A film, also called a movie, motion picture or photoplay, is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images due to the phi phenomenon. This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed rapidly in succession. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself. The contemporary definition of cinema is the art of simulating experiences to communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by the means of recorded or programmed moving images along with other sensory stimulations.
The process of filmmaking is both an art and an industry.
Super 8 or Super Eight may refer to:
A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. Although no consensus exists as to where that boundary is drawn, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". The term featurette originally applied to a film longer than a short subject, but shorter than a standard feature film.
The increasingly rare term short subject means approximately the same thing. An industry term, it carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Short is an abbreviation for either term. Short films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals and made by independent filmmakers for non profit, either with a low budget or no budget at all. They are usually funded by film grants, non profit organizations, sponsor, or personal funds. Short films are generally used by filmmakers to gain experience and/or prove their talent in order to gain funding for future films from private investors, entertainment companies, or film studios.
In the context of human society, a family (from Latin: familia) is a group of people affiliated by consanguinity (by recognized birth), affinity (by marriage), or co-residence (as implied by the etymology of the English word "family") and/or shared consumption (see nurture kinship). Members of the immediate family includes spouses, parents, brothers, sisters, sons and/or daughters. Members of the extended family may include grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and/or siblings-in-law.
In most societies, the family is the principal institution for the socialization of children. As the basic unit for raising children, anthropologists generally classify most family organization as matrifocal (a mother and her children); conjugal (a husband, his wife, and children, also called the nuclear family); avuncular (for example, a grandparent, a brother, his sister, and her children); or extended (parents and children co-reside with other members of one parent's family). Sexual relations among the members are regulated by rules concerning incest such as the incest taboo.
9.5 mm film is an amateur film format introduced by Pathé Frères in 1922 as part of the Pathé Baby amateur film system. It was conceived initially as an inexpensive format to provide copies of commercially made films to home users, although a simple camera was released shortly afterwards.
It became very popular in Europe over the next few decades and is still used by a small number of enthusiasts today. Over 300,000 projectors were produced and sold mainly in France and England, and many commercial features were available in the format.
The format uses a single, central perforation (sprocket hole) between each pair of frames, as opposed to 8 mm film, which has perforations along one edge, and most other film formats, which have perforations on each side of the image. The single hole allowed more of the film to be used for the actual image, and in fact the image area is almost the same size as 16 mm film. The perforation in the film is invisible to viewers, as the intermittent shutter blocks the light as the film is pulled through the gate to the next frame.

This is a 240 foot, 8 minute , 9.5mm silent 'home movie' UK film release from Peak Films around 1951. This appears to be an 'in house' comedy/glamour production with a photographer setting up his studio for some glamour photographs. I wonder who the photographer 'Freddie' and his model were? Are they still alive today? There was a shorter 100 foot (4 minute) version issued as number G76 in 9.5mm and also 16mm, maybe even std 8mm.

We filmed CHLOE - a Short Film to test Voigtlander and GH5 as a low light shoot. On a late night lens test, we decided to do a silhouette test which lead to doing a super short film. CHLOE' is a Short Film that we shot and edited within 2 hrs. Lead: Chloe Baldacchino Camera Assistant: Adam Reaver Filmed on: Panasonic GH5 Graded on: Film Convert Lens: Voigtlander 42.5mm & 17.5mm Aperture: f0.95 all the way through 15% Denoiser applied At time we found focusing on f/0.95 was very tricky. If the subject moves the focus becomes soft. We used an external monitor to look at focus consistently to ensure it's as sharp as possible. Panasonic GH5 adapted to the low light situation just fine, yes ofcourse there was noise. Noise that was fixable with 15% Red Giant Denoiser. You can also check o...

For one of my film classes we had to create a short film based on the rules of Dogme95, which was a Danish movement in the mid to late 90's. This is one that I created that I didn't use for my class, so I posted it here. Here are the rules of Dogme95 films as stated in the Vow Of Chastity: 1. Filming must be done on location. Props and sets must not be brought in. If a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where this prop is to be found. 2.The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. Music must not be used unless it occurs within the scene being filmed, i.e., diegetic. 3. The camera must be a hand-held camera. Any movement or immobility attainable in the hand is permitted. The film must not take place where the camera is standing;...

