The broadcast starred Jane Froman, Felix Knight, Sonny Schuyler and the Victor Salon Group, conducted by Nathaniel Shilkret. The concert was later released on 78 rpm records. "Girl Crazy" first appeared on Broadway in 1930. The cast included Allen Kearns, Willie Howard, Ethel Merman, William Kent, Ginger Rogers, Eunice Healy, The Foursome, Donald Foster and the Red Nichols Orchestra. The pit orchestra included Glenn Miller, Gene Krupa, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden. Roger Edens was the onstage pianist for Ethel Merman. It was conducted on opening night by George Gershwin himself. It has been adapted three times for film, most notably in 1943 with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. In that version, the roles played by Ginger Rogers and Ethel Merman were combined into one, played by Garland.
