Plot

The story begins with a happy lower middle class family - Arun Verma (Anil Kapoor) an 8 year-old boy, his sister Komal Verma (Khushboo) a 5 year-old girl, his mother (Nutan) and his father (Girish Karnad) - living a peaceful life. Arun Verma's father and mother teach their son and daughter via most famous title song "Zingadi Har Kadam Ek Nayi Jung Hai, Jeet Jayenge Hum, Jeet Jayenge Hum Tu Agar Sang Hai" which means that life is full of problems at every step and still we will overcome all these if all of us are together.

Arun's father is trapped in a murder case and a famous criminal lawyer G.D.Thakral (Amrish Puri) proves him guilty and he is sentenced to be hanged by the court. Numerous pleas by Arun's mother fail to convince Thakral to be truthful and spare her husband. Thakral asks her to give evidence for his innocence, to which she sadly quotes "Jiske paas koi sabut, koi gavanh nahi hote kya we begunah nahin hote" which means "one who does not have any proof or witness of innocence, are they not innocent?" Takral was adamant to let her husband be hanged. He was hanged as per court's decision. His mother becomes mentally unstable from shock and is sent to a mental institution.

Arun's house and all his property is auctioned off by the court. Arun and his sister are not offered help by anyone. He then grows up with the seeds of revenge in his heart. After the safe passage of time he becomes a successful defense lawyer and keenly follows every case of Thakral so that someday he can stand up in court against the unbeaten Thakral and beat him.

One day Geetha Mathur (Meenakshi) comes to him and asks him to fight the case of her sister, Dr. Asha Mathur (Bina) who is accused of killing a patient on duty with her medicine, which she gave from her purse. Arun refuses saying that if she can produce even an iota of evidence of her sister being innocent he will fight for her. To which Geetha replies coincidentaly the same sentence "Jiske paas koi sabut, koi gavanh nahi hote kya we begunah nahin hote" . Arun is instantly reminded of his mother’s pleadings before Thakral. Geetha storms out of his office but Arun now convinced to fight the case for her accused sister. He goes to meet Asha Mathur in police custody. He learns from her that, that fateful night she gets a call from her ward assistance that her patient is serious in ICU and needed her to be in hospital. She stops on the way due to a traffic jam and she impatiently moves out of car her to inquire for the reason. Meanwhile somebody replaces the medicine bottle with the look-alike bottle of poison from her purse at that moment. On arrival in the hospital, she gives the liquid from that bottle, not knowing it is poison, to stablize the patient's condition. This resulted in the death of the patient.

It is shown that Asha Mathur's husband Dr. Dinesh Mathur (Parikshat Sahni) had gone to meet Thakral and had asked him to fight his wife's case. Thakral says no claiming he is very busy at the moment but later tells his assistant that there is no way that this case could be won by any lawyer. Arun meets Dr. Dinesh Mathur and informs him that he will fight the case for his wife. He asked him about the nature of poison and for how long a person can sustain the poison, if taken, to which he learns that poison if taken might result in death within 2 - 15 minutes depending on the body resistance.

The case begins with the prosecution lawyer recounting the events of that fateful day and telling that the medicine given to the patient was actually poison. Arun defending the case says that the patient did not die of this medicine and to prove himself right he drinks the medicine in court and refutes the claim. The court then declares Geetha's sister not guilty. Just after the judgement Dr. Mathur rushes Arun to hospital. After the case it is revealed that the medicine indeed contained poison, and Arun is saved in the nick of time.

Geetha calls him on a beach to appreciate his efforts and kindness at the canteen and they both fall in love with each other. Thakral's son Vikram Thakral (Javed Jaffrey) a spoilt brat, not knowing anything about Arun, passes bad comments at the couple and teases Geetha, which irritates both Arun and Geetha and soon things take an ugly turn. He beats Vikram and his friends.

