A safari () is an overland journey, usually a trip by tourists to Africa. Traditionally, the term is used for a big-game hunt, but today the term often refers to a trip taken not for the purposes of hunting, but to observe and photograph animals and other wildlife.

Etymology[link]

Entering the English language in the late 19th century, the Swahili word ''safari'' means "long journey." Originally from the Arabic سفرة (safra) meaning ''a journey'' The verb for "to travel" in Swahili is "kusafiri", the noun for the journey is "safari". These words are used for any type of journey, e.g. by bus from Nairobi to Mombasa. The person generally attributed to having used the word in English is Sir Richard Francis Burton, the famous explorer.

The Regimental March of the King's African Rifles was 'Funga Safari', literally 'Halt the March', or, in other words, stop work for the day.

On Kenya's independence from Britain, Funga Safari was retained as the Regimental March of the Kenya Rifles, successor to the K.A.R.

Today there are many operators throughout the African continent offering different levels of safari service, from lodge based tours, where clients travel between lodges or tented camps often by air, fly in safaris where clients will meet the camps and staff after travel by plane or helicopter, to the true Mobile Safari operation where the clients travel with the Guides, staff and equipment from site to site. The Mobile Safari offers guests a genuine safari experience, and they are often very ecologically friendly as they allow areas to regenerate and wildlife do not become as habituated to human presence as they may with a permanent lodge or tented camp.

In 1836 William Cornwallis Harris led an expedition purely to observe and record wildlife and landscapes by the expedition's members. Harris established the safari style of journey, starting with a not too strenuous rising at first light, an energetic day walking, an afternoon rest then concluding with a formal dinner and telling stories in the evening over drinks and tobacco.

Literary genre[link]

Jules Verne's first novel ''Five Weeks in a Balloon'' published in 1863 and H. Rider Haggard's first novel ''King Solomon's Mines'' published in 1885, both describe journeys of English travellers on Safari and were best sellers in their day. These two books gave rise to a genre of Safari adventure novels and films.

Cinema genre[link]

The safari provided countless hours of cinema entertainment in sound films from ''Trader Horn'' (1931) onwards. The safari was used in many adventure films such as the Tarzan, Jungle Jim, and Bomba the Jungle Boy film series up to ''The Naked Prey'' (1966) where Cornel Wilde, a white hunter, becomes game himself. Also, safaris and the safari genre films were parodied in the Bob Hope comedies ''Road to Zanzibar'' and ''Call Me Bwana''. An instant 15-minute helicopter safari was shown in ''Africa Addio'' where clients are armed, flown from their hotel and landed in front of an unlucky and baffled elephant. ''Out of Africa'' has Karen Blixen and Denys Finch Hatton travelling, with Denys refusing to abandon home comforts using fine china and crystal and listening to Mozart recordings over the gramophone while on safari trip. Tourists must also have appropriate clothing such as hats, long-sleeved shirts and blankets for when the night gets very cold.

Safari style[link]

There is a certain theme or style associated with the word, which includes khaki clothing, belted bush jackets, pith helmets or slouch hats, and animal skin patterns—like leopard's skin. There is also a term of safari chic that followed the film ''Out of Africa'' . This not only included clothing but also interior design and architecture.

Modern safari[link]

Safaris have today diversified considerably from the initial fledgling expeditions of the pioneering European explorers and colonialists. Tourism is becoming an increasingly prevalent economic factor for many Eastern and Southern African nations, in several regions surpassing traditional industries such as agriculture. Lending to specific conditions such as relative infrastructure or inherent geography countries such as Kenya, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, Uganda, South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe advertise locally specialised safari experiences ranging from Guided Safaris, Mobile Safaris, Walking Safaris and Fly-In Safaris to more niche concepts including Elephant Back Safaris, River Safaris, Primate Safaris, Horseback Safaris, Balloon Safaris and Accessible Safaris for those with disabilities..

Viviane Ndour (born Viviane Chidid) is a Senegalese pop singer who is the former sister-in-law of Youssou N'Dour. She is known by some as the "Queen of Mbalax." She has two children, a boy and a girl, with her ex husband Bouba Ndour.

Viviane was born in Senegal in one of the coastal cities near the Atlantic Ocean. Her music combines traditional Senegalese mbalax music with elements of U.S. rap and R&B;. She released her first album in 1999 and formed a group called Le Jolof Band in 2001. Most of her songs are in either Wolof or English though a few are in French, the official language of Senegal. She is Muslim.

As of 2009, Viviane currently had two albums actively selling on the market, in grocery stores and even in the shop in Senegal's airport. Those two albums were Bataclan Cafe (being the most recent) and Man Diarra which arrived in 2005.

