TUZLA: a changing memorial culture for a new vision of Bosnia
TUZLA: a changing memorial culture for a new vision of Bosnia
CRIC researcher Dr. Ioannis Armakolas discusses post-conflict heritage reconstruction and memorialisation in the city of Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Tuzla had a unique history in the 1992-92 Bosnian war and its aftermath. It is a prime example of a political elite and a local community stuggling to prevent nationalism and division from taking root despite the ethnic turbulence and war dominating in the entire region. In the post-Bosnian war period, the local auhtorities reconstructed Tuzla's Slana Banja memorial complex by creatively combining socialist regime heritage with 1992-95 war memorials. The reconstructed Slana Banja became a prime example of how heritage management can be used for promoting a political vision for a less-ethnically divided Bosnia. This means we can't walk around and see what we'd see if we were there. Nobody has taken pics of your streets yet. So all i'm able to give you is aerial shots.. but i'm sure you'll still enjoy I think i found the lake.. it's kinda easy to spot but i didn't at first jeje. I think the song really fits well with the pics, it's a beautiful country and doesn't look like anywhere else i've seen, the houses look cool, great countryside.. and it looks really hot. The Postman of Tuzla - Bosnia
The Postman of Tuzla - Bosnia
April 1994 During the war in Bosnia, letters were a rare treasure, passed entirely on trust to strangers. Teacher Sadil Mehmedmovic provided Tuzla's only postal service. We follow Sadil on his round, visiting shell-shocked towns and villages. There wasn't a proper postal service for over two years, but the underground service was astonishingly reliable. For Nazlija Delic the postal service was a godsend as she awaited news of her sons: one was fighting on the front, another was wounded, and a third was a prisoner of war.
