David Andrew Leo Fincher (born August 28, 1962) is an American film and music video director. Known for his dark and stylish thrillers, such as ''Seven'' (1995), ''The Game'' (1997), ''Fight Club'' (1999), ''Panic Room'' (2002), and ''Zodiac'' (2007), Fincher received Academy Award nominations for Best Director for his 2008 film ''The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'' and his 2010 film ''The Social Network'', which also won him the Golden Globe and the BAFTA for Best Director. His next film will be 2011's ''The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'', an English-language adaptation of Stieg Larsson's novel of the same name.

Early life and career

Fincher was born on August 28, 1962 in Denver, Colorado, the son of Claire Mae (née Boettcher), a mental health nurse who worked in drug addiction programs, and Howard Kelly Fincher, who worked as a bureau chief for ''Life'' under the name Jack Fincher. When Fincher was two years old, the family moved to San Anselmo in Marin County, California. Fincher moved to Ashland, Oregon in his teens, where he graduated from Ashland High School. Inspired by ''Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'', Fincher began making movies at age eight with an 8 mm camera. Fincher eschewed the film school route, getting a job loading cameras and doing other hands-on work for John Korty’s Korty Films. He was later hired by Industrial Light & Magic in 1983, where he worked on productions for ''Twice Upon a Time'', ''Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi'', and ''Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom''. In 1984, he left ILM to direct a commercial for the American Cancer Society, that would show a fetus smoking a cigarette. This quickly brought Fincher to the attention of producers in Los Angeles and he was given the chance to direct the documentary ''The Beat of the Live Drum'' featuring Rick Springfield in 1985. Though he would continue to direct spots for companies like Revlon, Converse, Nike, Pepsi, Sony, and Levi's, Fincher soon discovered music videos and went on to direct many promos.

Propaganda Films

Set on a directing career, Fincher joined video-production company Propaganda Films and started off directing music videos and commercials. Like Fincher, other directors such as Michael Bay, Samuel Bayer, Meiert Avis, David Kellogg, Antoine Fuqua, Neil LaBute, Spike Jonze, Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, Paul Rachman, Zack Snyder, Gore Verbinski, and Alex Proyas honed their talents at Propaganda Films before moving on to feature films.

Features

''Alien 3''

After directing several music videos, Fincher's feature debut was ''Alien 3'' (1992). While it received an Oscar nomination for special effects, the film was not well received by critics or moviegoers. Fincher became involved with several disputes with 20th Century Fox over script and budget issues. In "The Director’s Cut", he blames the producers for not putting the necessary trust in him. After this, Fincher retreated back into the world of commercial and music video directing, including the video for the Grammy Award winning track "Love Is Strong" (1994) by The Rolling Stones.

''Seven''

In 1995, Fincher directed ''Seven''. The film, based on a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker, told the story of two detectives (played in the movie by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) tracking down a serial killer who bases his killings on the seven deadly sins. The film grossed more than $100 million domestically (over $300 million internationally). The chairman of New Line Cinema, Arnold Kopelson, originally refused to allow filming of the shocking climactic scene. With the aid of Brad Pitt, who stated that he would not be involved with the picture if its ending were changed, Fincher was allowed to film the original scene and use it in the final cut.

''The Game''

After the success of ''Seven'', Fincher went on to film ''The Game'' (1997). The story focused on a closed-off San Francisco businessman (played by Michael Douglas) who receives an unusual gift from his younger brother (Sean Penn), in which he becomes the main player of a role-playing game that takes over his life. The film had middling box-office returns despite being well-received by critics.

''Fight Club''

''Fight Club'' was a screen adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel of the same name about an insomniac office worker who opens up a club devoted exclusively to bare knuckle fighting for men. Featuring Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter, and ''Seven'' collaborator Brad Pitt, the 1999 film was an early disappointment at the box-office and received mixed reviews. ''Fight Club'' was panned by several critics and alienated audiences leading to its box office failure in the United States.

However, many critics and audiences later changed their perceptions and the film appeared on many 'best of the year' lists and soon developed a following. ''Entertainment Weekly'', which had originally given the film a D-, later ranked the DVD #1 on its list of 50 Essential DVDs. Exceptional sales have since established it as a cult film.

In 2006 the British magazine ''Total Film'' voted ''Fight Club'' number four in the 100 Greatest Movies of All Time, beaten only by ''Jaws'', ''Vertigo'' and ''Goodfellas'' at 3, 2 and 1 respectively.