Bataclan Cafe contains work recorded live in concert and her monster hit "Beggue Na Lenn" (meaning "love you all" in English) which she has a video for; receiving regular spins on Senegalese television in 2007. The hit single off the 2005 Man Diara album was "Kagna La Giss". In the song she sings vibrantly about missing her loved one, and dreaming and wishing of his return. Like many Wolof songs, and as tradition in music of the region, the song builds and builds to a climax and the final verse captures her giving shout-outs to various people. In 2010 she gained her first taste of international notoriety by doing a commercial for the Ritz cracker company where she can be heard singing her song "Ta Ta Viviane!"

Other hit videos of her are tracks such as "Welcome to Africa" with Mokobe, and possibly her greatest achievement, "Cheri Boy" in which we find Viviane effortlessly blending hip-hop, R&B;, Reggae, and traditional Senegalese sound all in one track. The beat of the song has a soft, smooth reggae feel, the chorus is sung R&B; style, and the verses are 16 bar raps like American style hip-hop.

Her remake, "Goor Fit," featured on Entre Nous/Between Us/Ci Sunu Biir, proved to be one of her most memorable and popular songs, so naturally there had to be still another version, "Am Fit," from 2003's Fii Ak Fee (Jololi). I've always liked Aaliyah's original, but Viviane's versions take the song to transcendent new levels."

Live Shows[link]

While some of her songs may borrow American styles, Viviane Ndour still stays true to her roots as a Senegalese artist. In her live shows, the songs do not follow the usual 3 to 5 minute formats of American songs. She usually has a live band, and the drum work is provided in traditional fashion as a dancer will make movements responding naturally to whatever changes in rhythm the drummer may decide to make. Unscripted, whenever Viviane decides, she will again return to the song, but much of it is separated with interaction/ad libs with the audience.

Bert Kaempfert (born Berthold Kämpfert; 16 October 1923 – 21 June 1980) was a German orchestra leader and songwriter. He made easy listening and jazz-oriented records, and wrote the music for a number of well-known songs, such as ''Strangers in the Night'' and ''Spanish Eyes''.

Biography[link]

He was born in Hamburg, Germany - where he received his lifelong nickname, ''Fips'' - and studied at the School of Music there. A multi-instrumentalist, he was hired by Hans Busch to play with his orchestra before serving as a bandsman in the German Navy during World War II. He later formed his own big band, toured with them, then worked as an arranger and producer, making hit records with Freddy Quinn and Ivo Robić. In 1961, he hired The Beatles to back Tony Sheridan for an album called ''My Bonnie''. The album and its singles, released by Polydor, were the Beatles' first commercially released recordings.

Kaempfert's own first hit with his orchestra had been in 1960, with ''Wonderland by Night''. Many of his tunes became better known as hits for other artists:

''Strangers in the Night'' (with words by Charles Singleton and Eddie Snyder, was originally recorded as part of his score for the 1965 film ''A Man Could Get Killed''. It became a #1 hit for Frank Sinatra in 1966.

''Wooden Heart'', sung by Elvis Presley in the film ''GI Blues'' was a hit in 1961. A cover of ''Wooden Heart'' performed by Joe Dowell became a big hit in the summer of 1961, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 28 of that year. Bert arranged this traditional German folk song for the Presley movie.

His instrumental ''Moon Over Naples'', when given words by Snyder, became ''Spanish Eyes'', originally a hit for Al Martino and also recorded by Engelbert Humperdinck, Presley, and many others.

''Danke Schoen'', with words added by Kurt Schwabach and Milt Gabler, became Wayne Newton's signature song.

''L-O-V-E'', with words added by Milt Gabler, was a hit for Nat King Cole

''Almost There'', No. 67 on U.S. charts but No. 2 on U.K. charts, was recorded by Andy Williams

His ''90 Minuten nach Mitternacht'' (Terror After Midnight) movie theme, with lyrics added by Herb Rehbein and Joe Seneca, became a pop ballad called ''Love After Midnight'', recorded by both Patti Page (1964) and Jack Jones (1966).

''Tenderly,'' ''Three O'Clock in the Morning,'' ''Red Roses for a Blue Lady'' and other American standards which Bert recorded, were covered frequently by other easy-listening or middle-of-the-road performers.

A jazzier number called ''A Swingin' Safari'' was the initial theme tune for the long-running TV game show, ''The Match Game'' used on the NBC version from 1962-67. ''A Swingin' Safari'' also hit the ''Billboard'' charts by Billy Vaughn, the single release peaking at #13 in the summer of 1962. Another 1962 single, ''That Happy Feeling'', became well known as background music for children's television programming, most notably that of Sandy Becker on his daily WNEW-TV (now WNYW) show in New York between 1963 and 1967.

