A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows fashion designers, brands or "houses" to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends. Most importantly, these events let the industry know what's "in" and what's "out" for the season. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the four fashion capitals of the world: New York City, London, Milan, and Paris.^[1] Some other important fashion weeks in the world are held in Australia, Bangalore, Jakarta, Berlin, Barcelona, Seoul, Tokyo, São Paulo, Los Angeles, Łódź, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Singapore, Toronto, Madrid.^{[citation needed]}

In the major fashion capitals, fashion weeks are semiannual events. January through April designers showcase their autumn and winter collections and September through November the spring/summer collections are shown. Fashion weeks must be held several months in advance of the season to allow the press and buyers a chance to preview fashion designs for the following season. This is also to allow time for retailers to arrange to purchase or incorporate the designers into their retail marketing. Latest innovations in dress designs are showcased by renowned fashion designers during these fashion weeks, and all these latest collections are covered in magazines such as designerzcentral and Vogue.

New York City, London, Milan, and Paris each host a fashion week twice a year with New York beginning each season and the other cities following in the aforementioned order.

There are two major seasons per year - Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer. For womenswear, the Autumn/Winter shows always start in New York in February and end in Paris in March. Spring/Summer shows start in New York in September and end in Paris in October. Menswear Autumn/Winter shows start in January in Milan for typically less than a week followed by another short week in Paris. Menswear Spring/Summer shows are done in June. Womenswear haute couture shows typically happen in Paris a week after the Menswear Paris shows. For the first time, womenswear haute couture will also be shown in Singapore, during its haute couture Women's Fashion Week in October 2011. This will be the first time womenswear haute couture shows are held outside of Paris.^[2][3]

Over the past few years,^[when?] more and more designers have shown inter-seasonal collections between the traditional Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons. These collections are usually more commercial than the main season collections and help shorten the customer's wait for new season clothes. The inter-seasonal collections are Resort/Cruise (before Spring/Summer) and Pre-Fall (before Autumn/Winter). There is no fixed schedule for these shows in any of the major fashion capitals but they typically happen three months after the main season shows. Some designers show their inter-seasonal collections outside their home city. For example, Karl Lagerfeld has shown his Resort and Pre-Fall collections for Chanel in cities such as Moscow, Los Angeles and Monte Carlo instead of Paris. Many designers also put on presentations as opposed to traditional shows during Resort and Pre-Fall either to cut down costs or because they feel the clothes can be better understood in this medium.

Some fashion weeks can be genre-specific, such as a Miami Fashion Week (swimwear), Rio Summer (swimwear), Prêt-a-Porter (ready-to-wear) Fashion Week, Couture (one-of-a-kind designer original) Fashion Week and Bridal Fashion Week, while Portland (Oregon, USA) Fashion Week shows some eco-friendly designers.

In 1943, the first french Fashion Week was held, with one main purpose: to distract attention from French fashion during World War II, when workers in the fashion industry were unable to travel to Paris. This was an opportune moment - as for centuries designers in America were thought to be reliant on the French for inspiration. The fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized an event she called ‘Press Week’ to showcase American designers for fashion journalists, who had previously ignored their works. The Press Week was a success, and, as a result, magazines like Vogue (which were normally filled with French designs) began to feature more and more American innovations. Until 1994, shows were held in different locations, such as hotels, or lofts. Eventually, after a structural accident at a Michael Kors show, the event moved to Bryant Park, behind the New York Public Library, where it remained until 2010, when the shows relocated to Lincoln Center.

However, long before Lambert, there were fashion shows throughout America. In 1903, a New York City shop called Ehrich Brothers put on what is thought to have been the country’s first fashion show to lure middle-class females into the store.^[4] By 1910, many big department stores were holding shows of their own. It is likely that American retailers saw that they were called 'fashion parades' in Paris couture salons and decided to use the idea. These parades were an effective way to promote stores, and improved their status. By the 1920s, the fashion show had been used by retailers up and down the country. They were staged, and often held in the shop’s restaurant during lunch or teatime. These shows were usually more theatrical than those of today, heavily based upon a single theme, and accompanied with a narrative commentary. The shows were hugely popular, enticing crowds in their thousands – crowds so large, that stores in New York in the fifties had to obtain a license to have live models.

