Chicago-to-Boston flight: view of Lake Michigan, Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, Salem MA 2012-01-07
On a mostly clear enroute day in winter, a Chicago-to-Boston flight climbs above Chicago's northern suburbs before crossing Lake Michigan to fly east along Michigan's I-94 corridor. Cloud deck below clears just west of Detroit, affording view of the expanse of metropolitan Detroit, followed by Lake St. Clair separating the State of Michigan from the Province of Ontario. After glimpses at a few southwestern Ontario agricultural towns, the flight path hugs the Ontario shore of eastern Lake Erie, providing view of Great Lakes steamer-era ports and small current-era summer resort towns. Flight re-enters the US over Buffalo NY, and permits viewing of a couple of Upstate New York's Finger lakes before cloud deck returns until western Massachusetts. The opening reveals water power-dependent mill towns, along one New England river, established during America's early industrialization era. Salem MA comes into view as the flight approaches the Atlantic coast to circle around to land west at Boston Logan Airport. 1:30 Takeoff on ORD runway 32L 3:30 Chicago Executive Airport 3:50 Interstate-294 4:25 Interstate-94 5:00 Begin Lake Michigan at Evanston IL 13:00 Benton Harbor MI 15:40 Junction of Interstates 96, 296, 275 & state highway 5 at Farmington Hills MI; Detroit metropolitan area begins 16:10 Brighton MI 17:15 Interstate 75 through Troy MI 18:30 Interstate 94 through Clintondale MI along shore of Lake St. Clair 19:15 Lake St. Clair 19:35 Leaving US airspace; entering Canadian ...

CenterPoint Intermodal Center - North America's Largest Inland Port
CenterPoint Properties is pleased to present CenterPoint Intermodal Center, North America's largest inland port. Strategically located 40 miles outside of Chicago, CenterPoint Intermodal Center is at the crossroads of Interstates 55 and 80 in Joliet and Elwood, Illinois. The intermodal campus can be conveniently accessed from I-55 via the Arsenal Road interchange and I-80 via Route 53. The new Arsenal Road interchange scheduled for completion late 2012, will allow for more free flowing traffic into and out of the area. Situated on 6500 acres, the park offers flexible zoning and space solutions from manufacturing and distribution facilities to container, trailer and equipment management. Currently, there is over 10 million square feet occupied with an additional 25 million square feet of available capacity. CenterPoint Intermodal Center is anchored by the 770 acre BNSF Logistics Park -- Chicago and the recently opened 785 acre Union Pacific Joliet Intermodal Terminal, also referred to as Global IV. These intermodal terminals offer domestic and international service with most major US ports as well as the ability for direct rail service via each carrier. With pressures on trucking, rising fuel costs, and the deteriorating highway infrastructure, intermodal transportation is on the rise. CenterPoint Intermodal Center is on track to become North America's third largest maritime port, with 3 million TEUs projected in 2012. The park caters to intermodal users including third ...

Port Chicago National Park Dedication, July 17, 2010
Port Chicago National Park Dedication, July 17, 2010
The Largest Homeland Disaster During World War II On the evening of July 17, 1944, residents in the San Francisco east bay area were jolted awake by a massive explosion that blew out windows as far south as Danville windows and lit up the night sky in three counties. At the Port Chicago Naval Magazine, 320 men, mostly African-American, were instantly killed when the munitions ships they were loading with ammunition for the Pacific theatre troops blew up. Port Chicago National Memorial is about many things. It's about the tragedy of loss of life. It's about discrimination, segregation and the very beginnings of civil rights for all Americans. It's also about the coming together as a nation to learn from our past mistakes. Please take the extra time and energy and come visit Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, our newest National Park site.

The training exercise comes as the city found out some of the details of what the Secret Service wants for security at next month's summit at McCormick Place. An Afternoon on Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line at Whiting, Indiana, 01.08.12
Train 1: Okay, so this isn't in Indiana quite yet, but very close by- it's CP 509 at River Branch Junction. An old Pennsy branch that comes up from the Burnham area joins the main here, as well as a South Chicago & Indiana Harbor (the former Chicago Short Line) connection track. Across the big bridges over the Calumet River is the southernmost end of the Belt Railway of Chicago. ANYWAY, Norfolk Southern C40-9W #9755 pulls way out of Colehour Yard (several city blocks to the southeast) for headroom with a cut of doublestacks. Train 2: Now we are at the Hammond-Whiting Amtrak station in Whiting, Indiana, proper. Amtrak's train #352, the eastbound 'Wolverine' Michigan Service train, makes its first eastbound station stop. With a nice horn, P42DC #34 leads the train. P42 #28 is on the rear. It departs under the PRR CPL signals, heading for Detroit and Pontiac. Train 3: I had to run to catch this one! Adjacent to the NS main is CSX's former B&O passenger main out of Chicago. Now just a short stretch remains in this area, used a few times a day mainly by CSX and SC&IH trains hauling coke and other steel-related products. South Chicago & Indiana Harbor (Chicago Short Line) SW1500 #31 and SW1001 #28 run west over the jointed rail with a coil steel load, transfer caboose #5, and various types of coke cars. At about 06:24, note the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie car and the sad-but-true graffiti! Train 4: NS high-short-hood GP38-2 #5112 leads empty oilcans east on the Chicago Line past the ...

Passenger Action in Chicago, 03.06.12: CUS South End, 18th St, Clybourn/CY Twr
It was an extremely windy, Spring-like day today, as good a day as ever for catching some of the passenger-train action in and near downtown Chicago, between my classes in the South Loop. Train descriptions and locations follow: Location 1: Chicago Union Station South, and Amtrak Coach Yard Train 1: Amtrak train #350, the 'Wolverine', heads through the terminal throat of Chicago Union Station, between CP Roosevelt and CP Taylor. P42DCs #127 and 26 are the power. Location 2: 18th Street Metra Electric District station and Coach Yard/Shops Train 2: A four-car train of Highliners from the Blue Island Branch bypasses the 18th Street station on its way downtown. Train 3: Car #109 and 2 others comprise the South Shore Line's train #107, bound for Michigan City. Train 4: Meeting the South Shore train, an inbound South Chicago Branch train passes 18th Street. Train 5: Highliners move out of one of 18th Street Yard's rusty tracks, running as empty equipment toward Randolph Street / Millennium Station. Train 6: Car #22 leads a four-car train #214 from Gary, around the 18th Street yard and toward Randolph Street.