Dr. Mathur wanted to appreciate and compensate Arun for the riskiest effort he took to save his wife , calls him for the get -together in his mansion. Dr. Mathur gives Arun the blank cheque to fill the amount he likes. Arun rejects the offers politely and says he did for his self satisfaction. He then finds the same piano with the sticker of Bhagwat Geeta of Krishna which his father used to play and was auctioned. His memories are refreshed again and with the emotional request he tells Dr. Mathur that this piano is very significant in his life and can he have this. Dr. Mathur very happily gives the piano and asks him the reason for accepting this small fees. He tells Dr. Mathur, Mrs. Mathur and Geetha about his tragic story. He told that his mother is never to be seen after his father’s death and assumed that his mother is also dead.

Vikram plans to trap Arun's sister Komal and comes to know she studies in the same college. He tries to impress her by his charms and dancing skills and ways of flattering people. The plan works. Komal falls for him and he convinces her to run away with him (so that he can publicly defame Arun by leaving his sister). At the planned moment though there is a twist when one of Vikram's ex-girlfriends shows up and tells Komal of Vikram's evil intentions. In the ensuing argument Vikram murders his girlfriend which is witnessed by the Dr. Mathur's family .

Dr. & Mrs. Mathur and Geetha arrive at Arun's house to narrate the incident. There, Mrs. Mathur sees the photo of his mother hanging in the wall. She immediately recognizes the face with the patient she is handling for mental disorder case. Arun and his sister on hearing this, request them to take to her. In the mental hospital they see their mother. Her memories had been stopped to the date of the incident and still feels that their children are of 8 and 5 years old staying with father. Arun brings her mother to his house and tries to make his mother come back to normal to which she resumes her memory from hearing the song "Zingadi Har Kadam…..

Now Arun had been waiting for this moment to take revenge with Mr. Thakral. Arun steps in as the prosecutor against Thakral who is defending his son. The case moves to and fro, and in the end, Arun has the upper hand. Thakral kidnaps Arun's mother and attempts to blackmail him. Arun goes to save his mother and is beaten up by Thakral's goons. Even though severely injured Arun fights back. In an attempt to shoot Arun, Thakral shoots his friend's son and is jailed. He is unsuccessful in saving his son. His son is given a death sentence. Thakral has become a mentally unstable person.

Arun and his family are happy again and sing the famous "Zingadi Har Kadam Ek Nayi Jung Hai" song.

Anuradha Paudwal () is a popular playback singer in Bollywood in India. She has sung songs in Hindi and Marathi.

Biography

She studied at Xavier's College in Mumbai. She was married to the late Arun Paudwal, who worked with music director S. D. Burman as his assistant. Her singing career started in 1973 with the movie, Abhimaan, (starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan) in which she sang a ''Shloka'' (a Sanskrit verse). In the same year she also made her Marathi film debut with "Yashoda" (music by Datta Davjekar). In 1974, she brought out a record of Non-film Marathi songs or "''bhav geeten''" which became very popular.

In 1976, she got her break as a playback singer in Hindi films with Kalicharan(starring Shatrugan Sinha and Reena Roy). Her first solo was in the movie, Aap Beeti, (starring Hema Malini and Shashi Kapoor). Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the music-composer duo for that movie. She also occasionally sang songs for composers Rajesh Roshan (Des Pardes), Jaidev (Dooriyan, Laila Majnu), Kalyanji-Anandji (Kalaakar, Vidhataa), and Usha Khanna (Souten, Sajan Bina Suhagan).

Anuradha sang in a number of Marathi movies including the memorable "Disate Majalaa" (Ashtavinayak), "Raja Lalakaari", and "Kaalyaa Maatita Maatitaa". Most of these movies had music by the duo of Anil-Arun, Arun being her husband, who collaborated with Anil Mohile to form a pair.

Anuradha apparently never received any formal training in classical music, stating in an interview, "I have not received any formal training in classical music. I have tried many times, but it has never worked out. I learnt a little here and a little there, but ultimately, I just practiced for many hours listening to Lataji".

