Filmnews was a monthly newspaper dealing with independent film production, distribution and exhibition in Australia and the federal and state government policies and practices which supported them. It was produced in Sydney but distributed Australia-wide, containing news, reviews, interviews, articles and some gossip on the local film community. It ran from the easrly 1970s to mid 1994.

History

Filmnews was born from the irregular roneoed newsletter of a group of filmmakers struggling to distribute their films at a time when film was still a very marginalised activity; it developed through the life of the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op from a paper mainly concerned with screening information and members' news to a journal that took a vital interest in and a strong position on all the issues that concerned the filmmaker/worker community around the Co-op; and after the demise of the Co-op it further broadened its base to encompass the wide range of cultural and industrial concerns that affect the film, media and communications sector.

Over the nearly twenty years of its existence Filmnews followed the many issues that have contributed to the development of film and media policy, theory, and practice, surveyed the development of individual filmmakers and videographers, of filmmaking practice in all its formats, and of the film community itself. In fact, it charted the change from a struggling, marginalised group of determined individuals to a strong and healthy industry. As the various film and video organisations around Australia came into being, they provided operational bases for a film and video community of plurality, diversity and innovation, and Filmnews documented their histories, recorded their activities and shared their commitment to screen culture. Filmnews gradually developed into a journal that provided an independent, critical perspective on all those issues that affected the production, distribution and exhibition of film and video in Australia, and aimed to supply both information and analysis to a readership that ranged from film practitioners to those working in screen education and film studies, to both teachers and students. And Filmnews was vigilant in continually questioning the practices of the industry, of government in relation to film and funding policies, of the funding bodies, and of screen education and training providers.

Content

The content of Filmnews ranged from major articles and extensive interviews to great photos and other illustrations, and was enlivened by cartoons, poems and other short pieces, and even comic strips, while the news and gossip page, ''Who’s Doing What'', was essential reading. Our reviews, of films, related books, the occasional TV program, ranged from short and snappy to very extensive, and the obituaries of important local and overseas film people became a feature. FilmNews’ coverage of specific subjects or themes - such as government assistance, women's filmmaking, public and community broadcasting, censorship, copyright, new technologies, the various institutions within the film landscape (Film Australia, the AFI, SBS, AFTRS, the state funding bodies, and of course the AFC itself) and changes in documentary practice – featured solid reporting and informed commentary. And although there were some spirited and very lively stoushes over coverage of some of these issues, they never caused real damage. It was probably both the range and diversity of its content and the unusual juxtapositions of issues, events and people that made filmnews so unique, and made its readers so attached to it. And it was a matter of absolute conviction to all involved with producing Filmnews that production, distribution, exhibition and the audience are inseparable, and all are part of an overarching screen culture.

A readership survey in 1986 discovered that the typical reader was involved in film or video production, was male and in his twenties, was relatively poor, and loved the writing of Adrian Martin. He went to the movies at least once a week, bought several other film journals, regularly attended conferences, and spent up to $10,000 a year on film or video production services. Readers loved Filmnews, the only changes they wanted was more of what they were already getting – although one respondent did argue for `more criticism of local independent film and video, but better argued and less righteous.’ And another argued for more obituaries.

For ten years Filmnews was part of the C-op – often, and for most people, the most visible part. Filmnews was involved in all the fights, the campaigns, the lobbying, the victories and the conflicts that were so much part of Co-op life. Filmnews explained and analysed Co-op changes in policy, argued for more attention and funding to be given to the production of independent film and video, and to independent distribution and exhibition. Women’s films and women filmmakers became a strong and important element in Filmnews, including campaigns for training and workshops for women; the theory and the practice, the setting up of and the progress of the Women’s Film Fund and the Women’s film units became a continuing theme. Indigenous film making, films on black Australia, and the need for an Indigenous film unit was another strong campaign.

Then, almost overnight, the Co-op was gone. The cinema had closed down in 1981, when the AFC decided not to fund it any longer; but the AFC supported the Co-op’s move to new premises in Pyrmont, and encouraged more aggressive marketing and distribution policies. But these policies stretched the Co-op’s resources, and the AFC decided that only one government-funded distribution body was to be supported and that was the AFI; the Co-op had to close its doors. After a brief and badly thought out relationship with a commercial proprietor (Encore) selected by the AFC, FilmNews was allowed to become its own entity. Given a home for several years by Metro TV (now Metro Screen) in the Paddington Town Hall complex, and then by UTS, proved fruitful in both cases. New writers, new topics, new ways of looking at issues came out of both relationships, and Filmnews continued and improved its coverage of a growing, developing community that encompassed film and television production, film and media policies, and the institutions and organisations that covered and represented all sorts of different aspects of an increasingly diverse and complex area.