Whitney Eve Port (born March 4, 1985)^[1] is an American television personality, clothing designer, and author. She is known for being one of the main cast members on the former MTV reality series The Hills. She was the narrator and main star of the former MTV reality series spin-off, The City. Port was formerly a fashion contributor for Teen Vogue and has worked for Diane von Fürstenberg.

Port was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of Jeffery and Vicki Lyn Port (née Woskoff). She has an older brother, Ryan, an older sister, Ashley, and two younger sisters, Paige and Jade. Her father, Jeff, is the owner of a fashion company called Swarm.^[2][3] She comes from a Jewish family.

Whitney Port attended Warner Avenue Elementary School. She then went to Crossroads School for the Arts and Sciences for middle school and high school. In 2007, Port graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) with a degree in gender studies.

[edit] 2006-2008: The Hills, Teen Vogue, and People's Revolution

Prior to working at Teen Vogue, Port was an intern for the Women's Wear Daily magazine for two summers. She also interned at W magazine for three summers.

In 2006, Port was cast as one of four main cast members in the MTV reality series, The Hills. During the first two seasons of the series, Port had her first experience as a runway model, walking in a DKNY Jeans show at Los Angeles Fashion Week. She had also modeled Hilary Swank's dress from the 2005 Academy Awards on a live Good Morning America segment with André Leon Talley, the editor-at-large of Vogue magazine, during which she had tripped down the stairs. Port's Teen Vogue supervisor and editor Lisa Love praised her for handling the incident with class and grace.^[4] She has also been featured on magazine covers like Teen Vogue, Rolling Stone (with her fellow Hills castmates), Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.

At the end of The Hills season one, Teen Vogue offered Conrad the opportunity to spend the summer of 2006 working in Paris, France. When Conrad chose not to take the job, Port went to Paris in her place.^[4] On the second season of The Hills, Port appeared somewhat more frequently outside the workplace setting. In episode five, Conrad visited Port at her parents' home where she was recuperating from surgery after having her wisdom teeth removed. In another episode, Conrad and Patridge attended Port's softball game.^[4]

From 2005–2007, Port was an intern with Lauren Conrad. The final episode of season two showed Port interviewing at Vogue headquarters in New York for the position of "Fashion Contributor" at Teen Vogue. The episode dramatized the competition between Port and another young woman, Emily Weiss, who had previously appeared in season two as an intern visiting from New York. It was revealed in the season three premiere that Port was awarded the job, and was employed by Teen Vogue in Los Angeles.

Port left Teen Vogue in 2007 for People's Revolution, a PR firm heavily involved in the fashion world. Owned by Kelly Cutrone, People's Revolution has offices in New York, Los Angeles and Paris. Conrad was seen in season 3 episode 24 of The Hills assisting Port at Los Angeles Fashion Week, and at the end of the episode was offered, and accepted, a position at People's Revolution alongside Port. In 2008, Port was awarded an interview with fashion label Diane von Furstenberg for her efforts in People's Revolution. She was accepted for the job and moved to New York. Her job with Diane von Furstenberg was featured extensively on her new reality show The City. It was announced on April 13, 2009 that Whitney had left Diane von Furstenberg and returned to People's Revolution. Port has made cameo appearances as herself in episodes of television series Entourage and Family Guy.

