Clippers advance, knock out Grizzlies 82-72

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Chris Paul played with an aching right hip and Blake Griffin's sprained left knee stiffened up during the game. If the Clippers were truly a two-man team, then they would have been in trouble facing elimination by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Good thing the guys on the Clippers' bench want to keep playing.

Kenyon Martin's 23-footer put the Clippers ahead to start a fourth quarter in which backups scored 25 of their 27 points, helping Los Angeles' other NBA team beat Memphis 82-72 Sunday and advance to the Western Conference semifinals.

''Our bench was our MVP,'' Clippers guard Randy Foye said. ''They realized what they had to do. We had a lot of guys hurt, so we just continued to grind.''

The Clippers reserves outscored Memphis' bench 41-11 to help Los Angeles clinch its first playoff series since 2006 and only the franchise's third overall. They also helped the Clippers avoid becoming the ninth NBA team to blow a 3-1 lead in a best-of-seven series and now they head to San Antonio for a second round starting Tuesday night.

Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said they will regroup Monday and focus on the Spurs then. He wanted his team to enjoy the series win for a little bit.

''But obviously another big challenge for us,'' Del Negro said.

Chris Paul scored 19 points despite his strained right hip flexor, and he was the only starter to score in the fourth quarter. Paul was so confident of victory he bought plane tickets for his wife and son to San Antonio on Saturday.

''I felt like we should have won earlier,'' Paul said. ''But it doesn't matter. As long as you win, I think it is a step in the right direction for our franchise.''

Rudy Gay and Marc Gasol each had 19 for Memphis, which lost a Game 7 at Oklahoma City a year ago in the second round of the playoffs. Zach Randolph had a game-high 12 rebounds.

''Unfortunately, no one on the bench stepped up and helped us,'' Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said.

The Clippers had missed two chances to clinch this series, including an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter Friday night. That's why Martin huddled the Clippers together at the start of the fourth quarter Sunday to make sure it didn't happen again.

''They did what they had to do, they came and stole home court back on our floor...,'' Martin said. ''We had a chance to close it out. We knew we let it go, an opportunity get away.''

The Clippers trailed 56-55 after three quarters until Martin's jumper started an 11-2 run, and they led by as many as 11 down the stretch. Los Angeles finished off the win by hitting 9 of 10 free throws in the final 3:26. The Clippers also managed to outrebound the Grizzlies 46-44 for only the second time this series.

Memphis got away from the inside-out approach that won the last two games. The Grizzlies outscored the Clippers 36-24, but Randolph said they took far too many jumpers instead of feeding the ball to Gasol and himself.

''You have to take your hats off to them because they played good,'' Randolph said of the Clippers. Chris had a good game, and their bench played terrific.''

The Grizzlies also went cold at the worst time. They hit a series-low 32.5 percent (25 of 77) Sunday and only 4 of 18 in the fourth. After Gasol drove through the lane for a one-handed dunk with 3:09 left, Memphis didn't score another field goal. They missed all 13 3-pointers.

''It was Game 7 pressure and jitters,'' Hollins said. ''We wanted to do well. We just wanted to let it rip. You walk up here and have two strikes on you in the ninth inning and you have to let it rip. And we didn't.''

The Clippers and Grizzlies scrapped and fought for every ball with each possession feeling like a knockdown, drag-out fight. Memphis should have had an advantage against the hobbled Clippers, who were tipping off when they usually eat breakfast on the West Coast. Blake Griffin scored only eight points and looked tentative before spending all but 99 seconds of the fourth on the bench cheering.

''It's partly the way our second group was playing,'' Griffin said. ''When I came back in, there was a play where I got caught. I couldn't do what I wanted to do physically. I don't want to dwell on that. My teammates did an unbelievable job, and it's a great feeling to get that first series win.''

And the Grizzlies are done after wasting their first home-court advantage by blowing a 27-point lead in the opener and then failing to tap into the energy of a sold-out crowd in the decisive seventh game. Gay called it very frustrating to lose in the first round after taking Oklahoma City to seven games in the second round last year with the 27-point blown lead the sore spot.

''This series would've been totally different if we had won that game,'' Gay said.

Notes: Del Negro now is 1-1 in Game 7s, losing his first in the 2009 first-round while coaching Chicago against Boston. Hollins now is 0-2 in Game 7s. ... Griffin finished playing 28 minutes and was 3 of 11 from the floor. He had four rebounds. ... Mike Conley missed his first seven shots for Memphis and finished with seven points with five assists.

Props to the Clips & Griz for a nasty dog-fight of a game. The refs swallowed their whistles and let both teams play street ball. I'm not saying it was unfair, but it was just odd. One of the most physical games I've ever watched.
      • Santiago 3 days ago
It was weird to watch compared to other playoff games. If I'm a Grizzlies fan I'm angry there were a bunch of no-calls in the fourth, but at the same time guys were taking and miss bad shots.

