Indonesian Batik
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The techniques, symbolism and culture surrounding hand-dyed cotton and silk garments known as Indonesian Batik permeate the lives of Indonesians from beginning to end: infants are carried in batik slings decorated with symbols designed to bring the child luck, and the dead are shrouded in funerary batik. Clothes with everyday designs are worn regularly in business and academic settings, while special varieties are incorporated into celebrations of marriage and pregnancy and into puppet theatre and other art forms. The garments even play the central role in certain rituals, such as the ceremonial casting of royal batik into a volcano. Batik is dyed by proud craftspeople who draw designs on fabric using dots and lines of hot wax, which resists vegetable and other dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water and repeating if multiple colours are desired. The wide diversity of patterns reflects a variety of influences, ranging from Arabic calligraphy, European bouquets and Chinese phoenixes to Japanese cherry blossoms and Indian or Persian peacocks. Often handed down within families for generations, the craft of batik is intertwined with the cultural identity of the Indonesian people and, through the symbolic meanings of its colours and designs, expresses their creativity and ...

Intel Visibly Smart - Batik Fractal
In this Visibly Smart film, contemporary Indonesia is revealed through the eyes of batik fabric and clothing designer, Nancy Margried. Batik is a fabric dyeing and printing method dating back as far as the 6th century and remains a treasured cultural symbol of Indonesia. UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Nancy's Bandung-based design atelier, Batik Fractal, is reinventing batik design with 3D modeling software her team created while maintaining much of the traditional production process. The film illustrates how everyday people can realize their creative ambitions while remaining true to their culture through the use of technology.

Wax / Batik Technique: Silk Painting with Jill Kennedy
DVD Title: Silk Painting with Jill Kennedy Jill Kennedy is the famous UK author of several books on her favorite art -- silk painting. In this DVD she demonstrates 10 of her most called upon techniques for creating fantastic designs in silk. In this excerpt she demonstrates how wax often is preferential to gutta or other resists for it's ability to contain or hold colors and be used in larger areas while providing similar effects to gutta's ability to contain dye within regions. Here she emphasizes the ability to work with dyes immediately after application and demonstrates how fun it is to use traditional Indonesian tjantings and Japanese brushes to create "Pisces" or the "twin fish" design in the scarf she is working on.

Indonesian Craftsman Turn Wood into Batik Handicrafts
ANCHOR: Batik textiles have long been known as one of Indonesia's traditional handicrafts. Now the craftsman turn wood into batik handicrafts. Let's take a look. STORY: The craftsman in the Krebet village turn wooden boards into masks, puppets, statues and other products, which are now painted with traditional batik designs and patterns. These products are sold across the archipelago of 17000 islands. But the bulk of it is exported to the United States and other countries. Men do the hard job of sawing and cutting the wooden boards sourced from the jungles around Yogyakarta. They are carved into delicate masks and statues, which are sanded down to a perfect smooth finish. Female artisans then take over for the final artistic touch. They paint the wooden products with batik designs by applying trace wax and dyes --- just as it is done on cloth. The products are then sealed with a special finish to ensure the colours do not fade. Most of the artisans are accustomed to such delicate work, as they are used to create a range of leather products before that market started shrinking. [Putut Supriyadi, Wooden Batik Handicrafts Gallery Owner]: "We were first producing leather goods but the sales were not good. So we decide to make wooden batik products and this product has garnered a good market." He says the products have increased the economic activity in the village due to good demand. Putut adds that the capacity is enough to make 3000 wooden batik pieces a month and that ...

Free Batik Art Lessons for Indonesian Children
CHAN: A local artist in one Indonesian city is providing free batik classes. He hopes to help ease the trauma children are suffering following the 2006 earthquake. STORY: It may take years to recover from trauma for the children here after being devastated by a powerful earthquake in May of 2006. But the people in Yogyakarta are resilient including batik artist Nur Ahmadi. He's providing relief and recovery program by giving free batik classes for children still living with the trauma. Nur is being joined by a few other local artists provide the lessons at his house. Children spend the morning creating their batik masterpieces with hot wax and paint. [Nur Ahmadi, Artist]: "In the beginning we gathered the children to lessen their trauma from the earthquake. Then we got an idea to give free batik classes for those children. So, with this class we could preserve batik tradition and ease the children's trauma from earthquake." During the class, the children explore the techniques of dyeing and creating texture using textile painting. Ahmadi says the class is one way to preserve the ancient tradition of making batik. "I would like to see my batik creation displayed on the exhibition and make money out of it." The number of participants in his class is increasing. Ahmadi plans to open a proper course of batik making for the public, but for these people it will still be free. Over the years, batik has become more of a ceremonial dress, worn only on special occasions such as ...