''Panic Room''

In 2002, Fincher followed up with the thriller ''Panic Room''. The film earned over $92 million at the U.S. box office. The story follows a single mother (Jodie Foster) and her daughter (Kristen Stewart) as they hide in a safe room of their new house, away from criminals (Forest Whitaker, Dwight Yoakam and ''Fight Club'' collaborator Jared Leto) bent on finding a missing fortune. Fincher acknowledged ''Panic Room'' as a more mainstream thriller, describing the film, on the DVD's audio commentary, as "[basically] a date movie" and a "really good B movie" about "two people trapped in a closet".

''Zodiac''

Five years after ''Panic Room'', Fincher returned on March 2, 2007 with ''Zodiac'', an adaptation of Robert Graysmith’s books about the hunt for the Zodiac Killer that starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey, Jr., Anthony Edwards, and Brian Cox. The first of Fincher’s films to be shot digitally, the majority of the film was recorded on a Thompson Viper Film Stream Camera. However, high-speed film cameras were used for the Blue Rock Springs and Presidio Heights murder scenes for the slow-motion shots. It was originally to be released in the fall of 2006 but was pushed back after Fincher refused to cut 20 minutes off the film.

''Zodiac'' was one of the best-reviewed films of that year, with only two other 2007 films appearing on more top-10 lists (''No Country for Old Men'' and ''There Will Be Blood''). However, the film struggled at the box office in the U.S., earning only $33 million, but did well overseas with a foreign gross of $51.7 million. Worldwide, ''Zodiac'' was a decent success. Despite an aggressive campaign by the studio, expectations surrounding Robert Downey, Jr.’s supporting performance, Fincher’s direction and Vanderbilt’s adapted script, the film did not earn a single Academy Award nomination.

''The Curious Case of Benjamin Button''

A story about life and death, ''The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'' is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story of the same name. The film was Fincher’s third with Brad Pitt. The film started shooting in November 2006 in New Orleans, before moving on to the Virgin Islands, Montreal, and L.A.. Both ''Zodiac'' and this film are co-productions of Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros.. The budget for the film was estimated at $150 million, partly due to the CGI effects used to reverse the aging in Brad Pitt’s character. The film is the first PG-13 film directed by Fincher. It received 13 nominations at the 81st Academy Awards, including Fincher's first nomination for Best Director.

''The Social Network''

Fincher directed the 2010 film ''The Social Network'', about the legal battles of Mark Zuckerberg and the founding of Facebook. The film features an Oscar-winning screenplay by Aaron Sorkin, adapted from the book ''The Accidental Billionaires''. Featuring a young cast ensemble, the film is produced by Scott Rudin, Kevin Spacey and Michael DeLuca. Filming started in October 2009 and was released a year later, to critical acclaim. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross created the Oscar-winning soundtrack for the film, Fincher had long been a fan of Reznor's work in Nine Inch Nails, even putting a remix of "Closer" in the beginning of ''Seven'' and directing the music video for "Only". The film went on to win many awards, including four Golden Globes (including Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Director), three BAFTAs (including Best Direction), and three Academy Awards.

''The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo''

Fincher has begun filming of the American version of ''The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'', which is based on the book by Stieg Larsson, with a script written by Steven Zaillian. The film is being shot in Sweden with Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist, Robin Wright as Erika Berger, Stellan Skarsgård as Martin Vanger, and Christopher Plummer as Henrik Vanger. The film is expected to be released on December 21, 2011. Along with ''Dragon Tattoo'', Fincher and Zaillian have signed a two picture deal to also adapt ''The Girl Who Played with Fire'', and ''The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest'', which will be shot back to back if ''Dragon Tattoo'' is successful. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are currently creating the soundtrack for the film (their second collaboration with Fincher).

Future projects

''The Killer''

On November 1, 2007, ''Variety'' reported that Fincher was attached to do an adaptation of a French graphic novel called ''The Killer'' by Alexis Nolent, which was optioned by Paramount Pictures and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, with Pitt attached to star in the film. Scripted by Allesandro Camon, the film is about a top assassin, with his conscience getting the better of him, and a cop on his tail.

''The Reincarnation of Peter Proud''

An announcement was made on November 9, 2009 that Andrew Kevin Walker and David Fincher will re-team for the remake of the 1975 film ''The Reincarnation of Peter Proud''. This marks the fifth time Andrew Kevin Walker and Fincher will work together. Walker wrote Fincher's 1995 thriller ''Seven'', did uncredited rewrites for ''Fight Club'' and ''The Game'' and made a cameo appearance in ''Panic Room''.

