Abson is a small village in South Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom
Abson is located on a minor road between the villages of Wick and Pucklechurch. It is a mainly nucleated in pattern with some additional outlying farms and settlements. The centre of the village is a small village green and the church.
Abson is part of the Church of England parish of Wick and Abson, and is within the parliamentary constituency of Thornbury and Yate.
The name Abson is a corruption of Abbots Ton - a place belonging to the Abbot. This was the Abbot of Glastonbury, as the manor of Pucklechurch (including Abson and other surrounding villages) was given to the Abbot after the murder of King Edmund at neighbouring Pucklechurch. In the 16th century the village was called Abston, and was since shortened to Abson.
Blue Lodge, one of the houses, was once the home of Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty. Whilst staying there she witnessed a man killed by a cart and this was incorporated into the novel.

Brislington West is a council ward of the city of Bristol, England. It covers the western part of Brislington, Arnos Vale, Kensington Park and St Annes.
Brislington is one of the largest suburbs of Bristol, and it is split into two sections for the purposes of local government; Brislington West and Brislington East. Notable places in the western section include Brislington Enterprise College and the HTV studios.
Arnos Vale is an area near the centre of the city. It includes the historic Arnos Vale Cemetery, which occupies 45 acres (180,000 m2) in the neighbouring Knowle ward. The cemetery, closed in 1998, it has been kept open by volunteers since. Arno's Vale Cemetery is part of the old Arno's Court Estate. It is one of only four estates in Bristol that still have the original estate house standing (now known as Arno's Manor Hotel). The remaining estate land includes the cemetery, the hotel and Arno's Court Park. The park, which has views across Bristol, connects two geographically separate areas in Bristol (Knowle & Brislington), separated by a very steep hill within the park.

Ashley Down

Ashley Down is an area in the north of Bristol. It lies on high ground east of Bishopston, north of St Andrews and St Werburghs, west of Muller Road and south of Horfield. The main artery is Ashley Down Road. It is in the Ashley ward of Bristol City Council.
Ashley Down was developed in Victorian times. A number of large detached villas were built on Ashley Down Road. Smaller terraced houses were built in the north of the district.
In 1845 George Müller entered into a contract for the purchase of 7 acres (28,000 m²) of ground at £120 per acre (£0.03/m²) for the accommodation, feeding, clothing and education of 300 destitute and orphan children. On 18 June 1849 the orphans transferred to the new building, designed by local architect Thomas Foster. By the time he died in 1898, Müller had received £1,500,000 through prayer and had over 10,000 children in his care.
The orphanage continued on the Ashley Down site until 1958. Orphan Houses 2, 4 and 5 are now owned by Bristol City College, while No 3 House (in which Müller lived for the last few years of his life and in which he died), on the other side of Ashley Down Road was converted into private flats in 2007. No 1 House is currently (2010) being redeveloped as flats.

Ashton Gate

Ashton Gate is a suburb of Bristol, United Kingdom, in the Southville ward of Bristol City Council. A toll house at the western end of North Street still survives and indicates the origin of the area's name as a gate on the road to Ashton (now known as Long Ashton). Once part of the estate of the Smyth family of Ashton Court, the area had ironworks and collieries in the nineteenth century, also a tobacco factory and a brewery. There is still some manufacturing industry and retail parks and in 2003 the Bristol Beer Factory recommenced brewing in the former brewery site.Ashton Gate railway station closed in 1964.
Major attractions in the area include Ashton Gate stadium, the home of professional football team Bristol City F.C., the shopping and leisure facilities of North Street, the Tobacco Factory theatre. Ashton Gate primary school serves the local pre-teen population.
Whitemead House multi-storey council flats on Duckmoor Road, which overlook the Bristol City football stadium, are notable for being the exterior filming location of the tower block where Delboy and Rodney lived in the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses; these flats were used as their home's exterior after 1988.

Aust
Aust is a small village in South Gloucestershire, England, the historical site of the eastern terminal of the Aust Ferry crossing route over the River Severn between England and Wales, believed to have been used in Roman times as a continuation of Icknield Street which led from Eastern England via Cirencester to Chepstow, Caerleon & to St David's. It is today near the eastern end of the Severn Bridge, built in 1966 to carry the M4 motorway (now the M48 motorway) over the river estuary to Wales. The village has been divided by both the motorway and dual carriageways which now dominate the local landscape. It has a chapel, a church and a public house. Formerly there was a pond near the chapel, since removed to make way for the motorway. There is a large area of farmland on the river bank, which is often flooded due to the high tides of the River. A tunnel runs under the River Severn from Aust to Beachley carrying electric cables. Aust lies at grid reference ST573891.
The civil parish of Aust also includes the villages of Elberton and Littleton-upon-Severn. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 518.

Barton Hill is an area of Bristol, just to the east of the city centre and Bristol Temple Meads railway station.
It includes residential, retail and industrial premises and is crossed by major roads, railway tracks and the feeder canal leading to Bristol Harbour.
Barton was a manor just outside Bristol mentioned in the Domesday Book as Bertune apud Bristov, and later in 1220 as Berton Bristoll. In Saxon and early Norman times the manor was held by the king, and was known as Barton Regis. The manor gave its name to the hundred of Barton Regis. Sloping ground at the southern end of the hundred, leading down to St Philip's Marsh, became known as Barton Hill.
Great Western Cotton Mill on Great Western Lane was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the early 19th century. Great Western Cotton factory opened in 1838 and closed in 1925. From a plan of 1839 the sheds are seen to have contained up to 1600 looms. The main spinning mill was demolished in 1968.

Bedminster is a district of Bristol, England. It lies on the south side of the city, and was in Somerset until 1831. It is also the name of a council ward, which includes the central part of the district and some other areas.
The eastern part of Bedminster is known as Windmill Hill. To the south of Bedminster is high ground known as Bedminster Down, now generally considered a separate suburb.
Bedminster was once a small town in Somerset. The town's origins seem to be Roman, centred around the present East Street and West Street. Finds here have been interpreted as an enclosed rural farmstead, dating between the 2nd and 4th centuries, but with possible Iron Age origins. The river Malago, which runs through Bedminster to join the Avon, was an early Christian place for baptisms — the old word for which, beydd may be the origin of Bedminster’s name. Substantial Roman remains have also been found at Bedminster Down, including plaster, tesserae (hence mosaic floors), sandstone roof tiles, coins and pottery, hence the site is thought to be a Roman Villa occupied by the Romano-British.

Bishopston, Bristol
Bishopston the name of both a council ward of the city of Bristol, England, and a suburb of the city that falls within that ward. Bishopston is situated around the Gloucester Road, the main northern arterial road in the city. The ward includes St Bonaventures and Ashley Down parishes, as well as part of Horfield. It is twinned with KV Kuppam in Tamilnadu, India.
Bishopston is in the Bristol West parliamentary constituency and elects two City Councillors. Its MP is Stephen Williams and its councillors are Beverly Knott and Dr David Willingham. All three are Liberal Democrats.
Named after the bishop of the local diocese who controversially sold off the church's land to private developers in the early 19th century. The sale was even raised as an issue in the House of Commons. The parish of Bishopston was then created in July 1862 with a population of 1300 and expanding to 9140 in the Census 1901. In the Census 2001 Bishopston registered a resident population of 11,996. The district is part of the Bristol built-up area, having been swallowed by the growing city, running directly into the surrounding districts of Redland, Ashley Down, Horfield and Henleaze.

As well as the suburb of Bishopsworth, the ward contains the areas of Bedminster Down, Highridge and Withywood.
Bishopsworth is a largely residential suburb in south Bristol, England, which was formerly a civil parish.
The name may originally have been Bishport.
In 1928 the parish of Bedminster Down was created from the north of Bishopsworth in response to the development of the area. The parishes of Hartcliffe and Withywood were separated off more recently.
Bishopsworth has an estimated population of 11,444 people (2001 Census). Its municipal services are run by Bristol City Council whilst its local health services are managed by the Bristol South and West Primary Care Trust.
Local facilities include shops and pubs, a public library and swimming pool.
The first church in Bishopsworth was a small chapel dedicated to St Peter and St Paul built under an arrangement in 1194 between Robert Arthur, lord of the manor, and George de Dunster, prebend of Bedminster. The agreement provided for a chaplain to visit from Bedminster on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. This provision continued until dissolution in 1540. The chapel was converted into three cottages which stood until the Corporation demolished them in 1961 to make way for a swimming pool. people living in bishoph is 27,442 people.

Bower Ashton

Bower Ashton is a small district in south west Bristol on the western boundary with North Somerset, lying within the Southville ward, approximately two miles from the city centre. Ashton Court estate, a 850-acre (3.4 km2) recreational area owned by Bristol City Council lies just to the north, the Long Ashton by-pass (Brunel Way, the A370) to the south and the River Avon to the east.
The area is now mainly residential but also includes the School of Creative Arts of the University of the West of England, Ashton Park Secondary School, which is a specialist Sports College and the Horse and Dog section of Avon and Somerset Constabulary as well as about 180 allotments in 5 different areas. Clifton Bridge and Ashton Gate railway stations are both now closed, but there is some pressure to reopen the latter as part of a rapid transit link from Portishead.
Bower Ashton was historically a hamlet in the parish of Long Ashton in Somerset. In medieval times the area was owned by St Augustine's Abbey, but following the Dissolution the Smyth estate was established by John Smyth, a merchant from Small Street in the city, in the 16th century. In the 19th century Sir John Henry Greville Smyth rebuilt Ashton Court Mansion along with a now demolished Dower house on the present site of the School of Creative Arts. Maps of that era show a rope walk, Frayne's Colliery and Ashton Vale Iron works, scene of many tragic accidents, adjacent to the Portishead railway line. It appears from Bristol City Council documents that an Iron Foundry was in operation in the area until the 1940s.

Brentry

Brentry is a suburb of north Bristol, England, between Henbury and Southmead which is spread along the southern edge of the Avonmouth-London railway line.
The boundaries of Brentry are not well defined. The settlement grew around the junction of two roads, where a public house, the Old Crow, has long been established. The north-south road, Passage Road (now the A4018), was a turnpike road from Bristol to South Wales via New Passage or the Old Passage at Aust Ferry. When the new Filton By-Pass (now part of the M5 motorway) was opened in 1962, the route became an arterial road linking the new road to the centre of Bristol. The east-west route (B4057) is now of only local importance, but in the 1930s it carried A38 traffic by-passing Bristol. The through route was cut by the runway for the giant Bristol Brabazon aircraft built in 1949.
The area east of the junction was developed in the 20th century, and Brentry is now sometimes considered to extend as far as the Filton Golf Couse, south of Filton Aerodrome, including an area east of Charlton Road known as Charlton Mead, named from the former hamlet of Charlton.