Demise

Filmnews was always funded by the AFC. Small and spasmodic amounts of funding came from the various state bodies, a regular and reasonable advertising revenue was earned, a respectable number of subscriptions sold, both locally and overseas, but the AFC was the major support. They continually tried to have a cover price applied, despite a regular and well argued responses that proved (to our eyes at least) that a free distribution was a far more effective way of getting to the audience, and that trying to compete with other publications in newsagents would probably kill Filmnews off. But they kept the funding at a static level for a number of years, and although they did fund me to go on a research mission to the other states to talk about increasing state input and funding (which looked promising), they suddenly pulled the plug on FilmNews in 1994. There was a brief effort to restart FilmNews in 1995, with a new editor (Paul Kalina), but with all the original support systems cancelled, it was just too hard to reinvigorate publication without the time, money, and resources the AFC was unwilling to provide. So the AFC put their film publication money into RealTime and a little more to Metro, while IF and FILMINK magazines got going.

Ravi Teja (born Bhupatiraju Ravi Shankar Raju on 26 January 1968) is an Indian Telugu film actor. He won the Nandi Award for Best Actor for the film ''Neninthe'' in 2008. He has acted in other films including ''Avunu Valliddaru Ista Paddaru'', ''Idiot'', ''Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi'', ''Venky'', ''Bhadra'', ''Vikramarkudu'', ''Krishna'', ''Kick'', and ''Mirapakaay''. These successful films have established him within a short period of time as one of the leading actors in Tollywood.

Early life

Ravi Teja was born as Bhupatiraju Ravishankar Raju to father Bhupatiraju Rajgopal Raju and mother Rajya Lakshmi Bhupatiraju on 26 January 1968 in the Indian village of Jaggampeta, Andhra Pradesh, India. Ravi Teja's father was a pharmacist and mother was a homemaker. He is the eldest of three sons and the other two Bharath and Raghu are also actors. Ravi Teja spent most of his childhood in Northern India because his father used to move very often due to his work. Due to that, his schooling was done in Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai and Bhopal. Ravi Teja completed his schooling at N.S.M. public school. Later on he moved to Vijayawada along with his family and completed his Bachelors in Arts at Siddhartha Degree College. From early child hood Ravi Teja had dreamt of acting in films. As a result, in 1988 he went to Chennai to start his career in films.

Personal life

Ravi Teja got married to Kalyani in 2002. The couple have two children, Mokshadha (b. 2003) and Mahadhan (b. 2006). He is known to be good friends with Puri Jagannadh.

Career

Early career (1990-1996)

In the following years of his arrival to Chennai, Ravi Teja struggled to get even a small opportunity to prove himself at acting. Strong willed, Ravi never gave up on his dream to be an actor. Y. V. S. Chowdary and Gunasekhar were his roommates during struggling days Finally after few years of struggle, he began his career with small roles in films like ''Karthavyam'' (1991), ''Chaitanya'' (1991) and ''Aaj Ka Goonda Raj'' (1992). After gaining few years of experience, Ravi became an assistant director. He worked in both television and films. As an assistant director, he worked in several Bollywood as well as Telugu projects including ''Prathibandh'', ''Aaj Ka Goondaraj'', and ''Criminal''. He met Krishna Vamsi and worked as an assistant director under him for the 1996 hit film ''Ninne Pelladutha''. Vamsi also gave Ravi an opportunity to act in a small role in that film. He continued to work as an assistant director for few other films.

''Sindhooram'', ''Nee Kosam'' and breakthrough (1997-2000)

In 1997, while still working as an assistant director, Ravi got an opportunity to act in the film ''Sindhooram'' directed by Krishna Vamsi. Vamsi cast Ravi as one of the lead actors. The film was critically acclaimed and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. Ravi Teja's performance was critically acclaimed and was appreciated by the movie-goers. This was the turning point for Ravi's acting career.

