The Preakness must be right around the corner. It was opening day on Friday March 30, 2012 at Pimlico Race Course. That means it's 50 days and counting until Preakness Day. "It's really, really exciting," Maryland Jockey Club President Tom Chuckas told WBAL's Scott Wykoff in the winner's circle at Pimlico after the first race on opening day at Old Hilltop. "We're really positive about this meet. We've got a tremendous set of events coming up prior to Preakness week and obviously as you well know Preakness culminates it. But we are super excited. A lot of positive trends going on right now. A lot of changes with the guests and the guest services so I think this is going to be an exciting time for Maryland racing." I'll Have Another Gallops At Pimlico
O'Neill took a red-eye flight from California to watch I'll Have Another on the track at Pimlico Race Course Thursday morning and, in a matter of minutes, his Preakness-bound colt made the overnight trip worthwhile. With trainer Doug O'Neill arriving minutes before his horse left Stakes Barn D on Thursday morning, I'll Have Another was led to the track by Lava Man -- a $5 million earner during his career, who is a stable pony in retirement -- and galloped smartly once around the track under exercise rider Jonny Garcia. It was the first time the Flower Alley colt was allowed to gallop since he won the Kentucky Derby early Saturday evening at Churchill Downs. Troubled Racing, Pt. I
Troubled Racing, Pt. I
Historically, horse racing has been a major industry for the state of Maryland. But in the last decade, attendance and revenue has plummeted. Some believe it's the end of Maryland racing; but, if it fails, there more to lose than a business. Part I of "Horse Racing's Decline" details the family that constitute the staff at tracks and how they feel the track has evolved.

Ron Turcotte Visits Pimlico Ahead Of Preakness
In the week since Reddam Racing's I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby, trainer Doug O'Neill has been a gracious celebrity, taking part in many interviews, making appearances and posing for photos. Before his colt went to the track Sunday morning, O'Neill changed roles to a fan, happy to be able to chat with Ron Turcotte, Secretariat's jockey. Turcotte was in Maryland for the "Horses in Cinema" festival in Silver Spring and his tour of the Triple Crown races is being filmed for a Canadian documentary. O'Neill and Turcotte met briefly on Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs, but they had a much longer conversation at Pimlico. "Just to hang out here with him and talk shop with him was goose-bump stuff," O'Neill said. "He was telling us about his ride on Secretariat and how he was last going into the first turn and first coming out of the first turn. We're going to take some tips that he gave us about how to ride the race here and hopefully be successful in doing it.". Video shot and produced by WBAL's Scott Wykoff (May 13, 2012)