Brislington is an area in the south east of the city of Bristol, England. It is on the edge of Bristol and 10 miles (16 km) from Bath. The Froome, locally nowadays called the Brislington Brook, runs through the area in the woodlands of Nightingale Valley. Brislington houses the HTV West Studios on Bath Road and this is situated next to the historic Arnos Vale Cemetery which is currently undergoing restoration after a lengthy public and newspaper campaign. The name of the town is sometimes inaccurately thought to be a pun reflecting the fact that it is a neighbourhood in Bristol similar to Islington in London.
The parish of Brislington was part of the Keynsham Hundred,
Brislington is also near to the site of the now demolished chapel of St. Anne's-in-the Wood (actually located in nearby St Anne's), erected by one of the Lords de la Warr, whose family held the manor of Brislington from the late 12th to the mid-16th century; in the 15th century the chapel was a place of pilgrimage, visited by Henry VII). After the chapel was demolished following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, a house called "St. Ann's" was built at the site by Thomas Avery in the mid-17th century. During the 18th and 19th century Brislington contained many country homes due to its reputation as a picturesque country village. By the early 20th century it was encompassed by Bristol, and much urban housing and industry developed.

Bristol Harbour
Bristol Harbour is the harbour in the city of Bristol, England. The harbour covers an area of 70 acres (28.3 ha). It has existed since the 13th century but was developed into its current form in the early 19th century by installing lock gates on a tidal stretch of the River Avon in the centre of the city and providing a tidal by-pass for the river. It is called a floating harbour as the water level remains constant and it is not affected by the state of the tide on the river.
Netham Lock in east Bristol is the upstream limit of the harbour. Beyond the lock is a junction: on one arm the navigable River Avon continues upstream to Bath, and on the other arm is the tidal River Avon. The first 1 mile (1.6 km) of the floating harbour, downstream from Netham Lock, is an artificial channel known as the Feeder Canal, while the tidal River Avon follows its original route. Between Bristol Temple Meads railway station and Hotwells, the harbour and the River Avon run parallel at a distance of no more than 0.65 miles (1.0 km) apart. At Bristol Temple Meads railway station, the floating harbour occupies the original bed of the River Avon and meanders through Bristol city centre, Canon's Marsh and Hotwells. To the south, the tidal River Avon flows through an artificial channel known as the New Cut. This separation of the floating harbour and the tidal River Avon reduces currents and silting in the harbour and prevents flooding. At Hotwells, the floating harbour rejoins the tidal River Avon, via a series of locks, and flows into the Avon Gorge.

The home ground of Brislington F.C. lies in Brislington East, as does St. Brendan's Sixth Form College. It also has a McDonalds restaurant, and a 6-acre (24,000 m2) large nature reserve, called Eastwood farm, as well as a Co-op, and The Good Intent pub.
Broomhill, sometimes spelled Broom Hill, is an area in Bristol to the north of Brislington. The area is adjacent to the River Avon and crossed by the Great Western Railway, and some sidings, just east of Temple Meads Station. The railway passes through a tunnel which was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1840 which is a listed building. It is served by bus service 1.

Cabot is a council ward that covers the centre of Bristol. It gets its name from the Cabot Tower - a memorial tower on Brandon Hill that was built to commemorate John Cabot's voyage and "discovery" of North America.
This ward contains the whole of the medieval city and many of the oldest surviving buildings. Cabot includes Bristol's Docks, the City Centre and the University of Bristol. Cabot has at least 17 churches, a cathedral, a synagogue, four museums, three hospitals, two theatres, two concert halls, and art galleries and cinemas.

Charlton, Bristol

Charlton was a tything in the ancient parish, and later civil parish, of Henbury. In 1870 it had a population of 425. In 1935 the village was transferred to the civil parish of Almondsbury.
The B4057 road ran through the village. Charlton had several farm houses, a public house called the Carpenters Arms, a post office, several large houses and a few cottages.
In the late 1940s nearly all of the village was demolished to make way for an extension of the main runway at Filton Airfield, now Filton Aerodrome, to accommodate take-offs of the giant Bristol Brabazon prop-driven airliner. Just before demolition, many of the former residents were rehoused in council housing on Patchway Estate.
Although the Brabazon project was cancelled in 1953, the extended runway proved very useful later, when Vulcan V bombers were dispersed to Filton during the Cuban Missile Crisis and when Concorde supersonic airliners took off.

Chittening

Chittening is an industrial estate 2 miles north of Avonmouth, Bristol, England on the A403 road, near the River Severn. It lies within the Bristol city boundary.
Chittening was once a farm, historically in the parish of Henbury. In the First World War a munitions factory was built on the site, where cylinders and shells were filled with chloropicrin and, from June 1918, with mustard gas.
The industrial estate (or "trading estate") developed after the war, under the management of the Port of Bristol Authority. In 1951 a factory producing carbon black was built next to the estate, and operated until 2008 when its closure was announced.
Between 1917 and 1964 Chittening was served by Chittening Platform railway station.
Chittening was first recorded in 1658 as Chitnend. The name apparently comes from the Middle English chitten ende, meaning "end [of a parish or estate] where there are the young of animals".
Chittening Warth is an area of salt marsh beside the Severn Estuary, just to the west of the industrial estate. At low tide the mudflats there are visited by large numbers of birds, including Dunlin, Eurasian Curlew, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Common Redshank and Whimbrel. In some winters there are large populations of field voles, which attract Short-eared Owls.

Running down the length of the ward is Whiteladies Road, which includes many shops and offices, as well as some houses. The ABC Cinema on Whiteladies Road was converted into offices and gymnasium in the 1990s but there are now plans to re-open it as a cinema.. Just off Whiteladies Road, the Clifton Lido was built in 1850 but closed to the public in 1990; it was redeveloped and opened again to the public in November 2008.
Bristol City Council changed the layout of Whiteladies Road in 2011-12, affecting traffic and pedestrians and causing controversy amongst local campaigners.

Coalpit Heath

Coalpit Heath is a small village in the parish of Westerleigh, South Gloucestershire, England, south of Yate and east of Frampton Cotterell in South Gloucestershire.
Due to the expansion of Coalpit Heath and the neighbouring villages in the late 20th century, the borders of Coalpit Heath with Frampton Cotterell have become vague. The village contains three Pubs, one post office, a 27-hole golf course (The Kendleshire) and numerous local stores. The village also includes a parish church (St. Saviour's), and a local primary school, (The Manor CofE VC Primary school).
It was founded as a coal mining settlement. One pit was on Frog Lane at ST 685 815 (to the north east of the village). Other mines operated between Mays Hill and Nibley to the north and at Ram Hill and Henfield to the south. These were served by a railway line, closed some decades ago and no longer visible on the ground. In 1949 the coal ran out, and since then it has become a sought after place to live, with fields and easy accommodation. The South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group (SGMRG) has done a lot of research into the history of mining in the area.

Coombe Dingle is a suburb of Bristol, England, centred near where the Hazel Brook tributary of the River Trym emerges from a limestone gorge bisecting the Blaise Castle Estate to join the main course of the Trym. Historically this area formed part of the parish of Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire, and is now part of Kingsweston ward of the city of Bristol. South of Coombe Dingle is Sea Mills; to the north is Kingsweston Hill; to the west are Kings Weston House and Shirehampton Park; and to the east, Henbury Golf Club and Westbury on Trym proper.
The inhabited place appears simply as Combe, Coomb or Coombe, meaning 'short bowl-shaped valley', in documents from the 13th century onwards and on early maps. The name applied to Coombe Farm and Coombe House on the eastern side of the confluence of the Hazel Brook and the Trym, not where the modern suburb lies. This area later became noted for its cherry orchards, commemorated in a modern house-name, and a nursery. Strictly speaking, Coombe Dingle was the wooded narrow valley through which the Trym passes south-west of the farm and house to flow southwards through Sea Mills to the River Avon. The name of the narrow valley was borrowed for the new development consisting mostly of private housing built to the west of the Trym in the 1920s and 1930s on an area called Boulton's (or Bowden's) Fields. It was and remains a desirable area to live. Near the western edge is Haig Close, a small development of houses originally built for ex-servicemen in 1929 on land donated from the Kingsweston Estate by Philip Napier Miles, though this is generally said to be in Sea Mills.

It is a cosmopolitan residential area with large old houses (many of which are used as hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation, or divided into flats) and a selection of small independent shops. It also contains the comprehensive Cotham School (formerly Cotham Grammar School).
The top of Saint Michael's Hill in Cotham was the historical city limits of Bristol, and the traditional location for hangings. Between 1555 and 1557, three Marian martyrs were burned to death here for their religious beliefs. The gallows form one quadrant of the crest of the local Rugby club, Cotham Park RFC.

Cribbs Causeway
Cribbs Causeway is a road in South Gloucestershire, England, just north of Bristol, which has given its name to a large out-of-town shopping centre, including retail parks and an enclosed shopping centre known as The Mall. Cribbs Causeway is situated west of Patchway, although in the civil parish of Almondsbury.
The road runs from the northern edge of Bristol at Henbury to a point just beyond the M5 junction 17. It now forms parts of the A4018 and B4055. The primary access routes to the shopping centre are the A4018 from Bristol, the M5 motorway and the Patchway bypass road.
The Hazel Brook rises at Cribbs Causeway, flowing southwards through Blaise Castle estate, before joining the River Trym.
The name of the road is often said to owe its name to Tom Cribb, a famous bare-knuckle boxer from the Bristol area. However, this was proved wrong in the 1960s by the discovery of a map showing the current name dated to four years prior to his 1781 birth. The book's author goes on to speculate that the true origin of the name may be from Crybe's dwelling (Crybe being a personal name), or from crib – a manger or hovel. But all that we can truly glean from this is that the causeway - i.e. the Roman road - was named for a family with the surname Cribb (which may or may not have been closely related to the boxer's family: he was from Hanham on the opposite side of Bristol). This local family was probably also commemorated in the smallholding called Crybescroft which existed in Henbury in 1281.

It is said that there is a tunnel which runs under the church yard, across the field and eventually comes out at Abbotside. The tunnel is believed to have been used in Tudor times during the reign of Henry VIII as a safe passage by monks from the abbey. At the other end of the village towards Yate, there is a small lane called Cowship Lane. In the village there is a post office, garage and a local pub called The Royal Oak.

Doynton

In Doynton there is a pub, The Cross House, there is also a park and playing field. In the middle of the village there is a hall which is used for meetings and entertainment purposes. The church in Doynton has been noted for its herringbone masonry (around 12th century) on the south wall. The River Boyd also runs through the northern end of the village. Doynton and the Boyd were immortalised by the poet and fisherman John Dennys, Squire of Pucklechurch, in his poem "The Secrets of Angling", the earliest English poetical treatise on fishing, published in 1613:

Doynton is a picturesque village situated on the lower slopes of the Cotswolds, it's king Samuel Luke Bond resides over his people in a manner most regal and has his pick of the local virgins. Approximately two miles south-east of Pucklechurch. The River Boyd passes through the northern part of Doynton, and the village is surrounded by rich pastures and varied topography. The village is essentially linear in character with development lining the four main roads into the village.

