Lori McKenna (née Giroux) (born December 22, 1968) is an American folk singer/songwriter. She lives in Stoughton, Massachusetts with her husband and five children.

Songwriting and music career[link]

McKenna parlayed her contribution to Hill's ''Fireflies'' into both an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show along with Hill, and a record deal with Warner Brothers Nashville. WB soon re-released McKenna's ''Bittertown'' on its label. In 2007, McKenna toured with Hill and Tim McGraw on the Soul2Soul Tour, accompanied by singer-songwriter/instrumentalist Mark Erelli and guitarist Russell Chudnofsky.

In addition to her own albums, McKenna has contributed a cover of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" to the 2005 "High School Reunion" compilation. In 2007, McKenna recorded a cover of Neil Young's "The Needle and the Damage Done" for the American Laundromat Records benefit CD ''Cinnamon Girl - Women Artists Cover Neil Young For Charity''. Also, McKenna helped write "Most of Me", "Latest Mistake" and "Can't You Just Adore Her?" on Mandy Moore's album Wild Hope (2007), and "Everblue" on Amanda Leigh (2009). Also of note, Lori McKenna's song "Bible Song" from ''Bittertown'' was recorded by country artist Sara Evans on her 'Real Fine Place' album released in 2005. Lori also contributed a song titled "I'm Workin'", recorded by Tim McGraw on his ''Let It Go'' album, released in 2007, as well as a song entitled "True Believer", recorded by Jimmy Wayne on his 2008 album, ''Do You Believe Me Now''.

''Unglamorous'', was released on August 14, 2007, from Warner Bros. Nashville and McGraw and noted Nashville producer Byron Gallimore’s label, Stylesonic Records. The album has released two non-charting singles. McKenna parted ways with Warner Bros. in 2008.

UMPG Nashville signed McKenna to an exclusive publishing agreement. Her latest album is called ''Lorraine'' and was released on January 25, 2011 under Signature Sounds.

Using the stage name "Don Was", he formed the group Was (Not Was) with school friend David Weiss (David Was). The group found commercial success in the 1980s - releasing four albums and logging several hit records. A jazz/R&B; album of Hank Williams covers, "Forever's A Long, Long Time" was released in 1996, under the name Orquestra Was. In 2008, Was (Not Was) reunited for an acclaimed new album and tour.

Don Was has earned his recognition as a record producer and has recorded with an array of artists from The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Ziggy Marley, Bob Seger, Al Green, Lucinda Williams, Garth Brooks, Ringo Starr, Iggy Pop, Lyle Lovett, Kris Kristofferson, Joe Cocker, Hootie and The Blowfish, Amos Lee and Willie Nelson to Elton John, Stevie Nicks, George Clinton, Randy Newman, The Black Crowes, Carly Simon, Travis Tritt, Brian Wilson, Jackson Browne, The Barenaked Ladies, Old Crow Medicine Show, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Richie Sambora, The Presidents of the United States of America, B.B. King, Paul Westerberg, Kurt Elling, Poison, Cheb Khaled, The B-52's, Zucchero, Todd Snider, Elizabeth Cook, Jill Sobule and Solomon Burke. He has received multiple Grammy Awards including Producer of the Year in 1995. He produced several albums for Bonnie Raitt including her ''Nick of Time'' album that won the 1990 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

He served as music director and/or consultant for several motion pictures such as ''Thelma and Louise'', ''The Rainmaker'', ''Hope Floats'', ''Phenomenon'', ''Tin Cup'', ''Honeymoon in Vegas'', ''8 Seconds'', ''Switch'', ''The Freshman'', ''Days of Thunder'', ''Michael'', ''Prêt-à-Porter'', ''Boys on the Side'', ''Toy Story'' and ''The Paper''.

In 1995, Don Was earned a Grammy Award for Producer of the Year. In 1997, he directed and produced a documentary, ''I Just Wasn't Made for These Times'', about former-Beach Boy Brian Wilson. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and won the San Francisco Film Festival's Golden Gate Award. He also received the British Academy Award (BAFTA) for Best Original Score in recognition of his compositions for the film ''Backbeat''.

Was, who is a fan of the Rolling Stones and saw them in concert when he was age 12 in 1964, produced their albums ''Voodoo Lounge, Stripped, Bridges to Babylon, Forty Licks, Live Licks and A Bigger Bang.'' He also worked on the Rolling Stones's reissues ''Exile on Main Street'', released in May 2010 and "Some Girls" released in October 2011. Was scoured old master recordings of the albums for lost gems, remixing some songs while producing entirely new vocals and tracks on others.

