The Travel Channel is a satellite and cable television channel that is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, US. It features documentaries and how-to shows related to travel and leisure around the United States and throughout the world. Programming has included shows in African animal safaris, tours of grand hotels, and visits to significant cities and towns. However, recent programming is almost entirely focused on food, while other limited programming, such as ''Ghost Adventures,'' puts an emphasis on allegedly haunted locations. A new program titled "Deathwish Movers" follows the work of a moving crew as they attempt to place furniture in the upper floors of tall buildings. The network is available in 95 million homes in the United States.

History

The Travel Channel was launched by Trans World Airlines on February 1, 1987, presumably to boost airline patronage. The name was derived from travel-related filler programming offered by the Home Theater Network premium cable service. TWA purchased the name rights from Group W Satellite Communications in 1986, and following GWSC's shutdown of HTN in January 1987, took over HTN's transponder spot. The network was later sold to Landmark Communications, then owner of The Weather Channel, and later Paxson Communications. Discovery bought 70% of the channel in 1997, acquiring the rest in 1999. In May 2007, Discovery sold Travel Channel to Cox Enterprises subsidiary Cox Communications as part of a larger multi-billion dollar transaction. However, Discovery Communications still distributed the channel under Discovery Networks.

On November 5, 2009, it was announced that Scripps Networks Interactive had paid $1.1 billion for a 65% interest in the network. The deal closed in January 2010. Scripps currently distributes Travel Channel and rebroadcasts some programming on it from Food Network.

Confusingly, the television listings website LocateTV, which currently provides TV listings for the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, displays the logo of an unrelated cable channel, also called the Travel Channel, as that of the American channel as well.

Travel Channel HD

Travel Channel HD is a 1080i high definition simulcast of Travel Channel that launched on January 14, 2008. It is available nationwide on Dish Network and DirecTV, and regionally on Verizon FiOS, AT&T; U-Verse, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Cable, Charter, Cablevision, Bright House Networks, Buckeye CableSystem, Mediacom, Suddenlink, and Insight. When the network's operations were taken over by Scripps Networks, the network's presentation of series filmed in standard definition changed from a 14:9 pillarboxed presentation as had been done when owned by Discovery to Scripps's default HD format of video stretched across the screen.

Programming

The Travel Channel is launching a new series in September 2011 called "Dead Files." The series investigates haunted houses and locations throughout the country. One of the most haunted mansions in Great Falls, Montana, The Gibson House, will be featured in Episode Seven.

Phyo uses seasonal, local, organic, fresh produce coupled with nuts and seeds to create raw food recipes. Phyo is the author of three cookbooks: “Ani's Raw Food Essentials”, “Ani's Raw Food Desserts”, and “Ani's Raw Food Kitchen” (awarded “Best Vegetarian Cookbook USA 2007”). Phyo hosts “Ani's Raw Food Kitchen Show”, on YouTube.

In August 2010, Phyo was named one of 12 “warriors” in Sambazon Acai’s “Warrior Up” advertising campaign celebrating the work of leading social and environmental activists. In honor of her work with the Pedal Patch Community, a Los Angeles based community organization, where she teaches at-risk youth how to garden and make food in urban areas; images of Ani wearing a warrior headdress are being featured on billboards and bus stops around southern California.

Phyo lives in Los Angeles and is currently working on her next book along with planning projects for TV, DVD, and the web.

Ani Phyo was been chosen by Vitamix to launch their newest blender, the TurboBlend Variable Speed. A 60-minute instructional DVD of Phyo will be included with the blender.

Ani Phyo is of Korean descent. She was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, and raised primarily in upstate New York, outside Buffalo. Her father raised her on mostly vegan fresh whole and raw foods. They had their own organic farm growing up, and grew their own produce for food and juicing.

Her first job after college was working retail management at Macy’s in Herald Square in New York City. Soon afterwards, she moved to London, England for a year and a half, then to Sydney, Australia for 7 months. Upon her return to upstate New York, she studied post-graduate social psychology, computer art, and fine art, which launched her career in multimedia. She produced live multimedia events and convergence TV and internet experiences through the 1990s. During this time, she discovered that eating raw foods fueled her mental clarity and focus, and kept her healthy. This was the early beginning of her raw food career.

Today, Phyo lives in Los Angeles, California with her Rhodesian Ridgeback, Kanga.

Education

Phyo attended Ewha and Yonsei Universities and studied international business, graduating in 1987 and 1989, respectively. She then graduated from Cornell University with a dual bachelor's in human ecology design and business management in 1990. She then did some post-graduate work in social psychology, 3-D modeling and simulation, computer art, fine art and sculpting at SUNY Buffalo, finishing in 1994.

Food

Phyo has always loved to make food of all sorts. From an early age, she worked with catering companies to refine her culinary skills. Though her background is in high end gourmet complex recipes, today, her she teaches simple, fast, easy to make recipes using common ingredients.

SmartMonkey Foods was co-founded by Ani Phyo in 1999 in Los Angeles, CA. SMF started as a catering and events company, hosting gourmet raw food dinners in Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Pasadena, CA. As customer requests increased for packed and prepared foods, the SmartMonkey Foods line of packed dressings, sauces, cheeses, pizza crust, desserts was launched.

The company moved to Portland, OR for 4 years 2003-2006, where SmartMonkey Foods provided catering, packaged prepared foods, classes, retreats, weekly cafes, monthly special events, and their fruit and nut bars called SmartMonkey Bars. Clients included Nike, Adidas, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, and Carnival Cruise Lines, to name a few.

SmartMonkey Foods ceased operations in 2009.