Following the fame he got, he continued acting in small yet significant roles in films like ''Seetharamaraju'', ''Padutha Teeyaga'', ''Manasichhi Choodu'' and S. V. Krishna Reddy's ''Premaku Velayara''. He became well known to Telugu movie-goers with these films and was acclaimed for his acting. In 1999, he was cast in a leading role by Srinu Vaitla for ''Nee Kosam'' co-starring Maheswari. The film was critically acclaimed and won the Silver Nandi for Best Film. In 2001, Ravi Teja's association with Puri Jagannadh began when the later cast Ravi as the lead role in ''Itlu Sravani Subramanyam''. In 2011, Ravi Teja was seen in blockbuster hit film ''Mirapakaay'', directed by Harish Shankar. Co-starring Richa Gangopadhyay and Deeksha Seth, it performed very well at the box office. Ravi was credited as "Mass Maharaja" for this film, implying his massive following in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh: "Mass Maharaj" Ravi Teja. The year had him acting in the experimental film ''Dongala Mutha'' under the direction of Ram Gopal Varma. With a crew of only eight people including Varma, filming was completed within five days and was made with a budget of 6.5 lakh budget. Later that year, Ravi Teja appeared in ''Veera'', directed by Ramesh Varma and co-starring Kajal Aggarwal and Taapsee Pannu. The film received mixed reviews and had an average run at the box office. He also did a cameo in Ram Gopal Varma's ''Katha Screenplay Darshakatvam Appalaraju''. In 2012, Ravi was seen in ''Nippu'' under the direction of Gunasekhar. Riya Sen ( ; born Riya Dev Varma on 24 January 1981) is an Indian film actress and model. Riya, who comes from a family of actors including her grandmother Suchitra Sen, mother Moon Moon Sen and sister Raima Sen, began her acting career in 1991 as a child actress in the film ''Vishkanya''. Her first commercial success in her film career was with ''Style'', a 2001 Hindi low-budget sex comedy directed by N. Chandra. Some of her other films include producer Pritish Nandy's musical film, ''Jhankaar Beats'' (2003) in Hinglish, ''Shaadi No. 1'' (2005) Malayalam horror film ''Ananthabhadram'' (2005).

Riya was first recognised as a model when she performed in Falguni Pathak's music video ''Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi'' at the age of sixteen. Since then, she has appeared in music videos, television commercials, fashion shows, and on magazine covers. She has been a heartthrob sensation throughout India. Riya has worked as an activist and appeared in an AIDS awareness music video with the aim of dispelling popular myths about the disease. She also helped raise funds for pediatric eye-care. Riya has faced controversies such as a MMS clip with actor Ashmit Patel, her semi-nude photograph on photographer Dabboo Ratnani's annual calendar and her on-screen kisses in a conservative Indian film industry.

Acting career

Riya first appeared as a child artist in the film ''Vishkanya'' in 1991, where she played the role of the young Pooja Bedi. At the age of 18, she did National Film Awards winning director Bharathiraja's Tamil film, ''Taj Mahal'' (2000), which did not achieve commercial success. She was scheduled to make her Bollywood film debut in ''Love You Hamesha'', opposite actor Akshaye Khanna; however, the film was stalled, and she finally made her debut in N. Chandra's ''Style'' in 2001. This low-budget sex comedy was the first commercial success in over a decade for the director. A launch pad for Riya, cast in the female lead along with fellow-newcomers, Sharman Joshi, Sahil Khan and Shilpi Mudgal, the film pioneered a trend of commercial success for small budget films in India. Riya and the second female lead of the film were replaced by aspirant actresses Sunali Joshi and Jaya Seal in ''Xc'.

Her next success was ''Jhankaar Beats'', a comedy revolving around the music of legendary composer R D Burman, which saw her playing a small and glamorous role alongside Shayan Munshi, Juhi Chawla, Rahul Bose, Rinke Khanna and Sanjay Suri. Produced by Pritish Nandy, publishing director of ''The Times of India'', the film was made on a budget of Rs. 25 million (US$525,000), marking the sixth in a row of small to medium budget films made by Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC). Despite being part of a wave of offbeat films that mostly failed to make an impact at the box office, it drew public attention upon its release, which led to a commercial success among a restricted audience targeted by a selective release in twenty cities. It was one of the first films made in Hinglish, a mixture of Hindi and English. In 2005, she starred in ''Shaadi No. 1'', which had no female lead. This comedy, based on the theme of modern marriage, was directed by David Dhawan, a renowned film director from this genre.

