12/3/11 - Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) Delivers Weekly GOP Address On A Balanced Budget Amendment
In the Weekly Republican Address, Maine Senator Olympia Snowe explains why a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution is needed. The text of Republicans' proposed balanced budget amendment can be found here: www.scribd.com Sen. Snowe says, "In the coming days, the United States Senate will have a long overdue debate and vote on a constitutional amendment to require a balanced federal budget. And let there be no mistake, we have no greater duty than to once and for all obligate the government to live within its means and spend no more than what it takes in. I have been a longtime champion of a balanced budget amendment in both the House and Senate to prevent precisely the kind of fiscal quagmire we are enmeshed in today, as our federal government borrows an astounding 40 cents of every dollar we spend." "The fact is," she explains, "debts and deficits do matter. We have now entered what some have called an 'economic danger zone.' Our outstanding debt, which has now reached $15 trillion, has stunted economic growth, costing millions of American jobs. Just as disturbingly, the government currently pays a staggering $200 billion per year in interest to foreign countries that hold our treasury bonds...countries like China, and Russia. And that number is projected to increase to $1 trillion per year by 2021. Indeed, in the three short years since President Obama has taken office, the national debt has increased by nearly $5 trillion." Sen. Snowe continues, "[L]et's be ...

Snowe Questions Geithner on President's Budget Request
US Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine), a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, today questioned US Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner at a committee hearing on President Obama's Fiscal Year 2013 budget proposal, released yesterday. The President's budget calls projects $3.8 trillion in spending and $2.9 trillion in revenues for Fiscal Year 2013, leaving a deficit of $901 billion. It also projects that gross federal debt would climb from $16.351 trillion currently to $25.940 trillion by 2022, an increase of nearly $10 trillion. Senator Snowe specifically asked Secretary Geithner about the impact that uncertainty in the administration's policies have on our nation's entrepreneurs.

Olympia Snowe's Strange Martyrdom
Olympia Snowe's Strange Martyrdom
The retirement of Olympia Snowe, at the young (by senatorial standards) age of 65, has again dramatized the perilous condition of the Senate moderates. They have been scorned, marginalized, and hunted close to extinction. Yet the striking fact about Snowe's career is that, far from being shunted to the sidelines, she has wielded, or been given the opportunity to wield, enormous power. She has used it, on the whole, quite badly. When George W. Bush proposed a huge, regressive tax cut in 2001, Snowe, sitting at the heart of a decisive block of centrists, used her leverage to support the passage of a modestly smaller and less regressive version. When Barack Obama proposed a large fiscal stimulus in 2009, Snowe (citing fears of deficits that she had helped create) decided to shave a nice round $100 billion off his figure and call it a day. If a Gingrich administration proposed spending a trillion dollars to erect a 10- foot-tall solid-gold Winston Churchill statue on Mars, Snowe would no doubt decide, after careful deliberation, that the wise course was to trim the height down to 90 feet and perhaps use a cheaper bronze alloy in the base.

Olympia Snowe Exits in Frustration with Senate Gridlock
Olympia Snowe Exits in Frustration with Senate Gridlock
Maine Republican Olympia Snowe says the Senate spends too much time in political battle and not enough on solving problems, and more than a few of her colleagues agree. Snowe, the Senate's most liberal Republican, found herself in a familiar spot Thursday as the only member of her party to join with Democrats on a politically freighted vote. This time, it was a vote to affirm an Obama administration directive requiring employers to provide contraception coverage to their workers regardless of religious or ethical concerns. The vote, originally demanded by Republicans in a political battle that Democrats came to embrace, provided ample fodder for political ads but had nothing to do with an underlying highway bill. That measure continues to twist in the wind despite widespread support, trapped in a divisive, polarized Senate that rarely seems to legislate and often seems incapable of tackling politically challenging problems.

Senator Snowe (R-ME) Retires from Senate
Olympia Snow, the senior senator from Maine and one of the few remaining moderate Republicans in the upper chamber of congress announced she will not seek reelection this fall. The decision is a surprise as Snow had won more than 60% of the vote in each of her previous senate elections and was favored again for victory this year. She explained her move in a press release: "...Unfortunately, I do not realistically expect the partisanship of recent years in the Senate to change over the short term. So at this stage of my tenure in public service, I have concluded that I am not prepared to commit myself to an additional six years in the Senate, which is what a fourth term would entail..." "As I enter a new chapter, I see a vital need for the political center in order for our democracy to flourish and to find solutions that unite rather than divide us. It is time for change in the way we govern, and I believe there are unique opportunities to build support for that change from outside the United States Senate." The move gives a boost to the democrats who should pick up the seat in the fall. The two declared democratic candidates are the former Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap and Jon Hinck--a member of the Maine House of Representatives and founding member of the environmental group Greenpeace USA.