Anuradha gained recognition with her popular numbers for the movie, Hero, for composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Her collaboration with Laxmikant Pyarelal produced more success with songs for "Meri Jung"(O mere Kwabon ke), "Batwara" (Thaare Vaaste Re Dola-Tu Maaro Kaun Lage),"Nagina" and many more. "Ram Lakhan" saw Laxmikant Pyarelal giving three major hit songs to Anuradha. Their association ended with "Tezaab" where she sang two good numbers for them- "Kehdo ki tum" and "Hum tumko Dilbar Kyon mane".

Following this she collaborated with movie producer, Gulshan Kumar, and began a success streak with the movies, Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka, Tezaab, Aashiqui, and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin. She along with Gulshan Kumar were instrumental in getting many unknown playback singers to the fore, including Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam. New Music directors, including her husband Arun Paudwal, were introduced to the music world. Nadeem-Shravan, Anu Malik, Anand-Milind, Nikhil Vinay and Amar Utpal all collaborated with T-Series (Gulshan Kumar's music label) and started a new era of melody in Bollywood.She has sung maximum duets with Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu. Her other notable songs were also for the famous duo Shiv-Hari, Shivakumar Sharma and HariPrasad Chaurasia for the movie "Sahebaan". She has also sung for RD BUrman in her initial days and actually convinced him to make songs for Gulshan Kumar's label in his last days and the song "Aja Meri Jaan" set to one of the background score of R.D.Burman from "Saagar" is still popular. Anuradha also sang beautiful duets with her co-singers from the south, notably S.P.Balasubrahmanyam and K.J. Yesudas.

Anuradha has had her share of controversies as well. She was one of the rare singers to bloom during the reign of the Mangeshkar sisters in the Bollywood music industry. She was also under much controversy when she dubbed the songs of Alka Yagnik in the film "Dil". This also caused rifts between Anand-Milind and Alka Yagnik, thereby causing them to not collaborate for 2 years. Later in 1998, Anuradha Paudwal dubbed the songs of Alka Yagnik once again for the film Itihaas, this time under the music direction of Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen. However, Alka Yagnik, protested, to which the music company, T-Series was forced to include both versions of the same song, one in the voice of Alka Yagnik and the other in the voice of Anuradha Paudwal. She further went to dub Lata Mangeshkar's song in "Radha Ka Sangam" citing that her voice suited the heroine better. Anu Malik, a smaller name then, who had composed the soundtrack of ''Radha Ka Sangam'', protested against this move.

At her peak, Anuradha announced that henceforth she would sing exclusively for "T-Series", and concentrated on devotional songs and "cover-version" albums. T-Series used her attractive and pleasing looks to good effect in numerous Bhajan and promotional videos. She was the first playback singer whose face featured on music covers more than the film's actors. She sang for T-series for some time and then went into a sabbatical. After about five years, she restarted her playback career. She sang a few hit songs for her old music directors but the reception for her comeback was mild.

Although Anuradha has significantly cutback in singing for films, she has continued on with her popularity for singing devotional songs and creating devotional albums, which ultimately remains her forte. She has collaborated with Pandit Jasraj on his "Geet Govind , many devotional albums with Anup Jalota. Her voice is well suited on devotional numbers

Avtar Kishan Hangal (born 1917), popularly known as A. K. Hangal, is a well known Indian character actor in Hindi language films. His most notable roles are as the Inder Sen in Shaukeen, as Rahim Chacha in Sholay and as Ram Shastri in Aaina (1977). He has acted in around 200 Hindi films in career spanning from 1966 to 2005.

Early life

Avtar Kishan Hangal was born to Pandit Hari Kishan Hangal. He belongs to the Kashmiri Pandit community. His childhood was spent in Peshawar, where he had performed in theatre for some major roles. However, his primary occupation for the early part of his life was that of a tailor. He was an active participant in the Indian freedom struggle. Following his father's retirement, the family moved from Peshawar to Karachi. He moved to Bombay after the Partition of India in 1949 after 3 years in prison in Pakistan. He was involved with the theatre group IPTA along with Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi, both of whom had Marxist leanings.