''Ness''

On September 5, 2008, Firstshowing.net reported that Matt Damon is in talks to play Eliot Ness in ''Ness'' with Fincher lined up to direct an adaptation of the graphic novel ''Torso'' by Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko, and that the producers were looking for locations in Cleveland, Ohio.

''Heavy Metal''

''Variety'' reported that Paramount Pictures will make another animated film with David Fincher, based on the ''Heavy Metal'' comics. Fincher is set to direct one of the film’s eight or nine segments, which will also feature other directors such as animator Tim Miller and magazine owner and publisher Kevin Eastman directing another. The film is envisioned as being an animated, adult-themed R-rated film. On July 14, 2008 Paramount Pictures announced the movie is put on hold. On September 4, 2008, it was announced the film was to be made by Columbia Pictures, and a few of the directors attached to make a segment each includes Zack Snyder, Gore Verbinski and Guillermo del Toro, as well as James Cameron.

''20,000 Leagues Under the Sea''

Fincher is currently attached to direct ''20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'' for Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Jules Verne novel of the same name.

''Rendezvous with Rama''

Fincher has been attempting to make a film based on the science fiction novel of the same name written by Arthur C. Clarke with Morgan Freeman cast in the lead. In 2008, Fincher announced he was no longer making the film due to Freeman's health, but Freeman said in late 2010 that Fincher is "still part of the conversation."

''House of Cards''

Fincher has agreed to direct the first Netflix original television series, starring Kevin Spacey. The show will be called House of Cards and will air in late 2012.

Claudia Anne I. Winkleman (born 15 January 1972) is an English television presenter, film critic, radio personality and journalist.

Early life and family

Winkleman was born in Westminster, London, to a Jewish family, the daughter of Eve Pollard, former editor of the ''Sunday Express'', and Barry Winkleman (born 1939), former publisher of ''The Times Atlas of the World''. Her parents divorced when she was three; both remarried in 1979. Her stepfather is Sir Nicholas Lloyd, former editor of the ''Daily Express'', and her half-sister, from her father's second marriage, to children's author Cindy Black, is actress Sophie Winkleman, wife of Lord Frederick Windsor. She has a younger half-brother, Oliver Lloyd, from her mother's second marriage, to Nicholas Lloyd.

Brought up in the London suburb of Hampstead, Winkleman was educated at the City of London School for Girls and Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, obtaining an MA Hons degree in History of Art.

Television career

1991–2000

Winkleman's first major television job was in 1991, on the regional discussion programme.Central Weekend. In 1992, she began frequently to appear in the long-running BBC series ''Holiday'', and this continued throughout the mid-1990s. This culminated in a special documentary in which she travelled around the world for 34 days reporting from Japan, India, Costa Rica and Dubai.

Throughout this period, Winkleman also appeared as a reporter on other shows, particularly ''This Morning'' interviewing celebrities, including Michelle Pfeiffer, Tony Blair, Sir Alan Sugar and Harrison Ford. During the late 1990s, Winkleman presented a number of programmes on smaller digital channels. She had a stint on the cable channel L!VE TV, run by Kelvin MacKenzie and Janet Street-Porter, but soon left to pursue other projects. One programme made during this period was a short series titled ''Toilets'' shown on BBC Choice, which examined the "design, etiquette, psychology and hidden culture behind the humble loo". She also presented a number of gameshows including the dating show ''Three's a Crowd'', LWT show ''Talking Telephone Numbers'', the second series of Granada TV show ''God's Gift'' and ''Fanorama'', which featured a young David Mitchell as a team captain in his first television appearance. She was also an occasional team captain on a gameshow called ''HeadJam'', hosted by Vernon Kay.

2001–2006

Between 2002 and 2004, Winkleman began her first daily TV role when she hosted the BBC Three Entertainment update show ''Liquid News'', taking over from Christopher Price on the now defunct BBC Choice. She shared the presenting duties with Colin Paterson, and later Paddy O'Connell. The show featured celebrity interviews, for example Winkleman interviewed S Club 7 in May 2003. In 2003, ''Fame Academy'' appointed Winkleman to present a daily update show on BBC Three, in conjunction with its second series. Reporting from behind the scenes of the show, Winkleman conducted daily interviews with contestants, experts and celebrity pundits. She repeated the show in 2005 for the much shorter celebrity version ''Comic Relief Does Fame Academy''. Also in 2005, Winkleman co-hosted ''The House of Tiny Tearaways'', a BBC Three reality TV show, along with Tanya Byron, a British psychologist, writer and media personality. She also began hosting ''Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two'', a supplementary programme to ''Strictly Come Dancing'', taking over from Justin Lee-Collins.

