" list.

Before the actor turned 18, his sexualized image was often critiqued, and subject to controversy. In December 2009, Lautner appeared on the cover of ''Rolling Stone'' in a wet t-shirt. Jennifer Cady of E! Online said to wait a few months when Lautner would "be of age, which will make this whole operation you got going on completely legal." In his interview with the magazine, after declining to talk about whether he was dating Taylor Swift, the magazine pressed Lautner on rumors of him being homosexual, which he brushed off. Brent Hartinger, a columnist for AfterElton, blasted the magazine, calling the questioning "unimaginably irresponsible," commenting that Lautner was just "a 17-year old kid" and that while the rumors were baseless and speculation from certain blogs and fans, it was disappointing that a "legitimate media outlet" would print gossip. Hartinger said the magazine reached a "new low" and did not have common decency, noting that there was not a line between "child and adult" although Lautner was in adult-like roles.

Lautner has stated that he doesn't want to be just known for his looks, as some have attributed his popularity to that and not his actual acting skill. In an interview, the actor revealed that he was originally supposed to have a baring scene in the movie ''Valentine's Day''. He stated, "The script said we were walking into school and Willy takes off his shirt. I said, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa. Time out. He's gonna take off his shirt in the middle of school? No, no, no. The reason I took off my shirt for ''New Moon'' is because it's written in the book that way. And there's reasons behind it." Lautner later said he would not bare his chest for any role that did not call for it. In June 2010, Lautner covered ''GQ'' magazine. The actor was lampooned in conservative writer Laura Ingraham's satirical ''The Obama Diaries'', commenting to have Lautner as a mascot for the White House Easter Egg Roll, to fit their health-conscious theme, and have Lautner don a furry bunny head and appear shirtless. In 2010, Lautner was ranked number two on ''Glamour'''s "50 Sexiest Men of 2010 " list. ''Men's Health'' ranked him at third on their list of "Top 10 Summer Bodies." Additionally in 2010, he was ranked fourth on ''People'''s "Most Amazing Bodies" list.

Personal life

Lautner has an intricate workout plan, which was covered by ''Men's Health'', and has a specific diet after developing his body for ''The Twilight Saga: New Moon''. In addition, he still practices and trains in martial arts regularly. He has stated that he is drug and alcohol free.

Lautner resides with his parents and younger sister in Valencia, California, which he says he prefers due to the dearth of paparazzi. Lautner has said that he has never thought of moving out on his own, stating, "The thing I love is that my home life hasn't changed. I still help out with the garbage. I still help out with the lawn." He owns a BMW 5 series, which have tinted windows for obscurity.

The boost given to his career by the success of the ''Twilight'' films made him too busy to attend school, so he took the California High School Proficiency Exam to graduate from high school in 2008. He has stated on the David Letterman show that if he does not have work, he would like to go back to school. He now takes online classes at his local community college.

In 2009, Lautner was linked romantically to American country pop singer Taylor Swift and American actress and pop singer Selena Gomez.