[edit] 2008-2010: The City and Whitney Eve fashion line

In March 2008, Port debuted her clothing line of cocktail and partywear called Whitney Eve. The clothing line was in the New York Fashion Week in September 2009, in the Spring/Summer 2010 season.^[5]

In season four of The Hills, Port began dating Jay Lyon, and was offered the opportunity to move to New York to pursue a career in high fashion at Diane von Fürstenberg. After months of speculation, it was confirmed that Port would receive her own spin-off entitled The City.^[6] The series centered around Port as she moved to New York to work for fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg along with NY socialite, Olivia Palermo, who was asked to be a cast member along with 3 other friends and associates of Port.^[6][7] The series debuted December 29, 2008 on MTV and first season finale aired on March 16, 2009. Whitney's love life played a major role in the series. When her relationship with Lyon ended, a friendship was lost (Erin Lucas), and along with poor ratings, the series' fate was uncertain. Later, MTV renewed The City for 10 more episodes to season one, which premiered September 29, 2009. The second half of season one focused on her ambition to become a designer with her first line Whitney Eve. Her old school-friend and new co-worker, Roxy Olin (daughter of actors Ken Olin and Patricia Wettig) was also featured as a new cast member.

In November 2009 Port revealed during an interview on The View that she had an audition for a lead role in a film later that day sparking rumors that she was planning on launching an acting career, she responded to these rumors on her Twitter page saying that she was interested in acting and had auditioned for several film parts but was holding out for the right role. Whitney's close friend and former co-star Lauren Conrad stated in an interview in February 2010 that she thought Whitney had great talent but was only really interested in acting as a hobby.

On December 1, 2009, Whitney confirmed that The City was renewed for a full second season and focused on the launch of her fashion line, Whitney Eve. Whitney told TVGuide.com, "They're chronicling the whole process from starting to design, to the fashion show at Bryant Park [and] everyone's back in action." ^[8] In October 2010, Port confirmed that MTV had canceled The City after 2 seasons, with no plans for new episodes to air or a move to a new network.^[9]

In September 2010, Port appeared in the online series Hollywood is Like High School with Money which also showcased her clothing line Whitney Eve.^[10] She also served as executive producer of the series.^[11] Later in 2010, Port posed for a spread in Maxim magazine. The pictures were featured in the January 2011 issue.^[12] In 2011, Port served as the host of an online reality game show titled Genuine Ken which was aired on Hulu.com.^[13] In February 2011, Port released an advice book titled True Whit: Designing a Life of Style, Beauty, and Fun.^[14] It has also been confirmed that Whitney will be a judge on Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model alongside supermodel host Elle Macpherson, Julien Macdonald, and new judge Tyson Beckford. ^[15]

Port, who is by her own admission not as comfortable with the spotlight as her other co-stars, explained her decision not to move in with Lauren Conrad and Audrina Patridge in season three of The Hills: "I prefer to keep some things private." Nonetheless, she eventually allowed MTV to showcase more of her personal life when she obtained her own show titled The City.^[16] Port originally relocated to New York City to work for Diane Von Furstenberg. Collette Dinnigan (born 24 September 1965)^[1] is an Australian based fashion designer. Born in South Africa, Dinnigan moved to New Zealand, then Australia, where she obtained work with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. She opened her own range in 1992, and was the first Australian to launch a ready-to-wear collection, in Paris in 1995.^[2][3]

Collette Dinnigan was born in South Africa on 24 September 1965 and her family (including a younger brother) moved to New Zealand when she was young. She graduated from a fashion design course at Wellington Polytechnic and moved to Sydney, Australia, where she worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's costume department.^[3]

In 1992, Dinnigan opened her first store in Australia, and exported her fashions to Barneys New York, Harvey Nichols in London, and Hong Kong.^[3] In 1995, Dinnigan was the first Australian to launch a ready-to-wear collection in Paris; she was also the first to be asked to be in the 'ready-to-wear parade' in Paris. Her range is now stocked in her stores in Sydney, Melbourne and London, and in David Jones department stores. Similar to Stella McCartney and Zac Posen, Dinnigan released a discount line for Target; a lingerie range titled "Wild Hearts" in April 2008.^[4]

Miranda May Kerr (born 20 April 1983)^[1] is an Australian model. Kerr rose to prominence in 2007 as one of the Victoria's Secret Angels. She is the first Australian to participate in the Victoria's Secret campaign and also represents Australian fashion chain David Jones.

