2008 05-01 Outer Critics Circle Awards - Shrek: The Musical
* OUTER CRITICS CIRCLE nominations announced. * YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN snags 10 nominations. * SHREK coming to Broadway. * BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES to play Shrek. Read more at www.BroadwayBulletin.com The Outer Critics Circle is the organization of writers and commentators covering New York theater for out-of-town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway. The group recently announced the nominees for this years Outer Critics Circle awards. My favorite of the nomination this year has got to be Jessica Jahn, Michael Bottari & Ronald Case for best costume design for the kitschy and hysterical Die Mommy Die, written by and starring the lovely Charles Busch. As for the top nominations, South Pacific picked up 8, Les Liasons Dangereuses snatched 9 and surprisingly, Young Frankenstein, a show that has received lukewarm reviews and has been struggling at the box office, leads the pack with 10. The winners will be announced on Monday, May 12th, while the annual awards ceremony will be held Thursday, May 22th at 4PM at the legendary Sardi's Restaurant. Information has been trickling out about Shrek The Musical, set to premiere November 8th at the Broadway Theatre. While additional casting has been announced, a group of seasoned Broadway veterans like Jenn Cody, and her sister in law, Sutton Foster have already signed on. The title role of the green ogre will be played by Brian d'Arcy James, the singing actor recently seen in the Off-Broadway musical Next to Normal ...

An Evening with Groucho - Frank Ferrante
Award-winning actor/director/playwright Frank Ferrante recreates his PBS, New York and London acclaimed portrayal of legendary comedian Groucho Marx in this fast paced 90 minutes of hilarity. The two-act comedy consists of the best Groucho one-liners, anecdotes and songs including "Hooray For Captain Spalding," and "Lydia, the Tattooed Lady." The audience literally becomes part of the show as Ferrante ad-libs his way throughout the performance in grand Groucho style. Accompanied by his onstage pianist, Jim Furmston, Ferrante portrays the young Groucho of stage and film and reacquaints us with the likes of brothers Harpo, Chico, Zeppo and Gummo, Charlie Chaplin, WC Fields, Greta Garbo, Marx foil, Margaret Dumont and MGM's Louis B. Mayer. A show perfect for all ages! Frank Ferrante (Groucho) is an actor, director, and producer described by The New York Times as the greatest living interpreter of Groucho Marxs material. Animal Crackers and A Night at the Opera co-author Morrie Ryskind called him the only actor aside from Groucho who delivered my lines as they were intended. Discovered by Grouchos son Arthur when Frank was a drama student at the University of Southern California, Frank originated the Off-Broadway title role in Groucho: A Life in Revue (written by Arthur) portraying the comedian from age 15 to 85. For this role, Frank won 1987s New Yorks Theatre World Award and was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award. He reprised the role in Londons West End and was ...

BD Wong - OCA Pioneer Award Recipient 2011
For his role in the Broadway production of M. Butterfly, actor BD Wong is the only actor to win a Tony, a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Clarence Derwent Award, and a Theater World Award for a single performance. Wong's movie and television work continues to successfully break out of the Asian-American cinema stereotype. Wong includes among his accomplishments as a LGBT activist; the publication of "Following Foo: the electronic adventures of the Chestnut Man", a memoir detailing a gay's couple's journey towards parenthood with the assistance of a surrogate mother.

BD Wong
Tony Award-winning actor BD Wong is one of Americas most versatile performers. He plays forensic psychiatrist, Dr. George Huang, on NBCs Law and Order: SVU. His character, Father Ray Mukada, on the HBO series, Oz, made him a cult favorite. Wongs impressive list of film credits include Father of the Bride, The Freshman, Seven Years in Tibet and Disneys Mulan, but it is in the theater that Wong first gained national attention. His Broadway debut in M. Butterfly earned him the Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Theatre World Award, Clarence Derwent Award and Drama Desk Award. He is the only actor to have won all five awards for a single role. In his book, Following Foo: The Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man, Wong recounts the personal drama that he and his partner endured on their path to parenthood — involving a surrogate, an egg from his partners sister and identical twins born 13 weeks prematurely and needing months of intensive care. The lessons Wong has learned in order to survive and excel in a vocation fraught with rejection and racism have given him a keen perspective on diversity. Lauded for their resonant and inspirational messages, his presentations address many issues including racial self-image, Asian-American parental pressure and the model-minority myth.

Raúl Esparza, who won Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for his portrayal of leading man Robert, heads the cast of actor-musicians. John Doyle (Sweeney Todd) directs. In this video clip, Raúl Esparza and Company sings "Side by Side by Side." GREAT PERFORMANCES is produced for PBS by Thirteen/WNET New York. For more information, visit www.pbs.org