Easter Compton
Easter Compton is a village in the civil parish of Almondsbury, South Gloucestershire, England. It is situated at the bottom of a hill (known as Blackhorse Hill) near Junction 17 of the M5 Motorway on the B4055.
The village is only 1.5 miles away from the busy Mall shopping and leisure complex at Cribbs Causeway. There is a pub (The Fox), a post office (open Monday/Wednesday/Friday in the mornings and based in the village hall), Methodist chapel, and a playing field (including skate park). It is served by the church of Compton Greenfield, as well as the chapel in the village. The B4055 road leads to Pilning, Redwick and Severn Beach.
The National Cycle Network runs through the village on its way to the Severn Bridge by which it is possible to enter Wales on foot or bicycle. There are some walks locally which give great views of the surrounding country side, especially from the top of Spaniorum Hill Each year in June, the village holds a carnival. The main road through the village is closed and the carnival procession finishes on the playing field where the floats are judged and various entertainments and stalls are available. In 2006, due to insurance restrictions, the carnival, previously drawn by lorries and vans provided by a local haulage firm, was restricted to non-motorised transport and the traditional throwing of water and flour was forbidden.

Emersons Green is a residential area on the northern outskirts of Bristol, England. It was developed from farming land during the 1990s and early 21st century, and sits between the historic villages of Mangotsfield and Downend. Emersons Green lies within the Unitary Authority of South Gloucestershire, and is part of the Parliamentary Constituency of Kingswood.
The area was selected for development as part of the Avon County Structure Plan in 1985. Formerly green belt land bordering Mangotsfield and Downend, it was proposed to develop the area that now constitutes Emersons Green, with the green belt area being moved outwards. This area would also contain parts of the extensions to the A4174 Avon ring road.
Coal was mined from the area during the 19th century. To the south there is a quarry, which has been reactivated.

Frampton Cotterell is a village and parish, in South Gloucestershire, south west England on the River Frome. The village is continuous with Winterbourne to the south-west and Coalpit Heath to the east. The parish borders Iron Acton to the north and Westerleigh to the south-east, the large town of Yate is three miles away. The village is 8 miles north-east of the city of Bristol.
The village has evolved from a once rural Gloucestershire village, to a partial dormitory village for Bristol. The population in the 2001 census was around 6,800 and is increasing .
Very little archaeological work has taken place in the Frampton Cotterell area so knowledge of the area prior to the Anglo-Saxon arrival is limited. Local historians tend to use field names and street names to work out the distant history of the village. It is believed from place names that there were two settlements in the area in the Roman times. One centred on the group of shops at the Church Road/Frampton End Road junction, where the name Dullage survived until the 1940s. The second was in rural farmland west of Cogmill in between Frampton Cotterell and Iron Acton, here several fields held the name Chessolds from the old English 'ceastel' meaning 'a heap of stones'.

Frenchay is a suburb of Bristol, England, to the north east of the city, but located mainly in South Gloucestershire and the Civil Parish of Winterbourne.
Frenchay was first recorded in 1257 as Fromscawe and later as Fromeshaw, meaning the wood on the Frome.
The suburb is situated between the B4058 road, which runs parallel to the M32 motorway, and the wooded River Frome valley.
Frenchay's largest place of worship is the Anglican church of John the Baptist, adjacent to the large village common, which is overlooked by period houses. Also overlooking the common is the village school which dates from 1842. The village also contains a Catholic church, a Quaker Meeting House and a Unitarian chapel.
The main campus of University of the West of England is named Frenchay Campus, and there is a business park nearby.
Frenchay is also home to Frenchay Hospital, greatly expanded during World War II for the US Army, which treated wounded soldiers returning from the D-Day landings in Normandy. Frenchay is still one of Bristol's major hospitals. Its facilities have been greatly extended in recent years, although wartime buildings are still much in evidence. The hospital is currently under threat of closure.

Frome Vale (ward)

Frome Vale is one of thirty-five city council wards in Bristol, England, and is named after the River Frome. It contains the suburbs of Broomhill (not to be confused with the Broomhill in the Brislington ward) and Fishponds, as well as a small part of Frenchay. The northern and eastern boundaries of the ward border the South Gloucestershire areas of Downend and Frenchay.
Notable places in the ward include Snuff Mills, and the Glenside and St Matthias campuses of the University of the West of England.
Broomhill is an area of Bristol that lies to the south of the M32 motorway, between Stapleton and Frenchay. The area is home to the clubhouse of DRG Stapleton Football Club, who play in the Gloucestershire County League, however the pitch lies across the border in South Gloucestershire.
Fishponds is an outer urban area to the east of the English city of Bristol. It is approximately three miles from the City centre. It has two large Victorian era parks; Eastville Park and Vassell's Park (formerly the Vassell's Family estate). The River Frome runs through both parks, with the Frome Valley Walkway running alongside it. A restored mill can be found at Snuff Mills near the Vassells Park end of the river. It has retained its original waterwheel which can still be seen and heard turning today.

Gaunt's Earthcott

Gaunts Earthcott is a hamlet in South Gloucestershire, England, consisting of a ruined chapel, a few houses and two farms. Green Farm and Court Farm. The village is located approximately 2+1⁄2 miles (4 km) from Rudgeway and the A38 road and about the same distance from Frampton Cotterell and Winterbourne. The village is located close to the interchange between the M4 and M5 motorways. There is no real industry as such and the main economic activity in the area is farming.
Gaunt's Earthcott should not be confused with Earthcott, a couple of miles away on the B4059 road between the A38 and Yate.

Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire originally included the then "small town" of Bristol. The "local" rural community moved to the port city, (as Bristol was to become) and Bristol's population growth accelerated during the industrial revolution. Bristol became part of the administrative County of Avon in 1974.

Golden Hill, Bristol

Golden Hill is an inner suburb of Bristol, England, lying east of Horfield Common and north-east of Bishopston. Redland and Henleaze are nearby. The housing is mainly in private ownership and was built in the 1920s and 30s.
Bristol Rovers practise on the football pitch, and Redland High School for Girls owns the fields.
A large Tesco store was built in 1993 on an adjacent green-field site, which had been for many years the playing fields of Bristol Grammar School. Plans for expansion are currently being reviewed.
A second playing field is located in Golden Hill on Wimbledon Road. This is used by Golden Hill Sports Ltd (registered charity 1118954), which runs the YMCA Cricket Club and Golden Hill Sports Football Club. In addition, the charity also organises children's activity days during the school holidays as well as a number of social events throughout the year.

Greenbank is a small informal district in the city of Bristol, England nestling between Easton to the south, Eastville to the west and north west, Fishponds, Clay Bottom and Rose Green to the north, and Whitehall to the east. It is however part of the official Easton Ward for elections. The area is mainly one of 1890s terraced housing with some present millennium housing on the north eastern edge of the cemetery.
The Bristol & Bath Railway Path forms the north eastern boundary of Greenbank and provides a traffic free route not only the two miles into Bristol but also 13 miles to Bath along one of the most scenic non-traffic cycle routes in the country. The Path is seen as being a valuable public asset by the people of Greenbank and other adjoining areas, with a 2008 campaign to stop it being used as a bus route garnering much local support. The Path also provides a valuable green haven in the form of a linear park in what is a very densely populated part of Bristol.

Hambrook

Hambrook is a village in South Gloucestershire, England, just outside the outskirts of the city of Bristol. It lies between the two larger communities of Winterbourne and Frenchay and is part of the Civil Parish of Winterbourne. Though Hambrook has become a commuter village with the M4 running through it, the village has retained a largely peaceful, semi-rural appearance despite its proximity to Bristol, to the large town of Bradley Stoke and to the shopping centre at Cribbs Causeway.
Hambrook lies at the south-western foot of Winterbourne Hill. The village has woodlands and fields leading down from Winterbourne. The village's most distinctive feature is its common (or village green) which locals refer to as 'Hambrook' or 'Whiteshill Common' in light of its close proximity to the hamlet of Whiteshill. Site of the Civil Parish's war memorial and the village's primary school, with cosy cottages flanking it on either side and offering views of Winterbourne Hill, Hambrook Common makes a peaceful retreat. Cricket attracts crowds here in the summer months.

Hanham
Hanham is a village on the eastern outskirts of Bristol, England, situated on the A431 between Bristol, Bath and Keynsham. It is in the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire. It became a civil parish on April 1, 2003.
The village is reputed to have one of the oldest public houses in Britain, The Blue Bowl - thought to have started life as a tavern for Roman soldiers. There is no firm evidence for the age of the pub but Roman coins have been discovered nearby and St Lyte wrote in 1480 that it was an old established hostelry.
It is the site of Hanham Lock on the River Avon.
George Whitefield first preached in the open air on Hanham Mount to Kingswood miners in 1739. Because he was soon to go to Georgia he introduced John Wesley to his congregation and to open air preaching, a great novelty in 18th century Britain. A replica pulpit was erected in honour of this, as well as commemorative plaques.
For the 1950s Festival of Britain an 80 ft high beacon was erected in honour of Baptists who suffered persecution during the period 1662 to 1689. In 2007 it was replaced by a newer, taller and brighter beacon, the former one having been considered unsafe.

There were 3 manors in the parish of Stoke Gifford. The Giffards and Berkeleys held Stoke and Walls. Harry Stoke was a separate manor held by Aldred in Saxon times, Theobald in Norman times and the Blount and De Filton families in mediaeval times. The Berkeleys bought it in the l6th century.
One of the last coal mines in the Bristol Coalfield was at Harry Stoke. The mine was a drift mine, begun in 1952. Bad roof conditions made the mine uneconomic, and it closed in 1963.

Hengrove

Hengrove is a suburb and council ward of Bristol, England, situated between Whitchurch, Knowle and Bishopsworth, running along both dual carriageways, Wells Road (A37) and Airport Road (A4174). It consists mainly of working to middle class terrace houses. It contains an infant, primary and secondary school. The area holds the long-disused Whitchurch Airport, now mostly converted to out-of-town entertainment (pubs, cinema etc.). The area of Knowle it adjoins is known as Knowle West. It is served by bus services 51 and 52.
Hengrove Park is the largest urban regeneration site in Bristol. In 2001 it was the temporary home to the Ashton Court Festival. It is the location of the new South Bristol Community Hospital and the new Hengrove Skills Academy.