Hindi Cinema Career

He started his Hindi film career at the very late age of 50 with Basu Bhattacharya's ''Teesri Kasam'' in 1966 and ''Shagird'', and went on to play as the man of principles playing the on-screen father or uncle of the leading men/women in the films in the 70's 80's 90's or sometimes the quintessential meek and oppressed old man. His pivotal roles in the films like ''Namak Haraam'', ''Shaukeen'' (1981), ''Sholay'', ''Aaina'' (1977), ''Avtaar'', ''Arjun'', ''Aandhi'', ''Tapasya'', ''Kora Kagaz'', ''Bawarchi'', ''Chhupa Rustam'', ''Chitchor'', ''Balika Badhu'', ''Naram Garam'' are considered to be among his best. He, as a character actor, always was part of the most of the films with Rajesh Khanna as the lead hero like ''Aap Ki Kasam'', ''Amar Deep'', ''Naukri'', ''Thodisi Bewafaii'', ''Phir Wohi Raat'', ''Kudrat'', ''Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar'' and ''Bewafai''. One of his best performances in his later years was in ''Shararat'' (2002) and his character roles in ''Tere Mere Sapne'' (1997) and ''Lagaan''. In movies he has played a very large number of character roles, mostly positive. He has acted in 225 films so far.

On 8 February 2011,actor A.K. Hangal 'walked' the ramp in a wheelchair for fashion designer Riyaz Ganji for his summer line in Mumbai.

Awards

The Government of India awarded him the prestigious Padma Bhushan for his contribution to Hindi Cinema in 2006.

Controversy

In 1993 he had applied for a visa to visit his birthplace in Pakistan, and the embassy invited him to Pakistan day celebration and he attended that. Next day Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray took offence "A.K. Hangal Deshdrohi hai"(in his newspaper Samna) and there was a talk of a boycott and having his scenes removed from films. His films were removed from the theaters in and around Maharashtra. His film posters were torn, effigies were burnt and threatening call was given. After a year meeting were called in his support and Bal Thackeray clarified a year later that he had not asked for a boycott and roles started coming back to Hangal.

Old age problem

Hangal, who has more than 200 films to his credit in a career that spanned nearly five decades, due to his old age post 2007 found it difficult to meet his medical expenses. His son Vijay, a retired cameraman and former Bollywood photographer, himself is 75 and has not had a full-time job since 2001.With just a gap of 20 years between Vijay and Hangal it was difficult for them to manage their day to day expenses. Earlier, Vijay would take up small jobs but now, he can't do that either because of a back problem. Post 2007 A.K.Hangal has been suffering from a disease and has run into financial troubles in garnering money for treatment (he and his son have to spend 15000 rupees a month on medicines). So income stopped coming into the house from all quarters. When this plight of the veteran 95-year-actor was highlighted by the media and newspapers on 20 January 2011, many filmstars and directors promised to help the 95-year-actor financially. Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan pledged to give him Rs 50,000.

Jaya Bachchan, who worked with Hangal in 7 films including ''Guddi'', ''Anamika'', ''Bawarchi'', ''Abhimaan'', ''Kora Kagaz'', ''Doosri Sita'', ''Jawani Diwani'', ''Parichay'' and ''Sholay'', on getting to know about his condition, said: "Please tell Hangal saab that his daughter was not aware of his condition and I am really sorry about it. My office will be taking care of all his hospital expenses.''

Mithun Chakraborty, founder and president of the Cine Artistes Welfare Trusta body had set up by the Cine and TV Artistes Association (CINTAA ) and he said he has already asked the association to release funds for the senior actor. On 21 January 2011, Dharmesh Tiwari, the president of CINTAA concurred and said the association has helped Hangal in the past and will continue to do so and that they sending a cheque of RS 50,000. On 21 January 2011 Salman Khan contacted Tiwari on Thursday to pledge his support. Director Samar Khan used then a popular social networking site to spread the word, and by 22 January 2011 evening friends and fans had pledged about Rs 1 lakh. Tiwari said, "If the government can allot some land, we can use it as Hangal saab has suggested to build an old age home for artistes. Mumbai, which is the birthplace of Bollywood, is not paying any heed to us."

