Kaptol, Zagreb
Kaptol is a part of Zagreb, Croatia in the upper town and it is the seat of the Roman Catholic archbishop of Zagreb.
History
The existence of Kaptol, the settlement on the east slope, was confirmed in 1094 when King Ladislaus founded the Zagreb diocese. The bishop, his residence and the Cathedral had their seat in the southeast part of the Kaptol hill. VIaška Ves was situated in the close vicinity of the Cathedral. Being under the bishop's jurisdiction, it was first mentioned in 1198. Kaptol Street ran from the south to the north across the Kaptol terrace with canons' residences arranged in rows alongside. As the Latin word for a group or body of canons is "capitulum" (kaptol), it is clear how Kaptol got its name. The canons also ruled this settlement.
The Cathedral was consecrated in 1217, but later in 1242 it was badly damaged during the Mongol invasion. After 1263 it was restored and rebuilt. As a settlement, Kaptol's shape was an unsymmetrical rectangle, which had a southern entrance in Bakačeva Street, and ended at its north end near the present day Kaptol School (Miroslav Krleža Elementary School).

Zagreb (Croatian pronunciation: [zǎːɡreb];names in other languages) is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. Zagreb lies at an elevation of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level. In the last official census of 2011 the population of the City of Zagreb was 790,017. The wider Zagreb metropolitan area includes the City of Zagreb and the separate Zagreb County bringing the total metropolitan area population up to 1,113,111. It is the biggest metropolitan area in Croatia with a population of over one million.
Zagreb is a city with a rich history dating from the Roman times to the present day. The oldest settlement located in the vicinity of the city was the Roman Andautonia, in today's Ščitarjevo. The name "Zagreb" is mentioned for the first time in 1094 at the founding of the Zagreb diocese of Kaptol, and Zagreb became a free royal town in 1242, whereas the origin of the name still remains a mystery in spite of several theories. In 1851 Zagreb had its first mayor, Janko Kamauf, and in 1945 it was made the capital of Croatia when the demographic boom and the urban sprawl made the city as it is known today.

Zagreb County (former)
Zagreb County (Croatian: Zagrebačka županija; Hungarian: Zágráb vármegye) was a historic administrative subdivision (županija) of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia. Croatia-Slavonia was an autonomous kingdom within the Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen (Transleithania), the Hungarian part of the dual Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its territory is now in northern Croatia. The capital of the county was Zagreb.
Geography
Zagreb County shared borders with the Austrian lands Styria, Carniola and Bosnia-Herzegovina and the counties of Varaždin County, Bjelovar-Križevci, Požega and Modruš-Rijeka (all in Croatia-Slavonia). The river Sava flows through the county. Its area was 7210 km² around 1910.
History
The territory of the Zagreb County was part of the Kingdom of Croatia when it entered a personal union with the Kingdom of Hungary in 1102, and with it became part of the Habsburg Monarchy in 1526. Zagreb County was re-established after it was liberated from Ottoman occupation in the early 18th century. In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon 1920), the county became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia). Since 1991, when Croatia became independent from Yugoslavia, the county is part of the Republic of Croatia.

I have been fortunate enough to have travelled quite extensively - some 96 countries so far (but only one new country since I moved to Croatia 20 years ago), and I have lived in 9 countries (UK, Germany, Russia, Georgia, Japan, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia and now Croatia), where 14 cities where places I called home for a while. And the best place to live from all my travels? None other than Zagreb in 2023, a city I never used to think much of, but these days, I think it is a fantastic place to live and visit. I have been fortunate enough to have travelled quite extensively - some 96 countries so far (but only one new country since I moved to Croatia 20 years ago), and I have lived in 9 countries (UK, Germany, Russia, Georgia, Japan, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia and now Croatia), where 14 cities where places I called home for a while.
And the best place to live from all my travels?
None other than Zagreb in 2023, a city I never used to think much of, but these days, I think it is a fantastic place to live and visit.
There are some raised eyebrows perhaps at my choice, especially after 13 years on Hvar and living in cool cities such as Munich, St. Petersburg and Hiroshima, but bear with me for the reasons why in our latest video, and find out why Zagreb is slowly becoming rather a very cool place to be.

I have been fortunate enough to have travelled quite extensively - some 96 countries so far (but only one new country since I moved to Croatia 20 years ago), and I have lived in 9 countries (UK, Germany, Russia, Georgia, Japan, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia and now Croatia), where 14 cities where places I called home for a while.
And the best place to live from all my travels?
None other than Zagreb in 2023, a city I never used to think much of, but these days, I think it is a fantastic place to live and visit.
There are some raised eyebrows perhaps at my choice, especially after 13 years on Hvar and living in cool cities such as Munich, St. Petersburg and Hiroshima, but bear with me for the reasons why in our latest video, and find out why Zagreb is slowly becoming rather a very cool place to be.

Kaptol, Zagreb
Kaptol is a part of Zagreb, Croatia in the upper town and it is the seat of the Roman Catholic archbishop of Zagreb.
History
The existence of Kaptol, the settlement on the east slope, was confirmed in 1094 when King Ladislaus founded the Zagreb diocese. The bishop, his residence and the Cathedral had their seat in the southeast part of the Kaptol hill. VIaška Ves was situated in the close vicinity of the Cathedral. Being under the bishop's jurisdiction, it was first mentioned in 1198. Kaptol Street ran from the south to the north across the Kaptol terrace with canons' residences arranged in rows alongside. As the Latin word for a group or body of canons is "capitulum" (kaptol), it is clear how Kaptol got its name. The canons also ruled this settlement.
The Cathedral was consecrated in 1217, but later in 1242 it was badly damaged during the Mongol invasion. After 1263 it was restored and rebuilt. As a settlement, Kaptol's shape was an unsymmetrical rectangle, which had a southern entrance in Bakačeva Street, and ended at its north end near the present day Kaptol School (Miroslav Krleža Elementary School).
