Ruperto Chapí - Symphony in D Minor (1879)
Ruperto Chapí - Symphony in D Minor (1879)
Symphony in D Minor by Ruperto Chapí. Conducted by Guerassim Voronkov with the Orquestra de l'Academia del Gran Teatre del Liceu. I. Adagio - 00:00 II. Andante Con Moto - Molto Espressivo - 11:04 III. Presto - 25:43 IV. Molto Allegro E Vivace - 34:23 The Symphony in D minor is a classic example of orchestral writing, Chapí putting into practice all he had learned in Rome by analysing the symphonies of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn. In Spain there was little in the way of a symphonic tradition: between the first four symphonies of Mallorcan composer Miguel Marqúes and the first of Tomás Bretón, Spanish orchestral composition was split between the academic and the picturesque, the Fantasía morisca falling into the latter camp. Chapí conceived his symphony for an orchestra comprising double woodwind, four horns, two trumpets, two cornets, three trombones, a figle (a military band brass instrument soon to be replaced by the tuba), timpani and full strings. It is a lengthy work with a classical four-movement structure. As pointed out by Ramón Sobrino, author of the critical edition, the first movement, Adagio--Allegro appassionato, is written in sonata form. It is notable for its "systematic use of the diminished seventh" (Iberni), a characteristic element of Chapí's music, also used with moderation in the Fantasía morisca. At the time particular attention was paid to the opening, with its "pathetic melody, which resolves itself into orchestral combinations inspired ...

Gardner 2 barrel Machine Gun (1879)
Gardner 2 barrel Machine Gun (1879)
An animation of the 2 barrel Gardner machine gun manufactured by William Gardner to his 1879 patent. Several hundred 2 and 5 barrel guns were manufactured by William Gardner in the United Kingdom from about 1880, and saw service in the Royal Navy, British Army and were sold to Denmark and the Netherlands. The animation shows firstly the 1887 Mk II model with exposed barrels, and then a view of the Mk I on a naval mounting from 1885. The Mk I has enclosed barrels and an external rear sight. These guns, manufactured by Gardner, differ from guns seen in the United States, which are generally based either on Gardner's original patent of 1876, purchased by Pratt & Witney, or on Pratt & Witney's later design, based on the 1880 patents of Edward Parkhurst. Parkhurst patents include a different lock mechanism, water cooled barrels and a double column magazine. In addition, Parkhurst Gardner guns eject spent cartridges through the base, while Gardner's guns eject through the sides. Agrippina Vaganova (1879-1951) - Teaching at the Kirov c1930s
Agrippina Vaganova (1879-1951) was a dancer at the Kirov Theatre, but, with the plethora of talent at the time (Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina and so on) was only designated 'ballerina' in the year before her retirement. But she is by far more famous for her second career as the instigator of the Vaganova Method for training dancers. I found this tiny fragment of film of Viganova teaching in class, she is first seen sitting and correcting students from a chair and then demonstrating some 'porte de bras' and a 'tour'.

Peter Lange-Muller - Symphony No. 1 in D Minor "Autumn" Op. 17 (1879)
Symphony No. 1 by Peter Lange-Muller. Conducted by Douglas Bostock with the Chamber Philharmonic of Bohemia. I. Moderato - 00:00 II. Vivace - Ma Non Troppo Allegro - 14:30 III. Andante - 19:06 IV. Allegro Con Fuoco - 27:07 Peter Erasmus Lange-Müller (1 December 1850 -- 26 February 1926) was a Danish composer and pianist. His compositional style was influenced by Danish folk music and by the work of Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and of fellow Danish countrymen, including JPE Hartmann. Lange-Müller was born in Fredericksberg, Denmark to an affluent family with a background in politics. He spent his childhood painting, reading poetry, and studying music with prominent teachers, including G. Matthison-Hansen. Poor health prevented him from attending school until 1871, when he entered conservatory to study composition. After a year, however, his father decided that he should follow his professional path and enrolled him in Copenhagen University to study political science. He was not suited for a life in politics though, and by 1874 he had become fully immersed in his compositional career. It was at this time that he and several colleagues founded Copenhagen's Concert Society. For the next quarter of a century, Lange-Müller produced a huge quantity of music, comprising some seventy-seven opus numbers. And, for several years, he conducted the Concert Society he helped to establish. However, he suffered from severe migraines (later linked to chronic eye disease, which made ...

Victor Vasarely - Vega - Boo 1879
Victor Vasarely - Vega - Boo 1879
VICTOR VASARELY The Inventor of Op-Art (optical-art) French painter of Hungarian descent (1906 - 1997). Victor Vasarely defined one of the most remarkable moments in the history of 20th century art. Vasarely was born in Pécs, Hungary, in 1906. He left Hungary and settled in Paris in 1930. In 1965, he participated in the "Responsive Eye" exhibit at the New York Museum of Modern Art, dedicated exclusively to "Optical Art". This pictorial movement attached itself to the concept of suggesting motion without ever actually performing it. It instituted a new relationship between artist and spectator, where the observer cannot remain passive, he is free to interpret the image in as many visual scenarios ha can conceive. Received with great acclaim, the press and the public hailed Vasarely as the inventor and creator of "Op-Art". From 1968 on, playing with the deformation of the line, Vasarely defined his "universal structures", and dove into the immensely popular and widely known "VEGA" period (1968-1984) In March 15, 1997, he died at the age of 91, leaving behind a plastic legacy unrivaled within the domain of abstract geometrical kinetic art. The painting I'm doing, originally it's called boo of year 1879, relates to vasarely's Vega phase. Acrylic on paper 50x50 hope you like it... music: Gotan Project - Last tango in Paris

Mark Hambourg (1879-1960): Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody no.14
Mark Hambourg (1879-1960): Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody no.14
Mark Hambourg was born in Russia, was taught by his father, studied in Vienna under Leschetizky and made most of his career in England. In the first couple of decades of the 20th century he was very highly regarded worldwide and concerted extensively. His playing shows a moving away from the older generation of 19th century pianists: in this way he shares some characteristics with fellow Leschetizky-pupils such as Schnabel and Friedmann. The Hungarian Rhapsodies by Hambourg are the first complete survey committed to a recording. In them he displays a very free approach, where accuracy is very much not the main consideration. They are vivid and, I suppose, exciting. Definitely distinctive. I personally generally hate them all! Hambourg seems set on an all-out smash-and-grab approach to the music, with any kind of beauty, subtlety or refinement completly ignored. In particular I find his tone quality in many passages unbearably "bangy", and his attitude towards phrase-endings, rests, musical breathing and shape exasperatingly perverse. Well, I don't want to prejudice you to these recordings further... perhaps just in these examples I fail to sympathise with the performance practice which was clearly valued in the early 20th century, by pianists who studied under the 19th century greats. This recording of the fourteenth Rhapsody was made in 1929 (for reference, this is not the fourteenth Rhapsody finally included the "complete set" from 1933, but was an earlier recording by ...
