By 1955, the first headquarters dojo had been built at Yotsuya in Tokyo, and the first JKA Chairman had been appointed Saigo Kichinosuke, member of the upper house of the Japanese Diet and grandson of Saigo Takamori, one of the greatest heroes of Meiji Japan. In 1956, the JKA set up the first-ever karate specialist instructor intern (kenshusei) training program at the headquarters dojo, and accepted its first round of trainees. This was the start of the finest karate instructor training program ever created, a program never matched or even approached by any other karate organisation. It is through this program that the JKA has built up its unique cadre of distinguished karate instructors, all full-time salaried professionals, whose numbers are consistently maintained at roughly twenty individuals. On April 10, 1957, the JKA became a legal entity when Japans Ministry of Education (now Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, and Culture) officially recognized the JKA as an association of members for the promotion of karate and the spread and enrichment of actual karate practice ...

Australian Federal Election 1990 Campaign Ad Megamix
An assortment of election ephemera from the Australian federal election that took place on the 24th of March, 1990, featuring campaign advertisements from both the incumbent Labor Party (fronted by prime minister Bob Hawke) and the Liberal/National Party coalition (with Andrew Peacock as opposition leader) as well as 'how-to-vote' spots from the Australian Electoral Commission. Synopsis: 1. AEC - Informal voting, that wonderful, democratic right that allows us to write whatever the bleeding heck we want on our ballot papers, even if we are required, by law, to participate in the electoral process. Of course, if you actually want to vote correctly, stay tuned for segments #5 and #9! 2. Labor - "Children are our future" (feeling sick already? And yes, I'm sure I was on Bob Hawke's mind when he released that campaign...) 3. Liberal - "There are que-e-estions, that just have to be aa-answered..." (even worse than Labor's song!). Andrew Peacock unleashing his tough love on "dole bludgers". 4. Labor - "Australia's Future" - Bob Hawke investing in Australia's technology and research sectors. 5. AEC - How to vote for the House of Representatives. 6. Liberal - Shadow Treasurer Dr. John Hewson says "No special deals on handouts". 7. Labor - Well, it was a given that the Democrats and Greens would hold the balance of power in the upper house. But what about the lower house? Which party should Democrat/Green/etc. supporters have voted for there? 8. Liberal - John Howard, with his ...

101 East - Okinawa: The future of US military bases
Almost 50000 US military personnel are stationed in Japan, more than half on the island of Okinawa. But their presence has often been controversial. The Okinawa base is vital to the US in protecting its interests in Asia. But it is also important to Yukio Hatoyama, Japan's prime minister, whose popularity is plummeting in the polls and who badly needs to win a majority in the parliament's upper house elections in July.

Shoji screen paper repair and replacement Its time to replace the shoji screens down stairs. It was trial and error and a lot of patients. If you take your time you can replace your screens cheaply and still do a great job. Its cool you can get all kinds of prints here and I went with a light bamboo pattern. Of course having a shoji master do it is better but since they get wrecked after a few years I wanted to save money and learn how myself. The master will do a great job and they turn out tight like a drum head but mine came out great and after the first two I got the rest done really fast as the learning curve progressed. I had a few minor wrinkles and they do not come out as tight as a glue job by a master but it looks great! It cost me 4000 yen including the plastic slide rail tape for all the screens total including one mistake. One roll usually does two full size doors. The iron on paper I used is more resistant to stains and dirt due to the fact it has synthetic material in it and it comes of with a heated iron later with far less clean up, however there are may types of iron paper and glue on papers available. I did six units for that price, two window panels and four doors. It took me half the day but next time its only going to take a few hours. Cleaning the glue off was the hardest part but that also went faster as I developed my own technique. The iron on type that I used is a fairly recent development in the shoji world. At least that's what Japanese people ...

It is initiated by quickly rotating the upper body. The round house kick, like the front kick, can be divided into three stages. These are the initial rotation of the shoulders and then the tuck of the knee, extension of the leg and recovering. Attacking the face with a round house kick demands a high degree of strength and flexibility. The three stages of the round house kick can best be practiced using a partner for support. It is recommended that some form of support be utilized until the basic form of the kick is acquired. The fundamental motion of front and round are mechanically similar and once the basic execution has been mastered, a number of variations of the angle of an attack can naturally be made depending on the demands of the technical or fighting situation.
