    Exhausted

    Saturday 19th May 2012

I just slept for four hours and woke up tired. That hasn’t happened since…I’m not sure that ever happened, even back in college.

Granted, I broke a common habit for a minute yesterday. That thing where I mostly just sit around letting my brain do all the work. We got fed up with the layout here in the den [meaning that I finally gave up and agreed], deciding to move everything around. A lot. So, my dangerously comfy sofa—older than this house and made of really solid, heavy stuff—went back to the parlour where we kinda shoulda left it a couple years ago, and a larger, newer sectional thing wound up here in the den, but on the other side of the room.

That’s the good news. The bad news involves gravity and its conspiracy to make sofas heavy.

Also, while the den is reasonably large, it’s not quite large enough for all the stuff in it. Technically, more stuff—shelves, for instance—would work out better; but, the way things are just kinda in here doesn’t fully work. So we’re not really done yet. We’re just done for the moment, because I’m the only one not asleep, and I just don’t care anymore.

And Zombi. Because Evil Never Sleeps.

Note by the way that my shoes are each over a foot long, and Zombi’s further away. I’ve seen larger cats; some of them were S.fatalis.

So, anyway: I’m all exhausted here. Like, typing this is a little too much effort right now. Or maybe not enough. I can’t currently make sense of hitting laptop keys with less than ten or twenty PSI. If this were a piano, the neighbours would be calling the police.

    What else is new….

I’ve been putting a lot of preproductive thought into reworking the zombiebook lately. I started working on that at the beginning of the year, even then knowing that I’d still be laughably outdated by realtime; like, if I’d just updated the thing in January, there’d have been no mention of pinterest.com. The book’ll still stray from reality here and there [like, it might have zombies in it], but I want the more mundane aspects to be realistic for the final couple weeks of 2012.

That actually presents a funny, anachronistic problem for me. There’s stuff in the zombiebook as it is now, and as it’s been since I wrote it in 2004, which has since been cloned [intentionally or not] in a few more modern zombiefilms. Even a few things I’d cut to reduce the pagecount got cloned—probably less intentionally still. So it’s gonna be a little strange to update the novel, which occurs in a realistic world aware of fictional zombies, sticking to the plotpoints from eight years ago while acknowledging the kooky coincidence that some of those elements appear to reflect things like ZombieLand and The Walking Dead and whatever. It’s suddenly almost metafiction in its symbiosis.

But that’s okay. It’ll just be kinda weird. And I’ll probably add several pages to the notes at the end, explaining the weirdness to anyone who manages to read that far. I’m assuming that the thing’ll end up being close to the original fifteen hundred pages [whatever that translates to in a Kindle, where it'll be trapped by the ageless difficulty of printing a 'real' book that long]; though I might tighten up a few things which seem too long in the released version without the additional context, instead of adding all that additional context back in to justify it.

I’d go into specifics on that, but there’s still that chance of spoilers. In fact, I’d really prefer to have people read the forthcoming better version—since that’s sorta the whole point. I might even try to figure out a practical way to issue free updates with the fixed Kindling: EMail in a shot of yourself holding a copy of the original, with a PostIt reading YOU STOLEDED MY MONIES or something, and get a free copy of the good version once it’s ready. Or something; I dunno.

Meanwhile, I stupidly had a kooky idea for a whole new book the other day. There are spoilers in that, of course; it’s generally about a plan to prevent the grey goo phenomenon with nanotechnology, and the problems created thereby. It’s a neat idea; I just thought of it at approximately the worst possible time. Then again, I’ve still got about six months to fix the zombiebook; and Hunter really digs the nanotech book so far; and, probably, I could have that thing written by the end of June if I went close to fulltime on it.

I could have it done by the end of this month, but I’ve got slightly less free time than I used to have; if nothing else, I need to average a webcomic per day—that doesn’t really take all that long, but I tend to be thinking about it even when I’m not physically doing it.

    On the subject, here’s today’s:
