Behrouz Naghipour is playing the Setar. What is Setar? The ancestry of the setar can be traced to the ancient tanbour of pre-Islamic Persia. It is made of thin mulberry wood and its fingerboard has twenty-five or twenty-six adjustable gut frets. Setar, in Persian, means "three strings", but a fourth one was added by Moshtaq Ali Shah, a famous Setar player of the 18th century. This "sympathetic" string is flot played but its echo highlights the predominant note of the avâz (a derived part of the modal system of the Persian traditional music) or the Dastgah. Setar is a very "intimate" instrument, its confidential sound being the consequence of the years that it had to be played in secret, when musicians were persecuted. Moshtaq Ali Shah used to play at private musical evenings in restricted, often Sufi gatherings. This great mystic called his instrument "tchoub-e-sagzani" - a stick to beat dogs - as a reaction against the then puritans who wanted to ban music. Mirza Abdollah, the father of the modern Iranian classical music, was also renown for being a magnificent Setar master. Because of its delicacy, Setar is the preferred instrument of Sufi mystics.

Ahmad Ebādi (1906 -- 1992) (Persian: احمد عبادی) was an Iranian musician and setar player. Born in Tehran, he was a member of the most extraordinary family of Iranian music. Ahmad's father, Mirza Abdollah, is arguably the most influential figure in Persian traditional music, and his paternal uncle, Mirza Hossein Gholi, is also well-known for his mastery in playing the tar. Ahmad's paternal grandfather, Ali Akbar Farahani, was also a talented musician. Ahmad started learning music at early age. At the age of seven, he was able to play Tombak to accompany his father. Unfortunately he lost his father soon, but continued his education with his sisters especially Moloud Khanom. He became one of the best setar players of all time. For years he played on Iranian radio especially in a program called Golha, produced by Davood Pirnia. Ebadi had a unique style in playing the setar. He also invented a variety of different tunings for setar. He died in 1992 and is buried in Emamzadeh Taher Cemetery in Karaj.

From the very childhood, he was deeply attached to Iranian music and started learning Santur at the age of thirteen, taught by the lost artist Manijeh Ali-pour. After a while, he turned to learn Setar, monitored by Dariush Talai and has continued playing it ever since. In 1982, he begun learning Tar, taught by Mohammad Reza Lotfi, through whom he became acquainted with the art of Iranian traditional music systems (Radif) and its mysteries. In the meantime, he was honored to be trained by master Bahari and spent a while playing old pieces with him. Great interest in Setar lead him to Hossein Alizadeh, and in fact his artistic promotion is indebted to this valuable master of Iranian music. As to the fact that, in his childhood, he had also been trained by some outstanding masters such as Hormozi and Forutan, managed to become fully familiar and accustomed to Iranian classical music and discovered its delicacies and beauties. Shaari has always tried to reconstruct the works of the pioneer masters of music and this high goal resulted in creation of two albums, "Shabahang" and "Karevan-saba". Persian setar master Daryush Safvat playing the modes Chahargah and Abu Ata in Paris in about 1962. The sound recording was made by Lloyd Miller who recently added photos and video visuals from the 1970s attempting to partly match the video with the sound for this posting. Dr. Safvat is still active in Iran as the main exponent of the correct traditional old modal system which has been passed down over the millenia. In Paris Dr. Safvat taught Persian traditional music at the Centre d'etudes de musique orientale where Mr. Miller studied santur, setar and zarb. In the 1970s, Dr. Safvat was the main force in salvaging traditional Persian music from destruction by westernization.

Setar (Persian: سه تار, from seh, meaning "three" and tār, meaning "string") is a Persian musical instrument. It is a member of the lute family. Two and a half centuries ago, a fourth string was added to the setar, which has 25 - 27 moveable frets which are usually made of animal intestines or silk. It originated in Persia before the spread of Islam.[1]

Alizadeh was born in 1951 in Tehran to Azeri and Persian parents.[3] He graduated from the music conservatory in 1975 and entered the school of fine arts in the University of Tehran where he studied composition and Persian music. He continued his education at the Berlin University of the Arts in composition and musicology. He studied with various masters of Traditional Persian Music such as Houshang Zarif, Ali Akbar Shahnazi, Nur-Ali Borumand, Mahmoud Karimi, Abdollah Davami, Yusef Forutan, and Sa'id Hormozi. From these masters he learned the radif of Persian classical music.
He plays the tar and setar, and has recently derived the sallaneh and shurangiz from the ancient Persian lute barbat.

He has been nominated for the 2007 Grammy Award along with Armenian musician, Djivan Gasparyan, for their collaboration album, The Endless Vision. In 2008, he was voted as "Iran's most distinguished musician of the year".