Horfield

Horfield is a suburb of the city of Bristol, in southwest England. It lies on Bristol's northern edge, its border with Filton marking part of the boundary between Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Bishopston lies directly to the south. Monks Park and Golden Hill are to the west. Lockleaze and Ashley Down are on the eastern fringe. The Gloucester Road (A38) runs north/south through the suburb.
Horfield is also the name of a ward for Bristol City Council. The ward includes Monks Park and Southmead Hospital, but does not include the southern part of Horfield, including Horfield Common and Horfield Prison, which is in Bishopston ward.
The name 'Horfield' is Anglo-Saxon in origin, meaning 'Filthy open land' (Old English 'horu' and 'feld').
Horfield was a parish in the hundred of Berkeley in Gloucestershire, which included Bishopston, Golden Hill, Lockleaze and part of Ashley Down.
Historically, the area had a reputation as a lawless place because Horfield Wood was the haunt of thieves and vagrants. The area remained rural until the early 19th century.

Hotwells

Hotwells is a district of the English port city of Bristol. It is located to the south of and below the high ground of Clifton, and directly to the north of the Floating Harbour. The southern entrance to the Avon Gorge, which connects those docks to the sea, lies at the western end of Hotwells. The eastern end of the area is at the roundabout where Jacobs Well Road meets Hotwell Road. Hotwells forms part of the city ward of Clifton.
Hotwells is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Bristol city centre lying just north of the Floating Harbour and the river Avon. To the north and some 300 feet (91 m) higher is the suburb of Clifton. Much of the present built up area was originally a salt marsh known as Rownham Mead. Nearly half of Rownham Mead was excavated in the early 19th century to construct the Cumberland Basin, which forms part of the entrance lock system of the city docks. The west of the area marks the beginning of the Portway road which connects Bristol to Avonmouth, passing under the Clifton Suspension Bridge which lies about 0.25 miles (0.40 km) north of Hotwells.

Kemble Airport
Cotswold Airport (ICAO: EGBP) (formerly Kemble Airfield) is a private general aviation airport, near the village of Kemble in Gloucestershire, England. Located 4.5 NM (8.3 km; 5.2 mi) southwest of Cirencester, it was built as a Royal Air Force (RAF) station and was known as RAF Kemble. The Red Arrows aerobatics team was based there until 1983. It is home to privately-owned ex-military aircraft such as the Hawker Hunter, BAC Jet Provost, Folland Gnat and English Electric Canberra (operated by Delta Jets), and is used for the storage and recycling of retired airliners, as well as flying schools, clubs and industry.
The Cotswold Air Show and a Battle of Britain Weekend (both held over two days) are held there each year and the airfield is a venue for flying and vehicle rallies.
Cotswold Airport is in a good position for flying training as it is clear of controlled airspace allowing free movement for training aircraft. It is also centrally positioned between Cheltenham and Gloucester and Swindon, with good road and rail links.

Only really the 16th, 22nd (and parts of the 20th & 21st) holes are included in the settlement, the clubhouse and the rest of the course being in Henfield.

Kingsweston (ward)
Kingsweston is a ward of the city of Bristol. The three districts in the ward are Coombe Dingle, Lawrence Weston and Sea Mills. The ward takes its name from the old district of Kings Weston (usually spelt in two words), now generally considered part of Lawrence Weston.
Coombe Dingle is a suburb of Bristol, centred on where the River Trym emerges from a gorge passing through the Blaise Castle Estate. A desirable area, the private housing was mainly built in the 1920s and 1930s. Further downstream is Sea Mills. There was a tin Methodist church which was demolished in the mid-1990s. There are still some photos of it on tin Tabernacles. It was a small gothic building of the 1890s.
Lawrence Weston is a post war housing estate in north west Bristol between Henbury and Shirehampton. It is bounded in the east by the Blaise Castle estate and woods. It is situated directly beneath the wooded Kingsweston Hill. The industrial complex and port of Avonmouth is a mile or so away, across the flood plain. The residential area was built in the late 1940s/early 1950s. Originally council owned, much of the housing stock is now in private hands. It is known as "El Dub" to its inhabitants. The row of shops in Ridingleaze has been revamped and each shop is now adorned with a mural.

Knowle is a district and council ward in the south of Bristol. It is bordered by Filwood Park to the west, Brislington to the east, Whitchurch and Hengrove to the south and Totterdown to the north.
Broadwalk shopping centre provides the majority of the shopping facilities. The Wells Road runs through Knowle from Totterdown to Whitchurch. Broadwalk is a tree lined boulevard that heads westwards towards Filwood. Redcatch Park is the main green space with football pitches, children's play area, a MUGA (Multi Games Area), tennis courts and a croquet club. This is supported by The Friends of Redcatch Park, a group of local residents helping Bristol City Council to enhance and protect this valuable local open space and who organise events in the park for local people. The library has recently reopened and is accessible from the roof car park of, as well as within, Broadwalk shopping centre.
There are many community groups that operate in and around the Knowle area. Redcatch Community Association run the Redcatch Centre in Redcatch Road, on the boundary of Redcatch Park - a valuable resource for a large number of community groups and private and public events. There are numerous local clubs and groups including The Knowle and Totterdown Local History Group, Redcatch Rollers (Short Mat Bowling), Redcatch Tea Dance, and Redcatch Art Club who all meet at Redcatch Community Centre. Knowle Community Association also run a community centre in The Square, Knowle Park with various activities including Knowle East Youth Club. Other organisations are Broad Walk Neighbourhood Watch, which acts as a portal for the local community of Knowle and those in and around Broad Walk, and the St John Ambulance Knowle & Totterdown Division (www.sja.org.uk/kt).

Little Sodbury is an English village in South Gloucestershire, located between Chipping Sodbury, to the West, Old Sodbury to the South, Badminton, and the A46 road to the East and Horton and Hawkesbury Upton, to the north.
The "manor of Sodbury" comprises the nearby Chipping Sodbury and Old Sodbury: it is distinct from that of Little Sodbury.
St Adeline's Church was built in 1859 by William James.
Little Sodbury Manor is originally 15th century, the home of Sir John Walsh who employed William Tyndale as chaplain and tutor to his grandchildren in 1522-3; by tradition he began his translation of the Bible in his bedroom here. The manor retains the porch and Great Hall, with a timber roof resting on corbels carved as shield-bearing angels, of the fifteenth-century courtyard house. The house fell into disrepair in the nineteenth century, but was restored by architect Sir Harold Brakspear for Lord Grosvenor and later Baron de Tuyll.

Little Stoke
Little Stoke is a suburb of north Bristol, situated in South Gloucestershire, England. Surrounded by Patchway, Stoke Gifford and Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke, in the middle, is often forgotten. Home to Patchway railway station, a minor stop on the railway network, the railway line also separates Little Stoke from the large Rolls Royce factories in nearby Filton. A road tunnel (under the railway) linking the two, has seen many accidents over the years, due to it being low in height and very narrow.
Little Stoke is also home to a large playing field and a community centre. Near the railway arch are some local shops including a Post Office.
Many of the road names are linked to engines produced in the 1950s and 1960s at what is now the Rolls-Royce factory. The area originally consisted of many council houses and post WWII prefabs. In recent years, some of the houses have been renovated; however, some owners have kept the older style of house.
Little Stoke has one Public House, The Stokers (formally The Magpies), situated on Gipsy Patch Lane, and one Social Club, situated on Braydon Avenue.

Lodge Hill is a hill and residential area of Bristol, England. It separates the large outer urban areas of Fishponds and Kingswood, and Cossham Memorial Hospital at its peak is the highest point in Bristol at 369 ft (112 m). It has a population of 1,709 (est).
Lodge Hill once had commanding views of the Royal Forest of Kingswood, known to have been used by kings for hunting since Saxon times. Reached by Lodge Causeway at the top of the hill once stood King John’s Lodge or Kingswood Lodge, named after its most famous resident. A lodge is thought to have existed since the 13th century, certainly a two-storey building existed before 1610. During the mid-to-late 19th century an old iron smelting tower was incorporated into the building and it was known as Kingswood Castle, by now a substantial building with castellated roof lines. At one time is was used as a windmill and in 1928 the cellar still contained the vault of the original tower which had very thick walls and an underground passage which led to Hill House, overlooking Staple Hill. It was pulled down soon afterwards.

Longwell Green

Longwell Green is a suburb just outside the east fringe of Bristol. It is located within the traditional county of Gloucestershire and the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire (previously Avon). It lies along the A431 Bath Road, near the river Avon at grid reference ST658710.
Until relatively recently this was a small rural community but this changed in 1977 when 1.62 km² of land were developed for housing and businesses as part of Bristol's recent rapid expansion.
The centre of Longwell Green, and the site of the original village, is based along a stretch of the A431 Bath Road. The A431 is a Roman road and runs from Bath to Bristol. Longwell Green sits five miles (8 km) from Bristol and seven miles (11 km) from Bath.
There are a number of transport links which connect Longwell Green with both Bristol and Bath. The much criticised 45 bus route, operated by First Bristol, travels from Cadbury Heath to the centre of Bristol via Hanham, St. George and Redfield, whilst the 332, operated by First Somerset & Avon, connects the centres of both Bristol and Bath via Longwell Green. Keynsham is reachable on the 318 bus, also operated by First Group, and from here it is possible to travel by train Bristol and Bath, both of which have services to London. The Bristol ring road also passes through the outskirts of Longwell Green.

M32 motorway
The M32 is a motorway in South Gloucestershire and Bristol, England. It provides a link from Bristol city centre to the M4 and is part of the Bristol Parkway. At about 5 miles (8.0 km), it is one of Britain's shortest motorways. Most of the road has four lanes, though there is a climbing lane for 400 metres (440 yd) north of Junction 2, and the short section between Junction 1 and the M4 has six lanes.
The northern end of the M32 is at junction 19 of the M4, near Winterbourne Down. This was originally a grade separated roundabout junction, but has been modified in such a way that traffic joining the M4 need no longer give way at the roundabout. However any M4 traffic wishing to U-turn must now do so at junction 1, M32. The road then runs south between Filton in the west and Frenchay in the east. After meeting junction 1 it passes to the east of Horfield, Lockleaze and Easton. Junction 2 is located by Eastville Park. South of here, the road has a 60 mph (97 km/h) speed limit. It then continues further south and terminates at junction 3 north of St Pauls. The road continues as the A4032 into the centre of Bristol.

Mangotsfield

Mangotsfield is a village in South Gloucestershire, England, situated north of the Bristol suburb of Kingswood, bounded to the north by the M4 motorway and to the east by the Emersons Green housing estate.
The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as Manegodesfelle. St James's Church was originally 13th century but was altered in 1812 by James Foster of Bristol and again in 1851 by Pope, Bindon and Clarke. Rodway Hill House is 16th century.
In the centre of the village there used to be small village green, but it has been replaced by a large pavement, car parking and some local shops. Over the last decade the development of the Emersons Green housing estate has given rise to a large amount of traffic in the village.
Mangotsfield railway station on the former Midland Railway line was closed in 1966. It was the junction on the main line between Bristol and Gloucester for the branch line that ran to Bath Green Park and on to the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway to Bournemouth. The playwright and actor Arnold Ridley, famous for portraying the part of Private Godfrey in the BBC comedy Dad's Army, reputedly got the idea for his famous play The Ghost Train whilst waiting at the deserted station to catch a train in the early 1920s.