Although films like ''Style'' and ''Jhankar Beats'' succeeded commercially, most of her later films have generated less revenue. A number of them remained unfinished. While many of her appearances have been item numbers and cameos, few of her leading roles have been in low-budget films. Though she had small roles in ''Dil Vil Pyar Vyar'' (2002), ''Qayamat'' (2003) and ''Plan'' (2004), attention was drawn to her item numbers in all three, especially the one in ''Qayamat'' that featured her in a bubble-bath. Non-Hindi films

Riya has, in addition to Bollywood films, appeared in Bengali, Tamil,Telugu, Malayalam and English films. Her film career began in the earnest with Tamil films such as Bharathi Raja's ''Taj Mahal'', co-starring Manjoj Bharatiraja in the male lead, and Manoj Bhatnaghar's ''Good Luck'', oppsite Prasanth. Both of the films failed commercially, and she had a brief reappearance in Tamil cinema only to perform in a dance number for N. Maharajan's ''Arasatchi''.

Her first English language movie was ''It Was Raining That Night'', a remake of the Bengali film ''Hei Brishtir Raat'', scripted by Sudeshna Roy and directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. In the film, she collaborated with mother Moon Moon Sen. Riya was slated to appear in Anjan Dutta's Bengali-English bilingual film ''The Bong Connection'' with her sister, but she was eventually dropped from the project and replaced by Peeya Rai Chaudhary. The two sisters were later cast together in director Ajai Sinha's ''The Bachelor'', a Bengali film that, as of 2008, is yet to be finished.

Her most successful non-Hindi film has been director Santhosh Sivan's ''Ananthabhadram'' (2005). The first Malayalam venture for both Riya and Sivan, was both a critical and commercial success. It won five Kerala State Film Awards and surfaced as one of the biggest Malayalam successes that year. She played the role of ''Bhama'' in the film, a village girl who is lured by Digambaran, the evil magician portrayed by Manoj K. Jayan. In a song-and-dance sequence showing Digambaran turning Bhama into a medium for demonic rituals, the choreographer Aparna Sindoor made abundant use Kathakali movements. The use of Kathakali has been a high point in the resurgence of the classical dance form in other major Indian films as well, including Shaji Karun's ''Vanaprastham'' (1999) and Adoor Gopalakrishnan's ''Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair'' (2005). She made her Telugu Debut with ''Nenu Meeku Telusa...?'', in which she was paired opposite Manoj Manchu.

Modeling career

Riya became a popular model when she appeared in numerous music videos for songs by popular singers, including Falguni Pathak's ''Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi'' (alternative title: ''Chudi Jo Khankayi''), Asha Bhosle's ''Jhumka Gira Re'', Jagjit Singh and Bhosle's ''Jab Samne Tum'' and ''Kahin Kahin Se'', Lata Mangeshkar, Bhonsle and Singh's ''Dil Kahin Hosh Kahin'', Sonu Nigam's ''Jeena Hai Tere Liye'' and Shaan's ''Sutta Maro''. She shot for her first music video, ''Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi'', at the age of sixteen. This led to her being identified primarily as a performer for music videos early in her career, an image she aimed to shed in 2005. Riya has appeared on several magazine covers, including ''Femina'', ''Elaan'', ''Man's World'', ''Gladrags'', ''Savvy'' and Indian versions of ''Elle'', ''Maxim'' and ''Cosmopolitan'', as well as on the ramp of major fashion shows like Lakmé Fashion Week (2005–07) and Wills Fashion Week (2006–2007). She participated in fashion shows along with her elder sister, Raima Sen. Besides modeling, Riya has ventured into the advertisement world as well. A high point of her modeling career came in 2006, when she became the soft drink, Limca's brand ambassador, replacing Deepika Padukone. Her other notable assignments include Colgate, Dabur Vatika, Reliance Industries, Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, and Nirma.

In 2004, she was featured partially nude in leading Indian photographer Dabboo Ratnani's annual calendar, which is a major happening in the Indian glamor industry. According to Daboo, "Her mother saw it much later, after the calendar released. She thought it was too sexy, and Riya shouldn't have done it. But the response to the photograph was superb. Riya was so thrilled that for her next ad campaign, she asked me to light her up like I did in this." A career highlight for the model, it led to a three year contract with Ratnani to feature her on his annual calendar. She is the only female face to be featured on the calendar in five consecutive years (2003–07).