In 2009, he began hosting a weekly radio show on Sirius XM satellite radio's Outlaw Country channel called ''The Motor City Hayride''. During the 2011 season of American Idol, Was appeared in several episodes producing contestants Haley Reinhart, Scotty McCreery, Paul McDonald, Lauren Alaina and Casey Abrams.

In January, 2012, he was appointed President of the legendary jazz record label, Blue Note Records.

Until the early 1990s, the word was considered one of a number of words that could not be uttered on commercial television in the United States. Comedian Andrew Dice Clay caused a major shock when he uttered the word during a televised MTV awards show in 1989. However, there were PG-13 and R rated films in the 1980s that featured use of the word, such as the R-rated ''The Terminator'' (1984), the PG-13-rated ''National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation'' (1989), and the PG-rated ''Back to the Future'' (1985). By 1994, however, vulgarity had become more acceptable, and the word was featured in dialog on the long-running television series ''NYPD Blue'', though it has yet to become anything close to commonplace on network TV. In some broadcast edits (such as the syndication airings of ''South Park''), the word is partially bleeped out — ironically, as "assh—", with the profane half of the word intact.

Semantics[link]

This word or its literal translation is found in colloquial speech in a number of cultures (in both English and other languages). This is because it describes an organ of elimination that is considered a taboo region (since it belongs to the intimate parts) of the body in many societies.

The English word ''ass'' (meaning donkey, a cognate of its zoological name ''Equus asinus'') may also be used as a term of contempt, referring to a silly or stupid person. In the United States, and, to a lesser degree, in Canada, the words ''arse'' and ''ass'' have become synonymous; however, in the rest of the English-speaking world, ''ass'' still only refers to the donkey, rather than the ''arse'' (buttocks). It is worth noting that speakers of some varieties of English "drop their Rs" before consonants, leading to a pronunciation of ''arse'' that is quite similar to ''ass''.

In February 2004, American media reported that during a rally of supporters, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called Bush "an asshole" for believing his aides in supporting a coup against Chavez in 2002. The word in the original Spanish was "pendejo", and in news coverage the word was widely, though incorrectly, translated as "asshole"; the meaning of the word varies substantially in Latin America, and in Venezuela its meaning is closer to "fool". The following year, in September, ''Nightline'' host Ted Koppel said to Chavez on national television, "I'm going to perhaps shock you a little, but these are your words. You called President Bush an asshole," to which Chavez replied, "I've said various things about him. I don't know if I actually used that word."

The Luxury is a Boston-based Britrock band, formed in the summer of 2005.

In 2007, they released their debut album ''This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things''. The record entered the College Music Journal top 200 at #152. Dunn has been nominated for "Best Vocalist" 4 times, by the ''Boston Phoenix'', ''WBZ-TV'' and ''the Noise''. The Luxury have two audio engineers (Dunn and Foster) in the group.

In May 2008, the band ran into difficulties involving Amazon.com and the Toccoa-based rock band Luxury. It appeared that Amazon had accidentally merged the two bands into one on their website, resulting in confusion over payments for downloads. This unfortunate incident could have been avoided had the band chosen a name that had not already been used by another band for the previous fifteen years.

In July 2008, the British rock group Coldplay chose The Luxury from the final three of a pool of over 400 Boston-area bands to open their August 4, 2008 concert at Boston's TD Banknorth Garden. The selection process was sponsored by Boston alternative rock station WFNX and involved online fan voting before Coldplay made their final selection.

On April 24, 2009, the band beat 23 other Boston bands to win the 31st annual WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble at The Middle East nightclub in Cambridge, MA.

On July 11, 2009, The Luxury released their second album ''In The Wake of What Won't Change'' with a release party at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA. The Click Five, Midatlantic and Aloud were the supporting acts for the evening.

Rose began writing songs for Taylor Swift on Swift's 2006 self-titled debut album, on which Rose has seven co-writer's credits. Among those cuts were the album's first two singles, "Tim McGraw" and "Teardrops on My Guitar," which helped Rose win a Songwriter of the Year award from SESAC in 2007.

Rose continued to collaborate with Swift on her second album, 2008's ''Fearless'', collaborating on the singles "White Horse" and "You Belong with Me" as well as the title track. "White Horse" won both of them the Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2010, and "You Belong with Me" was nominated for Song of the Year.

Rose also co-wrote the song "Lucky Guy", the first single from new Nashville-based country band Mockingbird Sun.

Her daughter is country artist Caitlin Rose.
