Goodbye Columbia Square
On April 20th, 2007 the last broadcast of CBS2 news aired from the Columbia Square facility in Hollywood Ca. After 69 years this building has given way to a brand new broadcast center at the CBS studios in Studio City. There, it will broadcast the local KCBS/KCAL news shows. A couple of years ago KNX newsradio ended its long tenancy to move to new digs on Wilshire Bl. For some of my colleagues and I, it was our home away from home, where we worked and in essence, grew up and flourished as journalists. Just about every major news personality around the country has worked at Columbia Square at one time or another. It's been 28 years for me. Since the KNXT days. You can't deny the rich history of the place as celebs and stars of radio, television and music passed through it doors since the late 30's. This video is a reminder of it's distinct character and its service to those who will always have fond memories of the "Square". Enjoy and remember.

Mid-Century Neon Signs
Spend some time on the Sunset Strip in 1955 at nightclubs like the Mocambo and Ciro's before motoring north to the "Biggest Little City in the World". The coda provides a view of the Griffith Observatory three months before the release of "Rebel Without a Cause". As a point of reference, the film opens on the corner of Sunset and Argyle, looking east down Sunset Boulevard. The Hollywood Palladium is shown on the far left with its marquee partially obscured by a palm tree. CBS Columbia Square, prominently displayed in the center of the frame, once broadcast Jack Benny radio programs and later held recording sessions for hits like Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds. The shots of neon signs on Sunset Boulevard begin near present-day Sunset Plaza and proceed east to the Hollywood Freeway. The location and fate of the various businesses are as follows: Mocambo -- 8588 Sunset Boulevard (closed in 1958 and later demolished). Ciro's -- 8433 Sunset Boulevard (now The Comedy Store). Sunset Palms Motel -- 7160 Sunset Boulevard (extant). Café de Paris Restaurant -- 7038 Sunset Boulevard (closed). Gourmet Hollywood Restaurant -- 6530 Sunset Boulevard (closed). Frank Sennes Moulin Rouge -- 6230 Sunset Boulevard (now Nickelodeon studios). CBS Columbia Square -- 6121 Sunset Boulevard (extant). KTTV Studios (Metromedia Square) -- 5746 Sunset Boulevard (demolished in 2003). Latin Quarter Restaurant -- 5521 Sunset Boulevard (demolished). With the exception of The Nugget, all of the casinos ...

Full October Country Movie Part 1
This is a short film shot in 1967 when the band October Country was seeking a record deal. We were approached by Denis Hoffman who later that year backed Steven Spielberg in his 1st film called "Amblin" and asked if he could follow us around and film footage of us going to and from gigs. The life of a cover band who eventually got originals given to us by Michael Lloyd. We were working pretty steadly at that time. We worked with The Drifters, The Coasters, The Standells, The Sons of Champlin (Bill Champlin's band. And after we got signed, The Buffalo Spingfield, The Iron Butterfly, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Linda Rondstat, The Turtles (great bunch of guys), Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, The YoungBloods, The Boxtops, and a whole bunch of other folks. We DID get signed because of this film. It was shown to Len Levy, then President of Epic Records/New York. Epic Records was then part of CBS Records so we recorded the album "October Country" at CBS Records, Columbia Square at Sunset and Gower in Hollywood, California. About the same time we asked to perform the music for Steven Spielberg's "Amblin". Caryle, our female lead singer sang it.

Let's Join Joanie: Failed TV Pilot Show Episode - Joan Davis (1950)
DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Let's Join Joanie is an unaired TV pilot produced in 1950 at CBS Columbia Square in Hollywood as a proposed live weekly (or bi-weekly) series, based on their radio show Leave It To Joan. Today, it is best remembered for its star, Joan Davis, who would later star in the popular 1952--1955 sitcom I Married Joan. Joan Davis (June 29, 1907 -- May 22, 1961) was an American comedic actress whose career spanned vaudeville, film, radio and television. Remembered best for the 1952--55 television comedy, I Married Joan, Davis had a successful earlier career as a B-movie actress and a leading star of 1940s radio comedy. Born as Madonna Josephine Davis in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Davis was a performer since childhood. She appeared with her husband Si Wills in vaudeville. Her first film was a short subject for Educational Pictures called Way Up Thar (1935), featuring a then-unknown Roy Rogers. Educational's distribution company, Twentieth Century-Fox, signed Davis for feature films. Tall and lanky, with a comically flat speaking voice, she became known as one of the few female physical clowns of her time. Perhaps best known for her co-starring turn with Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in Hold That Ghost (1941), she had a reputation for flawless physical comedy. Her pantomime sequence in Beautiful but Broke (1944) was a slapstick construction-site episode. She co-starred with Eddie Cantor in two features, Show Business (1944) and If You Knew Susie (1948 ...

Hollywood Barn Dance (KNX, 1943 -- 1948) Foy Willing (Texas Blues)
Radio programs with a barn dance format offered patrons some comedy and square dance music. They also helped to prepare the nation for country music's coming of age during the 1940s. During the popularity of early hillbilly stars and Hollywood's production of singing cowboy movies, radio station KNX in Los Angeles premiered its own kind of weekly barn dance music show, the Hollywood Barn Dance. What eventually became KNX started as a 5-watt amateur radio station, with the call sign of 6ADZ. The station was built and operated in a back bedroom of his Hollywood home by Fred Christian. On Sep. 20, 1920 Christian began broadcasting records he had borrowed from music stores, in return for plugs on the air. It is not known how often Christian provided such broadcasts at 200 meters/1500 kilohertz and he had to leave the air quite often so other amateur radio operators could take their turns at their common hobby. Christian soon grew tired of broadcasting only recorded music. He moved KGC to the top of the California Theatre Building in downtown Los Angeles. His plans were to broadcast live music from the theater. KGC took up the new call sign of KNX when it moved on 1 May 1922. Christian built a new 50-watt transmitter to send its signal to more listeners. The station was briefly off the air a year later while a new 100 watt transmitter was installed. The station was also known as the California Theatre Radiophone between 1922 and 1924. KNX was sold to the Columbia Broadcasting ...

Neil Diamond "Crunchy Granola Suite" Live at New York 2008
Hot August Night/NYC is a DVD release from Neil Diamond released on August 14, 2009. The DVD features songs from Diamond's four shows at Madison Square Garden during his 2008 tour. An accompanying 2-CD album was released at the same time.[1] An edited, hour-long special featuring songs from this DVD was shown on CBS on the night of the disc's release. The special was watched by 13 million viewers. This is the third in a series of similarly titled live albums; it was preceded by 1972's Hot August Night and 1987's Hot August Night II. In August 2008, Neil Diamond allowed cameras to record his entire four-night run at New York's Madison Square Garden and released it in the United States on August 14, 2009, on DVD, one year to the day of the first concert. 'Hot August Night/NYC' debuted at No. 2 on the charts and is exclusively available at Wal-Mart and has sold out at many locations all over the country. Also on the same day the DVD was released, CBS (the former parent of his label, Columbia Records) aired an edited version of the DVD, which won the ratings hour with 13 million viewers. The next day, the sales of the DVD surged and prompted Sony to order more copies to meet the high demand. Source: Wiki
