Plus 8

Plus 8 (also spelled as Plus8, without the space) is a Canadian techno record label, based in Windsor, Ontario and founded in 1990 by DJs Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva. Initial releases were by the pair themselves and their friends, using aliases such as States of Mind and Cybersonik, along with other Detroit-based musicians such as Kenny Larkin. Along with Underground Resistance and Planet E, Plus 8 was one of the vanguards of Detroit Techno's 'Second Wave', capitalising on the vacuum left by labels such as KMS, Metroplex and Transmat at the start of the 1990s.

Plus 8's initial releases were a series of increasingly faster industrial hardcore recordings. This provides a clue as to the origin of the label's name; on most turntables, +8% is the maximum amount by which one can increase the speed of playback. The label began to retreat from hard and fast tempo after the release of Circuit Breaker's "Overkill/Frenz-E" and Cybersonik's "Thrash" in 1992. Hawtin and Aquaviva became disenchanted with the drug-fueled dynamic and rave culture that was driving hardcore techno. The label's total departure from hardcore came in 1992, when Hawtin and Aquaviva found themselves in a club in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The club DJ was playing one of Plus 8's records, a 150bpm version of Cybersonik's "Thrash", and the crowd began to chant along to the song. It soon became apparent that the chant was an anti-semitic football chant. The pair decided to change musical direction by slowing down the tempo and bringing funk and soul back into their music.

Kate Plus 8, formerly Jon & Kate Plus 8, is an American reality television series starring Kate Gosselin, which has aired since April 4, 2007.

History

After the success of two one-hour specials chronicling Kate Gosselin and her then-husband Jon, Surviving Sextuplets and Twins and One Year Later, the series aired on the Discovery Health Channel for the first two seasons before being moved to The Learning Channel (TLC). During its run, the series was one of the network's highest-rated programs, with the fifth season premiere seen by a record 9.8 million viewers, the most watched show of that evening including broadcast television, twice as many viewers as the show’s previous series high.

After the Gosselins' divorce in 2009, the final episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8 aired on November 23, 2009, announced by TLC three days earlier.

The series was later renamed Kate Plus 8 on June 6, 2010, focusing on Kate as a divorced mother raising the children, with Jon appearing less frequently. However, filming was later suspended due to Jon's lawyers delivering letters to TLC demanding that they cease and desist production and barred production crews from the couple's Pennsylvania property on October 1, 2009. This led to putting the show's revamping on hold. TLC planned for "a series of specials" if the series did not go into production.

Take Control

"Take Control" is a song by American singer-songwriter Amerie from her third studio album, Because I Love It (2007). It was released as the album's lead single on October 17, 2006. The song was written by Cee-Lo Green, Mike Caren, and Amerie, and produced by Caren, with additional production handled by Cee-Lo, Amerie, and Len Nicholson. "Take Control" contains excerpts from the 1970 song "Jimmy, Renda-se" by Brazilian musician Tom Zé, and elements of the 1980 song "You Make My Dreams" by Hall & Oates.

Recording

After Cee-Lo wrote the song, he approached Amerie to record it. Amerie said she did not normally do commissions and record other people's songs because they did not work for her, but because she had "always loved" Cee-Lo since his time with Goodie Mob, she agreed. She felt the song was not uptempo enough to suit her, so she wrote a hook, a bridge, and added a horn section to add to the song her "signature" and "a different flavour", making it a "dance record".

Tori Alamaze, the reference singer on the song, said that it was originally offered to her, but Amerie denied this, saying she thought it "really wack on [Alamaze's] part" to make such a claim.