Kerr began modeling in the fashion industry when she was 13, starting at Chaay's Modelling Agency, and soon after winning a 1997 Australian nationwide model search hosted by Dolly magazine and Impulse fragrances.^[3] She is married to English actor Orlando Bloom.^[4]

Kerr was born in Sydney^[5] and raised in the small town of Gunnedah, New South Wales.^[6] She is the daughter of Therese and John Kerr. She has a brother, Matthew, who is two years younger. In an interview, Kerr stated she is of English, French, and Scottish descent. During her childhood, Kerr "raced motorbikes and rode horses on her grandmother's farm." She describes her early life in the Australian countryside as "very grounding ... there wasn't any pretentiousness and no one really cared what you were wearing. You could just be you."^[7]

Her family moved to Brisbane to allow Kerr and her brother to experience city life. She graduated from All Hallows' School in 2000. Kerr studied nutrition and health psychology before pursuing modeling.^[8][9]

At age 13, Kerr entered and won the 1997 annual Dolly Magazine/Impulse Model Competition. She was flown to Sydney a week before her 14th birthday to shoot for the magazine. Upon Kerr's win, local media expressed "concerned outrage" at her young age. The controversy raised concerns about the glorification of young girls within the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries.^[7] Some media outlets claimed her Dolly shoot (including images of a 14-year-old Kerr in bathing suits) constituted a form of paedophilia. Of the press, Kerr said: "In the media at the time they were trying to cling on to anything remotely to do with paedophilia. Dolly is a magazine for teenage girls, not for old men. And I was fully clothed! Doing a winter shoot! They just made something out of nothing."^[3]

Kerr signed to Chic Management's Sydney division. She received considerable commercial exposure after a series of beachwear ads predominantly for Australian surf chain Billabong, in which Kerr modeled surf brands Tigerlily, Roxy, Billabong Girls, and One Teaspoon. This increased her profile in the Australian and Asian markets, after which Kerr relocated to New York where she became co-owner of the Bowery Ballroom.^[3][7]

In New York, Kerr had a multitude of runway appearances and then signed with NEXT Model Management in early 2004. From there, she was booked for runway and print campaigns for major labels, including Alex Perry, Baby Phat, Lisa Ho, Voodoo Dolls, Levi's, Bettina Liano, Nicola Finetti, L.A.M.B., Heatherette, Betsey Johnson, Trelise Cooper, Jets, John Richmond, Blumarine Swimwear, Neiman Marcus, Seafolly Swimwear, Anna Molinari, Rock and Republic, Roberto Cavalli, and Ober Jeans.^[2] Kerr was also booked for print in magazines such as Elle, Australian Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and was featured in television advertisements for brands like Portmans, Bonds, and Veet.^[3][7]

In early 2006, Kerr appeared in the finale episode of the TV show Project Runway, modeling clothes for contestant Daniel Vosovic's final collection. She was the first woman to walk down the catwalk. She debuted with the United States market when she signed a lucrative cosmetics contract with Maybelline New York. The campaign ran in a series of internationally sold women's beauty magazines, including Cosmopolitan, CLEO, and Elle, and was eventually featured in Victoria's Secret catalogues.^[7] She (along with several other Victoria's Secret and Next agency models) was also featured in a music video for the American hip-hop single "Number One" by artists Kanye West and Pharrell.^[3]

Following her success with Maybelline,^[7] Kerr became the first Australian model to be offered a contract with Victoria's Secret in 2007, replacing Gisele Bündchen. Upon her acceptance, she became the first ever Australian Victoria's Secret Angel^[10] joining the stable of models already signed to the lingerie giant, including Alessandra Ambrosio, Karolína Kurková, Adriana Lima, Selita Ebanks, Izabel Goulart, and Heidi Klum. Before becoming an Angel in 2007, Kerr was already picked to become the successor of Alessandra Ambrosio as the face of PINK in 2006. Kerr's popularity continued to increase as one of the globally recognized Angels when she appeared in the Victoria's Secret 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 televised runway shows, which aired on four continents.^[7]