Personal life and family

Born on 24 January 1981 in Kolkata, West Bengal, Riya is the daughter of Moon Moon Sen, a former actress, and granddaughter of Suchitra Sen, a legend in Bengali cinema. Before leaving for Mumbai, she lived in Kolkata with her parents and sister Raima Sen, also an actress. Her father Bharat Dev Varma is a member of the royal family of Tripura. Her paternal grandmother, Ila Devi, was the princess of Cooch Behar, whose younger sister Gayatri Devi was the Maharani of Jaipur. Her paternal great-grandmother Indira was the only daughter of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Baroda. Riya's maternal great-grandfather Adinath Sen was a prominent Kolkata businessman, whose father Dinanath Sen - a relative of former Union Law Minister Ashoke Kumar Sen- was the Diwan or a Minister of the Maharaja of Tripura. The sisters are credited on-screen under their mother's maiden name, although their official papers carry the surname Dev Varma.

Riya completed her schooling at Loreto House and Rani Birla Girls' College, both in Kolkata. Thereafter, she studied at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, and she took up jewellery-designing as a hobby. She designs most of the clothes that she wears in films and commercials. Riya is trained in Kathak and is still pursuing it under Vijayshree Chaudhury. She is taking kickboxing lessons and has completed Level I of the 5 levels in belly dancing. Riya entered the film industry through small-time modeling assignments, commuting between Mumbai and Kolkata and traveling by public transport during her early career. After breaking into the film industry, she shifted from her mother's house in Ballygunge Circular Road in south Kolkata to Mumbai. There she moved into the family house in Juhu, where she stays with her sister. During her stay in Mumbai, the media romantically linked her to model and actor John Abraham. In the Bollywood press, she was, in 2008, speculatively linked to the novelist Salman Rushdie, although both stated that they were simply good friends.

Riya has suffered a number of untimely incidents. During the filming of ''Shaadi No. 1'' in France, she was knocked unconscious after being accidentally run over by a stuntman's motorbike, but she was not seriously injured. Shortly before the release of ''Silsiilay'', in which she starred opposite her boyfriend Ashmit Patel, a 90-second video clip was circulated through Multimedia Messaging Services and the internet, showing the pair in compromising situations. This was one of a number of controversies that erupted when celebrities were caught in similar situations using cameraphones. Following this incident, the couple split up, although Riya denied that she was the girl in the MMS clip. One commentator claimed that the footage was an orchestrated publicity stunt. In 2007, she underwent a brief detoxification session in Bangkok for addiction to chocolate.

Public persona

Riya's on-screen performances have established her as a sex symbol and youth icon in India. Since entering the film industry, she has gained attention for wearing a bikini in ''Shaadi No. 1'' and sharing on-screen kisses with co-stars Ashmit Patel in ''Silsiilay'' and Sharman Joshi in ''Style'', respectively. Such performances garnered attention because of the relatively conservative outlook of Indian cinema and her own statements about such practises. Before becoming a film identity, she had a reputation for partying, which started at the age of fifteen. Riya's public persona is compared to her mother Moon Moon, who was seen as a sex symbol of her time, while her sister Raima is mostly compared their grandmother Suchitra.

Although her film career has yet to achieve large-scale success, Riya has generated considerable media attention. She was ranked ninth on ''Femina 50 Most Beautiful Women'', published in the magazine's September 2007 issue. She was a jury member for the 2008 Final of the Mr. India contest. Along with Bollywood actors such as Waheeda Rehman, Shilpa Shetty, Dia Mirza, Raveena Tandon, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Tabu and Lara Dutta, Riya appeared in ''Haath Se Haath Mila'', an HIV/AIDS awareness music video. She made charity appearances at McDonald's India to raise money for paediatric eye-care during World Children's Week (14–20 November) in 2003.

Tusshar Kapoor (तुषार कपूर; born 21 June 1976 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) is an Indian actor. He is the son of [[Bollywood actor Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor and brother of Ekta Kapoor. He studied at the University of Michigan and graduated with a BBA from the [[Ross School of Business">Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Tushar made his debut with Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai alongside Kareena Kapoor in 2001. The next two years followed with a list of box office flops, although he was noted for acting alongside his father in the teen slasher film ''Kucch To Hai'' (2003). He was recognized for his role as a shy boy who gains the ability to become invisible in ''Gayab'' (2004). Kapoor appeared in comic roles in ''Golmaal '' (2006) and ''Golmaal Returns '' (2008) and ''Golmaal 3'' (2010).