Santiago, Did you not watch games 2-6 NO CALLS ON THE GRIZZLIES???? Do you not remember how the Clippers got 6 technicals in 2 minutes. DId you forget the technical reggie evans got for high fiving blake griffin? All the pushes the clippers got and got no calls. The traveling call in game 6 called a foul, the clean block by CP3 called a foul.... YEA you mean CLIPPERS fans are andy there were a bunch of no calls not the grizzlies. The Grizzlies had the refs on their side the whole time bro

Grizz had to have had the worst late game stretch in a series in playoff history.
    • chica_l.a.  •  3 days ago
Wow, I guess the Grizz could never actually recover after that Game 1 meltdown. I thought they would be hungrier than that, especially after last season. LAC vs SAS, no predictions but SA is going to be very difficult.

The scene at the Memphis stadium on the waning minutes of the seventh game was something hard to forget. The silence was deafening, The fans realized their team will lose. Their coach was pacing back and forth on the sidelines and seems to have gotten out of options and tricks.

It was fun to see, since they were the same fans talking about how Memphis is too good, is the better team, that they were going to play the spurs not even thinking they could lose game 7.

I don't recall previous NBA playoff games being so physical. The difference in the NHL between regular season and playoffs has always been substantial but I don't remember the NBA being such brawls. The intensity is impressive but the games don't seem as "pure". Just me?
      • john morris 3 days ago
The Grizzles just copied the playbook of the old Detroit Pistons, who were the dirtiest (most 'physical') team there ever was, and used it to beat much more talented teams like the Lakers.

      D. Jordan needs to "show up" 4 the Clips to get off 2 a good start. Bottom line.

Clippers earned the win. The Grizzlies were a team everyone worried about playing and for the Clippers to win this type of series it just shows how legit this team is. Them winning game Seven after losing the last two the way they did shows they team can bounce back. The Spurs better take the Clippers very serious otherwise we will be seeing another upset.

are you and idiot.. clippers are going to get swept by the spurs.. clippers are just lucky the girizlzies blow games
      • M and S 3 days ago
Tim ; Slow down and take your time, this isn't the same as a text. And no they can't get by SA.
      • I Need A Hill 3 days ago
@Keene - Are you an idiot or what. Clippers went to San Antonio earlier in the season and manhandled the Spurms. If it was luck on the Clippers part then so be it. Luck has never been a bad thing to have in sports. Everyone said that nobody wanted to face the Grizzlies in the 1st round but the Clippers did it and prevailed, something that this same San Antonio team couldn't do last year losing in the 1st round to the same Grizzlie team that the Clippers just beat.

My name is Glipglorp from the planet Splarn in the 4th Nebula. We received a transmission last night which we would like the earthling's help decoding. It read simply: "CLIPPERZ, BEOTCH!".

We are not sure what this means, and we ask that you send your leader to explain this to us. Until that day, we will assume that all planet earth believes "CLIPPERS, BIZZNATCH!"

      Greetings from Splarn.

this is an experienced team they are going up against, a team that is well rested and deep. Also keep in mind this was a very physical series and they are all bruised up. Going against Tim, Toni and Manu wont be easy. Spurs in 5!!!!

Give the Clippers credit. They are doing magic tricks with their bench. Just think how they would have been with Mr Billups

Way too physical a series. Best team came out on top though. Here we come.

Congrats to Vinny Del Negro. LA Clippers did better than Bulls. Bulls got knocked out in the first round by 8th seeded team. I am happy for Vinny del Negro. He was treated very shabbily by Paxon when he was a Bulls coach. Thibb's performance was worst than last year. Last year Bulls beat Pacers, Atlanta Hawks and then lost to Miami Heat. Bulls four starters are injured which will cost close to 55 million dollars to Bulls organization. No big deal, they will raise the ticket rates to recover the loss.

All jokes and taunts aside, the refs made clear from the beginning that this was going to be a physical series. BOTH teams were guilty of flopping and crying - the reason (and i hate to admit this) the Grizzlies were the beneficiaries of most of those calls is because they kept their crying to a minimum - they got back and played basketball. We kept complaining and drawing it out to the point the refs started to call t's for every little team. In Game 6 i kept yelling for the Clips to stop crying and play ball. We lost that game because Memphis wanted it more. I'm glad to see that we didn't complain, didn't cry, kept flopping to a minumum in game 7, and guess what - we won because we got up and played basketball.

Memphis I tip my hat to y'all, I really thought you were going to win that game. Your team really does play unselfish TEAM ball, plays hard, and will only get better. I look forward to this being a rivalry for many years to come.

The Clippersw still need a big man in the center, right now they have three forwards and two guards. Maybe they can convince Marc Gasol to come to L.A.

Yawn... Spurs are the most boring team ever. Go Clips!

Could you imagine if the Lakers and the Clippers met in the WCF, and they played at the Coliseum with 100,000 fans? I would love to see them set up each teams court when they are the home team

Del Negro looked lost in game 6, but did a great job of letting the bench close the game yesterday.

Zach Randolph, Mike Conley and Maurice Speights talked a lot of trash while they were up. CP3 kept his cool and took over. I'm not sure why the Clippers even bothered guarding Tony Allen, he has the worst jumper out of any shooting guard in the NBA.
