How To Grow Mushrooms At Home: Pasteurizing Coir
tinyurl.com - Grow Your Own mushrooms, step by step instructions! This video is a slideshow of the process of preparing coca coir, vermiculite and spent coffee grounds into a pasteurized mix that can be used for bulking your grain mycelium spawn out into a larger container (like the kitty litter bin in a previous video) for a higher yield of mushrooms. This is an Intermediate level mushroom growing strategy. If you are brand new to growing mushrooms at home, consider the PF Tek/BRF cake strategy videos before jumping straight to bulk. Some growers decide to use Garden Gypsum instead of the spent coffee grounds, because coffee grounds are more prone to contamination than Garden Gypsum is. Coconut Coir
Coconut Coir
The versatile coconut has been providing us with much more than the odd Piña Colada for centuries. Traditionally, coconut coir -- the outer fibrous husk -- has been the backbone of "Welcome" doormats, brushes and sofa stuffing for well over 100 years but, as far as growing medium is concerned, coconut coir started to make a name for itself during the late '80s and early '90s as a substitute for peat, a non-renewable resource. Once disregarded as a waste product, today it is recognized as a valuable, eco-friendly by-product of a by-product and addition to our growing medium. So what is it about coconut coir that makes it such a popular replacement for peat here at Costa Farms? Well, coconut coir has an outstanding water holding capacity, with it absorbing eight times its own weight in water. The coconut husks act as mini-sponges, retaining water for long periods of time while releasing nutrients and water in ideal increments for a more vigorous plant growth.
