Ancona is the main city of the Region Marche and it's situated at the centre of the Adriatic coast, north of the Conero promontory. The name Ancona originates from the greek word "Ankon" which means "elbow" and was conceived by the first greek sailors (Siracusans) who founded the city in 387 BC. After 295 BC (Battle of Sentinum) it became a Roman Colony and Emperor Trajan (2nd century AD) used Ancona Port as starting point for his "Dacian Campaign". It became an independent commune in the 11th century turning into an important maritime republic and withstood the assaults of Venice and Frederick Barbarossa. After 1532 Ancona became part of the Papal States under Pope Clement VII. Pope Clement XII extended the port in 1730, and Ancona was declared a "free port". This brought to a period of economical and artistic splendour of the city. In 1797 Napoleon occupied the city and, after the Battle of Castelfidardo in 1860, it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Ancona Chicks
Ancona Chicks
Famous as layers of good sized white eggs, non-setters, these beautiful chickens have lustrous black plumage with white tips on every few feathers. They are about the same size to a little heavier than Leghorns. The dark color and active temperament make them a good bird to raise where hawks, owls, and animal predators are a problem because they do not show up like white breeds; and they are very quick and alert. They are an old breed in the Mediterranean Class, coming from the area around Ancona, Italy via England to the United States by the late 1800's. Baby chicks are very bright and snappy looking with their approximately half and half combination of black and white patches. www.mcmurrayhatchery.com

100 Greatest Singers: MARIO ANCONA
100 Greatest Singers: MARIO ANCONA
THIS PROJECT IS RESERVED ONLY FOR THE GREATEST! Italian baritone Mario Ancona one of the greatest? Please comment! Mario Ancona, Baritone (1860-1931) Gaetano Donizetti - La Favorita A tanto amor (Recorded 1907) My personal opinion: Certainly many singers convicted on stage as good actors, and vocal deficits became passabel, but it´s not easy to bring up this tolerance, if you hear them on records. Sometimes I´m really surprised about the fame of some singers from the so-called "Golden Age", but it seems it was another time and another fashion. Toti dal Monte in her 1939-recording of "Butterfly" is equally grotesque to Francesco d´Andrade´s 1906-recording of Don Giovanni´s "Fin ch´han dal vino". Just hear, and you know why. A great baritone of the first decades stood in the shadow of Ruffo: Mario Ancona. Today he is only known among connoisseurs. In my opinion, he was one of the three or four leading baritones in the Caruso-era. His sound-emission was beautiful, strenght and old belcanto style. He was high acclaimed by Leoncavallo after a "Pagliacci"-performance 1893 in London, where he sang Tonio (beside Melba and Fernando de Lucia). Critics admired him as well as the audience. In New York, he never received a negative review. He was declared as "Baritone con eleganza", and his 1907 recording of "A tanto amor" proves it. Elegance - how I miss it in the operatic world of today, and I mean vocal elegance, not expensive gowns and diamonds around the neck. Mario Ancona was a ...

Mario Ancona & Enrico Caruso - Pearl Fishers duet 1907
Mario Ancona (1860 - 1931)& Enrico Caruso (born Errico Caruso; February 25, 1873 August 2, 1921) sing this duet from Bizet's opera "The Pearl Fishers", in Italian. I think this is the most beautiful recording of the duet ever made. Their voices blend perfectly. Notice how the vibrato action of each singer also matches. When two great singers sing together that always happens. Many times today the singers' vibratos clash when singing duets.

Enrico Caruso and Mario Ancona -Au fond du temple saint (sung in Italian)
"Au fond du temple saint" from Bizet's Les Pecheurs de Perles" sung in Italian. Recorded 1906. The duet from The Pearl Fishers -Del tempio al limita (Au fond du temple saint) Caruso with Mario Ancona is as good or better than any that followed. Del tempio al limitar (In the depths of the temple), one of Bizet's finest inspirations. It is begun by Nadir, who describes the scene impressively. Believing themselves now cured of their old infatuation, they swear eternal friendship, pledging themselves to remain blood-brothers to the end.

Mario Ancona - I Puritani - Ah! per sempre io ti perdi - Bellini
Mario Ancona (1860 - 1931) was one of the most beautiful baritone voices in history. Once again we hear perfectly balanced vocal registration, clear vowels, balanced chiaroscuro, and very little constriction. The role of Silvio from Leoncavallo's Pagliacci was written for him. This is a true bel canto voice based on the true bel canto principles of balanced vocal registration. Enjoy!
