Philip Joel Urry (born January 5, 1973) is a musician known as a solo artist in addition to being the former bassist for the Christian rock group Newsboys. He uses the name Phil Joel professionally due to pronunciation issues with his surname.

Phil Joel was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He was lead singer and guitarist in the popular New Zealand band Drinkwater.

Though he had little experience with the instrument, the Newsboys offered him a position as bassist in August 1994. He said at the time, "I already know how to play a guitar with six strings, four should be a cinch." He also sang background and some lead vocals for the band.

In June 2000, Phil Joel released his first solo album, Watching Over You, on Inpop Records. This release is largely autobiographical,^[1] and of experiences with missions work in Third world countries.^[2] He supported this album with the Strangely Normal Tour accompanied by LaRue, Luna Halo, Earthsuit, V*enna & Katy Hudson (now known as Katy Perry). His second solo album, Bring It On, was released in November 2002 also on Inpop. His third album, The deliberatePeople. was released on November 18, 2005 in conjunction with Phil Joel and Heather Joel's newly founded Christian ministry, deliberatePeople. The album was praised for its stripped down rock,^[3] reminiscent of the Jesus Music era of Christian Music.^[4]

His deliberatePeople ministry website has journals containing a one-year Bible reading schedule and prayer guide. Both 12-month and 6-month Bible reading schedules are available on the dP website free of charge. The ministry also has notes, journal entries, and insights corresponding with the one-year Bible reading schedule starting January 1, 2006.

His wife Heather is a former host of All Access and Hit Trip on CMT. He met Heather at a radio station in her native Kansas when he'd only been in the country six weeks. They were married in 1996. They have two children: Phynley Elizabeth, born October 15, 2000 and Philip Eden (Eden), born April 5, 2004.

On Dec. 30, 2006, Phil Joel announced that he would be leaving the Newsboys, in order to devote more time to "personal goals" and family. It was then announced in mid-January 2007, that Phil Joel was in the studio finishing the deliberateKids. CD, which was scheduled to release May 1, 2007, from Indelible Creative Group.

In September 2008, Phil Joel released his fifth solo CD titled The New Normal.^[5] The CD is his third self produced album released on the deliberatePeople label. He is regularly touring and has joined with Focus on the Family to produce the Family Fight Night Tour.^[6]

In Fall 2010, Phil Joel released a new CD called deliberiteKids2. Long time friend and bandmate Peter Furler played some additional drums for the album.

Joel is on the Winter Jam 2012 tour with Peter Furler.

Peter Andrew Furler (born 8 September 1966) is an Australian musician, songwriter, producer, and record executive but is best known as the former lead singer for the Christian rock band Newsboys.

Furler was born in McLaren Vale, South Australia on 8 September 1966, the third of six children of missionaries Bill and Rosalie Furler.^[1] Furler formed the Newsboys, with friends George Perdikis, Sean Taylor, and John James.^[1][2] He has written and produced most of Newsboys' songs, as well as co-writing/producing songs for other recording artists. He also frequently collaborated with Steve Taylor. Furler was originally the band's drummer but became the band's lead singer after the departure of John James in 1997.^[2]

In July 1999 Furler, along with fellow Australians Dale Bray and Wes Campbell, founded Inpop Records.^{[3] [4]}

In 2009 Furler left the Newsboys and is now pursuing a solo career. Peter Furler continued to make special appearances on tour with the band up until his final appearance on 11 September 2009, in Orlando, Florida.^[5]

Furler played drums for Phil Joel's latest album deliberiteKids2.^[6]

He released his debut solo album, On Fire, on 21 June 2011 .^[7] The first single from the album, "Reach", was released to radio 25 March 2011 for sale on 19 April 2011.^[8] Furler is on the Winter Jam 2012 tour.^[9]

He married Summer Andrea LeFevre, daughter of Grammy award winning musician Mylon LeFevre on 12 March 1991.^[10]

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.

