The Lok Sabha on Tuesday suspended eight Congress MPs for disrupting the House over the Telangana statehood issue. All the eight MPs belonged to the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. The decision to suspend the MPs was taken at a Congress core group meeting chaired by party President Sonia Gandhi after the Lok Sabha was adjourned as the MPs raised slogans and waved placards in the House, demanding the creation of Telangana state by dividing Andhra Pradesh. ibnlive.com

According to sources the turn out in all the four assembly constituencies in the district witnessed 64 per cent polling. Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency saw 68.14 per cent polling. In Sringeri the turn out was estimated to be 73 per cent while Chikmagalur had 50 per cent, Mudigere 64 per cent and Tarikere had 56 per cent polling. Last elections, the total polling was registered at 62.5 per cent with Sringeri registering 64 per cent, Mudigere at 54 per cent, Chikmagalur at 61 per cent and Tarikere at 52 per cent. Intense security had been provided at all the naxal affected areas and at the hyper-sensitive booths. Due to this the voters walked up to the booths fearlessly. Chikmagalur, Mudigere, Tarikere and Sringeri constituencies saw just 30 per cent turn out till afternoon. It is said that both, summer heat and India-Pakistan cricket tournament had made voters stay indoor in a big way. At places like Hakkandur and Joladal, only three to four people were seen waiting in the queue. In Aldoor only 291 voters came to cast votes out of 1219 voters.
