PHI 501 - Wisdom of Classical Philosophy - Pierre Grimes: University of Philosophical Research
Website: www.uprs.edu This course surveys the origins and outcomes of the early thinkers who have come to be associated with the very core and foundations of Classical Philosophy. It begins with a study of the Pre-Socratic thinkers and traces the evolution of the concepts of consciousness as developed by some of the world's greatest philosophers. Through a study of Pre-Socratic philosophers we glimpse into the origins and early development of philosophy, which later led to a system of thought developed by Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus and Proclus. These ageless insights into the nature of man and the world are profound as well as lastingly beautiful. Pre-Socratics Session 1 The Beginning Thales, Anaximander & Anaximenes as Understood by Aristotle and Aetius Session 2 The Wisdom of Heraclitus and Empedocles Explained Session 3 The Eleatics: Parmenides, Zeno and Melissus Revisited Plato's Philosophy Session 4 The Apology: The Divine Mission of Socrates Session 5 The Phaedo: The Separation of the Soul as the Condition for Wisdom Session 6 The Central Idea of Hellenic Thought: Plato's Ion and the First Book of Plato's Republic Session 7 The Symposium: The Steps Leading to the Vision of Reality Session 8 Plato's Timaeus Neo-Platonics Session 9 Plotinus: An Exploration of Philosophy as Mysticism and Beauty Session 10 Proclus: The First Systematic Philosophy and Pseudo-Dionysius Pierre Grimes, Ph.D. -- Comparative Philosophy, University of the Pacific, California. Ancient Philosophy of Mathematics 01 - Pythagoras and Plato
This video series will examine the ancient mathematical philosophy of Pythagoras and Plato. The focus will be on metaphysics and ontology, symbolism and contemplation, and anagogue, or spiritual ascent. This first video in the series will outline the distinction between Pythagorean and Platonic approaches to mathematical philosophy. The Pythagorean approach focused on symbolism and instituted the "quadrivium", the 4-fold breakdown of all mathematics into arithmetic, harmonics, geometry, and astronomy. The Platonic approach focused on the ontological status of mathematical objects, and grounding mathematics into a metaphysical hierarchy.

Hymn to the Muses
Proclus Diadochus (8 Feb. 412-17 Apr. 485) What is not in us is not on the level of our knowledge; what is not on the level of our knowledge is unknowable by our faculty of knowledge; so then the transcendent Forms are unknowable by our faculty of knowledge. They may, then, be contemplated only by divine Nous. This is so for all Forms, but especially for those that are beyond the noeric gods; for neither sense-perception, nor cognition based on opinion, nor pure reason, nor noeric cognition of our type serves to connect the soul with those Forms, but only illumination from the noeric gods renders us capable of joining ourselves to those noetic-and-noeric Forms, as I recall someone saying under divine inspiration. The nature of those Forms is, then, unknowable to us, as being superior to our intellection and to the partial conceptions of our souls. And it is for this reason, indeed, that the Socrates of the Phaedrus, as we said before, compares the contemplation of them to mystic rites and initiations and visions, ... "7 Ages of Man" from "As You Like It" (Nicholas Pennell)
Shakespeare's "7 Ages of Man" speech by the melancholy Jaques from the play "As You Like It". Jacques' famous lines about the Seven Ages Of Man which begin, "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players," is performed here by Nicholas Pennell from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Ontario (1983 TV), filmed before a live audience. this clip begins with Orlando's line "Then but forbear your food a little while," (Act II, scene 7, line 125 of The Arden Edition) Andrew Gillies ... Orlando Mervyn Blake ... Adam William Needles ... Duke Senior Nicholas Pennell ... Jaques John Novak ... Amiens Commentary By Henry Norman Hudson: Such a division of human life into certain stages or epochs as Jaques makes, II, vii, 142-165, is found in Greek, Latin, and later Hebrew literature. In some Greek verses attributed to Solon, the life of man is divided into ten ages of seven years each. Proclus is said to have made the distribution into seven ages, "over each of which one of the seven planets was supposed to rule. . . . Hippocrates likewise divided the life of man into seven ages, but differs from Proclus in the number of years allotted to each period."-— Malone. Fourteen periods are given in the Mishna, the body of the 'Oral Law' of the Jews redacted in the third century; and in the Midrash, the Hebrew exposition of the Old Testament made between the sixth and twelfth centuries, the division is into seven periods. A poem upon the ten stages of life was written ...