Winkleman then presented several more reality shows including ''End of Story'' in 2004, a literature-based show, and ''Art School'' in 2005, a programme which saw five unlikely celebrities go through a two-week art course at the Chelsea College of Art and Design.

2007 - Present

More recently, Winkleman has presented a number of prime time programmes. In 2007, she took over from Cat Deeley as the main host for the third series of ''Comic Relief Does Fame Academy'', co-hosting with Patrick Kielty. She also presented the Eurovision Song Contest. She co-hosted coverage of the inaugural Eurovision Dance Contest 2007 alongside Graham Norton for BBC One in September of that year. She co-presented the UK selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 called ''Eurovision: Your Decision'', this time accompanied by Eurovision stalwart Terry Wogan. In March 2008, Winkleman rekindled her partnership with Patrick Kielty when the pair hosted the final leg of ''Sport Relief 2008'', announcing £19,640,321 as the final amount raised through viewers' donations. She has since spoken of how much she was moved by the experience.

In 2007, Winkleman was the face of Sky Movie Premiere's coverage of the 79th Academy Awards, repeating it for the 80th Academy Awards in 2008. The show was broadcast live in conjunction with the ceremony itself, running right through the night into the early hours of the morning.

Winkleman has made many guest appearances on panel and talk shows, including: ''Never Mind the Buzzcocks'', ''Would I Lie To You?'' (in which she appeared on David Mitchell's team, thus reprising their earlier gameshow collaboration), ''Have I Got News for You'', ''Friday Night with Jonathan Ross'', and ''Lily Allen and Friends''. In February 2008, she appeared on the British version of the comedy improvisational show ''Thank God You're Here'', hosted by Paul Merton. In it she had to improvise a scene in which she played a boarding school girl who had been called to the headmistress's office.

As part of the celebration for London's win for hosting the 2012 Olympics, Winkleman co-hosted the London 2012 party alongside Matt Baker on 24 August, on the BBC.

Winkleman narrates the BBC Three show ''Glamour Girls'', a documentary series focusing on Britain's glamour industry.

Winkleman was a panellist on Channel 4's ''The Big Fat Quiz of the Year'' 2008. and also appeared in The Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2009.

In 2009, Winkleman appeared as presenter of ''Let's Dance for Comic Relief'', a no-rule dance contest to raise money for Comic Relief which is similar to ''Strictly Come Dancing'', but with musical, pop and dance songs. In the same year, she presented a section of the Red Nose Day live telethon alongside Jonathan Ross.

In March 2009, Winkleman was announced as the host of the new series of ''Hell's Kitchen'' on ITV1. She fronted the nightly show live from the restaurant in East London in its fourth series in the spring.

On 14 November 2009, she stepped in on the main show of ''Strictly Come Dancing'' to present backstage, this was due to main presenter Bruce Forsyth being on sick leave. She co-hosted the show with Tess Daly and guest presenter Ronnie Corbett.

On 29 March 2010, Winkleman was named as one of the new co-presenters of ''The Film Programme'', replacing Jonathan Ross. The ''Guardian'' stated, through her recent hosting of Sky Television's coverage of The Oscars, Winkleman had "proved both a passionate and engaging advocate of cinema", while her husband Kris Thykier is a film producer with credits on several mainstream releases.

On 10 October 2010, she began hosting the ''Strictly Come Dancing'' results show on a Sunday, assisting Tess Daly.

In January 2011 it was announced that she would host King Of... a new comedy chat show for Channel 4 the series started on 17th June.

From April 2011, Claudia has become the voiceover for the "Next" clothing adverts.

Strictly: It Takes Two

It is through her work on ''Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two'' that Winkleman has gained the most public recognition. The programme, which started in 2004, was devised as a companion show to run conjoined with the second series of ''Strictly Come Dancing'', and continues to run to date. It follows a similar format to the one Winkleman made popular on ''Fame Academy'', and sees her deliberating and dissecting the ins and outs of the main competition, accompanied by an array of dance experts, assorted guests and the competitors themselves. The show is aired every weekday throughout the course of the series at 6:30pm on BBC Two.

The show's four judges sometimes appear on the programme, with the series seven line-up usually consisting of Craig Revel Horwood on Mondays and Fridays, Len Goodman on Thursdays and via telephone from LA on Mondays, plus Alesha Dixon occasionally appearing. Bruno Tonioli does not appear on the programme until the run of ''Dancing with the Stars'', the US equivalent he and Len also judge, has concluded. Until Arlene Phillips was replaced, she typically appeared on Fridays, with Revel Horwood reporting mid-week.

