Heinz College Announcement
Carnegie Mellon University's new H. John Heinz III College was dedicated Oct. 24 with a ceremony featuring Paul O'Neill, former US Treasury Secretary and member of the Heinz College Deans Advisory Council. He emphasized the vital role technology must play in policy and the impact that it will have on society a fitting speech given Heinz Colleges unique blend of public policy, management and technology disciplines. Teresa Heinz, chairman of the Heinz Family Philanthropies and The Heinz Endowments, was also in attendance and delivered a presentation on behalf of the Heinz Family to alumni and other guests. Formerly the Heinz School of Public Policy & Management, the Heinz College vision expands the academic menu and enriches its full-time graduate programs. The PhD program at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College (heinz.cmu.edu recently ranked one of the top in the United States for public policy, distinguishes itself from others because of its interdisciplinary nature and emphasis on solving business and policy problems. The PhD in Public Policy and Management equips students to address the increasing complexity of public policy issues in key areas like crime policy, drug policy, health economics, labor economics, and technology policy. The PhD in Information Systems and Management prepares students with a firm understanding of the technical and organizational aspects of information systems, and trains them in analytical and empirical skills to contribute to basic, scientific knowledge. The purpose of Strategic Presentation Skills, taught by Pamela Lewis and Julia Deems, is to develop strategies that result in data-driven presentations designed to accomplish specific objectives. By the end of the course students are expected to demonstrate ability to do the following: 1. Define a concise presentation objective 2. Analyze the audience to be addressed 3. Anticipate questions likely to be asked by this audience 4. Engage listeners' interest 5. Write a detailed outline that maps out the speaker's logical argument 6. Apply principles of ethos, pathos, and logos in each presentation 7. Design and explain concise, varied visuals 8. Respond confidently to questions during question and answer sessions 9.
