Plant ID: Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla)
Plant ID: Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) Genus: Araucaria Species: heterophylla Family: ARAUCARIACEAE Common name: Norfolk Island Pine Plant type: Evergreen conifer Origin: Norfolk Islands It can be difficult to distinguish between some Araucaria, but there are key characteristics to look for: some species are darker than others; some leaves grow throughout the branch while other species grow leaves only at the end of branches; shape/curve and direction of leaf growth can vary, and flower size varies a bit too; trunk shedding varies, and the fruit (cone)have noticeable differences in different species. The tree was introduced to European recognition by Captain James Cook who took note of the tree when he landed on the island during his voyages to the South Pacific. Norfolk Island is a neighbouring island to Australia, and the tree is a beloved national symbol of the island. Habit/Form: One of my favourite Genus of trees (although I love them all). This species can give you a classic pine tree shape but doesn't always stay completely uniform/symmetrical. It is in a pyramidal/triangular form so it starts broad and becomes narrow at the top. Generally a slow grower that can reach heights of 60m. In city environments expect this tree to live around 100 years (Keep in mind that the average lifespan of most city trees is decreasing). Main branches will radiate from the trunk rotate and can have a noticeable spacing between each other (so they are not really ...

Plant ID: Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii)
Plant ID: Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) Genus: Araucaria Species: bidwillii Family: ARAUCARIACEAE Common name: Bunya pine, Bunya-Bunya Plant type: Evergreen conifer Origin: Bunya mountains, north of Brisbane, Queensland, and Port Douglas For anyone who enjoys the Araucaria style and form, I thought it would be informative to recognize one of the more unique species of the genus. Habit/Form: A superb species, well equipped and fierce for an Araucaria or ARAUCARIACEAE family. Creates an intimidating immediate area around itself full of sharp old foliage and branches that have fallen to the ground, bark peelings, and oversized and weighted cones that can easily cause serious injury or death if they fall on someone. In cultivation this tree will range between 20-30m x 10-15m but can reach up to 50m in its more natural habitat (most notable in rainforests). Grows into a tall straight upright trunk, a significant rotate or whorl of branches, can be like long branch spines protruding up the trunk and also notable circular old branch scars. Starts a conical shape growing into a medium dome, can have a symmetrical dome-shape (notable top canopy), can also develop quite dense and open when older, branches can arch/extend outward so that you can be engulfed standing inside/under its canopy. The Bunya Pine bark is rough, kind of sharp, scaly, grainy-dotted, ridged, peels off in thin layers, coloured brown/light brown, brown-ash, with black markings. Some Bunya trunks (some older ...