Milbury Heath
Milbury Heath is a hamlet in South Gloucestershire, located east of Thornbury. The hamlet has a garden centre and a few other farm shops. The heath is a local high point (109m asl at grid reference ST666902) and offers quite good views West across the Severn Vale, and North into the Vale of Berkeley; (for a good view East to the Cotswold Edge, it is better to proceed to Tytherington Hill about a mile to the South). A seat at the viewpoint commemorates the centenary of Falfield Parish Council in 1994. The hamlet has a former (Methodist?) chapel now converted to a private house, and a recently-restored duck-pond.
The hamlet is on the Avon Cycleway. Both the A38 road and M5 motorway pass nearby. Just to the north on the A38, (technically in Buckover), is the 'White Horse' pub.
The garden centre at Milbury Heath has come under fire due the treatment of robins who were nesting there and were sometimes flying in the cafeteria section. They were killed after getting permission from DEFRA. This sparked controversy among many groups, including the RSPCA. The garden centre defended the killings by claiming they were "a pest" and a "health hazard".

Monks Park
Monks Park is a northern suburb of the city of Bristol, England and is the highest point within the city. Monks Park stretches westward, towards Southmead, from the A38 trunk road. Filton Park lies directly north, on the South Gloucestershire side of the city boundary. Horfield lies to the east of the A38 and also to the south.
Monks Park takes its name from James Henry Monk, a nineteenth-century bishop of Gloucester and Bristol. The first development in Monks Park took place in the 1930s. Housing is mainly privately owned and semi-detached. Southmead Hospital, Bristol's largest hospital, occupies the south west corner of the suburb. There are two primary schools (Upper Horfield and St Teresa's RC) and Monks Park Secondary School.

New Passage
New Passage is a small hamlet in South Gloucestershire, England located on the banks of the Severn estuary near the village of Pilning. It derives its name from the ferry service which operated between there and South Wales before the late 19th century, when it lost out in competition with the Aust Ferry slightly upstream.
Because the estuary is narrow at this point, New Passage has long been the location for a ferry crossing to and from South Wales. During the English Civil War, Prince Rupert was chased across the river, and the pursuing Roundheads drowned on the English Stones rocks after being assured by the ferryman of the safety of the crossing.
By the end of the 17th century, ferry crossings from here to Black Rock near Portskewett in Monmouthshire rivalled the Aust ferry two miles (3 km) upstream, known as the "Old Passage", where crossings had been made for centuries. In 1715 the New Passage ferry service was taken over and developed by the Lewis family of St. Pierre, Monmouthshire, allowing it to be used by mail and passenger coaches between Bristol and south Wales. Records show Charles Wesley had a lucky escape in 1743, when his ship almost foundered in stormy weather.

Old Sodbury

Old Sodbury is a small village in the valley of the River Frome just below and to the west of the Cotswold escarpment and to the east of Chipping Sodbury and Yate in South Gloucestershire, England. The village extends from Chipping Sodbury in the West to the Cotswold Edge in the East and is on the Cotswold Way. The Badminton Road (A432) winds eastwards through the village, up to its junction with the A46, which broadly follows the line of the Fosseway and runs along the top of the Cotswold escarpment (from Bath to Stroud).
The village lies on an old coaching route, and is much more ancient than its westerly neighbour, Chipping Sodbury: hence the name 'Old' Sodbury.
The name of the village is recorded in Anglo-Saxon (in the dative case) as Soppanbyrig = "Soppa's fort" and in Domesday Book as Sopeberie. The name may refer to the Iron Age hill fort just to the north-east of the village. The fort, perched on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment, is enclosed on three sides by two parallel earthworks, and is open to the west, commanding an impressive view of the Frome Valley, Severn Vale and the Welsh mountains. The earth walls enclose an area of 11 acres (45,000 m2), and are usually kept mown by the local farmer (the fort is in private hands, but accessible). The fort can be reached by footpath from the A46 road, and through the village from below via the Cotswold Way. Below the fort are a group of ancient pillow mounds which are supposed to have been created by people who hoped rabbits would develop warrens there - providing a source of meat.

Oldland Common is a village in South Gloucestershire, England, on the outskirts of Bristol. It is in the civil parish of Bitton, approximately 8 miles between the centres of cities Bristol and Bath. It is a mainly residential area with a few small shops for the local community.
Oldland Common is the birthplace of the famous astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell, and is home to the Sir Bernard Lovell secondary school, a designated language college opened by Lovell himself in 1972, once attended by England cricketer Marcus Trescothick. Other schools in the village are St. Anne's Church of England Primary School (built in 1837 & initially called Oldland National School), Redfield Edge Primary School and Cherry Gardens Primary School.
The village lies on the Avon Valley Railway and is served by Oldland Common railway station. It has a population of just under 7,000 (according to the 2001 Census).
Oldland Common was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. As was common in the surrounding area, the village was involved in the coal mining industry and had its own pit on Cowhorn Hill during the 1800s.

Olveston
Olveston is a small village and larger parish in South Gloucestershire, England. The parish comprises the villages of Olveston and Tockington, and the hamlets of Old Down, Ingst and Awkley. Alveston became a separate parish in 1846. The district has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and the salt marshes that made up almost half of the parish, were progressively drained in Roman and Saxon times. A sea wall was constructed at the same time to prevent flooding from the nearby estuary of the River Severn.
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin was built around 1170 and rebuilt in 1370. It was struck by lightning in 1605 and the bells, spire and much of the chancel were destroyed. The tower was rebuilt the following year, and the church has been restored and enlarged in later years. Parish registers survive from 1561. The church contains the funerary brass(dated to 1506), and was the burial place, of Sir Walter Denys (d.1506) and his father Maurice Denys(d.1466), esquire, both lords of the manor, seated at Olveston Court.

Petty France is a hamlet in the rural north of South Gloucestershire, near the Gloucestershire border, in Hawkesbury parish. It is on the A46, which runs from Bath, to Nailsworth and Stroud, just south of another, slightly smaller hamlet, Dunkirk.
Previously, Petty France and Dunkirk were known as road accident hotspots. The proportion of fatal and serious accidents was 46%, significantly higher than the average for South Gloucestershire as a whole, which is 12%. 13 accidents occurred between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2001, including 2 fatal accidents, four were serious and seven were slight., as a result of this the speed through the two hamlets was reduced to 40 MPH. Badminton and Hawkesbury Upton are also nearby.
The Manor House in Petty France was built in 1812 for Robert Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool, prime minister from 1812 to 1827. Pilning

Pilning is a village in South Gloucestershire, England, close to Redwick and Severn Beach. Pilning is close to the busy M4, M49 and A403 as well as a railway line running through it, with a minor station. Nevertheless, it is a village filled with history and many sights.
Because of the close proximity of the River Severn and the English Stones section of the river bed, Pilning has found itself the ideal place to make both a substantial railway tunnel and motorway bridge. The Severn Tunnel opened in 1885 and the Second Severn Crossing opened in 1996.
The parish church of St Peter was completed in 1855 (consecrated 9 August), the principal architect was Thomas Henry Wyatt and H. Crisp it also has a late 20th century south extension in same style. It is a grade II listed building.
Pilning has an annual Carnival and family fun night. It also has its very own amateur dramatic society "The Village Players".

Pucklechurch is a historic village with an incredibly rich past, from the Bronze Age with its tumulus on Shortwood Hill, up to the siting of a barrage balloon depot in World War II. Not many Parishes in England can point to the former existence of a Royal building within their boundaries - Pucklechurch is an exception. Not only that, as the Anglo Saxon Chronicle tells us, King Edmund I was in fact murdered here, at his hunting lodge, in 946: "A.D. 946 . This year King Edmund died, on St. Augustine's mass day. That was widely known, how he ended his days: that Leof stabbed him at Pucklechurch."
Located near the Bristol Ring Road (A4174), the quaint village of Pucklechurch is at the top of an escarpment, with fine views towards the Cotswolds, about four miles (6 km) east. It is renowned for its village garden competitions, which take place during the summer each year. It is approximately midway between the major cities of Bristol and Bath in south-west England, and around 100 miles (160 km) west of London.

Ram Hill is a hamlet in South Gloucestershire, England. It is located between Coalpit Heath and Westerleigh and adjoins the hamlet of Henfield immediately to the south. In the Mudge Map 1815, Ram Hill was known as Nutridge Hill, and was linked to Westerleigh by Broad Lane and to Mays Hill by Frog Lane.
Ram Hill is a small hamlet that has seen considerable land use change over the recent centuries moving from a traditional agricultural landscape to an active coal mining area by the beginning of the nineteenth century. The population would have increased at that time supported by the introduction of new miner's cottages by the Coalpit Heath Colliery Company.
The closure of Ram Hill Colliery and Churchleaze Pits in the 1860s represented change but the new branch line to the Frog Lane Pit along with the movement of labour to the pit and the nearby Parkfield Colliery would have ensured that the industrial nature of the area was maintained to well into the twentieth century. In 1903 the new Great Western Railway direct route from Badminton to South Wales and the railway sidings at Coalpit Heath Railway Station would also have had an impact.

Redcliffe, Bristol

Redcliffe, also known as Redcliff, is a district of the English port city of Bristol, adjoining the city centre. It is bounded by the loop of the Floating Harbour (including Bathurst Basin) to the west, north and east, the New Cut of the River Avon to the south. Most of Redcliffe lies within the city ward of Lawrence Hill, although the westernmost section, including the cliffs and hill from which the area takes its name, is in Cabot ward. Temple Meads station is located in Redcliffe.
Redcliffe takes its name from the red sandstone cliffs which line the southern side of the Floating Harbour, behind Phoenix Wharf and Redcliffe Wharf. These cliffs are honey-combed with tunnels constructed both to extract sand for the local glass making industry and to act as store houses for goods. Part of the last remaining glass kiln in the area is now the Kiln Restaurant of the Ramada Bristol City Hotel in Redcliffe Way.
The parish church of St. Mary Redcliffe is one of Bristol's best known churches, with a spire soaring to a height of 292 ft (90m).