Then Ranjan Thakur, the personal secretary to I&B; minister Ambika Soni said, "The minister has spoken to Ramesh Sippy and the Film Federation and has asked them to keep us updated on the funds collected for A K Hangal. We are looking at the possibility of a long-term health insurance program for retired actors.'' Now as per the reports of Times of India dated 24th Jan 2011, he has been offered some help from some from Bollywood fraternity for his medical expenses.On 4th of March, 2011, it was reported that Amitabh promised to take care of his medical expenses and Aamir Khan promised in one of the press conferences, that now, when he has known about it he would go see him and would help him in every way.

Family

He has a son, and after the death of his wife, he lives alone in his flat in Santa Cruz, Mumbai. His son Vijay Hangal is a retired Bollywood photographer and cameraman who lives in flat adjacent to Hangal.Vijay's wife died before 2000 and does not have any children.

Amrish Nihal Puri (), (); June 22, 1932 - January 12, 2005) was an iconic theater and film actor from India, who was a key player in the Indian theater movement that picked up steam in the 1960s. He worked with notable playwrights of the time, such as Satyadev Dubey and Girish Karnad. However, he is primarily remembered for essaying iconic negative roles in Hindi cinema as well as other Indian and international film industries. To South Asian audiences he is most remembered for his role as Mogambo in Shekhar Kapur's Hindi film ''Mr. India'' (1987), and to Western audiences he is best known as Mola Ram in Steven Spielberg's Hollywood film ''Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'' (1984).

Early life and background

Amrish Puri was born in Nawanshahr (former Tehsil of District Jalandhar), Punjab to Sri Nihal Puri and Ved Kaur as the third of five children. His siblings include elder brothers Chaman Puri and Madan Puri (both actors) and elder sister Chandrakanta and younger Harish Puri. He later moved to Shimla and graduated from B.M. College, Himachal Pradesh.

Amrish Puri came to Mumbai in the footsteps of his elder brothers Chaman Puri and Madan Puri (both actors), who was already an established actor known for playing negative roles. He failed his first screen test, and found a job with the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). At the same time, he started performing at the Prithvi Theatre, in plays written by Satyadev Dubey. He eventually became well-known as stage actor and won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1979. This theatre recognition soon led to work in television ads and eventually to films at the late age of 40.

He went on to work in Hindi, Kannada, Hollywood, Punjabi, Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil films. Though he was successful in all of these industries, he is best known for his work in Bollywood cinema. He has appeared in over four hundred films. His dominating screen presence and baritone voice made him stand out amongst the other villains of the day. He is best known for his role as Mogambo in the 1987 blockbuster, Mr. India and for his portrayal of Mola Ram, the antagonist in Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

National Cinema

;Hindi In 1971 he appeared in his first film, ''Prem Pujari'' although the first film he had signed for was ''Reshma Aur Sheraaa'' which was released in 1971. This was followed by many villain or supporting roles in numerous art films such as Shyam Benegal's ''Nishant'', ''Manthan'', and ''Bhumika'' and Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda. He also appeared in Govind Nihalani's film, Party in 1984.

Amrish Puri grew to became a staple of Hindi films in the 1980s playing mostly villainous roles, and attracting the most acclaim for his work in the 1987 hit film ''Mr. India'', directed by Shekhar Kapur. He played an egotistical international super-villain, Mogambo, who frequently refers to himself in the third-person, expressing satisfaction at the actions of his underlings with the phrase, ''Mogambo khush hua'' (Mogambo is pleased). Since then the Mogambo catchphrase has become one of the best recognized lines in Hindi Cinema.

He also went on to play many positive supporting roles, including his famous role as Baldev Singh, the conservative father who eventually lets his daughter marry her love instead of being forced into an arranged marriage, in the Bollywood blockbuster ''Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge'' (1995). Other positive roles include Group Captain Varghese, a Malayali officer in the Indian Air Force based film ''Vijeta'', an ailing idealistic father in Ghatak: Lethal. He was a kind-hearted American businessman in ''Pardes'' (1997) and a genial grandfather in the films ''Chori Chori Chupke Chupke'' and ''Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai''. He is also known to play a strict old man in comedy films like ''Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate'', where he played a retired cop and ''Muskurahat'' where he played a retired judge.

