CZ-2D Launches Tianhui-1B satellite from Jiuquan
May 6, 2012 - Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. China successfully launched its Tianhui I-02 mapping satellite from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China's Gansu province at 3:10 pm Sunday. The satellite, which was launched using a Long March 2-D carrier rocket, has entered its preset orbit. Another similar satellite, the Tianhui I, was launched into space in August 2010. The satellite, developed and produced by a company under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), will mainly be used to conduct scientific experiments, carry out land resource surveys and map territory, according to a statement released after the launch. Remote sensing information and test results from the satellite will boost both the country's scientific research and economic development, said the statement. The mission marked the 161st launch for the Long March rocket family since April 24, 1970, when a Long March-1 rocket successfully sent the country's first satellite, the Dongfanghong-1, into space.

YAOGAN-9 Remote Sensing Satellite Launch from Jiuquan
March 5, 2010 - Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. China successfully launched another Earth observation satellite from the Jiuquan space base Friday, according to state-run media outlets. The Yaogan 9 spacecraft blasted off from Jiuquan on a Long March 4C rocket at 0455 GMT (11:55 pm EST Thursday), or 12:55 pm local time. The three-stage rocket successfully delivered the secret payload to orbit, the state-owned Xinhua news agency reported. The Jiuquan launch site is located in the Gobi desert near the border between China's Gansu and Inner Mongolia provinces. Jiuquan has hosted the launches of all three Chinese human spaceflights to date. Yaogan 9 is the newest member of a series of satellites believed to harbor optical and radar military reconnaissance capabilities. The satellite "would be used to conduct scientific experiment[s], carry out surveys on land resources, forecast grain output and help with natural disaster-reduction and prevention endeavor[s]," state media reports said. But most experts believe the Yaogan series includes two variants with high-resolution electro-optical cameras and cloud-piercing radars designed to see targets through inclement weather or darkness. In the past, optical Yaogan satellites launched from Jiuquan and radar-equipped spacecraft were shot into orbit from the Taiyuan space center in northern China's Shanxi province. Before Friday's mission, analysts believed China had orbited three electro-optical Yaogan satellites and five radar ...

Tian-Hui-1 Launches atop CZ-2D from Jiuquan
August 24, 2010 - Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. A Chinese mapping satellite is circling Earth after launching on a Long March rocket Tuesday, according to official media reports. The Tianhui 1 satellite was released in a circular orbit more than 300 miles above Earth following liftoff aboard a Long March 2D booster at 0710 GMT (3:10 am EDT). The 13-story rocket took off from the Jiuquan launching base near the border of northern China's Inner Mongolia and Gansu provinces, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. Liftoff occurred at 3:10 pm Chinese time. The two-stage launch vehicle deployed Tianhui 1 on a trajectory over Earth's poles with an inclination of approximately 97 degrees. Authorities will use Tianhui 1 for scientific research, mapping and land resource surveys to help promote economic development, according to a statement on the Chinese Ministry of Defense website. The satellite was developed by a company under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., Xinhua reported. Tuesday's flight was the seventh Chinese space launch of the year and the 40th rocket to reach orbit worldwide in 2010. It was the 13th mission for a Long March 2D rocket since 1992.