The Web and multimedia

Ani Phyo moved to San Francisco and founded a multimedia company called SmartMonkey Media, which produced live multimedia events, including the world’s first online fashion show, "Fiber," in 1994. Netcast over copper lines before ISDN or T1 lines were available to the U.C. Berkeley multicast backbone (known as MBone), this show was attended by a global audience via the internet, and has changed our marketing landscape.

As an early pioneer of the web, Phyo was a part of San Francisco digital lab, Cyberlab 7, and founder of Dimension 7, where she handled CG work on ''Virtuosity'', the early cyber film starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe and produced by Paramount Pictures. A partial client list includes Warner Bros. (Porno For Pyros tour, Perry Farrell), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Microsoft, Pacific Bell, and Ninja Tunes UK.

Phyo’s produced numerous websites, including a 14,000 page rich-media educational site for Simon and Schuster in 1996. One ground breaking project sent video jockeys across the Mediterranean on bicycles with laptops and video cameras. The VJs would post their journals online, shoot video and overnight it to Ani, who would edit them and put them onto the website. The VJs would chat online from a different classroom weekly during their journey, and this occurred more than 10 years prior to YouTube and Facebook.

Her book ''Return on Design'' was an early educational book on user-centered interaction design for the Web and wireless technologies which came out of the design and media classes she taught at U.C. Berkeley, San Francisco State University, and San Jose State University.

She has been a consultant for the Disney Channel (convergence TV and web), ABC Family, Gymboree, Electronic Arts, and Apple Inc., among others.

Television and media

She has appeared on the Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, KGO-TV ABC 7's View From the Bay, WNBC 4 New York's LX New York, XETV CW 6's San Diego Living, and KSWB's FOX 5 San Diego's Morning Show. Phyo is also on various online networks including the VCN, produced by Breakdown Services and the Hollywood Reporter, and on VegNews.com.

Phyo has been featured in numerous publications including Food Network, Food & Wine, Oxygen, VegNews, and Alternative Medicine Magazines.

Product endorsements

She is currently endorsed by many leaders in the natural products movement including Vitamix blenders, Excalibur Dehydrator, and Sambazon Acai. Phyo is also featured as part of the Vitamix Blender’s Star Chef series.

Controversy

Phyo promotes raw food lifestyle but is often criticized by loyal raw foodists for suggesting her food can be paired with cooked foods. She supports vegetarianism, believing this will help with weight loss and also will help cure chronic diseases.

Samantha Elizabeth Brown (born March 31, 1969) is an American television host, notable for her work as the host of several Travel Channel shows including ''Girl Meets Hawaii'', ''Great Vacation Homes'', ''Great Hotels'', ''Passport to Europe'', ''Passport to Latin America'', ''Great Weekends'', ''Passport to China'', and ''Samantha Brown's Asia''. Ms. Brown is known for her perky disposition. She is currently a resident of Brooklyn, New York.

Personal life

Brown was born in Dallas, Texas. Her family soon moved to Derry, New Hampshire, where she grew up and graduated from Pinkerton Academy. She took 12 years of voice lessons, attended Chapman University, and transferred to Syracuse University to study musical theater. As stated in one of her episodes in Passport to Europe, she is of Scottish and German descent.

Professional work

Brown's early career included working in commercials, including playing the spokesperson "Wendy Wire" for a company called Century Cable. She is involved in the comedy sketch group "Mouth", based in New York, where she has lived for ten years. Brown has appeared in the ''HP Pavilion'' "Computer is Personal Again" commercials. Additionally, she is the spokesperson for ECCO shoes. Brown is also a spokesperson in a 2009 commercial for Cedar Point amusement park.

Travel host

In 1999 and 2000, the Travel Channel was looking for a travel host, and Brown was chosen after a series of auditions. In her role of host, she introduces viewers to vacation destinations and hotels in the United States and around the world, as well as showcasing restaurants and activities at those destinations. As a travel host, Brown travels 230 days out of the year and takes eight days to film an hour-long episode.

Since joining the network, Brown has hosted several series including ''Girl Meets Hawaii'', ''Great Vacation Homes'', ''Great Hotels'', ''Passport to Europe'', ''Passport to Great Weekends'', and ''Passport to Latin America''.

In addition to her regular shows, Brown has hosted several Travel Channel specials, such as the 2006 all-access special ''Great Cruises: Freedom of the Seas with Samantha Brown'' aboard the ''Freedom of the Seas'' cruise ship, the largest passenger ship in the world at the time of its launch. Prior to that, she hosted a 12-night Mediterranean Venice cruise aboard the ''Brilliance of the Seas'' cruise ship. The accompanying show was entitled ''Samantha Brown's First Cruise''. In 2007, she hosted a special entitled ''Passport to Green Getaways'', a travelogue to three eco-friendly destinations in North America.

In 2007, Brown had two shows in production. In April 2007, Discovery Networks announced that she would host a new series titled ''Passport to Great Weekends ... With Samantha Brown'' featuring Brown exploring 48-hour vacation locations in the US and abroad. In September 2007, she was in Beijing, filming ''Passport to China'', which aired in July 2008, just ahead of the Beijing Olympics.

In 2008, Brown debuted ''Passport to Great Weekends'', which showcased her in a more informal light as well as following her on more unique, off-the-beaten-path vacations. Episodes would follow the format of her arrival at a destination on a Friday afternoon and conclude with her leaving on Sunday evening. The second season's title was changed to Samantha Brown's Great Weekends and featured a new introduction, but mostly the same format.

On February 8, 2010, the Travel Channel presented "Samantha Brown's 10th Anniversary Special" to commemorate Brown's ten years as host.

On April 9, 2010, she made a special guest appearance on ''The Price Is Right'' to present a travel-themed showcase.

On July 12, 2010, her new series was released on the Travel Channel, "Samantha Brown's Asia"