One of the show's features is "Len's Masterclass," a segment in which Head Judge Len Goodman demonstrates with Winkleman a dance move or two. Her hapless attempts to follow the steps are accompanied by much girlish giggling. It is estimated some three million viewers on average watch each episode.

Writing

Winkleman started her journalism career as a travel writer, with columns about her various worldwide excursions. She did so in ''The Sunday Times'' and ''The Independent'', but also contributed to the free daily London paper ''Metro'' in a similar capacity. As her television career - and family - evolved, she travelled less, and began to write more general work, opinion-led Lifestyle journalism about womanhood, sex and relationships. She wrote for ''Cosmopolitan'' and ''Tatler'' amongst others.

Between 2005 and 2008, she wrote a regular Wednesday column for ''The Independent'' called ''Take It From Me'', collating her various musings on the lighter sides of current affairs, celebrity news and anecdotes concerning her own life. These were mostly tongue-in-cheek diatribes on the shortcomings of men, and the pitfalls of juggling a professional life with that of being a mother. Her column often angled towards the more irritating aspects of life, with her husband regularly the subject of loving scorn. In 2007, this resulted in her husband writing her column instead, as something of a retaliation, though he did this only once.

On 9 April 2008, Winkleman wrote in ''The Independent'' about her having read this Wikipedia article when scouring the Internet looking for something to write about. In the column, she denied speculation previously included here that she was to have a third baby - she put her perceived new bulge down to the fact that she had not "...[banned] pasta from my world". She wrote of typing her name into Google and looking at this entry on Wikipedia. She was perturbed by the knowledge that there was any speculation that she was pregnant, when she wasn't, and - having rejected ideas from her friend Lucy that it was "...to do with the dress" or that "...they'd got her mixed up with Kate Thornton" - decided that the best course of action was to "have a slice of cake and a cup of tea".

Radio work

In April and May 2008, Winkleman hosted a six part comedy quiz series taking a humorous look into the week's celebrity gossip, called ''Hot Gossip''. The show was broadcast on a Saturday afternoon on BBC Radio 2; points were awarded to those who dished out dirt. The show featured many famous pundits, including Will Smith, Phil Nichol, Jo Caulfield, Rufus Hound and Jonathan Ross' brother, Paul.

She hosts a weekly show also on BBC Radio 2 every Friday night between 10pm and midnight called ''Claudia Winkleman's Arts Show'' consisting of interviews with people from the arts world, as well as reviews and debate. In July 2010, Winkleman sat in for Dermot O'Leary.

Charity and other work

In 2007, she travelled to Uganda for ''Comic Relief'', where the harsh realities of the AIDS situation there affected her greatly. Following this, she manned the phones at the BT Tower for the Disasters Emergency Committee in response to the problems in Darfur. In May 2007, she helped relaunch The National Missing Persons Campaign, and also supported a Christmas campaign by the charity Refuge, which aimed to stop domestic violence.

In June 2008, Winkleman was featured in ''Heat'' magazine with no make-up on, as part of a stand against the excessive airbrushing of prominent women, which she described as "pretty terrifying".

Winkleman has also presented several Award Ceremonies including the Purple Heart Awards, The HSBC Awards, and The Campaign Digital Awards. In addition she has hosted promotional videos for companies such as John Lewis Partnership, C&J; Clark and the British airport consortium BAA Limited.

On 18 March 2011, Winkleman was one of the presenters of BBC's Comic Relief.

Personal life

Winkleman married film producer Kris Thykier (born 1972), in Westminster, London in 2000. They live in Connaught Square, Westminster. They have three children: Jake Leonard (born March 2003, Westminster), Matilda Martha (born June 2006, Westminster) and Arthur (born 6 July 2011).

On 1 September 2008, The ''Daily Mail'' reported on problems in Winkleman's marriage. The newspaper reported that Winkleman "looked drawn and stressed on the doorstep as she greeted (her father and stepmother), who took her son out for the morning. She was not wearing a wedding ring". However, Winkleman said in February 2009, in an interview with ''Fabulous'' magazine regarding her marriage, "Everyone has problems, but you have one life and you have to sort things out. It's what everyone does".

Charles Peete "Charlie" Rose, Jr. (born January 5, 1942) is an American television talk show host and journalist. Since 1991 he has hosted ''Charlie Rose'', an interview show distributed nationally by PBS since 1993. He has also co-anchored ''CBS This Morning'' since January 2012. Charlie, along with Lara Logan, has revamped the CBS classic Person to Person, a news program during which celebrities are interviewed in their homes, originally hosted by the legendary Edward R. Murrow.