His last films included ''Kisna: The Warrior Poet'' and ''Kachchi Sadak'', which were released some time after his death.

;Kannada He acted in some Kannada films during the early days of his career. He played the protagonist role in a black & white off beat Kannada film Kaadu directed by Girish Karnad.He also acted in some other mainstream films.

;Malayalam He starred as the sadistic jailor in ''Kalapani'' in which co-acted Padmashri Mohanlal.

;Punjabi He is best known in Punjabi cinema for his role as the landlord villain Joginder Singh in the legendary film ''Chan Pardesi'' (1980). He also starred as the villain Zalam Singh in the religious Punjabi film ''Sat Sri Akal'' (1977). After twenty years, he returned to Punjabi cinema to make a brief appearance as the Sufi Saint in the acclaimed film ''Shaheed Uddham Singh'' (2000).

;Telugu He also appeared in Telugu films such as ''Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari'', ''Major Chandrakanth'', ''Aditya 369'', ''Kondaveeti Donga'', ''Aswamedham'', ''Aakhari Poratam'' etc.

;Tamil He appeared in the Tamil film ''Dalapathi'' (1991), directed by Mani Ratnam, opposite Rajnikanth and Mammootty, Tamil and Malayalam superstars respectively. After Dalapathi, Amrish Puri made his second and last appearance in the Rajinkanth's film "Baba" (2002) in which he played the role of an evil tantrik who helps politicians and other evil elements to succeed in their hideous schemes.

International

He is known to international audiences for his roles as Khan in Richard Attenborough's ''Gandhi'' (1982) and as the main antagonist Mola Ram in the Steven Spielberg's ''Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'' (1984). He shaved his head for the role, and it created such an impression that he kept his head shaved and became one of the most popular villains in Hindi Cinema. Amrish and Spielberg shared a great rapport and Spielberg often said in interviews that, "Amrish is my favorite villain- The best the world has ever produced and ever will!"

Death

He died on 12 January 2005, due to brain haemorrhage, in Mumbai, Maharashtra at the age of 72.

Anil Kapoor (, , born 24 December 1959) is an Indian actor and producer who mainly appears in Bollywood films. He won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his role in Yash Chopra's film ''Mashaal'' (1984).

Kapoor earned his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in N. Chandra's ''Tezaab'' in 1988, and later for Indra Kumar's ''Beta'' in 1992. Since then, he has starred in many critically and commercially successful films including ''Woh Saat Din'', ''Meri Jung'', ''Janbaaz'', ''Karma'', ''Mr. India'', ''Virasat'' (1997), for which he won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor; ''Biwi No.1'' (1999); ''Taal'' (1999), for which he won his second Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award; ''Pukar'' (2000), for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor; ''No Entry'' (2005) and ''Welcome'' (2007).

Kapoor's first role in an international film was in Danny Boyle's 2008 Academy Award-winning film ''Slumdog Millionaire,'' for which he shared the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. His performance in the eighth season of the action series ''24'' generated rave reviews from the American press. Globally, Anil Kapoor is one of the most recognised Indian actors.

Personal life and education

Anil Kapoor was born in Tilak Nagar, Mumbai, to film producer Surinder Kapoor and his wife Nirmal. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School - Chembur, in the Chembur suburb of Mumbai and then St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. Kapoor's elder brother, Boney Kapoor, is a film producer while younger brother Sanjay Kapoor is also an actor.

In 1984, he married Sunita Kapoor (née Bhambhani) and has two daughters and a son Harshwardhan Kapoor. Kapoor's elder daughter is actress Sonam Kapoor. Rhea Kapoor attended school in New York and is now a producer in Mumbai.

Career

As an actor

1980s

Kapoor made his Bollywood debut with Umesh Mehra's ''Hamare Tumhare'' (1979) in a supporting role. After a few minor roles in films such as ''Hum Paanch'' (1980) and ''Shakti'' (1982), he got his first leading role in the 1983 Hindi film, ''Woh Saat Din''. Kapoor later tried acting in Tollywood and Sandalwood, and appeared in the Telugu film ''Vamsa Vriksham'' and Mani Ratnam's Kannada debut film ''Pallavi Anu Pallavi'' released in 1983.

