Please donate to Philippine Red Cross: www.redcross.org.ph More than 650 dead in Philippine floods, hundreds still missing by: AFP THE death toll from mammoth floods unleashed in the Philippines by tropical storm Washi has climbed to 652 with 808 others missing, the Red Cross said . The devastated port cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in Mindanao island accounted for most of the deaths, the agency said. It said 652 people were dead and 808 remained missing after the storm hit the south late Friday but more fatalities were likely to be confirmed in the coming days. ''The affected area is so wide and huge and I believe they have not really gone to all areas to do a search. Also, many of the houses were washed out so that means the houses and the bodies were displaced,'' said Gwen Pang, secretary general of the Philippine National Red Cross. ''We are only counting the actual dead bodies that were sent to funeral parlors,'' she said, warning many more bodies could still be found. Heavy rain from Washi on the southern island of Mindanao led to flash floods, swollen rivers and landslides, with the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan particularly hard hit. ''This thing happened so fast, it was very overwhelming. It happened in the evening when people were sleeping,'' said Pang. ''People were saying they were really unprepared. They didn't know it would hit them to this extent,'' she said. Fortunately, the waters receded quickly, in contrast to floods in the northern ...

Over 500 dead, hundreds missing as typhoon Sendong exits TROPICAL STORM Sendong (international name: Washi) exited the country yesterday with the death toll rising to more than 500, hundreds more missing and thousands of families affected, the government said yesterday. As of 6 pm, Undersecretary Benito T. Ramos, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director, tallied 516 casualties, majority of whom were from Iligan City (214) in Lanao del Norte, and Cagayan de Oro City (252) in Misamis Oriental, the two cities hit hardest by the storm. The rest of the casualties were from Sibulan, Valencia, Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental; Zamboanga del Norte; Compostela Valley; and Bukidnon. Mr. Ramos expects the numbers to rise as the country takes stock of the devastation mainly in Northern Mindanao. "'Yung missing 274 pa, pero baka hindi [iyan] accurate... [We have 274 persons missing, but that may not be accurate]," said Mr. Ramos by phone, noting that verification is ongoing. For its part, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has a higher casualty count as of 7 pm: 652 deaths and 808 others missing. The cost of damage has yet to be assessed as the incident occurred at about 2 am on Saturday. Sendong on Friday made landfall in Surigao del Sur and moved westward over Northern Mindanao towards Palawan, according to the weather bureau. The storm dumped over 181 millimeters (mm) of rainfall in 24 hours, equivalent to more than a month of rain, noted Mr ...

Sendong Relief Operations- Cagayan de Oro, Iligan City- Mindanao Philippines
www.sendongrelief.org Donate to the Philippine Red Cross- www.redcross.org.ph At least 436 people are dead after Tropical Storm Sendong pummeled the Philippines, Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang said Saturday. The vast majority of the bodies were found in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, according to military officials and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Five people were killed in a landslide, but all others died in flash flooding. The provinces of Compostela Valley and Zamboanga del Norte were also hit, added Benito Ramos, chairman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. About 400 people remain missing after the storm, which is called Sendong locally. More than 2000 have been rescued, the country's military reported. Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said officials are investigating reports that an entire village was swept away. Authorities have also begun distributing food rations for some 10000 families affected by the storm, while also handing out thousands of blankets and mosquito nets, the Red Cross reported Saturday. Flash flooding overnight -- following 10 hours of rain -- fueled the devastation, compounded by overflowing rivers and tributaries. As much as 20 centimeters (8 inches) of rain fell within 24 hours in some areas. Ramos said despite government warning, some did not evacuate. An estimated 100000 people are displaced, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development. At least ...

Flash floods triggered by a tropical storm in the southern Philippines have killed more than 440 people and left many more missing, officials say. Many of the victims were asleep when it struck Mindanao island, hitting the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. Tens of thousands of people have fled to higher ground, the authorities say. Benito Ramos, head of the national disaster rescue agency, said reports were still coming in and the casualty figures could rise. Mr Ramos said the floodwaters had risen alarmingly fast overnight as people slept. "Massive flooding had been reported over the region, especially in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City," he said Rivers burst their banks after 25mm of rain fell in 24 hours. The Philippine National Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang said at least 430 people had been killed. She said 215 people had been killed in Cagayan de Oro and 144 in Iligan. Large areas were left without power and some domestic flights were cancelled as winds of up to 90 km/h (55mph) swept across the island. HELP: VOLUNTEERING & AND DONATION IN CASH OR IN KIND VISIT THE SITE: www.hikot.com December 25, 2011 (5:15 PM) UPDATE: 1236 confirmed dead and half million displaced. The cities of Cagayan de Oro and nearby Iligan on Mindanao island were worst hit when Typhoon Wasi slammed ashore while people slept late on Friday and early Saturday, sending torrents of water and mud through villages and stripping mountainsides bare. "This is the first time this has happened in our city," Vicente Emano, mayor of Cagayan de Oro, said in a radio interview. He said officials in the area did not receive adequate warning before the typhoon struck. The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) estimated 497 were killed in eight provinces in the southern Mindanao region, with more than 100 still missing. "It's difficult to be certain on those missing," Gwendolyn Pang, secretary-general of the PNRC, told Reuters. "The floods washed out whole houses and families inside. It's possible entire families are dead and no one is reporting them missing." The latest report by the state disaster agency said 327 people had been killed and 274 were missing. Disaster and health officials were struggling to deal with the scores of bodies that have been recovered. Some have been stacked one on top of another in local mortuaries. Mindanao island, the southernmost in the Philippines, is a mineral-rich region that also produces rice and corn but is not normally on the path of an average 20 typhoons that hit the Southeast ...

TYPHOON SENDONG. Cagayan De Oro "Dust in the Wind"
My Facebook Account: Eduard Orgel Jr website: tatskynews.wordpress.com (Reuters) - More than 250 people were killed and almost twice that number were missing after a typhoon hit the southern Philippines, officials said Saturday, triggering flash floods and landslides and forcing tens of thousands from their homes. Typhoon Washi, with winds gusting up to 90km/h (56 mph), hit the resource-rich island of Mindanao late Friday, bringing heavy rain that also grounded some domestic flights and left wide areas without power. The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) said 256 people were killed in flash floods in Mindanao and another island. Soldiers and police were recovering more bodies washed ashore in nearby towns. "The death toll might still rise because there are still a lot of missing people," said Gwendolyn Pang, secretary-general of the PNRC. She said the hardest-hit areas were in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. Almost 400 people were unaccounted for, most of them from a coastal village in Iligan. Houses were swept into the sea by floodwaters while people were sleeping inside late Friday. The latest Red Cross figures put the death toll in Iligan at 144. Another 86 were killed in Cagayan de Oro, many of them children. Five miners were killed in a landslide in Monkayo on Mindanao and another 21 people drowned on the central island of Negros, the PNRC said. The national disaster agency put the death toll at 131, but other government officials also said at least 256 ...

Cagayan de Oro City Tragedy by Typhoon Sendong (December 18, 2011)
Hundreds killed as flash floods and nearly lots of people missing after tropical storm (Sendong) Washi devastated a wide swath of the southern Philippines. Flash flooding turned two coastal cities into a muddy wasteland filled with overturned cars and uprooted trees. The death toll will most likely rise because many villages remain unreached by disaster response personnel. The worst-hit cities were Cagayan de Oro, were hundreds of people died.