Early life

Rose was born in Henderson, North Carolina, the only child of Margaret Frazier and Charles Peete Rose, Sr., tobacco farmers who owned a country store. As a child, Rose lived above his parents' store in Henderson and helped out with the family business from age seven.. Rose admitted in a Fresh Dialogues interview that as a child his insatiable curiosity was constantly getting him in trouble. A high school basketball star, Rose entered Duke University intending to pursue a degree with a pre-med track, but an internship in the office of Democratic North Carolina Senator B. Everett Jordan got him interested in politics. Rose graduated in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in history. At Duke, he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. He earned a Juris Doctor from the Duke University School of Law in 1968. He met his wife, Mary (''née'' King), while attending Duke.

Career

After his wife was hired by the BBC (in New York), Rose handled some assignments for the BBC on a freelance basis. In 1972, while continuing to work at Bankers Trust, he landed a job as a weekend reporter for WPIX-TV. His break came in 1974, after Bill Moyers hired Rose as managing editor for the PBS series ''Bill Moyers' International Report''. In 1975, Moyers named Rose executive producer of ''Bill Moyers Journal''. Rose soon began appearing on camera. "A Conversation with Jimmy Carter," one installment of Moyers's series ''U.S.A.: People and Politics'', won a 1976 Peabody Award. Rose worked at several networks honing his interview skills until KXAS-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth hired him as program manager and gave him the late-night time slot that would become the ''Charlie Rose'' show.

Rose worked for CBS News (1984–1990) as the anchor of ''CBS News Nightwatch'', the network's first late-night news broadcast. The ''Nightwatch'' broadcast of Rose's interview with Charles Manson won an Emmy Award in 1987. In 1990, Rose left CBS to serve as anchor of ''Personalities'', a syndicated program produced by Fox Broadcasting Company, but he got out of his contract after six weeks because of the tabloid-style content of the show. ''Charlie Rose'' premiered on PBS station Thirteen/WNET on September 30, 1991, and has been nationally syndicated since January 1993. In 1994, Rose moved the show to a studio owned by Bloomberg Television, which allowed for improved satellite interviewing.

Rose was a correspondent for ''60 Minutes II'' from its inception in January 1999 until its cancellation in September 2005, and was later named a correspondent on ''60 Minutes''.

Rose was a member of the board of directors of Citadel Broadcasting Corporation from 2003 to 2009. In May 2010, Charlie Rose delivered the commencement address at North Carolina State University.

On November 15, 2011, it was announced that Rose would return to CBS to help anchor ''CBS This Morning'', replacing ''The Early Show'', commencing January 9, 2012, along with co-anchors Erica Hill and Gayle King.

Cameo appearances

Rose has appeared as himself in the 1998 film ''Primary Colors'', in a 2000 episode of ''The Simpsons'' and in the 2008 movie ''Elegy''. He and his show were also used in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums. He also appears as himself in the 2011 George Clooney directed film, ''The Ides of March''.

Accusations of conflict of interest

While hosting the 2002 Coca-Cola Company shareholders' meeting, Rose said "few companies are able to connect as completely with consumers in the way that Coca-Cola is. It is a privilege to be associated with [The Coca-Cola family] ... This is the business of Coca-Cola: being part of a family, being worldwide, doing well and doing good at the same time." Afterward, Coca-Cola agreed to become what Rose called "a leading underwriter" of ''The Charlie Rose Show'', paying "six or possibly seven figures." Even the Charlie Rose mugs used on his PBS show feature a Coca-Cola logo on one side. Although CBS News policy bars correspondents from doing commercials and product endorsements, the ''Washington Post'' reported CBS was "comfortable" with Rose's actions. Rose insists he "would never do a story on ''60 Minutes II'' about anybody who underwrites my PBS show."

Quiet influence

''The New York Times'' reported that Rose encouraged a discussion between the leaders of NBC and Fox, that led eventually to a mutual reduction in ad hominem attacks between Keith Olbermann and Bill O'Reilly on their respective news programs.

Rose has attended several Bilderberg Group conference meetings, including meetings held in the United States in 2008; Spain in 2010; and Switzerland in 2011. These unofficial conferences hold guests from North America and Western Europe, most of whom are political leaders and businessmen. Details of meetings are closed off to the public and strictly invitation-only, and critics speculate the controversial nature of these meetings of highly influential people. Accusations from conspiracy theorists against The Charlie Rose show claim that it has become the US media outlet for Bilderberg.

Personal life

Rose's twelve-year marriage to Mary Rose (née King) ended in divorce in 1980. Mary is the sister-in-law of Morgan Stanley Chairman John J. Mack. Since 1993, his companion has been socialite and city-planning advocate Amanda Burden, a stepdaughter of CBS founder William S. Paley.