Next, he appeared in Yash Chopra's drama ''Mashaal'' (1984) as Tapori, for which he won his first Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category. Kapoor's 1985 releases included ''Yudh'' & ''Saaheb''.

In 1986, Kapoor played the role of a care free playboy in the hit ''Janbaaz'', costarring Feroz Khan. His other release of 1986 ''Insaaf Ki Awaaz'' was a box office hit. In the same year Basu Chatterjee directed ''Chameli Ki Shaadi'' and he displayed his crackling flare in comedy.

Going on to deliver huge commercial success with films like ''Meri Jung'' (1985), a career-defining role of an angry young lawyer fighting for justice, which eventually established Kapoor's credential as a mature actor and both audience and critics gave their thumbs up to his performance. Kapoor played a comic tapori in ''Karma'' (1986), the biggest hit of the year. Kapoor generated wide applause from audience of all walks of life for his title role in Shekhar Kapur's sci-fi film ''Mr. India'' (1987), the biggest hit of the year. The film became one of his biggest box office hits and shot him to superstar status. Anil kapoor was equally impressive in Mahesh Bhatt directed film ''Thikana''. In 1988, he was rewarded with his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his rivetting performance in the hit film, ''Tezaab'', the biggest blockbuster of 1988. Anil proved to be the only saving grace even in flops like ''Ram-Avtar''. The following year he delivered more mega commercial and critical successes with ''Ram Lakhan'' (which became the second highest box office earner of 1989) and the audience went berserk with the song ''One Two Ka Four''. In the highly acclaimed film ''Parinda'', Kapoor played his role with conviction, and his biggest achievement was displaying the vulnerability of his character so perfectly. In ''Rakhwala'', Kapoor played a tapori again and the film was declared a success. Kapoor excelled in his eccentric portrayal of an autistic person in the 1989 hit, ''Eeshwar'' and this film proved his versatility as an actor.

1990s

The year 1990 saw him play a dual role, as twin brothers in the highly successful ''Kishen Kanhaiya'' and in the same year he further attained reasonable box office success with ''Ghar Ho To Aisa''. Kapoor came up with a critically acclaimed performance in ''Awaargi''. Many critics called that his best performance ever. This was followed by a restrained yet striking performance as a middle age man in Yash Chopra's romantic drama ''Lamhe'', a landmark film of Indian cinema and Yash Chopra's best work to date. It was the first film in which he appeared without a moustache. Although the film was a box office failure in India, it proved to be a success overseas. Kapoor's 1991 release, ''Benaam Badshaah'' was accorded above average status at the ticket window.

In 1992, Kapoor received his second Filmfare Best Actor Award for his hard-hitting performance in Indra Kumar's ''Beta'' — the biggest blockbuster of the year — opposite Madhuri Dixit. Kapoor was highly impressive with his comic act in ''Khel'' and his comic timing was one of the highlights of the film. In 1993, Boney Kapoor's much delayed mega-budget, ''Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja'' was a disaster at the box office and damaged Kapoor's reputation as the industry's biggest star at the time. The only major success in these years was ''Laadla'' with Sridevi, a film produced by Nitin Manmohan. Kapoor gave a splendid performance as a simpleton lover in the hit musical ''1942: A Love Story''. His 1995 release, ''Trimurti (film)'' was a box office disaster, though Kapoor's performance was creditable. Kapoor came up with a decent performance in the average performer ''Gharwali Bharwali''.

After a few box office failures, he had box office success with films like ''Loafer'' (1996),. In ''Judaai'', Kapoor's depiction of a loving husband twisted between his two wives was appreciated and this film fared well at the box office. ''Deewana Mastana'' (1997), ''Biwi No.1'' (1999) and ''Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain'' (1999) were box office hits. Kapoor’s unusual characterization of a zealous, crooked musical superstar in ''Taal'' (1999) shocked both audience and critics alike. He also won rave reviews for his superb performance in ''Virasat'', a remake of the Tamil film, ''Thevar Magan'' (1992), in which ''Kamal Hassan'' had played Kapoor's role. He also starred in the unsuccessful ''Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate'', which was legendary filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherji's last commercial release, along with Juhi Chawla. He shaved his moustache once again for the film, in the second half, where he played actor Sajid Khan's wife and his delightful comic timing was a real treat to watch.

