Afghan Forces are showing signs of progress as they take on a bigger security role in Helmand Province. The 2 Rifles Brigade Advisory Group based at Camp Gereshk have been working with the Afghan National Army on Operation Saafari a Palang which provides security around Gereshk. The 2 RIFLES soldiers took on just a supporting role as their Afghan counterparts assumed responsibility for planning and controlling the operation as well as taking the lead while on patrol.

3/14/2012 US Marines and Sailors with Combat Logistics Battalion 1 participated in a ground-fighting tournament. The tournament included four weight classes: 164 pounds and below, 165-179 pounds, 180-199 pounds and 200 pounds and above. The tournament was one of several sporting events held by CLB-1 to boost morale and encourage friendly competition between its companies during their seven month deployment to southern Helmand province. Journalists in Helmand Province are trying to improve perceptions of the Afghan Authorities. Radio and television services are encouraging the reporting of corruption, following a survey suggesting civilians believe it is getting worse. At a weekly press conference in Lashkar Gah the new chief of police assures locals that his security forces are winning the battle against the insurgency, and encourages investigations into corruption claims. The press has seen success in this area: In 2011 an investigation by local journalists accused the Mayor of Lashkar Gah of corruption. Although he wasn't charged, the strength of the claims and public pressure forced him out of office.

Royal Engineers in Helmand have been putting the finishing touches to the biggest bridge built on operations since World War Two. Spanning a width of almost seventy metres the bridge built by soldiers from 29 Armoured Engineer Squadron, part of 35 Engineer Regiment, will link communities on the outskirts of Gereshk. It is hoped the bridge will not only connect two local communities but also act as a catalyst for economic growth and security for many years to come.
