Jesse David Leach (b. July 3, 1978) is an American musician from Providence, Rhode Island, and is best known as being the current lead vocalist of Killswitch Engage and also for being the vocalist for the blues rock band Seemless. He is also the current singer for the hardcore metal band The Empire Shall Fall and Times of Grace. In February 2012 he rejoined Killswitch Engage following the departure of vocalist Howard Jones in January 2012.

Leach's first band, Corrin, was formed in the early 1990s. Corrin recorded four songs in 1996 which were eventually released as a CD by Propaganda Machine in 1998 after the band's breakup.

Leach's second band, Nothing Stays Gold, formed in the mid-90s. They put out a single ep before splitting in 97/98.

Meanwhile, some remaining members of Overcast and Aftershock were forming a new band in the Massachusetts area and were seeking a vocalist. In 1999, Leach joined bassist Mike D'Antonio, guitarist Joel Stroetzel, and drummer Adam Dutkiewicz to form Killswitch Engage. Their self-titled debut was released on July 11, 2000.

Killswitch Engage's next effort, Alive or Just Breathing, was released on May 21, 2002, putting Killswitch Engage at the forefront of the metalcore scene. Two weeks prior to going on tour, however, Leach married his fiancee. When he was not contacting his wife, Leach would sit alone in the tour bus for hours after shows and simply wait for the remaining band members to return. Leach's passion for his music combined with his emotional struggles of the time made him unable to exercise control over his screaming. He would blow his voice out after a few shows and struggled with the rest of the tour. Leach also began suffering from a mild depression which grew worse as the tour continued. According to Mike D'Antonio in an interview for Killswitch's "(Set This) World Ablaze" DVD, "It seemed like there was always this dark cloud over Jesse's head." His depression led him to resign from the band & drop out of the public eye for some time. Leach wrote an email to the band explaining why he left. Quoting Leach from his interview in the DVD, "I didn't have the mental energy to face them, or even call them on the phone rather. I was at a point in my life where I just didn't want to face any of them so I wrote them a long email explaining, like, I'm just done. Explaining what every song meant to me, explaining what the whole experience was to me, and I said 'Bye. Ya know? You're not going to be able to find me, I'm going on my honeymoon finally. And, uh, don't try and call me don't try and contact me, I'm done. Done with music, period.'"

Leach reconciled with his former bandmates at the Roadrunner United 25th anniversary concert, performing a duet with then singer Howard Jones. The entire band played on stage, minus Adam D, who had been out with an injury (and was replaced by Andreas Kisser of Sepultura, with both Howard and Jesse singing "My Last Serenade". The song ended with the two embracing, and Leach thanking the crowd for their support through his difficult times.)

In 2003 Jesse joined a blues rock band called Seemless. Seemless toured the US many times with bands like Fu-Manchu, The Sword, Trivium, and In Flames. Seemless is known for explosive, emotive live shows and showcases Leach's new-found soulful blues-y vocals. Touring with Seemless also showed the music world Jesse was back and able to complete tours. Seemless has released two albums so far and has had multiple videos featured on MTV's Headbangers ball. In 2006 their video for the single "Cast No Shadow" made MTV's Top Ten new videos. Seemless is currently writing new songs and playing out occasionally. Due to drummer Derek Kerswill's involvement with the MA metal band Unearth, among other projects, Seemless has taken a hiatus from the touring life.

In 2008, Jesse Leach formed the band, The Empire Shall Fall, with friends in his area. The band have now released their first independent album "Awaken" which was released on November 17, 2009.

Also, he worked on another album with Killswitch Engage bandmate, Adam Dutkiewicz. Leach has stated that the working title for the project with Adam D. is Times of Grace. Dutkiewicz also takes lead vocals on several tracks, and was released on January 18, 2011. The album's first single, "Strength in Numbers", was released October 15 via Roadrunner Records as a free digital download for 72 hours for those who signed up for the band's mailing list. The song is now available for purchase on iTunes. The album was made with the support of Killswitch Engage.

On February 6, 2012, Killswitch Engage uploaded a photo of Leach and the rest of the band to the website, indicating Leach's return to Killswitch Engage.^[1]

Adam Jonathan Dutkiewicz (born April 4, 1977^[1]) is an American musician, recording engineer and music producer, best known as a guitarist and backup vocalist from Massachusetts metalcore band Killswitch Engage.