2000s

Kapoor's first release of 2000 was ''Bulandi (2000 film)'', in which he played a double role, showing restraint and maturity as the elder Thakur. He won his first National Film Award in the Best Actor category for his role in Rajkumar Santoshi's critically acclaimed ''Pukar'' in 2000. Kapoor again tasted critical and commercial success with ''Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai'' in 2000. Kapoor stole the show as Rajeev in the much delayed, ''Karobaar'', a film directed by Rakesh Roshan, where Kapoor’s dialogue delivery was appreciated. He delivered a powerhouse performance in Shanker's ''Nayak'' which is considered to be his best performance by many.

In 2002, Kapoor gave an excellent performance in the role of a fat man in ''Badhaai Ho Badhaai'', a takeoff from the Hollywood hit, ''Nutty Professor''. He notched up yet another glorious performance in the Indra Kumar directed film ''Rishtey''. In ''Om Jai Jagadish'', he gave an amazing performance. Kapoor shared the screen with Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan for the first time in ''Armaan'', and underplayed his character of a neurosurgeon superbly.

In his 2003 release, ''Calcutta Mail'', he delivered one of his best performances. His character was defined with ample scope to perform in this screenplay-driven performance and in spite of the strong supporting cast, this really came out as Kapoor's one-man show. He ignited the silver screen with an authoritative performance in ''Musafir''. Kapoor gave an incredibly restrained performance as the stricken husband in the thriller ''My Wife's Murder'', which he also produced. Anees Bazmee's super-hit comedy ''No Entry'' (2005), followed for Kapoor that year. The film went on to become the highest grossing film of the year.

Kapoor played a grey character with finesse in the 2005 thriller, ''Chocolate''. Anil's first release of 2007 ''Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love'' was a box office hit in overseas though a flop in India. Anees Bazmee's ''Welcome'', which released on 21 December 2007 and was declared the biggest success of the year. Kapoor's understated performance in Subhash Ghai's ''Black and White'' was highly lauded. His first release in 2008, Abbas Mustan's thriller, ''Race'' became a box office hit. Vijay Krishna Acharya's, ''Tashan'' marked Anil's comeback to Yash Raj Films but failed to do well at the box office.

His most recent films were his first English-language film, ''Slumdog Millionaire'', which was released on 12 November 2008, and ''Yuvvraaj'', which was released on 21 November 2008. ''Yuvvraaj'', with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles, failed to do well at the box office. On the other hand, ''Slumdog Millionaire'' has won a number of international awards and received rave reviews from critics, costing only US $15 million to produce, but pulling in more than $352 million worldwide. In January 2009, he attended the 66th Golden Globe Awards ceremony along with the team of ''Slumdog Millionaire'', which won four Golden Globe Awards. Kapoor also received a nomination for Best Ensemble at the Black Reel Awards of 2008 and has won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

2010s

In 2010, Kapoor starred in the eighth season of the American television series ''24'', portraying Omar Hassan, President of the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan. In October of that year he was cast to play a villain in both Mission: Impossible IV and ''Power''.

As producer

In 2002, Kapoor produced his first film, the comedy ''Badhaai Ho Badhaai'', in which he also starred in. It was followed by My Wife's Murder (2005), and ''Gandhi, My Father (2007)''. ''Gandhi, My Father'' focuses on the relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal Gandhi (2007) and was awarded the National Film Award - Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film). He produced the movie ''Shortkut: The con is on'' starring Akshaye Khanna and Arshad Warsi. In 2010, he produced the movie ''Aisha'', starring his daughter Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol in the lead roles. The film performed moderately at the box office, grossing Rs. 15.50 crore in its theatrical run.
