Founded in 1871, the National Rifle Association promotes gun owners rights and the protection of the Second Amendment. According to its website, the NRA has nearly 4 million members. In addition the NRA boasts a lobbying arm (NRA-ILA) and a Political Victory Fund, which grades and ranks candidates for political office based on their supposed support for gun rights.
Led by director Chris W. Cox, the NRA engages in legislative battles across the country involving the scope of gun owners rights. In 2009, the NRA opposed Sonia Sotomayors nomination to the Supreme Court and said they would factor votes for or against her confirmation into their future Senate grades.