Kiya Tabassian was born in 1976, in Tehran, Iran, immigrating to Quebec in 1990. He has been trained in Persian music under Reza Ghasemi and Kayhan Kalhor. He studied musical composition at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal with Gilles Tremblay.
In 1998, he co-founded Constantinople[1] a Montreal based ensemble which has earned an international reputation for its unique juxtaposition of early musical sources and the living traditions of the Middle East. Last two years, Kiya has toured intensively Canada, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Holland, France, Cyprus, Lebanon, Greece, Hong Kong and Mexico. He has recorded ten CDs for the ATMA label and has created with Constantinople over 20 original programs performing them at some of the most prestigious festivals and venues such as Festival d'Aix-en-Provence (France), Festival de Musiques Sacrées de Fès (Morocco), Festival d'Ile de France (Paris), Metropolitan Museum (New York), Festival de Mexico en el Centro historico (Mexico) and Vancouver Summer Festival (Canada).
From 2002 to 2005, he was involved in the international MediMuses research project on the history and repertoire of Mediterranean music land in several publishing and recording projects. As a composer, he has been commissioned by UER, CBC, Calefax wind quintette and Nouvel Ensemble Moderne.
He is currently a board member of the Montreal Art Council, and the president of the music section.

Sahba Motallebi (Persian صهبا مطلبی)is an Iranian, musician, songwriter and a tar player and also the author of two books on Persian classical music, namely "Tolou" and "Nyaiesh".

Motallebi was born in 1978 in Tehran, Iran, and started playing traditional Persian music very early on. she is a graduate of Tehran Conservatory where she mastered playing Tar and Setar (traditional Persian instruments) under the instructions of master Fariborz Azizi.[1]
She studied under the master of traditional Persian music, Hossein Alizadeh, and the respected music theoretician, Dr Mehran Rouhani. She continued her formal music studies in composition at St Petersburgh Conservatory, Russia. she also attended the R.G.S University, Turkey, for a comparative study of Persian and Turkish music.
Experience and Achievements[link]
Sahba was awarded and recognized as the best tar player by the Iranian Music Festival for four years in a row, from 1995 to 1998.[2]
In 2000 she joined the Iranian National Orchestra and since then she has been traveling around the world to present Persian music. Sahba has recorded several CDs and composed numerous theatrical pieces.
Currently she is a resident of Southern California where she spends most of her time teaching Tar and Setar to her students.

Ahmad Ebādi [1] (1906–1992)[2] (Persian: احمد عبادی) was an Iranian musician and setar player. Born in Tehran, he was a member of the most extraordinary family of Iranian music. Ahmad's father, Mirza Abdollah, is arguably the most influential figure in Persian traditional music, and his paternal uncle, Mirza Hossein Gholi, is also well-known for his mastery in playing the tar. Ahmad's paternal grandfather, Ali Akbar Farahani, was also a talented musician.
Ahmad started learning music at early age. At the age of seven, he was able to play Tombak to accompany his father. Unfortunately he lost his father soon, but continued his education with his sisters especially Moloud Khanom. He became one of the best setar players of all time. For years he played on Iranian radio especially in a program called Golha, produced by Davood Pirnia. Ebadi had a unique style in playing the setar. He also invented a variety of different tunings for setar.
He died in 1992 and is buried in Emamzadeh Taher Cemetery in Karaj.[3]

From the very childhood, he was deeply attached to Iranian music and started learning Santur at the age of thirteen, taught by the lost artist Manijeh Ali-pour. After a while, he turned to learn Setar, monitored by Dariush Talai and has continued playing it ever since. In 1982, he begun learning Tar, taught by Mohammad Reza Lotfi, through whom he became acquainted with the art of Iranian traditional music systems (Radif) and its mysteries. In the meantime, he was honored to be trained by master Bahari and spent a while playing old pieces with him. Great interest in Setar lead him to Hossein Alizadeh, and in fact his artistic promotion is indebted to this valuable master of Iranian music. As to the fact that, in his childhood, he had also been trained by some outstanding masters such as Hormozi and Forutan, managed to become fully familiar and accustomed to Iranian classical music and discovered its delicacies and beauties. Shaari has always tried to reconstruct the works of the pioneer masters of music and this high goal resulted in creation of two albums, "Shabahang" and "Karevan-saba". Persian setar master Daryush Safvat playing the modes Chahargah and Abu Ata in Paris in about 1962. The sound recording was made by Lloyd Miller who recently added photos and video visuals from the 1970s attempting to partly match the video with the sound for this posting. Dr. Safvat is still active in Iran as the main exponent of the correct traditional old modal system which has been passed down over the millenia. In Paris Dr. Safvat taught Persian traditional music at the Centre d'etudes de musique orientale where Mr. Miller studied santur, setar and zarb. In the 1970s, Dr. Safvat was the main force in salvaging traditional Persian music from destruction by westernization.
