Pulitzer Prize Winning Photography: A mirror to the world
Pulitzer Prize Winning Photography: A mirror to the world
A collection of photographs which have won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography from 1961 to 2007. The collection has 27 photos and obviously don't have all winner photos. Pulitzer prizes for press phtography are given in two categories: Breaking news photography and Feature phptography. More info can be obtained from en.wikipedia.org In the later years, the award is mostly given to a collection of photographs covering a story rather than a single one. In such cases I chose the photo which I found most appealing for various reasons. For example, while the photo of a medical technician weeping at the funeral of his collegue who died in the 9/11 (2002) was chosen for its deep emotion, the photo of a dog feeding on a human corpse in New Orleans (2006) was chosen for its shock value. However a collection of award-winning photos can be found in the Pulitzer prizes official site: www.pulitzer.org

Pulitzer Prize Winner Reads Poetry at Robert Lowell Memorial Lecture
Pulitzer Prize Winner Reads Poetry at Robert Lowell Memorial Lecture
The daughter of an oil driller, poet Kay Ryan was raised in the Mojave Desert, attended community college, and later began writing poems using a deck of tarot cards to jump-start them. Ryan says she also found inspiration in the popular Ripley's Believe It or Not! books. And unlike many of her contemporary colleagues, her poems freely employ rhyme. Now 65, Ryan struggled for decades to be noticed (she self-published her first collection of verse); but all that changed in recent years. Her work has appeared regularly in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Poetry. A two-term US poet laureate, she has amassed numerous honors, among them the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for lifetime achievement. Her latest collection, The Best of It: New and Selected Poems, earned Ryan the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Ryan read from The Best of It at the 2011 Robert Lowell Memorial Lecture, a semiannual lecture that honors American poet Robert Lowell, who famously taught Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, George Starbuck, and many other poets at BU in the 1950s. Also reading was Katherine Hollander (GRS'06,'14), whose poems frequently draw on historical subjects, German and Yiddish fairy tales, and Greek and Inuit myths for inspiration. Hosted by the Boston University Creative Writing Program on April 25, 2011.

UVU: Gordon S. Wood Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author
Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Gordon S. Wood will be the first lecturer in what will be the inaugural, annual Presidential Lecture Series at UVU. Wood will be speaking on two of his books, Empire of Liberty: A History of the Early Republic, 1789-1815 and Revolutionary Characters: What Made the Founders Different. Gordon Wood is one of the premiere historians of early America. His impact on the study of history in this country has been profound. It will be an honor to have a scholar of his stature come spend time with Utah Valley University faculty and students. We also welcome community members to attend his public lecture. It promises to be a most engaging event. I could not be more delighted that Professor Wood will be providing the inaugural lecture of the Presidential Lecture Series I am instituting. Wood is a professor of history emeritus at Brown University and an Alva O. Way University professor. He is the author of Creation of the American Republic, 1776-1787 which won the Bancroft Prize and the John H. Dunning Prize in 1970; and The Radicalism of the American Revolution, which won the Pulitzer Prize for history and the Ralph Waldo Emerson Prize in 1993. Wood has received numerous other awards and accolades for his academic contributions. The Presidential Lecture Series is a new initiative to help enhance the academic exchange on campus by bringing in some of the nations very best scholars to speak to UVU faculty, staff and students.