On March 29, 2006, after experiencing shortness of breath in Syria, Rose was flown to Paris and underwent surgery for mitral valve repair in the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital. His surgery was performed under the supervision of Alain F. Carpentier, a pioneer of the procedure. Rose returned to the air on June 12, 2006, with Bill Moyers and Yvette Vega (the show's executive producer), to discuss his surgery and recuperation.

In a 2009 Fresh Dialogues interview Rose described his life as "great and glorious." He added, '"I get up every morning with a new adventure. The adventure is fueled by interesting people. I get a chance to control my own destiny. I do something that is immediately either appreciated or not. I get feedback."

Rose owns a farm in Oxford, North Carolina, an apartment overlooking Central Park in New York City, a beach house in Bellport, New York, an apartment in Washington D.C..and an apartment in Paris, France.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois. His directorial debut was the 1980 comedy, ''Where the Buffalo Roam'', which was loosely based on stories by Hunter S. Thompson and starred Bill Murray as the writer. He also directed 1984's ''The Wild Life''.

Patricia Rooney Mara (born 1985) is an American film and television actress. Mara made her acting début in 2005 and has gone on to star in films including ''A Nightmare on Elm Street'', the remake of the 1984 horror film, and ''The Social Network''. Mara will portray Lisbeth Salander, the title character in ''The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'', the first of three Sony Pictures films based on Stieg Larsson’s ''Millennium'' book series.

Mara is also known for her charity work. She oversees the charity Faces of Kibera, which benefits orphans from the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya, one of the largest slums in Africa. She is also the younger sister of actress Kate Mara.

Early life

Mara was born and raised in Bedford, New York, a town in Westchester County, a suburb of New York City. She is the daughter of Timothy Christopher Mara, the vice president of player evaluation for the New York Giants, and Kathleen McNulty (née Rooney). She has three siblings: Daniel, Conor and Kate.

Mara is of Italian (from her maternal grandmother) and Irish descent; the Rooney family trace their Irish ancestry to County Down. Mara is the great-granddaughter of Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, Sr. and New York Giants founder Tim Mara. Her paternal grandfather, Wellington Mara, was the long-time co-owner of the Giants, succeeded by her uncle, John Mara. Her maternal grandfather, Tim Rooney, has run Yonkers Raceway in Yonkers, New York since 1972. She is the grand-niece of Daniel Rooney, chairman of the Steelers, the United States Ambassador to Ireland, and the co-founder of The Ireland Funds charitable organization.

Mara graduated from Fox Lane High School in 2003, and then traveled to Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia in South America for four months as part of the Traveling School, an open learning environment. She attended the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University, where she studied psychology, international social policy, and nonprofits. She graduated in 2010.

Mara was inspired to act by going to see musical theatre and by watching old movies, like ''Gone with the Wind'' (1939), ''Rebecca'' (1940), and ''Bringing Up Baby'' (1938), with her mother. She also wanted to be like her older sister, Kate Mara, a professional actress. Mara resisted pursuing acting as a child, stating to ''The Journal News'' that "it never seemed that honorable to me, and I guess I was always afraid that I might fail." She won the role of Juliet, in ''Romeo and Juliet'', after being signed up to audition by a friend, and acted in a few student films while at NYU. Mara then began pursuing a career in acting.

Acting career

Mara made her professional acting debut in a bit-part in the 2005 direct-to-video horror film ''Urban Legends: Bloody Mary'', which starred her sister. She found work in television, appearing on the New York City-based drama ''Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'' in 2006, as a girl who dislikes fat people. She guest-starred on the legal drama ''Women's Murder Club'' in 2007, and played a drug addict in an episode of ''The Cleaner'' in 2008. Mara appeared in the feature films ''Dream Boy'' and ''Friends (With Benefits)'' that year, and guest-starred as Megan for two episodes of NBC's ''ER'' in 2009.

Mara landed her first lead role in the film ''Tanner Hall'', starring Amy Sedaris and Tom Everett Scott, a story of four teenage girls set in a New England boarding school. Mara played Fernanda, who has an affair with a married family friend (Tom Everett Scott). The coming-of-age film was the debut feature by filmmakers Tatiana von Fürstenberg and Francesca Gregorini. Mara dropped her first name, Patricia, to be known professionally by her middle name after working on the project. "I never really liked my first name," Mara stated to ''Paper'' magazine. "I never felt like a Tricia. And Rooney is more memorable".

