Edgar John Bergen (February 16, 1903 – September 30, 1978) was an American actor, comedian and radio performer, best known for his proficiency in ventriloquism and his characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. He is also the father of actress Candice Bergen. He died on September 30, 1978, in Las Vegas, Nevada due to kidney disease.
Charlie may refer to:
Bergen (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈbærɡən] ( listen)) is a city and municipality in Hordaland on the west coast of Norway. As of the end of Q3 2015, the municipality had a population of 277,378, and the urban population was 250,420 as of 1 January 2015, making Bergen the second-largest city in Norway. The municipality covers an area of 465 square kilometres (180 sq mi) and is located on the peninsula of Bergenshalvøyen. The city centre and northern neighbourhoods are located on Byfjorden, "the city fjord", and the city is surrounded by mountains; Bergen is known as the city of seven mountains. Many of the extra-municipal suburbs are located on islands. Bergen is the administrative centre of Hordaland and consists of eight boroughs—Arna, Bergenhus, Fana, Fyllingsdalen, Laksevåg, Ytrebygda, Årstad and Åsane.
Trading in Bergen may have started as early as the 1020s. According to tradition the city was founded in 1070 by king Olav Kyrre; its name was Bjørgvin, "the green meadow among the mountains". It served as Norway's capital in the 13th century, and from the end of the 13th century became a bureau city of the Hanseatic League. Until 1789, Bergen enjoyed exclusive rights to mediate trade between Northern Norway and abroad and it was the largest city in Norway until surpassed by the capital city, Oslo, in the 1830s. The remains of the quays, Bryggen, is a World Heritage Site. The city was hit by numerous fires. The "Bergen School of Meteorology" was developed at the Geophysical Institute beginning in 1917, the Norwegian School of Economics was founded in 1936, and the University of Bergen in 1946. From 1831 to 1972, Bergen was its own county. In 1972 the municipality absorbed four surrounding municipalities, and at the same time became a part of Hordaland county.
Edgar is a commonly used English given name, from an Anglo-Saxon name Eadgar (composed of ead "rich, prosperous" and gar "spear").
Like most Anglo-Saxon names, it fell out of use by the later medieval period; it was, however, revived in the 18th century, and was popularised by its use for a character in Sir Walter Scott's The Bride of Lammermoor (1819).

I happened to cross paths with this talented and interesting fella about two years ago…he was opening a show in Philly with one of our favorites (Adrien Reju: check for her On the Hill Session from a little while back). His gently self-deprecating stage banter kept the audience laughing, and his songs let us know that he is for real. Thom and I chatted briefly after that show, and occasionally in the interim betwixt then and when we hosted him at our place…then, as now, as always, he is thoughtful, funny, and wicked smaht. Enjoy Mr. Thom McCarthy's music, and if you have a chance to meet him personally, take it. Check out Thom's session at: http://kettlepottracks.com/?p=4998

Edgar Bergen, famed radio comedian and ventriloquist and creator of Charlie McCarthy interviewed on The Tommy Banks Show for CBC television in Canada, circa 1972. This interview was conducted in front of a live audience. Bergen talks about ventriloquism and does a short routine with Ophelia, Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. I recorded this myself with a tape recorder next to the TV set way back in the day - hence the average audio quality. Tommy Banks had an interview show in Canada back in the 1970s. I know it's not as good as video...but it's still great to hear Bergen in front of a live crowd - he really shines in those situations. It's also of some interest that he is using parts of routines from the 40's, and still making them work very well in the 70's. I have also never hea...

For fans of Edgar Bergen, here is a great find - This the best interview with Bergen I have heard, with the possible exception of his appearance on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show in 1975. In this half hour, Bergen discusses at length many aspects of his career and his life away from the stage. We learn about his early years, his radio days with W.C. Fields, some of his charitable work, and his hobbies which include flying airplanes and collecting steam cars. This interview was conducted by the well known broadcaster Larry Solway for CBC Television circa 1974. It was only broadcast in Canada. I recorded this myself back in the 70's with a tape recorder next to the TV set, and it sat in a drawer for years. I only recently rediscovered it and was surprised at what a great interview it is.