In 2007, Kerr had signed on as the face of Californian fashion retailer Arden B. After debuting in their Spring and Summer ad campaigns, Kerr returned for their Fall 2007 campaign, shot by fashion photographer Diego Uchitel.^[3] Following her modeling success with Victoria's Secret, Kerr made a small guest appearance in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother alongside fellow Angels: Adriana Lima, Marisa Miller, Alessandra Ambrosio, Heidi Klum, and Selita Ebanks.^[3] She also became the new face of Clinique Happy and signed a lucrative six-figure deal to be the new face of Australian department store David Jones, replacing model Megan Gale.^[11] In 2008, having earned an estimated $3.5 million in the past 12 months, Forbes placed Kerr tenth in the list of the world's top-earning models.^[12]

In June 2009, Kerr posed naked, chained to a tree, for an issue of Rolling Stone Australia magazine, in order to raise awareness for the endangered koalas.^[16] Her charitable work includes Wildlife Warriors Worldwide and Children International.^[18] In August 2010, Kerr released an inspirational self-esteem, self-help book, Treasure Yourself. She appeared in the 2010 Pirelli Calendar photographed by Terry Richardson in Bahia, Brazil.^[19] Previously better known for her Victoria's Secret status rather than her high fashion work, Balenciaga is credited for launching her high fashion modeling career when casting directors Ashley Brokaw and Nicolas Ghesquière chose her to walk exclusively for the brand's spring 2010 runway show.^[20] It was her first designer fashion show, aside from Victoria's Secret, since 2007.^[2] A season later she walked for design company Prada for their Fall 2010 collection in Milan alongside fellow Angels Doutzen Kroes and Alessandra Ambrosio.^[21] Kerr then modeled for campaigns for Prada and Jil Sander, and was shot by Steven Meisel for the cover of Italian Vogue for September.^[20]

Models.com ranks her number 4 on the Top 20 sexiest models.^[28] She has been ranked in FHM's '100 Sexiest Women' poll at #56 in 2009, #36 in 2010, and #44 in 2011.^[29] She was named one of the "100 Hottest Women of All-Time" by Men's Health.^[30]

Kerr's model trademark is her dimples. Celebrity photographer Russell James said of Kerr, "The US has fallen in love with her. We love her because she has the most incredible girl-next-door look and she's also insanely beautiful. It means women are not intimidated by her looks and guys think they might be able to talk to her. It's a fantastic combination ... people want to be around her; she's fun on a shoot … and she's not stupid, which can be a very annoying trait among some models." Model agent Ursula Hufnagl described Kerr as "the perfect endorsement", citing her ability to "truly sell a product".^[7]

In early February 2010, Kerr inadvertently became the subject of global headlines when David Kiely, a banker at Macquarie Bank in Sydney, was caught viewing more explicit photos of her on his computer while in the background of a colleague's live television interview with Channel 7. Within days, a clip of the interview uploaded onto YouTube received over 1.3 million hits.^[31] Eventually, Kiely was suspended and an internet campaign launched on his behalf. Kerr herself gave him her backing: "I am told there is a petition to save his job, and of course I would sign it." The incident prompted a 100% increase in the number of Google searches for Kerr's name.^[32] A few days after the incident, Macquarie Bank announced that Kiely would keep his job.^[33]

Kerr practices Nichiren Buddhism and believes "we have a responsibility to bring peace and harmony to our lives and the world." As part of her Nichiren beliefs, Kerr reportedly chants every morning and night for 20 minutes, practices yoga, meditates, and reads widely on spirituality.^[7] She maintains her physique through daily yoga, light jogging, and a diet of steamed vegetables, fresh fruit, and fish.^[34] Kerr's mother Therese has been the General Manager of KORA Organics since February 2010.^[35] The company is based in Sydney. Kerr's brother Matt also works for the company.

