Tony Conigliaro is tragedy hit by the Angels' Jack Hamilton
Read More on This Day in Baseball - www.thebaseballpage.com August 18th, 1967 During the Red Sox "Impossible dream" season, tragedy strikes when Tony Conigliaro is beaned by the Angels' Jack Hamilton. Hit just below his left eye, Conigliaro would miss the rest of the season and all of '68. The injury effectively ended the career of a player who by the time he was 22 had become the youngest in American League history and second-youngest player in major-league history to hit 100 career homers. August 18th 1995, in a 9-2 Toronto win, Baltimore shortstop Cal Ripken plays in his 1208th consecutive game passing Steve Garvey for the 3rd longest streak in major league history. August 18th, 1995, after 39 years at the mike, Yankees announcer and Hal of Famer, Phil Rizzuto retires as team broadcaster. The "Scooter's" retirement was prompted by a dispute with WPIX-TV who refused to allow him to miss a game to attend the funeral of teammate Mickey Mantle. The voice of the Yankees would eventually return for the 1996 season. Taking full control of the game, Milwaukee pitcher Lew Burdette pitches a 1-0 no-hitter against the Phillies facing just 27 batters and scoring the game's only run. On August 18th,1906, Wee Willie Keeler strikes out for only the second time this season, falling both times to White Sox pitcher Ed Walsh's illegal spitball. In 1902, the first unassisted triple play ever in a professional game is executed by first baseman Hal O'Hagan of the Rochester Bronchos (Eastern ...

Broadway, New York City - Video tour of Madison Square, Herald Square, Macy's and Flatiron Building
In this new video tour of New York City from the series "All Along Broadway" (see the first two episodes: "Wall street" ( www.youtube.com ) and "Union Square" ( www.youtube.com ), David Hill from New York Habitat continues his stroll along Broadway and presents Midtown Manhattan and its famous squares: Madison Square, Herald Square and Greeley Square. Broadway is one of the most famous roads in the world. It runs the length of Manhattan, from its southern tip to the northern tip of the island and continues in the Bronx, crossing many of Manhattan's neighborhoods. History The oldest "street" in New York City, Broadway was originally used as a trail by the Native Americans who lived here; later it was used by the Dutch settlers to travel to the northern forests to hunt. Madison Square Walking north along Broadway, you will reach a large intersection at Fifth Avenue and 23rd St. which creates a big square. This is Madison Square, named after the 4th US President, James Madison. It was here in 1842 where some of the first amateur baseball games were ever played. They used a vacant lot in the north part of the square (corner of Madison Avenue & 27th Street). Later, the original New York Knickerbocker Baseball club, one of the first professional baseball teams, started right here. Flatiron or Fuller Building One of the most beautiful buildings in this square is the Fuller Building, designed by Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts architectural style. It was named "Fuller" after the ...

Nico Saquito Maria Cristina
Antonio Fernández, internationally known as Ñico Saquito, was born on January 17, 1902 in Santiago de Cuba. At an early age, he was employed as metal casting worker. When he was 15 years old he learned guitar by himself and began his career as a troubadour. Ñico Saquito´s nickname came from his ability as a baseball player when, during one game, one of his fans commented that Ñico was a great fielder who never missed a ball, so he seemed to have a "small sack" ("saquito") instead of a baseball glove in his hand.

Clarence Howeth "Ginger" Beaumont - Racine County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Video
Inducted October 27, 2011 Beaumont is best remembered for being the first batter in World Series history while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Boston Red Sox in 1903. He faced legendary pitcher Cy Young and flew out. That distinction overshadowed an outstanding Major League career that saw the Rochester native lead the National League in hits in 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1907. He won the NL batting title in 1902, hitting a lofty .357. Beaumont, who also played for Boston and Chicago Cubs, suffered a stroke and died in 1956 at the age of 79.