Mara's experience lead to other film work. She appeared in the comedy ''Youth in Revolt'', starring Michael Cera and directed by Miguel Arteta, based on the 1993 cult novel of the same name by C.D. Payne. Mara played Taggarty, the love interest of Cera’s best friend. Her character tries to sleep with 50 guys before she goes to college. Mara had auditioned for the starring role, but was offered the smaller part when the lead went to Portia Doubleday.

Mara appeared in the 2009 independent film ''Dare'' as Courtney, the best friend of Alexa (Emmy Rossum), a high school student set on expanding her life experience. She also filmed ''The Winning Season'' that year, starring Emma Roberts and Sam Rockwell, playing a high school basketball player in a story similar to ''The Bad News Bears''. Her character has an affair with a 40-something year old shoe salesman (Kevin Breznahan). ''Dare'' and ''The Winning Season'' premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Mara was included on ''Filmmaker'' magazine's list of "25 New Faces of Independent Film" that year.

Mara starred in ''A Nightmare on Elm Street'', a 2010 remake of the 1984 horror film of the same name. She played the protagonist Nancy Holbrook, based on the original film's Nancy Thompson, a teenage girl who is eager to leave town after graduating from high school. Mara began shooting the film in Chicago on May 5, 2009, directed by Samuel Bayer. Mara told ''Filmmaker'' that she felt that the remake's Nancy was "completely different from the original" and could be described as "the loneliest girl in the world". The film was released on April 30, 2010. Depending on its box office performance, Mara will appear in a sequel to the remake, continuing her role as Nancy.

Mara appeared at the Hamptons International Film Festival in October 2009 as part of its Breakthrough Performers Program, where she was tutored alongside Zach Gilford, Emmy Rossum and Emma Stone by Sharon Stone. She appeared in the 2010 film ''The Social Network'' by David Fincher, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Brenda Song and Justin Timberlake. Her character breaks up with Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, which inspires him to start the social networking website.

In August 2010, Mara was cast as the lead in an upcoming film adaptation of the ''Millennium'' book series by Stieg Larsson. She won the role over several other actresses, including Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence and Katie Jarvis, after auditioning with a rape scene from the film, and performing multiple screen tests. David Fincher will direct the first of three films, based on the novel ''The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'', with Scott Rudin producing; ''The Girl Who Played with Fire'' and ''The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest'' will also be adapted. Fincher convinced executives at Columbia Pictures to cast Mara for the part. She plays Lisbeth Salander, a damaged bisexual computer hacker who helps journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) attempt to solve a series of murders.

''The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'' began shooting in Sweden in September 2010, and has a release date of December 21, 2011. Mara doesn't consider the film to be a remake, but an interpretation of the novel. "I plan on giving my interpretation of the character", she stated to ''Variety''. Mara's long brown hair was cut short and dyed black, in a style reminiscent of 1970s punk and 1980s goth fashions. She also had each of her ears pierced four times, and had her lip, brow, nose, and nipple pierced for the role. Her eyebrows were bleached, and she wears a temporary dragon tattoo.

Mara will work with filmmaker Francesca Gregorini again, the writer and director of ''Tanner Hall'', in the film ''Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes''. Mara will play a troubled teenager, hired to babysit a lifelike doll in the independent drama. The project will be Mara's first time co-producing a film, and will begin shooting in mid 2011.

Faces of Kibera

Mara oversees the charity Faces of Kibera, which provides housing, food, and medical care for orphans in Kibera, a slum in Nairobi, Kenya where approximately 1 million people live in a single square mile. The charity's goal is to build an orphanage in the region, for which 6 acres of land have been purchased. The charity auctions memorabilia from the Steelers and Giants, as well as training camp events on eBay to raise money.

Mara visited the area as a volunteer in 2006, at age 21, and was moved to help the orphans, many whose parents have died from AIDS and HIV-related illnesses. She began the charity due to her frustration with, according to Mara, the growing number of nonprofits that are just business opportunities. "The people who need help aren’t really getting it. So I started my own", she told ''Interview'' magazine in 2009. Mara was not really working yet when she started the charity, so now finds it challenging to balance her charity work with her acting career. "I need to do both; I can't just do acting,“ she stated to ''The Journal News''.

Personal life

Mara moved to Los Angeles in early 2007, and lived with her sister temporarily. Although they do not live together anymore, Mara felt that the experience brought them closer together, and they still regularly discuss the film business and movie scripts. Mara described American football as "....the glue that holds our family together," to the ''New York Post''. She includes Gena Rowlands among the actors that inspire her, especially her performances in ''A Woman Under the Influence'' (1974) and ''Opening Night'' (1977).