The LP entitled ''A Swingin' Safari'' was heavily influenced by South African "kwela" style music, containing versions of ''Zambesi'', ''Wimoweh'', ''Skokiaan'', and ''Afrikaan Beat'', as well as the title track, which made Kaempfert an early exponent of world music.

''Tahitian Sunset'' was sampled extensively by the lo-fi dance artists Lemon Jelly as their track ''In the Bath''.

The instrumental ''That Happy Feeling'' became a well-known theme song for one of the New York City children's shows, hosted in the early 1960s, by Sandy Becker.

Kaempfert's orchestra made extensive use of horns. A couple of numbers that featured brass prominently, ''Magic Trumpet'' and ''The Mexican Shuffle,'' were played by both Kaempfert's orchestra and by the Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, whose initially Mariachi style, in fact, evolved towards the Kaempfert style as the 1960s progressed. The Brass covered ''Magic Trumpet'', and Kaempfert returned the favor by covering Brass compadre Sol Lake's number, ''The Mexican Shuffle''. The latter tune evolved into a TV ad, ''The Teaberry Shuffle''.

Many of his hits during this period were composed and arranged with the help of fellow German Herb Rehbein, who became a successful bandleader in his own right. Rehbein's death in 1979 shook Kaempfert deeply. Both Kaempfert and Rehbein were posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

In 1963 jazz trumpeter Bobby Hackett recorded a complete album with 12 Kaempfert compositions, ''Bobby Hackett Plays The Music Of Bert Kaempfert''. It has now been re-released in the United States under the Sony Records label in the ''Collectable Jazz Classics'' series, along with the album ''Bobby Hackett Plays The Music Of Henry Mancini'' on a “2 in 1” CD.

In 1967 jazz clarinetist Pete Fountain recorded the album ''Pete Fountain Plays Bert Kaempfert'' in Hamburg, Germany with musicians from Kaempfert’s orchestra. It featured Kaempfert’s signature hits.

In 1967 the Anita Kerr Singers released the LP ''Bert Kaempfert Turns Us On!'', a tribute to Kaempfert featuring the standard hits.

In 1968 jazz trumpeter Al Hirt recorded the album ''Al Hirt Plays Bert Kaempfert''. It, too, featured Kaempfert’s major hits.

In 1970 Johnny Mathis issued a double-LP album set, ''Sings the Music of Bacharach & Kaempfert'', for Columbia. It consisted of a total 21 tracks in a heavyweight gatefold picture sleeve. The Kaempfert tracks were done in his arrangement style, and the Bacharach tracks were done in the American’s unique upbeat style.

By the 1970s, sales of Kaempfert's music had dropped off somewhat, but he continued to record (his version of the ''Theme from Shaft'' was admired by Isaac Hayes himself) and remained popular with audiences. He expanded the musical scope of his band and recorded in a wide variety of styles. He also began to play live concerts with his orchestra, beginning in 1974, with a successful appearance at London's Royal Albert Hall. A cigarette smoker (as illustrated on the posthumous ''Best of'' CD), he died suddenly, at the age of 56, following a stroke at his home on Majorca, shortly after a successful appearance in Britain.

Kaempfert used many musicians who were available in Germany and other parts of Europe, including many of the same players who played for James Last, Kai Warner and Roberto Delgado. He featured such top soloists as trumpeters Charly Tabor, Werner Gutterer, Manfred Moch and Ack van Rooyen, trombonists Ake Persson and Jiggs Whigham, and sax/flute player Herb Geller. Drummer Rolf Ahrens supplied the characteristically simple but steady beat, often playing just a snare drum with brushes.

Another contributor to Kaempfert's music was guitarist/bassist Ladislav "Ladi" Geisler, who popularized the famous "knackbass" (crackling bass) sound, using the Fender Telecaster Bass Guitar, which became the most distinctive feature of many Kaempfert recordings - a treble staccato bass guitar sound in which the bass string was plucked with a pick and immediately suppressed to cancel out any sustain. It was Geisler who lent his guitar amplifier to The Beatles for their recording session with Tony Sheridan, after the band's own equipment proved to be inadequate for recording purposes.

Influence[link]

Kaempfert is both sampled and referenced in the hit song ''One Week'' by the Barenaked Ladies. A lyric in that song states that "Bert Kaempfert's got the mad hits."

Jimi Hendrix included the melody of ''Strangers in the Night'' in his improvised guitar solo for his famous guitar-burning version of ''Wild Thing'' at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.