Rudgeway
Rudgeway is a village in South Gloucestershire in south west England, located between Alveston and Almondsbury on the A38 trunk road. It lies east of Earthcott, Latteridge, Iron Acton and Yate on the B4059 road.
The original village name was Ridgeway, since it was spread out along the upper edge of the escarpment above the Severn floodplain. Perhaps due to people mishearing the name, it evolved into Rudgeway. The former Methodist chapel built in 1896 is a small gothic structure. The church closed in 2001 and has been converted into a house.
The petrol station closed due to competition from garages in neighbouring villages. There is a restaurant, 'the Masons Arms'. South of Rudgeway a long straight section of the A38, known as the Mile Straight, heads towards Almondsbury.

Sea Mills, Bristol

Sea Mills is a suburb of the English port city of Bristol. It is situated some 3.5 miles (6 km) north-west of the city centre, towards the seaward end of the Avon Gorge. Nearby suburbs are Shirehampton to the west, Coombe Dingle to the north, and Sneyd Park and Stoke Bishop to the south. Sea Mills forms part of the city ward of Kingsweston.
Sea Mills was the site of a Roman settlement, known as Portus Abonae. The name and location suggest that this was a river or sea port. The Roman settlement seems to have been abandoned by the 4th century, and there is no evidence of Saxon settlement.
By the Middle Ages Bristol had become a major port, with all traffic between the port and the sea having to pass through the Avon Gorge and past Sea Mills. In 1712, Joshua Franklyn, a Bristol merchant, built a wet dock at Sea Mills, to eliminate the need for large sailing ships to navigate the dangerous River Avon any further upstream. This was located where the River Trym enters the River Avon. However, poor transport links doomed the enterprise and the harbour facilities fell into disrepair by the end of the 18th century. Some remains of the dock still exist, and are used as a harbour by pleasure craft.

Siston
Siston (pronounced "sizeton") is a small village in South Gloucestershire, England 7 miles (11 km) east of Bristol Castle, ancient centre of Bristol, recorded historically as Syston, Sistone, Syton, Sytone and Systun etc. The village lies at the confluence of the two sources of the Siston Brook, a tributary of the River Avon. The village consists of a number of cottages and farms centered around St Anne's Church, and the grand Tudor manor house of Siston Court. Anciently it was bordered to the west by the royal Hunting Forest of Kingswood, stretching most of the way to Bristol Castle, always a royal possession,caput of the Forest. The local part of the disafforested Kingswood became Siston Common but has recently been eroded by the construction of the Avon Ring Road and housing developments. A conservation area since 1989, the village and environs have statutory protection from over-development.

Sneyd Park

Sneyd Park is a suburb of Bristol, England, lying on the western fringe of Clifton Down, adjacent to the Avon Gorge and the Sea Walls observation point. Home to many millionaires, Sneyd Park was originally developed in Victorian times. Many Victorian and Edwardian villas line the edge of the Downs. More modern housing has since been built down over the slope, towards Sea Mills, Bristol.
Clifton Down, in the vicinity of Sea Walls, was the location of the flight, on 12 November 1910, of the first aircraft built by the Bristol and Colonial Aeroplane Company. Many thousands of Bristol's citizens flocked to see two well-known French pilots, Maurice Tétard and Henri Jullerot, give a public demonstration of the new Bristol Boxkite. Blériot's famous flight across the English Channel had occurred only the year before.

Soundwell

Located centrally in the parish is St. Stephen's Anglican Church and St. Stephen's CofE primary school with approximately 300 pupils. The original St. Stephen's infants school was closed and demolished several years ago to allow for expansion of Soundwell College. Soundwell College was a college of further education, now merged with the City of Bristol College, which maintains a centre in the locality.
Soundwell was the home of Soundwell F.C.. in the 1940s and 1950s. The current team, Soundwell Victoria, plays in the Bristol and District League. The team play home games at the Star Ground behind Kingswood Leisure Centre, formerly known as Soundwell Swimming Baths before it was developed. The Star Ground was named after the Pub next to the Leisure Centre, although the pub has since been renamed "The Turnpike".

South Wales
South Wales (Welsh: De Cymru) is an area of Wales bordered by England and the Bristol Channel to the east and south, and Mid Wales and West Wales to the north and west. The most densely populated region in the south-west of the United Kingdom, it is home to around 2.1 million people and includes the capital city of Cardiff (population approximately 324,800), as well as Swansea and Newport. The Brecon Beacons national park covers about a third of South Wales, containing Pen y Fan, the highest mountain south of Snowdonia.
The extent of South Wales is loosely defined, but it is generally considered to be the area surrounding the M4 motorway, including the historic counties of Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire and sometimes extending westwards to include south Carmarthenshire and south Pembrokeshire. In the western extent, from Swansea westwards, local people would probably recognise that they lived in both South Wales and in West Wales — there is considerable overlap in these somewhat artificial boundaries. The northern border is particularly ill-defined, but the A40 may be a good approximation whilst others consider the more southerly Heads of the Valleys Road as the boundary.

Southville, Bristol

Southville is an inner city ward of Bristol, England, situated on the south bank of the River Avon and northwest of Bedminster. Most of the area's houses were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries either for workers in the Bristol coal mining industry or the tobacco factories of W. D. & H. O. Wills, homes of the eponymous "Wills Girls". The world headquarters of Imperial Tobacco, the world’s fourth largest international tobacco company, is still situated in the ward. Southville was also a centre for the tanning industry.
The area was bombed in the second world war, with a large number of streets losing one or more houses. Southville was the unintended target of the many short-falling bombs aimed at the adjoining dock facilities and traffic. The subsequent post-war rebuilding is noticeable on many streets, where the generic style of house building changes to modern construction. Infilling of wartime damage is, perhaps surprisingly, still continuing. The house price boom of the early 21st Century has seen new builds on existing vacant sites and on bombed sites which had been previously used for other activities such as pre-fabricated garages and car sales lots.

Arnos Vale is an area near the centre of the city. It includes the historic Arnos Vale Cemetery, which occupies 45 acres (180,000 m2) in the neighbouring Knowle ward. The cemetery, closed in 1998, it has been kept open by volunteers since. Arno's Vale Cemetery is part of the old Arno's Court Estate. It is one of only four estates in Bristol that still have the original estate house standing (now known as Arno's Manor Hotel). The remaining estate land includes the cemetery, the hotel and Arno's Court Park. The park, which has views across Bristol, connects two geographically separate areas in Bristol (Knowle & Brislington), separated by a very steep hill within the park.

St George was originally outside the city boundary until about 1860. The area was once the end of the tram line from the city of Bristol, the terminus being in Beaconsfield Road.
St. George was once a mining area but now only pit names remain to remind everyone of this district's mining history, i.e., Deep Pit Road.
John Armitstead well known as a coal adventurer — a colliery proprietor had a pit between Church Road and Whitehall Road, St George where he installed a pumping engine for raising coal. Power was generated from water by means of a fire and ergo the device was called a Fire-engine. It stood on Colt’s or Boulter’s Ground but the land came to be known as the Engine Ground. To this day, a pub in the area is called the Fire Engine.
In the modern era St George is known for its many shops and pubs.
Troopers Hill
Located on the outskirts of Bristol, local tradition has it that the Parliamentary army, under the command of Sir Thomas Fairfax, camped on Troopers Hill prior to the siege of Bristol in 1645. It has also been suggested that the ditch between the hill and the allotments was dug at this time as a defensive earthworks. It is known that the army approached Bristol via Keynsham and Hanham and it is possible therefore that Troopers Hill, with its views of the city, was used while the Parliamentary army was headquartered at Hanham.

St Pauls (also written St Paul's) is an inner suburb of Bristol, England, situated just north east of the city centre and west of the M32. It is bounded by the A38 (Stokes Croft), the B4051 (Ashley Road), the A4032 (Newfoundland Road) and the A4044 (Newfoundland Street). In the early 18th century it was laid out as one of Bristol's first suburbs.
During the days of the Bristol slave trade, St Pauls was the location of choice for the wealthy slave trading merchants. This is reflected in the Georgian architecture.
In the 1870s, Brooks Dye Works opened on the edge of St Pauls and became a major local employer, leading to the construction of terraced houses. Together with migration to Bristol, both from overseas and within Britain, this led to St Pauls becoming a densely populated suburb by the Victorian era.
The area was bomb damaged during World War II. Rebuilding and investment was focused on new housing estates such as Hartcliffe and Southmead rather than St Pauls, and this contributed to a decline in the quality of the area. During the large-scale immigration of the 1950s, many people moved from Jamaica and settled in St Pauls.

Stapleton is an area in the north-eastern suburbs of the city of Bristol, England. The name is colloquially used today to describe the ribbon village along Bell Hill and Park Road in the Frome Valley. It borders Eastville to the South and Begbrook and Frenchay to the North. It comprises an eclectic mix of housing mainly from the Victorian, Edwardian, inter-war and late twentieth century periods.
It is a popular residential area on three counts. It is convenient for the M32 motorway (with rapid access the M4 and M5), it is a semi rural area within two miles of central Bristol and it boasts a popular public school.
The ancient parish of Stapleton covered Fishponds and Eastville and was originally within Kingswood Forest. The Saxon hamlet of Stapleton, first documented in 1208, stood at the edge of the forest, just north of the River Frome. Finds of Roman coins point to even earlier habitation. Even in the 18th century it was still heavily wooded.

Stoke Bishop is a very affluent and medium-sized outer city suburb in the north-west of Bristol, located in between Westbury-on-Trym, Sneyd Park, and Sea Mills. Although relatively small, Stoke Bishop's population has increased due to substantial infilling on the Smelting Works sports ground and The Grove which used to belong to Clifton High school. The population of Stoke Bishop varies throughout the year because of the influx of students to the large campus of halls of residence situated on the edge of the suburb and the Downs during university term time.
Stoke Bishop is also the name of a council ward, which also includes Sneyd Park, most of the Downs and a small area of Sea Mills along the River Trym.
The suburb is concentrated around a small village hall and a row of shops on Druid Hill, with a number of small local businesses.
Within Stoke Bishop there are three churches including St Mary Magdalene (CofE) and a Baptist church; one primary school, Stoke Bishop Primary, also known as Cedar Park; and a village hall, which is used for a variety of activities from dog training to Karate. There also remains one playing field, Stoke Lodge, mainly used by local schools for athletics, football, and cricket.

