Ph.D. candidate explores remote Guiana Shield
For the past several years, Lesley de Souza has focused her research efforts in a place so remote, it's nearly impossible to access: the Guiana Shield. A mountainous, forested region just north of Brazil, the Shield has no cities, cold drinks or showers. Instead, it welcomes visitors with attractions such as anacondas, piranhas, jaguars, venomous snakes and a tiny fish called a candiru that is rumored to invade humans by swimming up the urethra. de Souza knows that should she ever receive a poisonous snake or spider bite in the field, not much could be done; there is no medic standing by. But for her, the dangers are worth the rewards of researching the area's rich biodiversity.

Poison in the Lifeline (27min) 1995 Omai Gold Mine Disaster. POISON IN THE LIFELINE highlights the events and consequences of the Omai Mine disaster in Guyana (1995 ), tracing the history of the disaster and examining the situation of extractive industries in relation to the 40000 Amerindian people who live permanently in the interior. The current thrust towards large scale extractive industries carries very serious and demonstrated perils. The Canadian owned Omai Gold mine in Guyana with an annual production which exceeds a quarter of a million troy ounces of gold yearly, is one of South America's largest mines. In August 1995 the dam for the reservoir containing waste material broke sending millions of liters of sludge laced with cyanide (used for gold extraction) into Guyana's largest river. It was declared the worse mine disaster for the environment in history. The coordinators of the Guiana Shield Media Project were on the scene and able to document the consequences. The film also features a discussion about other extractive industries in both Guyana and Suriname.Extractive expansionism lies at the very heart of present day conflicts in the region.Extractive industries such as mining and logging, combined with increasing encroachments of market economies, are at the heart of social and cultural change. The human and natural environments of the region are being forced into a position of accommodation. The people of the Guiana Shield confront serious ongoing challenges ...

Robert Harman performs spontaneous and impromptu improvisations with talented youth while raising awareness for rainforest protection and regeneration. Camera: Jean-Tiamo www.robbyharman.com www.mgoodwin1.com Rainforest Festival 2011 defies challenges, shines light on Guiana Shield | Author DevSur PARAMARIBO--The third staging of the Rainforest Art Festival opens on Friday October 7th with a repeated, artistic call for conservation of the riches of the Guyana Shield. Facing slashed sponsoring budgets, organizer Artlab.sr had to be very inventive, says its board member Marisa Pieplenbosch. So sheer ingenuity prevailed; Pieplenbosch says the Rainforest Festival 2011 promises Suriname a series of spectacular events, strung into a festival that is even better than its predecessors. The festival that brings together creative art performance including dance, song, theater and art, was initiated in 2005 to promote awareness of rain forest protection. This year's edition is themed "the Guiana Shield", a 2.5 million km2 area of South America that spans from Colombia in the west to the Brazilian state of Amapá in the east, including the Venezuelan states of Delta Amacuro, Bolívar and Amazonas, all of Guyana, French Guiana, and Suriname and continuing into the Brazilian States of Pará, Roraima and Amazonas. All events that are part of the three-week staging of the festival will be in light of the Guiana Shield. "We're part of the Guiana shield, so it is fitting that in an event ...

The Labyrinth of Roraima, Venezuela
The Labyrinth is a large area famous for rocky mysterious sculptures, situated on the Roraima Tepui in Venezuela. Mount Roraima (also known as Roraima Tepui or Cerro Roraima in Spanish, and Monte Roraima in Portuguese), is the highest of the Pakaraima chain of tepui plateau in South America. First described by the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh in 1596, its 31 km2 summit area is defended by 400-metre-tall cliffs on all sides. The mountain includes the triple border point of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. Mount Roraima lies on the Guiana Shield in the southeastern corner of Venezuela's 30000 km2 Canaima National Park forming the highest peak of Guyana's Highland Range. The tabletop mountains of the park are considered some of the oldest geological formations on Earth, dating back to some two billion years ago in the Precambrian Era. The highest point in Guyana and the highest point of the Brazilian state of Roraima lie on the plateau, but Venezuela and Brazil have higher mountains elsewhere. The triple border point is at 5°12'08N, 60°44'07W, but the mountain's highest point is Maverick Rock, 2810 m, at the south end of the plateau and wholly within Venezuela.

On CP-tour with Stewart McPherson: Ascent of Mount Roraima
After visiting Auyán Tepui Stewart McPherson is now approaching Mount Roraima. After finding Utricularia humboldtii even at the foot of the tepui he starts the ascent. In his book "The Lost Worlds of the Guiana Highlands" he mentions the thrilling first ascent of the mountain in 1884 by Everard Im Thurn and Harry Perkins. Reaching the summit their first impression was to enter "some strange country of nightmares". Now Stewart McPherson shows us his encounter with the strange landscapes, the tod Oreophrynella, and CP like Utricularia quelchii, Drosera roraimae and Heliamphora nutans.
