Lung Cancer Symptoms,What To Look For
Lung Cancer Symptoms,What To Look For
Dr. Hanson explains some of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer, which include changes in cough, blood in sputum, weight change, or voice change. David S. Hanson, MD, FACP: Let us talk for a minute about the signs and symptoms of lung cancer. Lung cancer is a very common illness and it is oftentimes seen in people who abuse cigarettes or other forms of tobacco. So when a person has a new cough, blood in their sputum, unexplained weight loss, or changed in their voice, they need to inform the patient of this occurrence and the reason for that is, is that lung cancer is a very difficult disease to screen for. Well, there may be data that certain patients can benefit from Annual CAT scan screening, the majority of patients will develop their cancer in between even a yearly screening and some new symptoms mandate an evaluation. The other thing that is important to remember is that the symptoms may not seem to be related to your lungs. You may suddenly experience a lack of appetite, unexplained weight loss, new pain or swelling in an area that you do not associate with your chest. So if you have a change in your physical health and are a smoker, in particular, you should seek an evaluation with a physician. David S. Hanson, MD practices oncology and internal medicine in Baton Rouge and Zachary, Louisiana. Dr. Hanson graduated with an MD, 27 years ago. Secondhand Smoke and Lung Cancer
Secondhand Smoke and Lung Cancer
I just wanted to share some recent research on the topic of second hand smoke and lung cancer in people who have never smoked. It was a topic of interest to me at AACR and I had a chance to meet one of the authors of the 2009 paper. Int J Cancer. 2004 Mar;109(1):125-31. Secondhand smoke exposure in adulthood and risk of lung cancer among never smokers: a pooled analysis of two large studies. onlinelibrary.wiley.com Clin Cancer Res. 2009 Sep 15;15(18):5626-45. Lung cancer in never smokers: clinical epidemiology and environmental risk factors. clincancerres.aacrjournals.org or www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov There's an error in the video. I refer to one of the papers (CCR) as being published in 2011, when it was actually published in 2009. The author's manuscript was published online in 2011, two years after the print version.

Girl with lung cancer gets married 5 days before dying
Katie Kirkpatrick's story is a powerful reminder that we can still find joy in the midst of suffering tragedy by focusing on and celebrating the present moment. On Valentine's Day, 2002, Katie Kirkpatrick, then a freshman at Rochester College (a small Christian college in Rochester Hills, Michigan), was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Undaunted, Katie strove to keep up with her studies, but she suffered another setback in 2003 when she was diagnosed with an inoperable lung tumor wrapped around her pulmonary artery. Nonetheless, in 2004 the resilient Katie took part in champion cyclist Lance Armstrong's Ride for the Roses cancer fundraiser. On January 15, 2005, twenty-one-year-old Katie—the girl "with a contagious smile and unrelenting optimism" who had been battling cancer for three years—married twenty-three-year-old Lapeer County sheriff's deputy Nick Goodwin, her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, at Church of Christ in Hazel Park, Michigan. Photos were taken by Romain Blanquart. Background music: Marry Me by Train P/s: I don't know who has made this video clip, but I think I should share it to everyone.

Outsmarting Cancer - Targeted Drugs Fight Lung Cancer in North Shore Patient
When Wilmington resident Joan O'Beirne, 68, started experiencing shortness of breath during her daily activities, she had no idea what could be causing it or that she was about to become part of a pioneering research study. A widow with three grown children, O'Beirne has always been active and healthy, never smoking, playing tennis, and more recently watching her grandchildren every afternoon. When she noticed her shortness of breath, she consulted her primary care doctor who sent her to a lung specialist. Her early tests were inconclusive; she showed no sign of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Seeking an answer, O'Beirne's doctors ordered additional testing for cardiac disease and blood clots as well as a CT scan of her lungs. Finally, the CT showed scar tissue in the upper left lobe of her lung that a radiologist suspected might be a sign of cancer. A PET scan confirmed active cancer cells and she was sent to a lung surgeon for a biopsy to determine the extent of her cancer. After a surgeon advised that her tumor would require a surgical biopsy—a procedure that increased the possibility of spreading the cancer—O'Beirne sought a second opinion. She met with Massachusetts General Hospital and North Shore Medical Center thoracic surgeon and lung specialist, Dean Donahue, MD With O'Beirne as an active member of her own care team, she decided to first have Dr. Donahue and the interventional radiologist perform a needle biopsy and send the sample to pathology for ...