Stoke Gifford is a large dormitory village, and parish in South Gloucestershire, England, in the northern suburbs of Bristol. It has around 11,000 residents as of the 2001 Census. It is home to Bristol Parkway station, on the London-South Wales railway line, and the Bristol offices of Friends Life, Hewlett Packard and The University of the West of England. The parish includes neighbouring Little Stoke, Harry Stoke and Stoke Park. The parish borders Filton, to the south-west, Patchway to the north west, Bradley Stoke to the north and Winterbourne and Hambrook to the east,. Following the Norman Invasion of 1066, William the Conqueror gave the manor of Stoke Gifford to Osbern Giffard, one of his generals. ). Giffard himself was a native of Longueville-le-Giffard, Normandy, now known as Longueville-sur-Scie, which is where the 'Gifford' suffix of the name derives from. The 'Stoke' suffix may come from the Stoke Brook, 'Stoke' may also be a reference to the Saxon word 'Stoche' meaning 'property of or dependent farmstead'. Bradley Stoke and Stoke Lodge, both 20th Century estates were also given the name. Stoke Lodge
Stoke Lodge is a suburb of Bristol, England, developed in the 50s and early 60s on farmland to the south of Patchway Common, South Gloucestershire and east of the A38 trunk road. Although the busy London to South Wales railway forms the south-western boundary of the estate, the sound of the trains is moderated by the railway tracks being within a cutting. The new town of Bradley Stoke lies immediately to the east, whilst the suburb of Little Stoke is on its southern edge.
Stoke Lodge housing is mostly chalet bungalows, but there is a fairly large bungalow estate in the north. Stoke Lodge takes its name from the old lodge house on Stoke Lane, an access road that runs through the estate. Part of the original walled lodge served for many years as a local dairy.
An interchange on the A38 allows traffic from Cribbs Causeway, Patchway, etc. to cross the trunk road freely and gain access to the estate. There is however no direct road link between Stoke Lodge and Bradley Stoke. Traffic can also enter Stoke Lodge from Little Stoke via Stoke Lane or Station Road.

Tortworth

Tortworth is a hamlet, and civil parish, near Thornbury in South Gloucestershire, England. It has a population of 150, and is noted for a huge and ancient chestnut tree, believed to be over 1000 years old. The tree, in St. Leonard's churchyard, looks like a small wood because many branches of the main trunk have taken root.
Boundary records compiled in the reign of John already shown the "Great Chestnut of Tortworth" in South Gloucestershire, as a landmark; and it was also known by the same name in the days of Stephen. This tree measured over 50 feet in circumference at 5 feet from the ground in 1720.
The civil parish contains Leyhill prison, and Tortworth Court, former home of the Earl of Ducie but now a hotel. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the manor is recorded as held by Turstin FitzRolf.

Totterdown, Bristol

Totterdown is a suburb of Bristol, England, situated area just south of the River Avon and south-east of Temple Meads railway station. It rises relatively steeply from the river bank to a largely terraced Victorian housing area which is notable for its painted homes - often in bright colours - that can be seen from some distance. There is a tight network of extremely steep roads in eastern Totterdown, of which Vale Street, although very short, is alleged[citation needed] to be the steepest residential road in England. For safety cars can only be parked on it at an angle to the kerb.
Once mainly a working class area and built for the nearby railway industry, in the mid to late 19th century, Totterdown has become a popular area for the younger generation taking up work in the city centre.
Totterdown has several local pubs some of which attract a younger clientele with DJ nights. Pubs offering music include The Oxford,Shakespeare New Found Out and the Thunderbolt (previously known as "The Turnpike"). The Oxford has regular live music including "open mike" events and the Thunderbolt books local and national bands. On Sundays there is live music and food for a fiver at the Thali.

Tyndall's Park is an area of central Bristol, England. It lies north of Park Row and Queen's Road, east of Whiteladies Road and west of St Michael's Hill, between the districts of Clifton, Cotham and Kingsdown. It includes the campus of Bristol Grammar School, and many of the buildings of the University of Bristol.
The area is named after Thomas Tyndall, a Bristol merchant who between 1753 and 1767 bought a number of fields which then existed in the area and turned them into an ornamental park. He built a stately house on the crest of the hill, on the site of a Civil War fortification, and named it Fort Royal (now known as Royal Fort). In 1799 Tyndall's son Colonel Thomas Tyndall employed Humphrey Repton to landscape the gardens.
In 1825 and 1833, two roads (Aberdeen Road and West Park) were built in north western corner of the park, and developed for housing. In 1852 the Tyndalls began selling off the remainder of the western half of the park for development, and in 1877 5 acres (20,000 m2) was sold for a new building for Bristol Grammar School. From 1880, more land was sold to University College, Bristol. The Royal Fort was occupied by members of the Tyndall family until 1916, when Henry Herbert Wills bought it and gave it to the University.

Warmley
Warmley is a village in South Gloucestershire, England, to the east of Kingswood on the outskirts of Bristol.
In the mid 18th century it contained the Warmley Works of William Champion. It is the home of a football team, Warmley F.C., and the brewery Bath Ales.
The Bristol & Bath Railway Path passes through Warmley.
One of its most famous residents is Neil Wilmer, famed for working on the hit television shows Deal or No Deal and Springwatch.[citation needed]
Warmley features a public green space known as Warmley Forest Park, which includes a skate park and a scout hut. Siston Brook flows through Warmley Forest Park, and a fantastic tree swing is positioned over the brook.
The Warmley War Memorial Park sits on the High Street opposite the landmark sign of the bicycle shop which has been plying its trade in the heart of the village since the beginning of the 20th century.
The 21st century has seen a 'ring road' snake around the edge of the village bringing with it its encumbant services and turning the local garage into an ' tesco express' fuel and grocery shop.

Watley's End

Watley's End was a small village or hamlet located in South Gloucestershire, England. It now forms the northern part of Winterbourne. Watley's End Road which runs through the village would have been the main road.
Watley's End lay sandwiched between the much larger villages of Frampton Cotterell and Winterbourne, eventually being swallowed by them and becoming part of Winterbourne. The Eastern border lay along the River Frome, from Nightingales Bridge down to the Cloisters. The northern border was considered to be Court Road and Frampton Cotterell. Hooper's Farm (which remaines the only piece of green land between Frampton Cotterell and Winterbourne) was considered the western edge. The southern edge of the area started where Park Avenue met North Road and continued east until the Cloisters.
There are two churches in the area: Salem Methodist Church (junction of Salem and Factory roads) and the other was the Ebenezer Methodist Church which was on Watley's End Road adjacent to what is now York Gardens.

Westbury on Trym is an affluent suburb and council ward in the north of the City of Bristol, near the suburbs of Stoke Bishop, Westbury Park, Henleaze, Southmead and Henbury, in the southwest of England. Westbury on Trym has a village atmosphere. The place is partly named after the River Trym that flows through it.
The origins of Westbury on Trym predate those of Bristol itself. At the end of the 8th century, King Offa of Mercia granted land at Westbury to his minister, Aethelmund. Later there was a monastery at Westbury, probably initially a secular one, with married clergy. This changed towards the end of the 10th century when Oswald of Worcester, in whose diocese the monastery lay, sent a party of 12 monks to follow more stringent rules at the Westbury monastery.
The architect Ednoth constructed a new church and other buildings. The monastery became a college with a dean and canons at the end of the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the mid-15th century to resemble a miniature castle with turrets and a gatehouse. The Royalist Prince Rupert of the Rhine used it as his quarters during the English Civil War. When he left, in 1643, he ordered it to be set on fire so that the Parliamentarians could not make use of it. In the 20th century some of the college buildings were restored. Westbury College Gatehouse passed into the hands of the National Trust and the grounds were adapted for housing elderly people.

Westerleigh is a village and parish in South Gloucestershire, England near the edge of the Cotswold hills. The village is located between Yate and Bristol, nearby villages include Nibley, Wapley, Iron Acton, Coalpit Heath and Codrington.
The village is first mentioned in a Saxon document of 887AD. At that time it was probably just a clearing in the woods with possibly a wooden church. Westerleigh is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.
In medieval times the village would probably have been a green with the houses and church around it, and prosperous. The northern wall and porch of St James church is from the 13th century, as is the carved stone pulpit. The church was rebuilt in the perpendicular style, with the tower (once used as the village lock up) added at a later date. The 700th anniversary was celebrated in 2004.
By 1600 the village supported a shoemaker, a blacksmith, a sawyer, a flour mill, a malt house and two public houses. In 1617, John Crandall was baptised to James and Eleanor Crandall at St. James the Great church, and became one of the founders of Westerly, Rhode Island, USA.

Whitchurch is a village in north Somerset, England and an adjoining suburb of south eastern Bristol, bounded by Hartcliffe to the west and Hengrove and Knowle to the north. The suburb was initially developed during the 1930s.
The A37 road, which passes through Whitchurch, links Bristol with Dorchester. Within Bristol the A37 is known as Wells Road. It was one of the first dual carriageways to be built in Bristol.
The northern parts of the parish of Whitchurch were transferred to Bristol in the 1930s and 1951. The suburb now lies in the council wards of Whitchurch Park and Hengrove.
The suburb is the only part of Bristol not to use the 0117 dialing code, Whitchurch numbers using the 01275 of north Somerset instead.
Facilities close by include the Hengrove Leisure Park which includes a Cineworld Cinema, various restaurants/food retailers (Frankie & Benny's, McDonalds,KFC, a Gala Bingo hall and a popular activities park including skateboard and climbing frame type facilities. Adjacent to the leisure park is Hawkfield Business Park, which is a significant source of commerce and employment for the suburb, notably housing the headquarters of Pukka Herbs.

Whitehall, is a district on the edge of inner Bristol city in England.
The local green space is Whitehall Playing Fields or Packer's Ground as it was known, taking its name from the local chocolate factory - Packers. As of 2006 this company is known as Famous Names and has just announced its total closure. The playing field is to be fully redeveloped for sports use for The City Academy Bristol school.[1]
In part of the area, adjoining Easton and Eastville, there are still many streets and houses from the Victorian and Edwardian eras and in the part, adjoining St George, Bristol is the Gordon Estate with houses that were built in 1936. This area originally consisted of market gardens and the new estate was built on the rhubarb patch and as a result, rhubarb was quite commonplace in many gardens.
Some houses ("villas") overlook the adjoining St. George Park and these have small balconies.
Newer houses have since been built on the former Co-op Bakery and Rose Green High School sites. There is a plaque on the original school wall, which was retained, giving some history, about John Wesley having preached on this site.

Willsbridge is a village in the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire, England, located on the outskirts of Bristol. Willsbridge Castle, situated on a prominent hillside site, was built c1730, with crenellations added in the nineteenth century.
The village contains a nature reserve, Willsbridge Mill, run by the Avon Wildlife Trust and the site of an abandoned watermill on the Siston Brook, which acts as an Education and Countryside Centre. Willsbridge Mill and Valley are leased from South Gloucestershire Council.
The valley contains many habitats. The woodlands have carpets of Common Bluebells, campions and resound with birdsong. The ponds are important homes for frogs, toads and dragonflies, and dippers and kingfishers visit the stream. Foxes and badgers also live in the valley and noctule and Greater Horseshoe Bat feed on the many insects in the valley.