In 2003, Kerr began dating finance broker Adrian Camilleri. Following an Australian Securities and Investments Commission investigation, Camilleri was found guilty on five counts of fraudulent behaviour from February 2003 to February 2004. Kerr subsequently ended the relationship. A 2007 newspaper report claims that Kerr suffered financially "after taking her boyfriend's financial advice" but chose not to take legal action.^[36]

She formerly dated Jay Lyon (Brent Tuhtan), the lead singer of the band Tamarama, who has made appearances on season one of the MTV series The City. Kerr starred in Tamarama's video clip for "Everything To Me". The two began dating in 2003 and had a four year relationship, which ended on mutual terms in mid-2007.^[37]

Kerr began dating actor Orlando Bloom in late 2007.^[38] He is also an SGI member. On 12 February 2009, Kerr and Bloom participated in the "Australia Unites" fundraiser to raise money for the victims of the Australian bushfires on 7 February 2009.^[39] In 2009, the Bling Ring broke into Bloom's home. The group stole luxury brand clothing and jewelry. In this case, the ringleader allegedly wanted Kerr's Victoria's Secret lingerie.^[40] The couple's engagement was announced on 21 June 2010.^[41] Kerr released a statement on 22 July 2010, confirming that she and Bloom had married in "an intimate ceremony."^[4] On 6 January 2011, Kerr gave birth to their first child, a son named Flynn Christopher Blanchard Copeland Bloom.^[42][43][44] The middle name Christopher comes from Kerr's ex-boyfriend,^[45] Christopher Middlebrook^[46] who died in a car accident in 1998 when they were 15. The two were still dating at the time.^[47]

Kerr told readers of Australian Cosmopolitan that coconut oil was the key to her clear skin, shiny hair and trim figure, saying she ingests four teaspoons a day, either on salads, in her cooking or in her cups of green tea.^[48][49]

Sita Murt (Catalan pronunciation: [ˈsitə ˈmurt]; Igualada, Spain 1946) is a Catalan fashion designer and businesswoman. Her name Sita is a diminutive from Carmencita.^[1] As a fast-expanding women's label, Sita Murt is designed with the young, feminine, fun-loving woman in mind and has an emphasis on soft, sensual fabrics.^[2] The Sita Murt designs are marketed by the company Esteve Aguilera SA, that produces more than 200.000 jerseys and other pieces of clothing per year,^[1] serving more than 1.900 sales locations, including international department stores such as Galeries Lafayette or Tzum from Moscow.^[3] Some of her products have been used at the film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.^[4]

Sita Murt was born as the daughter of the owner of a tannery in Igualada and now belongs to the third generation of a textile industry dynasty in Igualada. At an early age, she used to collect small pieces of leather at the family factory, which she tried to use for creating pieces of clothing. Sita studied at the Sarrià School of Textile Design, managed by Ramón Folch.^[5] She married Toni Esteve Enrich, manager of the Esteve Aguilera company founded in 1924 and incorporated as SA in 1965. After some years, when her kids had grown, Sita started being involved in the design of products, mainly knitted jerseys.^[6] Sita started to create her own designs. The early death of his husband Toni in 1984 changed all plans. Sita's father-in-law decided to appoint her as the company manager, despite the reluctance of some persons due to the fact she was young and a woman.^[1] Sita worked hard and her company is today a good example for other Catalan companies.

Since 1989 the company attends many fashion shows to present the new collections, including Salons Gaudí in Barcelona, Pasarela Cibeles in Madrid, Bread & Butter in Germany and Barcelona, The Brandery in Barcelona, Premium (Berlin), Gallery (Copenhagen), Coterie (New York) and Modefabriek, Who’s Next and Paris sur Mode (Paris).^[5] The company replaced the original brand Esteve, to Sita Murt, and has opened several direct stores and an outlet store in Igualada. Sita's descendants, Toni, Iago, Isabel and Albert, have worked at the company in different positions. In 2007 the company recruited a new CEO, Jordi Balsells, formerly Sales Manager of Desigual.^[1] In 2008 the company added a line of Fashion accessories and complements^[5] and in 2010 a collection of shoes. The first direct store outside Spain was open in Paris in May 2010 sponsored by the actress Victoria Abril. Miquel Ramis was appointed CEO in 2011.
