2SM is an Australian radio station, licensed to and serving Sydney, New South Wales, broadcasting on 1269 kilohertz on the AM band. It is owned and operated by Broadcast Operations Group. The SM call sign was taken from Sydney's St Mark's Church (not as many believe^[who?] from St Mary's Cathedral).

2SM's programs are heard across the 2SM Super Radio Network in regional New South Wales and Queensland, consisting of 32 AM and FM stations.

The station was opened by Archbishop Kelly on 24 December 1931, and was owned by the Roman Catholic Church.^[2] Religious programming was, for most part, not its focus and it was a leading force in the Sydney radio scene. In the 70s it dominated popular music radio in Sydney and was at or near the top of the ratings.

The introduction of new AM station, 2WS in 1978, and FM stations 2DAY and 2MMM at the start of the 1980s saw 2SM's glory days end. In the early 1980s the station retained reasonable ratings with contemporary music formats and slogans such as "More Music", "Rock of the 80s" and "The Power". In 1988 the station dropped its Top 40 format as well as the 2SM brand when it become "Lite & Easy 1269". Its final rating as a Top 40 station had been 6.9%. The years since have seen its format undergo numerous changes, including easy listening and country formats (KICK AM). The ratings never again surpassed 4%

In the 90s, the station regained its original callsign (2SM) and recorded some of the lowest ratings ever by a Sydney commercial radio station. In February 1992 a commercial syndicate headed by John Brown attempted to purchase the station.^[3][4] In July the station was finally sold to Wesgo, who sacked the entire on air staff and put the station into automation.^[5] Wesgo relaunched the station with a country music format in October.^[6] With the station still last place in the ratings, it went back to easy listening in May 1994, adopting the new name Gold 1269.^[7] In late 1994 Wesgo was purchased by Australian Provincial Newspapers, who later purchased the Australian Radio Network in March 1995, requiring some stations to be sold due to media ownership rules.^[8] The station was sold to Kick Media, headed by former INXS manager, Chris Murphy.^[9] It was rebranded Kick AM in mid-October with a format comprising country, rock and blues.^[10] RG Capital Radio Network bought a 40% stake in February 1996.^[11] By the end of 1996 the station still had low ratings, causing the owners to relaunch it on Christmas Eve 1996 as The New 2SM, with a format of hits from the 60s to 80s.^[12]

In 2002 the night time show, hosted by Graeme Gilbert, scored a rating of just 0.1%, the lowest rating ever recorded for a commercial program in a metro market in Australia. 2SM subsequently withdrew from the Sydney radio ratings.

Club Veg (formerly called "The Morning After Show" on Triple J) was a popular Australian radio show and comedic partnership consisting of Mal Lees and Vic Davies (1954 - 2009) on Triple M.

Career[link]

The partnership started when Mal (then the Afternoon Announcer/Music Director) & Vic (Copywriter) met at 2KA in Penrith. Both were big fans of the Beatles, Monty Python and thinking outside the box - and being told off for it.

They later worked at 2WS writing and producing comedy for Mad Mel but realised by the third day in, that they had a great comedy partnership and they could write better for themselves than for anyone else. Armed with some of those tapes from WS, Mal called Marius Webb at Triple J and introduced him to (what was at the time) a new form of radio comedy. It resulted in them being hired on the spot.

Whilst at Triple J, the boys hosted a theme night at the Tivoli in George Street, Sydney and because their listeners had a habit of referring to them as 'The Vegies' (due to their veg'd-out presenting style) it seemed only appropriate that they call the night at the Tivoli "Club Veg". When their Saturday breakfast show was moved to Drive, "The Morning After Show" name no longer fit and since their listeners were still referring to them as 'Vegies' it seemed an obvious choice to change the name to Club Veg.

After 18 months, 2SM offered Club Veg the Drive shift and soon after Breakfast, before Triple M Sydney poached them for the Night time show in 1987.

With Club Veg, Triple M then introduced the first FM nightly countdown called the Rock Poll. Together with their FM talkback and comedy format it was a winning combination. It was this period when Club Veg recorded the highest 7pm-10pm results in Australian radio history and on their second stint at Triple M Sydney (1998–1999), Club Veg was the first show to break John Laws’ long reign over the 9am-12Noon slot, beating him twice.

Club Veg is fondly remembered for its numerous song parodies; surprise LIVE SFX; 'Sucked In" calls; responses of being "Not too foul..." when listener's would call in and ask how they were, and (following a successful Drive campaign for an Indian sauce brand) "Pataks" and of course, Mal's nightly sunsets over Sydney.

The show was awarded a 1987 New York Radio Comedy Award and the Australian RAWARD (Radio Award, now known as an ACRA) in 1990 for Best On-Air Team.

The partnership ended in 2002 after their contract was not renewed by Triple M Sydney.^[1][2]