Bishopsworth is a largely residential suburb in south Bristol, England, which was formerly a civil parish.
The name may originally have been Bishport.
In 1928 the parish of Bedminster Down was created from the north of Bishopsworth in response to the development of the area. The parishes of Hartcliffe and Withywood were separated off more recently.
Bishopsworth has an estimated population of 11,444 people (2001 Census). Its municipal services are run by Bristol City Council whilst its local health services are managed by the Bristol South and West Primary Care Trust.

The first church in Bishopsworth was a small chapel dedicated to St Peter and St Paul built under an arrangement in 1194 between Robert Arthur, lord of the manor, and George de Dunster, prebend of Bedminster. The agreement provided for a chaplain to visit from Bedminster on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. This provision continued until dissolution in 1540. Yate developed from a village into a new town in the 1960s, partly as an overspill or commuter town for the city of Bristol.
The town is surrounded by countryside and within reach of the city of Bristol by bicycle, car, bus or train.
Yate is represented in the UK Parliament by the constituency of Thornbury and Yate.
Yate was in Gloucestershire until 1974 when it became part of the newly-formed county of Avon. In 1996, Avon was abolished, and the area became part of the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire. Yate remains part of Gloucestershire only for traditional purposes.

Jack Lopresti
Giacomo (Jack) Lopresti (23 August 1969) is a British Conservative Party politician. In the 2010 general election he was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Filton and Bradley Stoke, a constituency newly created by changes made by the Boundary Commission for England.
Lopresti previously represented the Stockwood Ward on Bristol City Council from 1999 to 2007. He also stood unsuccessfully for the Bristol East constituency in 2001, and for the South West at the European Parliament elections in 2004.
On leaving school, Lopresti worked in his family ice cream and catering business locally for over ten years. Post 1997, he worked in the financial services and residential property sectors, as a consultant and manager. He trained, and ran an office, in the Bradley Stoke and Stoke Gifford area. He has also served in the Territorial Army in the 266 Battery, Royal Artillery as a gunner, serving with the 29 Commando for a year, which culminated in a 5 month tour in Afghanistan.

Saint Peter
Saint Peter or Simon Peter was an early Christian leader and one of the twelve apostles of Jesus who is featured prominently in the New Testament Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles and who is venerated as a saint. The son of John or of Jonah, he was from the village of Bethsaida in the province of Galilee or Gaulanitis. His brother Andrew was also an apostle. Peter is venerated in multiple churches and is regarded as the first Pope by the Catholic Church. After working to establish the church of Antioch, presiding for seven years as the leader of the city's Christian community, he preached to scattered communities of believers, Jews, Hebrew Christians and the gentiles, in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia Minor and Bithynia.[citation needed] He then went to Rome, where in the second year of Claudius, it is claimed, he overthrew Simon Magus and held the Sacerdotal Chair for 25 years.[citation needed] He is said to have been put to death at the hand of Emperor Nero.
Peter wrote two General epistles. The Gospel of Mark is also ascribed to him (as Mark was his disciple and interpreter). On the other hand, several books bearing his name—the Acts of Peter, Gospel of Peter, Preaching of Peter, Revelation of Peter, and Judgement of Peter—are rejected by the Catholic Church as Apocryphal.

World War I
World War I (WWI), which was predominantly called the World War or the Great War from its occurrence until 1939 (World War II), and the First World War or World War I thereafter, was a major war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. This is just a little bit of footage I had time to take, when we assisted in Recovering the Brooklands Museum Concorde from Filton to Weybridge. Many of my friends in Recovery loaned kit or assisted in picking up loads and without their help this project would have cost much more that it did. I have also added a few stills taken by Cliff Knox, Julian Temple and Myself, to give you a better understanding of how much harder the task became when we lost G-BOAA. Still proud that I wrote the music for the last flight. A BBC commission. A little doggerel in the words but I wasn't going to give away 50% after I had conceived the thing. Mind you, 50% of what? Privilege. Then Prince Andrew slapped me on the back and said "terrific, well done". Wasn't expecting it so grunted at him. Trying to collapse me music stand, see. Was busy. That's the knighthood gone then. Perhaps the work articulates a transition from a manufacturing based, world beating nation to one based on heritage (a thought evolved in retrospect, of course) - where the only drivers of economy left are heritage or retail driven. A scenario where banks collapse, are immoral and untouchable and railway sidings are silent. Perhaps my elegaic tub thumping is a voice for this post-industrial era. You decide. A hopeful and grateful feeling was what I was aiming for, a sonic boom (which is orchestral) and the desire to fly as components of the work. Not a requiem so much. Luckily I could recycle a tune for the wedding in "Two Noble Kinsmen" I had used at the Old Vic (hence the two voices in the texture for the first part). I also used the tune for a funeral of a child and was able to tell the parents that this tune would be heard all over the world. That's what music and art is all about and ...

Filton is a town in South Gloucestershire, England, situated on the northern outskirts of the city of Bristol, about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from the city centre. Filton lies in Bristol postcode areas BS7 and BS34. The town centres upon Filton Church, which dates back to the 12th century and is a grade II listed building.[1] Further north are the towns of Patchway and Bradley Stoke.
The name of the town comes from the Old English feleþe (hay), and tūn (farm, field). The name dates back to at least 1187.
Filton has large areas of open space, which includes several playing fields, a golf course and a large airfield, Bristol-Filton.

Districts within the town include Filton Park and Northville. East Filton, which has grown up east of the Bristol-South Wales railway line, contains the offices of the Ministry of Defence Defence Procurement Agency, plus a shopping park.
Filton can be reached from Junction 1 of the M32 motorway, or from Junction 16 of the M5 motorway. The town has a railway station, Filton Abbey Wood.
Filton has an aerospace connection dating back to the early days of the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Aerospace companies in Filton include BAE Systems, Airbus, Rolls-Royce and MBDA factories, all located around Filton Aerodrome. On 26 November 2003, Concorde 216 (G-BOAF)[2] made the final ever Concorde flight, returning to Filton to be kept there permanently as the centrepiece of a projected air museum.[3] This museum will include the existing Bristol Aero Collection which is kept at Kemble Airport, 33 miles (53 km) from Filton. This collection includes a Bristol Britannia aircraft.
Other organisations include the MOD, Viridor, Hewlett Packard and the Royal Mail. Filton is also home to the regional blood processing facility, NHS Blood and Transplant Filton.[4]
Filton's educational facilities include Filton College, Filton High School (to be renamed Abbeywood Community School from 2010[5]) and several primary schools. The University of the West of England is at nearby Frenchay.
Filton has two main shopping areas - the Shield Centre (on the site of the former Shield Laundry) and Abbey Wood Retail Park, as well as other shops. To the east of the town there is a small area of woodland known as Splatt's Abbey Wood.
Bristol Cars was a manufacturer of hand-built luxury cars, based in Filton. Bristol Cars had no distributors nor dealers and dealt directly with customers; they had a showroom in Kensington in London. They claimed to be the last wholly British-owned luxury car builder. The company went into administration on the 3rd March 2011.[6]

At the dawn of the 20th century, Filton was a small village, still detached from the city of Bristol to the south. Farming was the principal occupation. However, there was a large factory-like laundry in the village, opposite Filton House, owned by Samuel Shield.
The Bristol to South Wales railway line passed through the village. There was a small station near the site of the current Abbey Wood Station. A much larger railway station, known as Filton Junction, opened in 1910, after the rail route from Bristol to London was finished.
In 1907 the northern terminus for Bristol Tramways was moved out from Horfield to Filton. Tram production in the tramway sheds commenced in 1908. The manufacture of aeroplanes started in the Bristol Tramway sheds in 1910. Aeroengine production started in 1920.
Between the wars Filton expanded rapidly, to become a suburb of Bristol. Terraced and semi-detached housing, in small estates on both sides of the A38 trunk road, was built. Eventually, Filton became part of the Bristol conurbation, although it remained outside the city boundary.
During the 1930s, two infant/primary schools and one secondary school were built in Filton to accommodate the growing number of school-age children in the area. Many of these children were evacuated when WWII started in 1939, but returned later, during the Phoney War.
Filton High School, originally a grammar school, but now a comprehensive, started to take pupils in 1960.
In the late 1940s The main runway of Filton Aerodrome was greatly extended for the Brabazon project. Charlton village was demolished and the pre-war Filton bypass was severed. In the early 1960s, a new bypass was constructed, roughly parallel to the old one, and this later became part of the M5 motorway.
During the mid-1970s the A38 trunk road was upgraded to a dual carriageway. Station Road, a country lane in the early part of the 20th century, was also widened to become a dual carriageway and form part of the Avon Ring Road.
Sandwiched between roads, factories, railway lines and the aerodrome, Filton expanded little after WWII. However, from the late 1970s a trading estate slowly developed on the eastern side of the Bristol/South Wales railway line in what is now known as East Filton. Later, the Ministry of Defence set up a large office complex, known as Abbey Wood, in the same area.
Filton is also home to the Filton Concert Brass. The band, formed 60 years ago, is currently Bristol's highest-placed brass band, having been promoted to the First Section of the West Region at the 2010 Regional Finals in Torquay. This places them above other Bristol bands such as Bristol East and Kingswood, and City of Bristol. For the past few years, the band has been conducted in contests by Bryn James. The band's oldest serving member, Jim Scott, was a founding member of the band and, until this year, had played in the regional finals every year!
In 1973 the Rolls-Royce car division was separated as Rolls-Royce Motors. Rolls-Royce (1971) Limited (the engine division) was privatised in 1987 as Rolls-Royce plc.

Filton Park is a district within the town of Filton, South Gloucestershire, which is a suburb of Bristol, England. Filton Park lies directly on the city border, sandwiched between the A38 trunk road and Southmead Road. Filton itself lies to the north and east of Filton Park. Monks Park is to the south.
Housing in Filton Park is mainly privately owned, semi-detached and 1930s built. Pre-WWI properties in the district tend to be quite large, with generous gardens. Extensive playing fields border the north-western side of Southmead Road. The golf links, on the hillside beyond, is owned by Filton Golf Club. The area has a primary school and a playgroup.
Filton Park is regarded as a desirable place to live since it is close to major centres of employment such as BAE Systems, and the Ministry of Defence at Abbey Wood.

Matthew Clifford Luke (born February 26, 1971 in Long Beach, California) is a former outfielder and first baseman in Major League Baseball. He attended college at the University of California and played for five different major league teams in his career: the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers (twice), Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers and Anaheim Angels
He played his final major league game on September 30, 1999. He finished with a career .242 batting average, 15 home runs, and 40 runs batted in.

Luke presently resides in Orange County, California. After graduating from El Dorado High School, Luke went on to attend college at UC Berkeley. He is a member of Yorba Linda Friends Church and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. As of 2011, Luke owns his own real estate company, Matt Luke Home Team, where he also works as a real estate broker/agent. He also is a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization serving as a speaker and representative of the Dodgers Legend Bureau.[1]
