A day school—as opposed to a boarding school—is an institution where children (or high-school age adolescents) are given educational instruction during the day, after which the students return to their homes. The term can also be used to emphasize the length of full-day programs as opposed to after-school programs, as in Jewish day school.
The term day school is also increasingly used for a one-off series of lectures or classes, taking place on a single day, usually on a particular topic and usually directed at adult learners with little time to spare.
Georgetown Day School (GDS) is an independent coeducational PK-12 school located in Washington, D.C.. The school educates 1,075 elementary, middle, and high school students across two campuses in the city's Northwestern quadrant.
Founded in 1945 as Washington's first racially integrated school, it is known for its progressive climate and dedication to social justice. Students call teachers by their first names, and the high school allows students to leave the campus during school hours.
The school is known as one of the city's most academically rigorous and selective institutions, and it has educated the children of several high-ranking government officials, including former United States Attorney General Eric Holder, Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu.
GDS offers 18 Advanced Placement courses. High School features a comprehensive curriculum covering the humanities, mathematics, sciences, and the arts. Students are required to take 4 years of English courses and a freshman seminar focusing on diversity issues.
A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.
In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary and secondary education. Kindergarten or pre-school provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may also be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.

Each child's learning and development are at the core of the pre-kindergarten/kindergarten curriculum. Its goals are to help children feel comfortable with themselves, their teachers, and their peers in and outside the classroom; develop a sense of their own competence and self worth, and learn to feel positive about themselves as independent people in the world away from home; learn to effectively and happily interact with others; and learn to resolve conflicts and find cooperative solutions.
The NYU Wagner Women's Caucus has joined up with Girls Learn International to raise awareness about the need for girls education worldwide. We're asking people to finish the sentence "If I didn't have a school..." to make you think about what your education is worth to you and why it is important for girls around the world to go to school.