Biography[link]

Dutkiewicz, who is of Polish descent, grew up in Westhampton, Massachusetts. Dutkiewicz attended Hampshire Regional High School. Dutkiewicz also later attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying production, audio engineering, and bass guitar.^[2][3] While at college, he began playing in the band Aftershock with friend Joel Stroetzel. Stroetzel would later join Dutkiewicz, Mike D'Antonio, and Jesse Leach in forming Killswitch Engage. Dutkiewicz was the drummer of Killswitch Engage, until the release of its second album, Alive or Just Breathing,^[4] when he moved to guitars, and Tom Gomes became the band's drummer.

Dutkiewicz tracked guitars for A Song for Chi on June 24, 2009, in San Sebastian, Spain.

He has assumed the role of producer on all of Killswitch Engage's records,^[4] except on their second self-titled album Killswitch Engage, which was released June 30, 2009. For this album he took on the job of co-producer alongside Brendan O'Brien (known for his work with AC/DC, The Offspring, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Incubus, Mastodon, and Stone Temple Pilots). Adam has also produced for the bands As I Lay Dying, Underøath, The Devil Wears Prada,^[5] The Acacia Strain,^[6] Unearth,^[7] All That Remains,^[8] From Autumn to Ashes,^[4] Johnny Truant,^[9] Parkway Drive,^[10] The Agony Scene,^[4] Every Time I Die^[4] and others. He has been compared to Ross Robinson, producer of many nu metal albums, because of his influence on modern metal and shaping the sound of melodic metalcore. He is also an engineer for Zing Recording Studios, which has produced for numerous artists, including several from Tooth & Nail Records and its heavy metal sub-label Solid State Records.^[3]

Guitars[link]

Dutkiewicz has been a long time player of Caparison Guitars mostly using the Caparison PLM-3, a discontinued model, with EMG pickups (EMG 85 in the bridge, and two EMG SA single coils in the middle and neck positions) and DR Tite-Fit .012-.052 strings. He is quoted as saying that he likes the guitars because they have a very "strat-like neck."

In 2008 shows, he used a black Parker Fly with an EMG 81/EMG 85 set for pickups. Atop this, he used a custom Caparison, modeled after the Dellinger model. He previously used Parker guitars for their light weight so as to avoid worsening his back problems, but he has recently been seen using PRS Guitars a Custom 22 usually with Killswitch Engage and Times of Grace.

When he officially took up second guitar duties after the release of Alive or Just Breathing, he could be seen using a Fender Stratocaster, possibly modded with a stacked bridge humbucker.

Amplification and effects[link]

UPDATE for 2012: He has signed with Laney and is now using the new Laney Ironheart series of amplifiers.

Throughout his career, Dutkiewicz has used a range of different amplifiers including Hughes and Kettner TriAmp MK II, Vox AC30's, Peavey 5150's and Mesa/Boogie Triple-Rectifiers and Roadsters, with Mesa/Boogie and Hughes and Kettner 4x12 Cabinets, loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s.

For recording "Killswitch Engage" (2009), he used a Diezel VH4. He also used a Splawn Nitro, an Orange Tiny Terror, and many other amps for the distorted overdubs.

Dutkiewicz is currently using Splawn Nitro with KT88 tubes with Mesa/Boogie traditional straight cabinets, his Maxon OD-808, Audio Technica 5200 Wireless System, and a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor. His former rig was featured in the Guitar World, Vulgar Display of Power column [1].

For effect pedals, he has been known to use Maxon AD-9 Pro Delay and Maxon OD-808 Overdrive units, and he and fellow guitarist Stroetzel have also both been credited with helping develop the Maxon OD-9 Pro+ Overdrive pedal. He runs the delay pedal in the loop of his amplifiers, while he runs an overdrive pedal in the loop of a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor.

The rig for his side project appears to consist of a Framus Cobra and possibly a similar effect pedal setup to his Killswitch Engage rig.

Stage show[link]

Adam D is an energetic stage personality during Killswitch Engage's live shows. One of the most active band members, he is well known for his trademark of wearing eccentric or odd clothing (such as a cape and Short Shorts in the World Ablaze DVD, the pirate hat he wore during a performance on The Jimmy Kimmel Show, or even a Katy Perry T-shirt). Due to this stage presence, he is commonly referred to as the "Jim Carrey of guitar players."