Here is an excellent amateur prize-winning film made on the Pathe 9.5mm 'home movie" film size. Titled "MECHANICAL OVERTURE", it was filmed by Graham Murray in 2000; using a 9.5mm Pathe Webo Special reflex cine camera, the superb colour provided by Fuji Velvia colour film stock. The film won Graham Murray first prize at the Calella Spanish 9.5mm Fiilm Festival in 2001. Sound is added to the 9.5mm film print wth a magnetic sound track - music from the actual fairground organs. A French Pathe-Baby 9.5mm silent "home movie" film from 1923, "La Pluie De Feu" (The Rain of Fire)", the catalogue description is 'Folklore dance. Very beautiful images with fire & reflections in the swimming pool'. No doubt rather erotic for male viewers at that time! (I wonder who the lady described as 'Miss Fire' really was?) Here's a great video of The Dragons, shot by Todd Nakamine with my camera. Todd has always had amazing musical taste, and he does it again here. Here is another 9.5mm optical sound film released by Pathescope in in the UK in October 1940. Cut to '6 reels' in length it runs for about 45 minutes on 9.5mm. The original cinema release ran for about 67 minutes. The film stars Edmund Qwenn, who plays a chemist, whose son Lawrence (played by Barry MacKay) is attacked on a train. He appears to have shot the man. His fiancee is played by Aileen Marson. Wally Patch plays a police sergeant. The is curently considered a 'lost' film, sadly only the shortened 9.5mm prints still exist. (The 35mm master and cinema prints were destoyed during the war). "THEY SURVIVE ON NINEFIVE!" Here is another 9.5mm sound film from my collection - one of the later optical sound shorts that Pathescope issued on the 9.5mm 'home movie' film gauge in 1956. Typical of the weird stuff that really only turns up on 9.5mm (well they didn't have much cash to get film rights!). This cinema cheapie is set in a seedy nightclub where one or two variety acts of the time are interspersed with Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan attempting a few gags. (By the way I think it is Milligan playing the trumpet later in this effort.) Whilst this 9.5mm optical sound release runs for about 24 minutes (a '3 reeler') - the original runs for just over half an hour. The 1933 British Lion feature film "Cleaning Up" featuring George Gee and Betty Astell seems now to be a 'lost' film on the 35mm cinema film format. However it was later released (sadly savagely cut) on the UK Pathescope 9.5mm 'home movie' film format as T.9130 in September 1938 - here is the complete 9.5mm sound 'home movie' release, running about 35 minutes.. In addition to cinema shorts, many cinema feature films were also released in the UK on the 9.5mm 'home movie' film gauge by Pathescope. Generally the features were shortened to four, five or six reels. Here is a 1934 Edgar Wallace thriller entitled "The Green Pack", directed by T. Hayes Hunter and starring John Stuart, Aileen Marson and Gary Marsh. It is a production from the 1930s British Lion company, originally formed to film Edgar Wallace thrillers. Their total 1930s film output is virtually all 'lost' on the 35mm cinema format (supposedly a direct hit during the war on their temporary film store of original material and cinema prints) Many of these features and shorts do still survive, (the features drastically cut though), on the 9.5mm 'home movie' film gauge. Here is another 9.5mm sound 'home movie' film release in October 1956 from the UK Pathescope company of a short British 1955 black & white cinema feature. Titled "The Man On the Cliff" it was directed by Robert Hartford-Davis and written & produced by the UK king of low budget programme fillers Edwin J. Fancey. It stars Ronald Leigh Hunt as a man who awakes on a cliff top with memory loss, finds a dead man and swops identities. The hotel receptionist is played by Adrienne Scott (actually E.J. Fancey's daughter). The film was released for the cinema by the E.J. Fancey company New Realm. More about E.J. Fancey and New Realm at:- http://www.pathefilm.uk/fancey1.htm
