THE ARABIAN GULF - Historical maps
THE ARABIAN GULF - Historical maps
Although one of the world's earliest surviving maps is painted on the wall of the Catal Huyuk in modern Turkey and dates from around 6300BC, the world's earliest maps were prepared on the Babylonian clay tablets around 2300BC. By 1000BC, the chinese were the most advanced, accurate and detailed mapmakers in the world, but they showed little interest in making world maps. The babylonian clay tablets showed the world as circular, flat disk and concept that the world is round was first known by the time of Aristotle (350 BC.) Greek and Roman map making reached its zenith with Claudius Ptolemy (85-165 CE), who produced a map of the 'Old World.' In 1154, Muhammad Al-Idrisi (1100-1165 or 1166), a Muslim scholar at the court of King Roger II in Cicily, drew his map of the known world (a 'mappa mundi'), known as the 'Tabula Rogeriana,' with the south at the top of the page. The earliest printed maps of Arabia were adapted from the "Geographia" of Claudius Ptolemy. His view of the Arabian Peninsula dominated understanding of the area for many years until European interests in the area grew and more reliable information was needed. In 1548, Giacomo Gastaldi produced the first seperate non-Ptolemaic map of Arabia in his version of the "Geographia" so this was the first contemporary map specifically of Arabia and it was the basis for Western mapping of Arabia and the Gulf region for many years. In many atlases Arabia was included as part of an overall Turkish Empire map, as in Europe ...

Ávila Spain
Ávila Spain
Ávila - A Video By Herman Ashley - Ávila may have been the ancient town known as Abula, mentioned by Ptolemy in his Geographia (II 6, 60) as being located in the Iberian region of Bastetania. Abula is mentioned as one of the first cities in Hispania that was Christianized, specifically by Saint Secundus (San Segundo). However, Ávila may have been the ancient Obila instead, while Abula may have been the town of Abla. Ávila is most known for the medieval city walls, that were constructed of brown granite in 1090: surmounted by a breastwork, with eighty-eight towers and nine gateways, they are still in excellent repair, but a large part of the city lies beyond their perimeter. The Gothic cathedral is integrated into the city's defences. It was built between the 12th and 14th centuries, and has the appearance of a fortress, with embattled walls and two solid towers. It contains many interesting sculptures and paintings, besides one especially fine silver pyx, the work of Juán de Arfe, dating from 1571. The churches of San Vicente, San Pedro and San Segundo are, in their main features, Romanesque of the 12th century. In the Gothic Monastery of Santo Tomás, erected by the Catholic Queen Isabella in 1482, is especially noteworthy the marble monument, carved by the 15th-century Florentine sculptor Domenico Fancelli, over the tomb of Prince John, the only son of Ferdinand and Isabella. en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org

Abaco Love Rush (2011)
Abaco Love Rush (2011)
The origin of the word Junkanoo is obscure. Some say it comes from the French "L'inconnu" (meaning the unknown), in reference to the masks worn by the paraders; or "junk enoo," the Scottish settlers' reference to the parades, meaning "junk enough;" or "John Canoe," the name of an African tribal chief who demanded the right to celebrate with his people even after being brought to the West Indies in slavery. - www.geographia.com

Faiz - Mushtaq Ahmad Yusufi on Faiz Ahmed Faiz (Hillarious)
Faiz - Mushtaq Ahmad Yusufi on Faiz Ahmed Faiz (Hillarious)
Mushtaq Ahmad Yusufi is considered one of the most prominent humourist and satirist writing in Urdu. Here you can see why as he decimates his colleague besides him while recollecting anecdotes with Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Ibn-i-Insha, who was himself a great Urdu satirist and humourist, wrote about Yousufi Sahib: ...if ever we could give a name to the literary humour of our time, then the only name that comes to mind is that of Yousufi! Another scholar, Dr Zaheer Fatehpuri, wrote: We are living in the 'Yousufi era' of Urdu literary humour... As Zamir Badayuni says in his artilcle on Yousufi: Mushtaq Ahmed Yusufi is basically a humorist who plays with the language and paints a picture of man, decentralized and imperfect. He combines all the styles, pre-modern, modern and post-modern. Rasheed Ahmed Siddiqui is pre-modern; Pitras is modern and Yusufi is post-modern. Rasheed Ahmed Siddiqui generally writes on cultural trends and style of living such as Tanga and Charpai. The language used by him is narrative and he paints the picture of our society in a very realistic way and without exaggeration. But his keen observation presents minute details with photographic details. He always tries to avoid the language of the masses or the language of the man in the street. Literary language is different from masses’ expressions. He writes in an elevated language full of literary references but he does not peep into the depths and social behaviours of man. But his humorous writings contain ...
