Wang, Autobiographical Self
Wang, Autobiographical Self
In a book talk presented at Cornell University's Mann Library in September 2013, professor of human development Dr. Qi Wang examines the developmental, social, cultural, and historical origins of the autobiographical self—the self that is made of memories of our past. By analyzing everyday family storytelling, autobiographical writings in Western and Chinese literature, memory data from controlled experiments in the laboratory, and personal narratives on blogs and Facebook, Wang illustrates that our memories and sense of ourselves are conditioned by time and culture. She examines some of the most controversial issues in current psychological research of memory and analyzes the influences of the larger social, political, and economic forces on the autobiographical self. TRANSCRIPT (ESL) Superior Autobiographical Memory #5 1) Dr. McGaw is doing MRI scans of all the subjects' brains. 2) He hopes to find some clues that might be hidden in the structure of their brains. 3) Preliminary results from the MRI have come in, and the findings are tantalizing and unexpected. 4) There is a lot at stake here. 5) This is an important discovery of people who have instant access to every day of their lives. 6) This could recast our whole understanding of how the human memory works and what's possible. 7) This has implications for all of us. 8) Maybe we all have memories of every day tucked away in our brains, but we just can't retrieve them. 9) Maybe understanding these remarkable people could someday help with Alzheimer's and other memory disorders. 10) Scientists tell us the potential is enormous. 11) But the inquiry is just beginning. 12) The first step is to try to figure out what is going on in their brains. 13) These people don't appear to have cluttered brains. 14) They can pull out the right information at the right time and that's the puzzle. 15) Scientists have to do some rethinking. 16) They are doing DNA testing to see if there are differences in the genetic makeup of the subjects. 17) All three men are lefties, so they are checking handedness to see if that yields any clues. 18) They are eager to find where all this will lead and how many more subjects are out there. 19) Louise likes having this gift. She said it makes her live her life with so much more intention.- published: 12 May 2012