The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.^[1]

History[link]

The earliest recorded use^{[citation needed]} of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." ^{[2][dubious – discuss]} In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

It was also used as a term for a drug dealer in the 1950s and 1960s and can be seen in such media as Curtis Mayfield's "No Thing On Me", William Burroughs's novel Naked Lunch, and in the Velvet Underground song "I'm Waiting for the Man", in which Lou Reed sings about going to Uptown Manhattan, specifically Lexington Avenue and 125th Street, to buy heroin.

The use of this term was expanded to counterculture groups and their battles against authority, such as the Yippies, which, according to a May 19, 1969 article in U.S. News and World Report, had the "avowed aim ... to destroy 'The Man', their term for the present system of government". The term eventually found its way into humorous usage, such as in a December 1979 motorcycle ad from the magazine Easyriders which featured the tagline, "California residents: Add 6% sales tax for The Man."

In present day, the phrase has been popularized in commercials and cinema, featuring particularly prominently as a recurring motif in the 2003 film School of Rock.^[3][4][5][6]

Use as praise[link]

The term has also been used as an approbation or form of praise. This may refer to the recipient's status as the leader or authority within a particular context, or it might be assumed to be a shortened form of a phrase like "He is the man (who is in charge)." One example of this usage dates to 1879 when Otto von Bismarck commented, referring to Benjamin Disraeli's pre-eminent position at the Congress of Berlin, "The old Jew, he is the man."^{[7][dubious – discuss]}

In more modern usage, it can be a superlative compliment ("you da man!") indicating that the subject is currently standing out amongst his peers even though they have no special designation or rank, such as a basketball player who is performing better than the other players on the court. It can also be used as a genuine compliment with an implied, slightly exaggerated or sarcastic tone, usually indicating that the person has indeed impressed the speaker but by doing something relatively trivial.

Chantal Chamandy (born at Alexandria, Egypt)^[1] is a Canadian singer and entertainer based in Montreal, Quebec. She previously performed under the names Chantal Condor and Chantal.

Career[link]

Her first success was as part of Voggue, a disco duo she formed with Angela Songui. In 1980, the duo released its first self-titled album, which contains the singles "Love Buzz", "Here We Are" and their most successful single, "Dancin' the Night Away". In 1983, a second album was released on Matra Records, containing the singles "I Want To Dance" and "Sunstruck Lovers". Voggue disbanded in 1984.

After Voggue, she recorded as a solo act. She released the single "Hands Up" in 1985 on Epic Records using her full name Chantal Condor. The song would be remade by Canadian trio Sway in 1987 and become a big Canadian hit. The single led to an album deal with the label, and she released the album Chantal Condor in 1986. Her style was sometimes described as Italo disco. Off the album came the singles "Marinero" (backed with "Don't You Want My Love") and "Nightmare". She received a Juno Award nomination in 1986 for Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year,^[2][3] but lost to Kim Richardson.

In 1989, she dropped use of her last name, releasing Chantal, on the Columbia Records label. The single "A Little Lovin'" became her only charting single on Canada's RPM 100 Singles chart. In 1991 she became a member of the French-Canadian dance quartet Collage and appeared on their first and only album, but soon left the group. They then became a trio and the album was re-released without Chantal on the cover.

She did not release new material again until 2006, when she released a series of singles on her own independent label Ninemuse. She also used a number of unconventional strategies to get her name and material back into the public eye, including a self-financed marketing campaign on public transit and selling her single "Feels Like Love" for $1 a copy in the Dollarama chain of dollar stores, which resulted in the single selling over 10,000 copies and being picked up for sale in conventional record stores.^[1] She released Love Needs You, her first new album since 1989, later the same year. "Feels Like Love" received some airplay on U.S. Adult Contemporary radio.

On 7 September 2007, she performed a concert in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt in conjunction with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra.^[4] That performance was released on album and DVD in 2008 as Beladi, and was also made available for broadcast on PBS in the United States.

Chamandy is also credited with some small appearances in Canadian films.
